"Musician's meaningful melodies: smart pop, indeed... Bowers songs bear the hallmark of good writing..."

Album Description
Hot debut album for quickly rising solo-artist Jason Bowers. Limited edition release. Includes hits "Remember," "On the Inside," "Friday," and an awesome cover version of "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" by Paul Simon. Never Grow Old

Never Grow Old, Music, Jason Bowers, Forefronting a truly new movement in the world's music by creating a "new pop:" fusing the influences of the current generation, instead of just re-hashing the same rock or dance.

Argentina-born, California-based Gustavo Santaolalla helped shape the rock en Español movement by producing Mexican bands Molotov and Café Tacuba , and Colombian singer Juanes. In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side.

The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Axe Rufus Wainwright, and it would be 5 stars.......2007-06-13

This album is a mixture of the instrumental theme, which is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and some very solid country songs. I was surprised by how good the other songs were (you still have to like country music, though). There are only two songs that I don't like at all, and those are the two by Rufus Wainwright - one a cover of "King of the Road" (originally by Roger Miller). They are great demonstrations of him at his most nasal and whiny. It sounds like he is a French guy holding his nose and singing too slow. It's too bad, because they are good songs otherwise. I guess if you like him, you're golden; but I can't stand these versions. Fortunately, the rest of the disc is really good.

The product is what I expected. It arrived on time and in the condition advertised.

3 out of 5 stars A matter of taste..........2007-05-08

I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the music in the film, except for in the most intense of scenes. Perhaps this is why I was so, completely, disappointed with this soundtrack. I felt that if it did even half of what the film did for me it would be a worthy buy. My friends, this soundtrack is shat. It's mostly country and folk, which I am plainly not into. If you like these things then check this out - if not, turn away.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect, just like the movie..........2007-04-21

It is so wonderful, relaxing..if you`re thinking in buying...Just do it!

Album Description

With the assistance of a crack band of Boston rockers and some very special guests, celebrated baseball commentator and columnist Peter Gammons (ESPN, The Boston Globe, Sports Illustrated) trades in his typewriter for a Stratocaster and delivers a rousing set of vintage classics, originals, and rock obscurities - all to benefit Theo and Paul Epstein's Foundation to be Named Later, a charity which raises funds and awareness for non-profit agencies serving disadvantaged youth in the Greater Boston area. Gammons's ruggedly soulful vocals and guitar are featured alongside cameos from Red Sox G.M. Theo Epstein, Juliana Hatfield, George Thorogood, Little Feat's Paul Barrere, Kay Hanley, and an all-star chorus consisting of Red Sox players Jonathan Papelbon, Kevin Youkilis, Trot Nixon, Lenny DiNardo and Tim Wakefield, former Red Sox pitcher Bronson Arroyo, and NESN broadcaster Don Orsillo

4 out of 5 stars Multi-Talent At Work!.......2007-05-16

When I saw that my favorite (baseball) sportwriter/commentator/historian/etc. had released an album, I had mixed feelings about getting it: after all, excelling in one field doesn't guarantee excelling, or even measuring up to mediocre, in another. However, I got the CD and liked it very much. Gammons and his crew of baseball personalities, along with some serious musical help (i.e., George Thorogood on one track) do a fine job in their covers of a wide range of songs, from Warren Zevon's "Model Citizen" to a few Chuck Berry classics, and include an original composition by Gammons. Peter's singing voice has a strong hint of Randy Newman in several of the songs, interestingly enough. No less interesting is the liner notes, which give us some insight as to why these songs were chosen - I like to think that a good, serious musician chooses the songs that they put on their $15 CD rather carefully for us consumers, rather than picking 12 or 17 songs at random and singing them as if they were coming off the assembly line. Needless to say, we are able to share Gammons' thoughts on each of the songs, special to him, and a treat in a CD for us.

3 out of 5 stars Who knew?.......2006-08-03

I bought this out of simple curiosity, as i have been a long time fan of Gammons since I was a kid going back to his days at Sports Illustrated in the 80's. I am shocked - Shocked! - at home good this disc is. "Cinderella Superstar" with Juliana Hatfield is great and the Zevon cover to kick off the record was a fine choice. I was dissapointed he fudged the lyrics on "Death Or Glory", as "He who sings punk later goes to church" doesn't quite capture the moment quite like the Strummer original. Anyhow, here's hoping Gammons' recovery goes well so he can belt these out live.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise from a talented sportswriter..........2006-07-15

I ordered this because I'm a huge fan of Peter Gammons, the sportswriter. Now, I am a fan of Peter Gammons, aging rocker.

I started listening to the disc with pretty low expectations, and when I say "pretty low," I mean "William Shatner-type bad." However, it only took a few bars of the first track for my expectations to be blown out of the water, and two songs for me to be hooked on the album.

I can't say that Gammons has a classically good voice, but he can carry a tune with a vocal style that's reminiscent of Randy Newman. His guitar playing, while not setting the world on fire, is certainly above average. His song choices are both eclectic and surprising, proving that he knows almost as much about old-school rock and roll as he does about baseball, which is a frightening amount.

I would generally give the album 3 stars because as a general rock and roll/blues album, it's straight-forward with solid, competent performances. However, the fact that it's Peter Gammons behind the mic and with a guitar in his hand is enough for me to give the album a bonus fourth star, for blowing my expectations out of the water.

I recommend it highly, not just for fans of Gammons' writing, but for fans of solid, good-time rock and roll everywhere. Here's hoping that it's not the last time we hear Peter put down the pencil and pick up the guitar...

5 out of 5 stars Gammons Rocks.......2006-07-14

Peter hits a home run with his CD. My favorite song is the one he wrote, "She Fell From Heaven".

My kids like "Bad Teeth" and "Wake Me, Shake Me".

It's a CD you'll listen to over and and over again.

"The Commissioner" not only knows baseball, but music as well.

5 out of 5 stars Rock on, Peter!.......2006-07-08

Who knew? Our favorite baseball analyst rocks! We really liked the bluesy "Tanqueray."

Get well soon! Your colleagues miss you.

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet—79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-04-22

I must confess I am unfamiliar with Copland's "The Tender Land" except for this reissue, which I find to be absolutely magnificent. I realize this is a truncated performance, eliminating what I assume to be a fair amount of spoken dialogue. But I don't care. What is presented here is simply one of the finest American compositions - forget American - one of the finest compositions of the 20th century. Period.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure joy.......2005-07-29

The recording of Copland's The Tender Land is alone worth getting this disc. The rest of the vocal works are just a bonus, a very good bonus! Copland directs a definitive account of his opera, and in this compressed version leaves out all the spoken parts of the full length opera, no doubt depriving us of a lot of good music but on the other hand giving listeners a very concise version that is even stronger musically (although dramatically a little lacking in logic because of the missing parts - for example without knowing of the confrontation during the party scene you would find the boys' departure the next morning puzzling, and the CD notes does not elaborate on the plot, which is about the only negative thing you can say about this set). Listening to the opera in this abridged version gives you the feeling of one hit after another, there is not a single weak point in the score and Copland has a gift for word-setting that can turn clumsy texts such as "girls come and go, some are good, some are not so good" into goosebumps stuff (a lovely dedication to Laurie sung by Grandpa). Other high points include the stunning transformation of the traditional Walls of Zion into the quartet piece The Promise Of Living and a rollicking Party Scene, which contains the best in Copland's clever orchestration and rythmic vitality - it seems all of the composers best traits have all come together in this work. Martin's Act 2 Song 'Laurie...You Know, Laurie' is a rare gem or an aria and beautifully sung. Other hidden gems include the comical 'We've Been North'. The cast is impeccable and the entire performance is flawless. Add to that one of those scores that simply win you over from start to finish, and you can't but fall in love with this music. I once thought that nothing could better Appalachian Spring but that was before I discovered this neglected work.

    5 out of 5 stars Copland's vocal work.......2002-08-08

And so on this third set of the celebration of Aaron Copland's music, all attention is on his vocal work including the opera, "The Tender Land".

I can't completely explain why I give this five stars after giving the first two sets four stars each. This is just the way the opera, in particular, strikes me. I'm no great opera fan, and to my knowledge, America just has not yet proved itself in the operatic field although it's tried. It will take time, but I do see Copland's work as someday being considered the best example of American opera. This is all subjective opinion, obviously, and I'm sure there are those more knowledgeable who will disagree. So be it.

All in all, these three sets will give you a complete overview of one of America's most important composers.

Toots and the Maytals are well-known as a defining reggae group, but their roots are back in the glory days of ska. In 1962-63, when these cuts were recorded, Toots was still in his teens and Bob Marley had yet to enter a studio. The harmonies have traces of American gospel and R&B, but are already breaking out in the distinctively Jamaican rhythms that would evolve throughout the 1960s. The Skatalites provide typically pumped-up brass, the Maytals add tight harmonies, and Toots soars over it all. "Are You Mine" is pure doo-wop, and "War No More" is a skatified "Down by the Riverside." The gems, though, are "Six and Seven Books of Moses," a romping Jamaican gospel, and the title track, which mixes it all together in an exuberant celebration of wailing voices and honking saxophone. --Elijah Wald

5 out of 5 stars Only reviewed once huh?.......2005-08-12

After some 20 years of listening to, and collecting, SKA, Rocksteady, Skinhead Reggae and Reggae, this album continues to be among the best I own. I have everything Toots has ever done, and seen him several times, but these songs from the beginning are, in my humble opinion, the best he has ever done. Never Grow Old and Hallelujah alone are worth the price of this CD, but all the others are great as well. If you like old Reggae at all, do yourself a favor and add this to your collection imediately. As the other reviewer stated, it will change your life

5 out of 5 stars Jumping music to lift the soul.......2001-06-22

If you get the opportunity this album will change your life. Big Words? Try it then call me a liar. Early Toots records started with a bang and got fiercer as the song developed. Want to learn the first chapters of the Bible, try the Book of Moses. Just try it and see. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars AN ESSENTIAL FOR ANY FOLK MUSIC FAN.......2001-06-30

Two of contemporary folk music's leading ladies -- Anne Hills and Cindy Mangsen -- are joined here by an incredible supporting cast to deliver one of the most enjoyable albums of the last 30 years. Drawing mostly on traditional ballads, with a few actualy credited to individual authors, this collection runs the gamut -- everything from reflective ballads to gospel to bluegrass to English music hall to string band tunes. You get the idea.

These are songs that these two women have 'grown up' with and loved over the space of their well-respected careers -- and with the help of such stellar friends as (the sadly late) John Hartford, Gordon Bok, Laurie Lewis, Priscilla Herdman, Jan Burda, Tom Paxton, Carla Sciaky, Steve Gillette, John Roberts and Tony Barrand, and the incredibly fun Volo Bogtrotters (just try to listen to 'Bill Morgan and his gal' only once!), this recording can't help but shine.

Unlike other recordings featuring a ton of talented guests, the contributions these folks offer here fit in seamlessly with the talented foundation of the voices of Anne and Cindy. There aren't a lot of people playing on any one cut, so no toes are stepped on -- no one gets in the way musically. From the sound of the album, egos were wisely left at the door to the studio, allowing the joy exuded by the performers in bringing these songs to life to infect us all. I must also add that the beautiful production work of Scott Petito adds a lot to the quality of the project -- his name on a recording is always an indication of fine sound engineering.

I could go down the track listing and rave about each of the 17 tracks -- but I think that would be a bit long. The standouts are many, and they could change with each listening of this wonderful disc. I've been enjoying it for over 6 years and it still sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it. Anne Hills and Cindy Mangsen have incredibly beautiful, expressive voices -- and they were born to sing together. They've been doing so for over 20 years on and off -- their harmonies are exquisite, but never overbearing. Coupled with the (mostly) simple, tasteful arrangements here, this cd is 50 minutes well-spent, over and over again.

Other avenues to explore: Anne Hills and Cindy Mangsen have several fine solo recordings available. Anne and Cindy also work with Priscilla Herdman as the wonderful VOICES trio. Cindy Mangsen and hubby Steve Gillette are also a respected, established duo. And those are just the principals of this amazing project...! They all tour extensively and often -- see them in any combination wherever and whenever you can. The music is always of the highest quality -- and fun!

    5 out of 5 stars Faithful performance.......2000-11-06

My grandfather, Rev. James C. Moore, wrote the title song of this recording when he returned to his parents' home after an extended time away and first noticed that his parents were getting older. My family and I are very grateful for Anne and Cindy's true performance of his music.

    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Album.......2000-05-14

Anne Hills and Cindy Magsen are a wonderful pair of singers. This album is a collection of folk songs in the true sense of the word: most of the choices are classic ballads and traditional songs...even a shape-note hymn. The close harmonies of Ann and Cindy, and Priscilla Herdman, are intricate and impeccable. Add to that mix some great backup artistry: Laurie Lewis, Pete Sutherland, Steve Rosen, John Hartford..and you have it all! If you like folk music, you should include this album in your collection.

Hot debut album for quickly rising solo-artist Jason Bowers. Limited edition release. Includes hits "Remember," "On the Inside," "Friday," and an awesome cover version of "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" by Paul Simon. Centered around a pop/rock core, influences range from modern rock to dance/r&b/soul but every song is catchy, lasting, real music... period.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome pop/rock and electronica!! Sure he's unsigned????.......2002-07-17

I have had this CD since it came out, sent to me by a friend in Missouri, where Jason is currently based. Wow! is it ever amazing...

"Remember" has the qualities of an instant hit, and has piano/vocals almost like Alicia Keyes or Fiona Apple (If they were boys!)... Overall the album has a pop or electronica sound almost like Moby or the Beatles remixed with modern instruments. The more mellow sounds on "On the Inside" and "Friday" rival more rock oriented heros like Elton John or even Oasis.

Definately buy this album. I reccomend for music lovers of all ages.
