    Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

    Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT RECORDING, BUT THE PRICE..........1999-12-01

    This is 20th century opera at its most vivid. Once considered a failure, Osud was resurrected in an English translation that actually improves upon the original libretto. The music is as vital as anything in Janacek: the piece starts a churning riff strangely reminiscent of Philip Glass; the ending is equally memorable -- startlingly brusque and humorous. Throughout, we get musical drama tied to the quick of spoken language; conversations overlap, or suddenly fall silent. At times the story is ridiculous, but the production rides over any problems. Philip Langridge, as always, is great. My only qualm: this was originally a single disc CD on EMI, for a single disc price. Though the package is nice, the price is steep for some 70:00 odd minutes.

      If you like U2, Eno, Eggstone, the Cardigans, the Wondermints etc...

      The Sight-Seers are back (at last!!!) with a new album. Jeez, I am a huge fan and have been patiently waiting for years as they developed their record label, worked on side projects and produced other people's records. Finally they got back to basics and focused on what I believe to be their forte; making Sight-Seers records!

      For those not familiar with them, I will tip you to the band, as well as demand you buy this record! Now We're In The Sun is a staggering collection of guitar pop sensibility covering the gamut from dark and murky rockers to the most sublime and uplifting melodies this side of the UK. Amorphous guitar textures and an absurdly potent rhythm section weave together to form the bed under which the singer (Zollie Maynard - who is awesome) lays his highly crafted melodies and lyrics. This band has created what few others can, an original collection of music that stuns the competition while delighting the listener, allowing them to freely and easily pass into the realm of the muse. The Sight-Seers have developed in many ways since their last full length album Fun-Seeking with the Sight-Seers (released on Brendan O'Brien's Sony imprint 57 Records/Shotput back in 1996) and their 20 minute masterpiece, 1999's The Airbrush EP. The most obvious area of growth is in the overall musical approach to this new album. Now We're In The Sun is far less sparse than their previous outings, with lots of strings, harpsichord, piano, organ and lush harmonies combining to form a dense cloud of sound which envelops the listener, transporting them to an altogether different place and time.

      So that's my long winded wordsmith of a review! Eat your heart out Rolling Stone. Sorry if it sounded blah blah blah to you. It's just my opinion. Maybe it will help you decide to check this record out. I really do sincerely recommend it to anyone who loves Rock n' Roll. Someday a major label will wake up and scoop these guys away to greatness. These days however, it seems you have to dig for the great stuff! And if The Sight-Seers are reading this..... MAKE MORE RECORDS!
