3 out of 5 stars A piece of history.......2006-06-03

Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.

1 out of 5 stars A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19

I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

From the dance floor to the bedroom, the deep-house diva style of the M People delivers sounds that'll make you surrender to the beat. Released as their first major label outing, Elegant Slumming combines lusty syncopations with liquid-techno vibes that ooze over the top. Throughout the mix, disco grooves, funky bass cuts, piano and bass melodies, wah-wah guitar, and sweet soul vocals ride like a convertible in the neon night. The extravagance is appropriate considering that the British trio was shaking the early-'90s foundation years before ubiquitous house releases were duplicating such soulful jams. For a little history lesson, get ready to jive from the waist down. --Lucas Hilbert

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunning stuff.......2001-02-25

M People has always been one of my favourite groups. The songs they have published over the years have been so appropriate to the world we live in, even though many people have not always had the appreciation of being faced with that blatant truth.

Elegant Slumming starts off with One Night In Heaven, a joyful track. Moving on Up is one of those tracks that you play with vindication after a difficult time... the words "I'm movin' on up, you're movin' on out... nothing can stop me" are so true and are so self-medicating :)

Colour My Life is a bit sad. Renaissance is funky, although it is a bit repetitive. Don't Look Any Further is... just great. All in all, there is a track for every mood.

This album is definitely ONE-OF-A-KIND! If you want music and voice to say something to your soul listen to this. I've been hooked on this recording for years now and it's still the BEST! HATS OFF TO THE M-PEOPLE ! for giving me what I want..... ! Thanks !

5 out of 5 stars real disco music of the nineties.......1998-12-15

If you are one of the disco fanatics of the eighties then these music tracks are for you. Definitely the music of the eighties revived with added touch of new age music technology. The beats are felt and the melody danceable. First time listeners would instantly feel the groove! M People would probably mean "Music People" as in real dance music!

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Classics.......1998-07-11

Ever since 1991, when M People hit the music scene with Northern Soul, people for all walks of life have flocked to listen to them. One of the most memborable classic albums by M People is Elegant Slumming. Winning the Mercury Music Prize, by beating off groups like Pulp and Blur, M People have taken the world with storm with Elegant Slumming.END

A friend of mine who has a vast collection of music gave me the CD to check out and I was immediately hooked. On many of the tracks you find that you are tapping or moving some part of your body without even realizing it. Not a wrong move in any song and that's rare indeed. So... not a serious CD but definitely a must when you just want to have something to get your groove on.
