Heavenly Bodies

Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Probably the most successful English alternative band to blend the sensibilities of American pop rock and English Gothic, their music broke through traditional radio barriers. They influenced many of mainstream alternative acts of the late 80's and 90's.

Album Description

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2006-12-09

Hey, I'm actually sixteen i just don't want an account. This album is truly breathtaking. I first heard "The Grace" on Much Music and I couldn't get enough of it. "How Could I Survive" and " Angels and Saints" have to be the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. From the beginning to end it is perfection. The lyrics are inspiring. Neverending White Lights have done an amazing job collaborating many different artists with unique sounds to create sixteen songs that blend into each other so beautifully, it's entrancing.

3 out of 5 stars Meh.......2006-07-27

I don't usually write these things, but I've read some of the comments and I really disagree with those people who've given this album high marks. The guys/gals saying "every track is unique" or some version of that are seriously full of it in my opinion - I've listened to it twice over and I remember only two tracks: #12 (The Grace - really great song and the reason I bought this CD) and #14 (Liar - with the singer from Our Lady Peace). The rest are completely unremarkable. If you're like me and heard "The Grace" and figure that the album'll have some other interesting tracks like it, I think you'll be really disappointed (I'm not, but only because I got it used for $10).

5 out of 5 stars Best Album of 2005.......2006-04-05

This album has sixteen amazing tracks that each stand alone. But in my opinion, the album is an experience and every song flows together beautifully.

From What I Once Was- 9/10- This song has great piano and very good lyrics. Daniel Victor's voice is not the best on this album but he sounds great. A good track to start the album.

Angels & Saints- 8/10- I really like the music in this song, the drums especially. Chris Gadon's voice reminds me of Thom Yorke's (Radiohead), without sounding too much like him.

Age of Consent-10/10- A great cover of a great song. One of the more upbeat songs here, sung by 311's Nick Hexum. Nick's voice is great on this track, and it sounds nothing like 311's music. The perfect song to sing along to while driving with the windows down.

Ending of a Story-10/10- This song is, in one word, epic. Chris Gray has the kind of voice that gives you chills and the music and background vocals accompany him very well. The song features one of my favorite lyrics: 'And in the end, I'll die and you'll descend'

Return Our Lives-9/10- This song sounds a little electronic and the music is a bit repetitive. The chours is also repetitive and the song drags at the end a little too long. If it wasn't for that, the song would get 10 out of 10. But on the other hand, Judah Nagler's voice is refreshingly original and steals the song away from the music. I do love the way the song ends, with just his voice.

I Hope Your Heart Runs Empty-10/10- This is my favorite song on this album. It has some of the best lyrics on here, sung to perfection by Scott Anderson of Finger Eleven. He has a starkness to his voice that is so breathtaking you don't even notice the music behind it.

A Littlepiece- 10/10- My second favorite song. In my opinion, the best lyrics I have ever heard and very good music backing them. Marco Difelice's voice stands out above all the rest on the album and he delivers the song beautifully.

This Longing-10/10- I really love this song, mostly because I can personally relate to the lyrics. This is the type of song that is meant to be heard with headphones on and with your eyes closed. The ending is especially well done, with the background vocals converging seamlessly with Daniel Greaves'. I love the music on this track, it is probably the best on the album.

Of All The Things You've Done Wrong- 10/10- A shorter but brilliant song that makes me want to cry every time I hear it because the lyrics remind me of war. Nathan Larson's voice is incredible and absolutely breathtaking.

Tired Of Saving Souls-9/10- Another 'upbeat' track. This song has a great flow to it, and good music. John Campsey has an impressive vocal range that shines above the rest of the song.

How Could I Survive-9/10- The shortest song on the album. The song has a really great beat and good lyrics. Another good song for driving. Sharky Laguana has a unique voice that makes this song stand out.

The Grace- 10/10- What can I even say about this song? Words really can't convey it, you really just have to hear it. This is the song that introduced me to NWL and for months it was the only song I'd listen to, without giving the others a chance. It is that good. Dallas Green's voice is hands down the best on the album, the lyrics are meaningful and the music is amazing. Just hear it.

First Days of Spring- 10/10- Another epic track, this one featuring Hum's Matt Talbot. The music stands out on this song more than any other track on the album but it doesn't overpower the vocals.

Liar- 10/10- A well written song that I can relate to personally. Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace sings with more passion on this track than anything OLP has ever done. His voice is impressive as always, and he has one of the best vocal ranges I've ever heard.

Life Is A Dead Scene- 10/10- I love the lyrics to this song, and Todd Kerns' voice is stunning. I still get chills every time I hear this song.

Our Final Hymn- 10/10- This song is very good, but I have to admit I was disappointed. Jimmy Gnecco's vocal range is underused on the track, alot more so than it is on Ours' albums. His voice really is amazing but you would never know it from this song. It is still a very good song, though, with good lyrics. The music doesn't really fit the lyrics, though. It get's 10 out of 10 for Jimmy Gnecco alone.

Overall, this album is incredible and I highly, highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates well written music and a wide variety of stunning vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Utterly Ethereal.......2006-03-31

I was first introduced to Neverending White Lights when my favorite radio station (89X in Detroit) started playing "The Grace." Well I absolutely fell in love with that song so I took a chance on the CD which ended up being pretty expensive due to its obscurity. But the cost was COMPLETELY worth it! I just got it yesterday and I've already listened to it at least a dozen times. The music is truly beautiful and each song seems to add a unique yet complimentary hue to the album as a whole. If you love well-written and well-crafted music and enjoy being able to listen to an entire CD without skipping tracks, this is definitely a must have album!

5 out of 5 stars Gene Loves Jezebel rocks!.......2007-05-05

This is a great album! GLJ is in rare gothic, rock, form. Many great songs. Great vocals, lyrics and instrumentations on this album. I have been a fan of GLJ since the eighties. I had the privilidge of seeing them live in a small venue back in the 80's. Immigrant is probably my fave but all albums are great! Think alternative-new wave-goth-rock-and pop. Love love love it! End.

4 out of 5 stars underappreciated band.......2005-10-30

Although I'm an 80's metalhead, I really have an appreciation for this band. They have a sound that's difficult to describe but if you can imagine Bang Tango mixed with 80's alternative type rock(not the annoying REM kind but the Church kind), and add the Cult's "Love" album, you might get Gene Loves Jezebel. Heavy bass and almost sort of dance music added in. Very unique!

4 out of 5 stars Mysterious, Wonderful.......2004-11-30

Everyone knows the $2.99 bucket at a music store. The one featuring a plethora of Billy Squier and generic old school rap and rock artists you would never care to know. Sometimes, it is necessary to plow through the muck...maybe you'll find something special.
Something like "Heavenly Bodies". This is a rare album that genuinely creates a surreal state of mind. It opens with "American Dreamer", a powerhouse that propels you into its moody journey of an enlightened mind.
This is a sadly underrated album. I have a hard time seeing how tracks like "Joshephina", "Sweet Sweet Rain" and its title track went unnoticed. Besides one or two songs of filler and some pretentious lyrics, (what great rock album is without them, though?) "Heavenly Bodies" is a beautiful, catchy album.

Album Description

"Heavenly Bodies" is Marty Winkler's debut album as a solo artist. The CD is an eclectic mix of styles, united by Winkler's supple vocals and inventive lyrics. It ranges from the jazzy stylings of "Are You Sleeping?" to the plaintive folk melody of "I Gotta Stop Breaking My Own Heart" and includes off-beat numbers like the a cappella "The Warrior Song". Winkler's voice is augmented by the back-up harmonies of Kate Bordeaux and is strongly supported by the keyboard playing of Dan Chouinard. Kari Kjome adds percussion on several numbers and Jim Parker adds some beautiful mandolin on both "Heart" and "Religion". Tom Surowicz of The Minneapolis Star Tribune nominated "Are You Sleeping?" for "sexiest song of the year" in his review of the CD and Jonathan Schwartz has lauded "Gotta Stop Breaking My Own Heart" as being "truthful and intelligent". Schwartz, a noted musicologist, has played "Heavenly Bodies" in regular rotation on his show on WNYC and says of Winkler's writing, "What I wish for 2002 is more Marty Winklers".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Overlooked gem.......2006-12-11

This CD is worth owning just for "Are You Sleeping?," a lanquid, sensuous duet featuring just Marty Winkler's vocal and a jazz guitar. But there are gems aplenty on the eclectic, mostly acoustic disc, including the elegant title track and "What Would You Do (If I Said I Want You to Stay)," a ballad full of longing and hope with just a twinge of country accent. Name a female vocalist you love --Bonnie, Joni, Linda, Bette, Norah -- and Winkler will sound right at home in a shuffle with her.

5 out of 5 stars Pure bliss.......2002-09-26

I'm still thanking the friend who gave me a copy of this one. It's sophisticated, soulful, funny and melodic - in short, a real find. A little folky, a little cabaret, but a little more than that, too. My favorites are the first and last cuts, "Another Sunny Day in Minnesota" (you don't have to live in the Midwest to appreciate the sarcasm, but it doesn't hurt) and "You Are My Religion" (not at all what I was expecting, but a great way to end).

5 out of 5 stars Truly unique.......2002-07-14

There's kind of something for everyone on this album.
There's a sweet ballad, (Heart) a jazz tune, (Are You
Sleeping?) a country song, (You Are My Religion)an a
cappella number (Absentee Heart)a sorta samba thing,
(Another Sunny Day) - the range of styles on this CD
is pretty amazing. Winkler has a great voice - some
record company ought to discover this woman! In the
meantime, we'll just have to wait for the next CD to
hear what else she feels like writing!

5 out of 5 stars Just heard her live!.......2002-04-26

Buy this CD Now! She's going to enchant you!

I heard Marty at The Bitter End, Sunday, April 21, 2002.

Backed by only a keyboard who alternated to a piano, she radiated all the content of this music in that intimate space.

Her voice, like a warm glove, enveloped the line and the lyric.
The outcome: Pure vocal elegance! The CDs contents are a joy!

Moving from sexy to clever to wise, she's a complete musical journey on this CD.

Buy this CD!
-Ron Carter

4 out of 5 stars "Heavenly Bodies" is a sweet, lanquid dream.......2002-04-05

Low-key and a little underproduced ("spare," some might say),
Marty Winkler's "Heavenly Bodies" is nonetheless a warm and lovely collection of songs, confessional but not self-indulgent, and often very sexy. Indeed, "Are You Sleeping?," a duet featuring only Winkler's tender vocal and Chris Michek's jazz guitar, is as sensual as a warm bed on a chilly gray morning. There are a couple of other jazz-tinged cuts but Winkler's songs are eclectic, ranging from folk (the mildly sardonic "Another Sunny Day in Minnesota"), rock-pop ("Big Brass Ring") and even an a cappella oddity ("The Warrior Song")that sounds like it could have been written for a Broadway show, an opera or a women's rights rally. But the real measure of the CD is its ballads, particularly "Don't Fall in Love with Me," with its gospel-influenced piano (by Dan Chouinard) and vocal trills; "What Would You Do (If I Said I Want You to Stay)?," a heartbreaker all the more potent because it's so understated, and the achingly melancholy "I've Gotta Stop Breaking My Own Heart." You can imagine Winkler singing Bonnie Raitt's songs or Joni Mitchell's -- maybe even Aretha's or Renee Fleming's, such the range of her big, many-colored soprano -- but she doesn't really sound like anybody except herself.

5 out of 5 stars TOGETHER WITH KISS OF LIFE, MY FAVORITE GLJ RECORD.......2003-06-09

I've been following these guys since the year they released this album (1993). It was very successful at the time; songs like Break The Chain, Josephina or Sweet Sweet Rain were daily played in every radio station or disco. A decade has passed since then but I kept on listening to those songs with the same enthusiasm... and the same applies to the rest of the album; I enjoy all 11 tracks - with highlights on the 10th, "Heavenly Body", one of the favourite songs of my life!

Once enjoying those mentioned songs that came out as singles, it's impossible to resist to American Dreamer, Down and Rosary. Last but not least, 3 lovely and simple songs: Any Anxious Colour, In A Lonely Place or Voice In The Dark.

After this album I started to find out Jay Aston's talent, both as singer and songwriter... but also as an artist that loves to play live - I believe he knows my country deeper than me, as you can confirm by the large amount of live material GLJ have been releasing over the years. Great Band!

3 out of 5 stars A bit too poppy!!.......2001-10-05

This is a Gene Loves Jezebel album the record co. wanted people to buy. It is good, but a bit too poppy, compared to their other albums. The songs still have good guitar riffs and it sounds like GLJ, but not as good or as bizarre. It is a good album for people who want to listen to GLJ for the first time.

A genuinely unique and solid production, containing some fantastically original and groundbreaking songs with a definite heavy world foundation with elements of jazz and new age. One would have thought they would do a follow-up, however it never happened. Caroline Seaman's voice is quite remarkable and beautiful.
