Amazon.com essential recording

The three-volume Good Vibrations series is designed with the hits-hungry fan in mind. Eschewing a strict chronological approach, the best-of sets are arranged according to charting position. Thus the initial collection is laden with the group's trademark tunes, ranging from the California boys' first top 10 charter, 1962's "Surfin' Safari," to their last, 1988's "Kokomo," a stray, post-Brian Wilson success. "Kokomo" is by far the newest selection included here; nothing else dates past 1966's No. 1 smash, "Good Vibrations." With the likes of "Fun, Fun, Fun," "I Get Around," "California Girls," and the incandescent "God Only Knows" rounding out the set, Greatest Hits Volume 1 is the ideal first pick for anyone looking for the Beach Boys at their commercial peak. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Best Beach Boys.......2007-06-04

No need for much analysis here. An excellent Beach Boys compiliation. It's got all of the radio hits, the fun in the summer in the 60s. Maybe that's why "In My Room" and "When I Grow up to Be a Man" aren't here, which is because they're more thoughtful and introspective. Too bad, but what's here is excellent, great ambassador from its era.

5 out of 5 stars Makes You Feel as if You Live by the Ocean.......2007-04-02

This album brings together all the all time favorites from the infamous Beach Boys. The classics like Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, and Good Vibrations are all included in this CD that is guaranteed to get your blood pumping. Its hard to resist getting up and dancing to these wonderful tracks. If you like the Beach boys, you are sure to love this album. Its got all the right tunes and grooves. It makes you feel as if you live right there, ten feet from the beautiful ocean. I highly recommend this album to any person of any age, its safe for kids, another perk of these amazing tracks.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for BB fans!.......2007-03-08

This has all of the good ones, with awesome sound quality.

5 out of 5 stars The California Girl.......2007-02-23

Great songs from the BEST California 60's group ever! As a Californian, I can listen to these songs and see in my mind's eye the locale where the Boys are singing about. I've been to the beaches and jumped in the waves. I am the California Girl they sing about!

5 out of 5 stars It's givin me good vibrations..........2006-12-29

Just load it up into your jukebox or IPod. If you've never been to Cayucos, CA then you're hopelessly guessing at what these guys are talking about.

5 out of 5 stars good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars memories.......2007-02-22

This cd is excellent it has a lot of very good music and true to the original sound, Am getting a lot of enjoyment, highly recomended

5 out of 5 stars TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

3 out of 5 stars TV themes.......2006-07-05

Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.

5 out of 5 stars Deja Vu.......2006-02-17

Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

Only one title on the second volume of the three-volume Good Vibrations best-of series cracked the U.S. top 10, 1964's "When I Grow Up to Be a Man." (Five of the selections here made the U.K. charts--"Do It Again," "I Can Hear Music," "Break Away," "Darlin'," and "Cottonfields.") In contrast to its loaded-with-hits predecessor, Greatest Hits Volume 1: 20 Good Vibrations, Volume 2 serves up songs that stand as second-tier Beach Boys--but only in commercial terms. The likes of "In My Room," "Don't Worry, Baby," "Caroline, No," and "Heroes and Villains" stand well above Volume One's "409," "Little Deuce Coupe," and "Sloop John B" in their contribution to the group's incredible legacy. Those hungry for hits will want to stick with the earlier volume, but burgeoning Beach Boys boosters will find this 20-song set every bit the match--and arguably the subjugator--of its all-hits forerunner. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection...But You Have To Buy The Other 2 Volumes!.......2004-05-19

As the album title indicates, this collection picks up where Volume 1 ends. Although some of the songs barely cracked the Top 40, I feel these songs are just as important and do more than just "supplement" Volume 1. Like Volume 1, these songs are short radio versions.

The liner notes are enjoyable along with the colorful pictures, song credits and chart positions. As stated in my title, you can't just buy this without getting the other two volumes. Plus, this three volume set may save you from buying their more expensive box set which contains over 100 songs. With this three volume, three CD set, you get 60 songs you will want. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...The Rest of the Capitol Hits (and Near Misses).......2004-03-14

In many ways the Beach Boys GREATEST HITS VOL. 2 (along with Vol. 1 and 3) is a better choice than the 2003 single disc SOUNDS OF SUMMER. You not only still get all of their Top 40 singles (which SOUNDS OF SUMMER can't claim), you get some key album tracks and singles that charted outside the Top 40. So Vol. 2 not only gives you the big hits like "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)" (1964, #9) and "Heroes and Villains" (1967, #12), you get Beach Boy favorites like "Wendy" (1964, #44) and "Friends" (1968, #47), along with b-sides like "Please Let Me Wonder" and the U.K.-only single release of "Cottonfields" from 1970--where it was one of their biggest hits at #3!

Even at 20 tracks the album is still a bit skimpy (running time - 51:12), but it helps provide a solid overview of the Beach Boys first decade. Like Vol. 1, the 12-page foldout booklet is awkward, but the essay by Beach Boy author Brad Elliot offers some terrific insight, the photos are wonderful and the track-by-track studio info is informative. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Great Material Unknown To Much Fans.......2004-01-30

Volume 2 in the "Good Vibrations" series tends give a more intriguing look at The Beach Boys. There is little, if any, inklings of the classic surf numbers. This disc seems to focus more on Brian Wilson's studio wizardry and their unique harmonies.

The first 11 tracks are from when the band was still hot and tearing up the charts. Here is where you'll find the eloquent "In My Room", the gloomy but optimistic "The Warmth Of The Sun" (great Brian falsetto on this one), the "faster, faster" vocal riff on "Little Honda", and the heartshattering "Don't Worry Baby", to name a few. Other gems include the one "Pet Sounds" track, "Caroline, No", the heartwrenching "Please Let Me Wonder", and the upbeat grooves on "You're So Good To Me".

The rest of the disc is from when the band started to become passe. Here we get tracks that are relative unknowns, with the exception of the infamous "Heroes And Villains". There's there two top 20 hits from this period, the pretty "Darlin'" and the nostalgic "Do It Again". There's also the sweet "Friends", a rock reworking of the country standard "Bluebirds Over The Mountain", and Carl's heavenly high on "I Can Hear Music". Closing this album is "Breakaway", featuring ebullient harmonies, and another reworked country standard, a marvelous Al Jardine - produced "Cottonfields".

I heavily suggest you purchase this album. It not only is full of great music but exposes the casual listener to a whole new world of Beach Boys music that they never heard before.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, But Greatest Hits Volume One is Better.......2004-01-16

This is a must for the absolute, die-hard Beach Boys fan. However, on the other hand, if you are a more casual Beach Boys fan (nothing wrong with that either), skip this CD and get the Greatest Hits of the Beach Boys, Volume One.

The first greatest hits CD has their BEST songs, their all-time, absolute GREATEST HITS. This CD picks up where volume one leaves off and focuses on their lesser known, and less popular songs.

Some of the selections contained in this CD are "I Can Hear Music," "In My Room," "All Summer Long," and "You're So Good To Me."

These songs are a study of how the Beach Boys' material matured and evolved from car, girl, and surfing songs to more intricate songs. It was at this point in their history that Brian Wilson wanted to progress from their surfing and car material to other types of songs, but the other members of the band still wanted to play surfing and car songs.

This volume is an study in that evolution. It is certainly not a bad CD, but if you prefer the car and surfing material, stick with volume one.

Amazon.com essential recording

From "Surfin'" to "Kokomo," the first four discs of this box chart the Beach Boys' inimitable 30-year course. Here are all the hits and key album tracks, and an assortment of unreleased material that illuminates Brian Wilson and company's immense contribution to the development of pop music. (Especially fascinating are the assembled fragments from Wilson's abandoned 1966 masterwork, Smile.) A fifth disc features demos, radio spots, live tracks, and studio goodies for the hardcore fan. The set confirms Brian's hardworking genius, but also gives each member his due, especially the late Carl Wilson. Rock & roll music grew up with the Beach Boys, and this box is rock's best family album. --Ben Edmonds

3 out of 5 stars 30 yrs of B.B. review.......2007-03-25

First let me say that when they are doing well, I love the Beach Boys. The first time I saw them live was the summer of approx. 2000. I was so totally satisfied and blown away! I heard that they sometimes do sub-par shows but this must have been one of the great ones. Allentown, PA fairgrounds. This set has many good cuts but I must say that in the effort to build a compilation set, they included a bunch of ( to me) space taking junk. If you are into trivia and deep details, you might get into it but if you are into the music, you'll have to pick and choose your way thru the set and maybe burn to CD the ones you really want.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music, Worth Buying For the Smile Material Alone.......2007-03-05

I do agree with some of the criticsm here. There are MANY great songs not on this. "Salt Lake City" for example, or all of the Brian lead ballads on "Today!". And you can get better sound quality and stereo versions of songs like "California Girls" and "Heroes and Villains" on other albums. But because of the inclusion of the Smile work and the bonus disc containing some great material this is worth getting. If I am not mistaken Disc 5 is the only place you can hear "Good Vibrations" in stereo albeit as it is being recorded and mostly instrumental at that phase.

That said I reccomend getting all of their cd's if you really like the Beach Boys because there are TONS of non-hits that are INCREDIBLE!!! Go get "Today!" and listen to the whole album and you will see what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of The Beach Boys. MORE THAN JUST A GREATEST HITS, THIS BOX IS ALSO A BEACH BOYS HISTORY LESSON .......2007-02-16

Most of this box set was recorded in mono due to Brian Wilson being deaf in one ear and of course 1960s ancient recording technology. I beleive Capital did a fine job with the song selection of this Beach Boys box set. If your looking at this box set as a greatest hits collection you're looking in the wrong direction. "Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of The Beach Boys" is a greatest hits collection with a following of The Beach Boys through their illustrius history. The booklet is very informative, the outakes disc 5, is really interesting especially hearing "Good Vibrations" played live before it was even released. On disc 5, "God Only Knows" along with the "Good Vibrations" sessions is an incredible facinating look into the disection of two of the most argueably popular pop songs of all time. I don't look at this box set as a great Beach Boys Box Set, but there is something in it for every Beach Boys fan. Please Realize that The Beatles had Lennon and McCartney and the greatest record producer of all time in Sir George Martin. The Beach Boys had talented musicians, but the majority of Beach Boys output was that of Brian Wilson. Brian Wilson in reality had to go up against The Beatles all by himself.
Brian also produced 10 Beach Boys albums by the tender age of 23. The Beatles had George Martin producing all their Magnum Opuses. The Beatles were great, there is no argument from me there, but by (Pet Sounds) 1966 Sir George Martin and The Beatles soon realized that a man named Brian Wilson was just as talented musically, or far surpassed any of The Beatles in musical talent individually. If the missing songs are bothering you, buy all the "Capital Re-issue Twofers" with there expansive linear notes, extra and alternate tracks. Remember the limited sound quality of "Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of The Beach Boys" is due to Brian Wilson being deaf in one ear, as he could only hear in mono, not in stereo like the average person can. Anything that was recorded in mono and was put in stereo during the 1960s, was called Duo-Phonic, and beleive me as I tell you the original Mono recordings sound vastly superior to any Duo Phonic stereo remastering. Duo Phonic was just fake stereo and did not help the original vastly superior sounding mono recording. "Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of The Beach Boys" may seem overkill for casual Beach Boys fans, but as I listened to each cd from 1-5 the music plays the Beach Boys history right in front of your ears.
Bottom line: "Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of The Beach Boys" is essential to any Beach Boys fan to learn their history and to realize they were more than beach and sun music. Ps. This box set is some really good listening, if you give it a chance..............

5 out of 5 stars Great Complimation.......2007-01-04

This boxed set does not disappoint. It has all the songs you love from back when the beach boys were all the rave. Great set would buy again.

1 out of 5 stars Stereo is not dead.......2006-09-19

I just recently bought this and was very disappointed with the sound quality. Stereo became available in 1958 and was around when the Beach Boys cam out with Little Deuce Coupe. Little Deuce Coupe Album was available in Stereo or Mono. Why would anyone at Capital want to release box set with most of the songs in Mono when they were available in Stereo? Capital needs to fire someone. Now I am stuck with a poor sounding box set. Bad move on Capitals part. :(

Album Description

Want My Mommy (Time for Bed)" is the No.1 song XM Kids national satellite radio! In addition, The Movers' debut disc, "Good Ideas," has been named a 2003 Parents' Choice Recommended CD and was named Best Recording for Younger Children by Children's Music Web. Also, "Toothache," a tune about dental hygiene set to an old-school rap beat, garnered a 2003 Great American Song Honor Award and the Caribbean inspired "The Medicine Song" was recently named a finalist in the USA Songwriting Contest. Imagination Movers combine pop, hip-hop, rock and world music with educational themes for kids and their parents. The Movers sing about healthy eating, separation anxiety, sibling rivalry and other topics that relate to being a little kid, but the group's musical style has a decidedly grownup groove. Think Mr.. Rogers meets the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Regardless of how you describe it, Movers music is catchy stuff that parents and children will want to listen to over and over again!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!.......2007-07-17

I bought my 3 1/2 year old son this CD after I bought the DVD. We listen to the CD every morning when I'm dropping him off to see Grandmom and he will sing the songs all day long. This CD is a must for any music lover. Even the parents will love this CD. The songs are definitely for the kids, but the music and the beats will have the parents dancing.

5 out of 5 stars MOVE Over Wiggles!.......2007-07-17

OMG - what a breath of fresh air after listening nonstop to the Wiggles for what has seemed like an eternity! The Imagination Movers' songs actually display musical talent and target issues that are important to little kids. My daughter (and my husband) loves "Time Out" - it is just a hillarious take on the toddler-set punishment. I recently ordered the DVD too in the hopes that my daughter (who is 3 1/2) will really bond to them after seeing them and will forget the Wiggles altogether! They are AWESOME! I can play this music in my car and no one who hears it will even be aware that it is children's music. It is thoroughly enjoyable. I can not wait for the Imagination Movers children's show to come out on Disney next year!

5 out of 5 stars We love it!.......2007-02-19

We love the Imagination Movers! After seeing them on the disney channel, we decided to purchase the cd for our car rides. We all love them, even my husband and I sing the songs! My personal favorite is the song about going to bed.
Great Music!

5 out of 5 stars Great children's music.......2007-01-18

If you are only going to buy one children's music CD, buy this one. My three year old listens to it all the time. It is fun for adults and children alike. It still sounds good even after the 1000th time of hearing it (and you will hear it a 1000 times). The music is very hip, but the lyrics are written from a toddlers point of view. I especially like "The wah wah song", "one more book" and "Shakeable Fruit". Its obviously written by guys with a sense of humor and young children. Pity I can't give it more than five stars - highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-01-10

Imagination Movers are great performers and singers. My kids, 2 1/2 and 20 mos, just love their music. Highly recommend it.

Best known for their alumni (Rod Stewart, the Stones' Ron Wood, the Who's Kenny Jones), the Faces' brief early '70s run was as musically rewarding as it was boozy and sideshow spectacular. A revamped, bluesier edition of '60s English pop notables the Small Faces, the Faces established a rollicking musical identity that threatened to overshadow the Stones at their own game. Though the group dissolved under the pressures of Stewart's burgeoning solo career and Wood's recruitment into comfortable career Stonedom, the Faces were about much more than just individual talents. The folksy vulnerability of the late bassist, songwriter, and vocalist Ronnie Lane (well-represented here by "Debris" and "Ooh La La") kept the lads close to roots both geographical and class, while keyboardist Ian McLagen alternated between barrelhouse-boogie and Hammond B-3 soulfulness and Jones loosely locked into irresistible grooves. They could pillage Motown ("Three Button Hand Me Down") and Chuck Berry ("Cindy Incidentally") for riffs, and turn from countrified blues ("Sweet Lady Mary") to the breakneck boogie of "Too Bad" in a heartbeat. They may have been cheated of hits, but the Faces' music remains warm, heartfelt, and enthusiastic--a legacy that's aged much better than the cheap hootch they once drowned themselves in. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Wow... what a piece.......2007-07-02

I can't even begin to say how bad this compilation is. Just another piece of evidence against any rock and roll post 1971 or 2. If this is what gave Rod Steward "credibility" then he can go to hell. That's my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview.......2007-03-30

This compilation of the Faces gathers all their great hits and is the best single-disc compilation of theirs that you will find. I think they are a very underrated band, they were very good, they deserved more recognition. Being that I'm a Rod Stewart fan, I think this is just great, even on the songs where he doesn't sing lead. They're a little like the Rolling Stones, but harder-rocking, in my opinion. They were just a good, hard-rock band and definately all about fun. I definately recommend this to anyone who likes Rod Stewart, as well as those that like early hard rock.

4 out of 5 stars Faces featuring Rod Stewart.......2007-03-27

The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is because I share the same feelings that the band had toward Rod. At this same time he had awesome SOLO albums coming out. Can you imagine the Faces with Rods full creative attention? Oh well, whatever, its still great stuff lots of fun and I can still remember the concerts. Faces were the ultimate live band that would party along with you. Those of you that were fortunate enough to see them live will really appreciate this.

3 out of 5 stars Not enough for the real fans.......2007-03-24

Before you take exception with the three stars I gave this one, please realize that I'm rating the single-disc compilation and not the music. In terms of the songs presented here, we're talking an easy five stars (even the sloppy tracks...that's what made this band great, a mixture of virtuosity and "How can they still be standing when they're that drunk?"). In terms of satisfying anyone other than the most casual or cash-strapped Faces fan, three stars is overly generous. The four-disc "Five Guys Walk Into A Bar..." box set is the way to go, not to mention owning each of the 4 Faces CDs and the Wood-era Stewart solo discs. Forget the "Great American Songbook" Rod Stewart you see in 2007. In the 70s, these guys were serious challengers to the throne occupied by the Rolling Stones in terms of songwriting and rocking attitude. That said, "Good Boys" DOES include one of the single greatest songs produced by the band, the late great Ronnie Lane's "Debris" (with powerful backing vocals from Stewart and some of Wood's most poignant playing). The hits are here ("Miss Judy's Farm," "Stay With Me") as well as key album tracks like "Borstal Boys" (their last great, crunchy, stomping Chuck Berry-derived rocker) and the transcendent "Ooh La La." It's just not enough...period. A good intro? Yeah, of course, like "The Beatles Ones" is a good intro to The Beatles. Listen to the BBC live tracks on "Five guys..." and you'll see what you're missing.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE FACES AT THEIR ABSOLUTE BEST........2007-03-07

I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "THE BEST OF FACES, GOOD BOYS...WHEN THEY'RE ASLEEP..." by one of Rock's greatest legendary bands. I give you one of England's pride and joy's, T-H-E F-A-C-E-S. This legendary compilation album was originally released in 1999 on Compact Disc on the Rhino Records label in association with Warner Brothers Records Inc. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

The band THE FACES are true legends. THE FACES will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for having great band mates that would move on to a either a great solo career or to two of the greatest legendary bands of all time. When lead singer and legendary frontman Rod Stewart met up and joined forces with lead and rhythm guitarist Ronnie Wood, drummer Kenney Jones, keyboard and piano player Ian "mac" Mclagan, the late great bassist Ronnie Lane and his replacement bassist Tetsu Yamauchi, Rock n' Roll was in for a big surprise and treat. THE FACES would entertain audiences and release some great albums and hit songs from the 1970 to 1975 period. This compilation album highlights all of the hit songs from that period. In my opinion, "THE BEST OF THE FACES" is a true testament of the greatness and genius of a very extremely talented band and a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was indeed, far ahead of its time.

Now it is time to let the music speak for itself and do all of the talking. This legendary album begins with the slow smooth Rocker "Flying," the bass screaming acoustic Rocker "Three Button Hand Me Down," the merciless guitar screaming Rocker "Wicked Messenger," the slow beautiful electric acoustic Rocker "Sweet Lady Mary," the FACES trademark Rocker "Bad 'N' Ruin," the soulful Rocker "Had Me A Real Good Time," the slow beautiful Bob Dylan influenced southern Rocker "Debris," the breathtaking screaming Rocker "Miss Judy's Farm," the incredible sounding Rocker "You're So Rude," the fast paced action packed Rocker "Too Bad," the beautiful slow soothing Rocker "Love Lives Here," the forever FACES trademark blistering Rocker "Stay With Me," the groundbreaking Rocker "Cindy Incidentally," the slow beautiful acoustic "Glad And Sorry," the legendary fast paced Rocker "Borstal Boys," the acoustic and mandolin filled slow mellow "Ooh La La," the guitar screechin' and screamin' Rocker "Pool Hall Richard," the soulful and heartful blazing Rocker "You Can Make Me Dance, Sing Or Anything" and the slow beautiful smooth soothing mellow Rocker "Open To Ideas." May I also add that Ronnie Wood played some mean blistering guitar licks and riffs that would forever revolutionize the sound of the guitar and add more to the legend and legacy of THE FACES. Rod Stewart sang the songs with such ease and breathtaking skills that he sounds the way a true Rock n' Roll frontman is supposed to sound like. Kenney Jones plays drums with such a devastating fury that he joins the legendary power drumming ranks of legendary drummers such as Ginger Baker, the late great Keith Moon and the late great John Bonham.

Overall, this is one hell of a compilation album worth seeking out and checking further into especially if you are a newcomer and a curious beginner to the sound and music of THE FACES.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. THE FACES is one collection that a devout music collector would not want to be without.

In closing, after THE FACES disbanded, their legend and legacy was far from ending and being over. Rod Stewart would move on to a very successful solo career which has lasted to this very day. Guitarist Ronnie Wood on the other hand would move on and join THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD, THE ROLLING STONES. Drummer Kenney Jones would also strike gold and move on to replace the late great Keith Moon in the legendary band THE WHO. In 1982, it became public knowledge that Ronnie Lane had developed a probably fatal case of Multiple Sclerosis. At the end of 1983, Eric Clapton and Ronnie Wood organised an all-star British Rock revue, Call To A.R.M.S. (Action for Research into Multiple Sclerosis), that toured England and the States to raise money for Lane's treatment and research into the disease itself. Besides Clapton, Pete Townshend joined aboard along with Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and a host of many others. On a sad note, Rock n' Roll would lose FACES legendary bassist Ronnie Lane to Multiple Sclerosis in June 1997. THE FACES have forever left their mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you Rod, Ronnie, Kenney, the late great Ronnie L., Ian and Tetsu. Thanks for the memories. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE FACES FOREVER. R.I.P. RONNIE LANE. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars with a song in my heart/pal joey sound tracks.......2007-03-31

I actually was so pleased to see a CD available because I have been longing for the movie "with a song in my heart" to become available on VHS and then on DVD, and it never has, so now at least I can enjoy the songs from the movie. The cast track from Pal Joey was just an added bonus.

5 out of 5 stars With A Song In My Heart CD.......2007-03-19

I saw the film, "With A Song In My Heart" when I was twelve or thirteen years old and have wanted the sound track for many years. As an impressionable teenager in the 1950s, I have collected over time many of the films from that time on VHS or DVD, to satisfy my memories of the period. I regret that this particular film is not available on VHS or DVD, but, this CD is the next best choice. It is really enjoyable to hear the richness and depth of the voice of Jane Froman, who was one of the best singers of the time. I can still recall many scenes from the film and this CD revives the memories so well.

4 out of 5 stars A Jane Froman double feature........2006-09-16

This DRG CD pairs two recordings starring Jane Froman.

WITH A SONG IN MY HEART

Susan Hayward played Jane Froman in the film but Froman herself dubbed the vocals. This album of songs was originally issued as a 10" Lp. None of the tracks are taken from the film: They are all studio re-recordings. Later, Capitol re-released it as a 12" LP with two extra songs added. It is that expanded [program included here. Froman is in great voice, though the orchestrations are overly lush and string heavy. Still, the songs include such standards as "It's a Good Day", "Get Happy", and "Embraceable You" making for an enjoyable mini-concert.

PAL JOEY

Capitol's cast album of the 1952 revival has long been a collector's item. The original Lp was deleted in 1960 and did not resurface until Broadway Angel released it on CD (briefly) in 1993. As the stars of the revival Harold Lang and Vivienne Segal had already made a studio cast album for Columbia - an album that helped inspire the revival - they were unable to re-record their songs for Capitol, and the label turned to Jane Froman and Dick beavers to fill in. The revised orchestrations sound dated now, but here is a chance to hear Elaine Stritch singing "Zip" and to enjoy the lusty voice of Helen Gallagher early in her career.

In the end it's the WITH A SONG IN MY HEART selections (making their debut on CD here) that make this CD worthwhile. For PAL JOEY the studio recording (available from SONY) is preferable, however if one is so inclined you can assemble your own cast album of the '52 revival by combining tracks from both releases.

4 out of 5 stars "Pal Joey's" Pal.......2006-07-30

While the legubrious and over-orchestrated songs from the film "With a Song in My Heart" are typical of their era (and Jane Froman's stilted renditions are what once stood for emoting) the "Pal Joey" cast recording is an absolute delight. The orchestrations are bouncy and jazzy in a way that has long been forgotten, and the performances (except for the aforementioned Ms. Froman, whose Vulgnarian renditions are at times quite disconcerting, and who hits the sonic notes like lazer beems but misses the emotional ones by a country mile) are exceptional. Helen Gallagher deserved her Tony from the evidence of this recording, with Elaine Stritch not far behind her. But the overall impact surpasses any recording of "Joey" including the historic one that lead to this revival. There's energy, intensity and a whole lot of fantastic song writing (leave it to to Rogers and Hart) to satisfy any musical theater fan. A must have for anyone who loves "Old Broadway."

4 out of 5 stars another great twofer from DRG.......2004-01-21

Jane Froman was one of the top vocalists of her era. Froman's greatness is celebrated in this new 2-on-1 album, which comprises the film soundtrack of WITH A SONG IN MY HEART as well as the 1952 Broadway revival cast album of PAL JOEY.

WITH A SONG IN MY HEART was the life story of Jane Froman, with the lovely Susan Hayward in the lead role. Froman herself supplied the singing for the film. Numbers include "It's a Good Day", the bittersweet and humorous "They're Either Too Young or Too Old", "Blue Moon", "Get Happy", "Tea for Two" and "I'm Thru with Love".

The 1952 Broadway revival of PAL JOEY was the result of the huge success of a studio album released by Columbia the year before (which featured Vivienne Segal reprising her original role of Vera and Harold Lang as Joey). Segal and Lang headlined the new revival with Helen Gallagher (SWEET CHARITY, HAZEL FLAGG) as Gladys Bumps and Elaine Stritch (ON YOUR TOES, GOLDILOCKS) as reporter Melba Snyder.

Having already recorded their roles for the Columbia album, Segal and Lang saw little need in re-recording them for the revival album on the Capitol label. Instead, the roles of Vera and Joey were covered by Jane Froman and Dick Beavers.

The cast album suffers on many levels. First, the absence of Segal and Lang is quite distracting, and secondly the new Overture can't even compare with the scintillanting original.

The Columbia studio album is the version to buy in addition to this, though both albums have their strong and weak points. As per usual, Elaine Stritch brings her impressive and formidable comic timing to the fore in the show-stopping "Zip", and Helen Gallagher's silvery voice is perfect for "That Terrific Rainbow".

A fine addition to your collection. [DRG 19054]

Randy Newman's 1974 concept album explores the modern contradictions and early-20th-century history of the Deep South with his bracing mix of irony, affection, and empathy for twisted psyches and hungry, venal dreams. What sounds like Southern gothic material is a virtuosic balancing act between light comedy and political broadside, shivering with moments of unexpected pathos: "Birmingham" is a booster anthem, "A Wedding in Cherokee County" a tableau of dysfunctional romance at once grotesque and touching, "Guilty" a probing confession of addiction, and "Louisiana 1927" a Copelandesque tragedy of the ravages of that year's historic flood. Capping it all is his classic, double-edged indictment of racism, "Rednecks," which turns the knife back on smug outsiders blind to their own prejudices. Rhino's 2002 remixed, expanded reissue caps the initial disc with a demo version of the ballad "Maria" and includes a fascinating salvaged-from-the-vaults second disc dubbed "Johnny Cutler's Birthday" (the working title for the project), featuring Newman sketching the finished album through songs and commentary. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars Good Old Boys............2007-07-17

I bought GOOD OLD BOYS when it first came out, being a fan from
hearing Newman's SAIL AWAY. This record helped me get through the
1970's (and beyond) when I moved back to the South. It helped to
keep things in perspective! One of my favorites of all time.

Really, I've turned more folks onto GOOD OLD BOYS. While a FEW didn't
GET IT, most folks were blown away by it. I've had it on record,
8-track, cassette, and now CD.

MARIE is one of the most tender songs ever written. LOUISIANA told of
the BIG STORM that wiped out the state in the 1930's - but this song
was a HEADS UP to all who listened - even more pointed post-Katrina.
GOOD OLD BOYS lays out the NORTH VS SOUTH (RACIST vs ENLIGHTENED) debate
with a clarity that no one would dare attempt to present except Newman.
A Wedding in Cherokee County is just plain GREAT! Back On My Feet Again
is one of my favorites due to it's EASTERN SHORE reference (my home).
I could go on about every song on this CD but I won't bore you. Just
go buy it and hear it for yourself - a true masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars I'm recovering.......2007-05-13

"Good Old Boys" is a classic album. I lost EVERTHING due to the flooding caused by the inadequate levees built by the Corpse of Engineers. Katrina took everything I owned, including this album. I was very satisfied that Amazon could replace it.

5 out of 5 stars an all-time classic........2006-10-25

i have heard at least 7,000 albums in the course of life's mad journey, and this easily belongs in my favorite top 20. literate songwriting that few can match, along with superlative musical craftmanship, make this an all-time classic that belongs in every rock/pop music collection.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Randy Album........2006-07-04

I love this album, it's so great! Every song is just to die for! As a song writer and piano player/drummer I find the music to be in good taste as well. I can't stop listening to it! If it weren't for this album I probly wouldn't like Randy at all, but now I'm nuts for him! I can't say enough about it. Go listen to it!

5 out of 5 stars ONLY VERY FEW CAN COMPETE WITH THIS .......2005-10-23

i wasn't so familiar with randy newman's work except of "i love LA" so that when i bought that record, i found myself completely amazed by the whole thing, this is pop but this is also blues, and the way he sings the blues is quite rare, i mean the intention is really there, his spirit is totally dedicated to the blues and his melodies are so simple and full of sadness and makes you want to love and think about a whole spectrum of things, of course "marie" is incredible but my favorite is "guilty", love the lyrics too: "it takes a whole lotta medecine to believe that i'm somebody else", america should be proud of randy newman, i mean in the white musicians, i simply don't know anybody as good as him in the us. oh i mean almost cause elvis, buddy holly, jerry lee...

5 out of 5 stars PSYCHEDELIC GOLD, THIS EP ROCKS!! THE BEATLES WERE HUMBLED WITH VIBRATIONS IN 1966..... .......2007-01-13

I can still hear some hiss and tape imperfections on good vibrations. It did'nt matter to me Vibrations still sounded loud and clear and for the best part cleaned up from the original master tapes. I like the extra tracks alot. This cd is simple and sweet and sounds great despite old original tape defects. I dont believe there ever was a stereo recording for vibrations. I enjoyed this cleaned up mono version of good vibrations and besides if their was a genuine stereo original recording of vibrations from circa early to mid-1966 I think it would have surfaced by now. Besides I think mono recordings sounded better to Brian Wilson because I beleive he is deaf in one ear. Enjoy this cd ep it may one day go double or triple what it costs now. Produced for a then staggering $100,000 Good Vibrations was the exclamation point to Pet Sounds in the fall of 1966 as the Beach Boys really stuck it to the Beatles. Due to these Beach Boy releases in 1966 the Beatles would have their greatest year creativity wise in 1967 as they would answer there well armed rivals with Pennylane, Strawberry fields, and of course Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. The Beatles created masterpieces from Revolver to their last magnum opus Abbey Road. My honest opinion (and this might offend Beatle and rock fans in general) 'Pet Sounds" and "Good Virations" were the blueprints to all Beatle recordings from 1966 through 1969. I respect the Beatles for their writing and musical creativity. I really feel that the Beatles were so amazed by "Pet Sounds" and "Good Vibrations" that with their releases from 1966- 1969 the Beatles really tried to capture the sound of "Pet Sounds" and "Good Vibrations". There is no argument from me, the Beatles did create masterpices from 66-69 but honestly, never matched the sound of "Pet Sounds" and Good Vibrations". If it were'nt for Brians over indulgences post Pet Sounds as the song goes God Only Knows what the Beach Boys could have accomplished for the rest of the psychedelic 1960s. Man I'll tell you there has been nothing before or after that sounds like "Good Vibrations". Brian Wilson is the man, the one man who made the Beatles and Sir George Martin realize that they to could be surpassed in talent, let alone by one man and that one man is BRIAN WILSON................

...and found it to be a nice little "single", with different versions of the song and the original B-side, too. Short and sweet.

1 out of 5 stars disappointment.......2007-01-03

Sorry but this didn't cut it for me. It sounded more like a amateur rehersal tape than what i expect from the Beach Boys!

5 out of 5 stars Can't be beat!.......2006-11-10

If you are a diehard Beach Boys fan, its very important to have this if only for the memento it is. If you enjoy listening to outakes and want to get a feel of the whole production I highly recommend this wonderful little package. Its the Boys and all the studio musicians giving their all to perhaps the most complex piece of music Brian Wilson ever wrote.

5 out of 5 stars My 15 Seconds of Fame.......2006-12-29

I've always loved this recording-- I had it on vinyl and then recorded it to cassette tape and listened to it in my car for years until cars went to CD players, then I bought the CD. But that's just the first half of my back story.

In October, Randy came to my hometown to play two concerts. My wife and I had tickets to the second show. We arrived early and ate dinner at a restaurant adjacent to the theatre. Soon after we arrived, a whitish-haired gentleman in jeans and a young woman sat down at the next table. "Psst!" I whispered to my wife, "That's Randy Newman!" I held off accosting him until he finished his dinner, but to get ready, I wrote a request on a napkin (this is standard Louisiana practice at piano bars). I introduced myself and made my request. I also reminisced about a show he did at the New Orleans Jazz Festival about 10 years ago. He remembered singing "Louisiana 1927" and "Rider in the Rain" in the rain that day. He gave me an autograph and said he'd try to play my request.

The show lasted about two hours and near the end, Randy introduced a request "from my friend, Dave Zimmerman". Wow! He proceeded to mention jokingly how the song would "break up the flow of the concert", but that he'd play it anyway. He then explained how the song was written about Albania, but that he had to change the setting to an southern US county for the American market. The song is "Wedding in Cherokee County" and it's on "Good Old Boys", Randy Newman's best album in an illustrious career as singer and composer.

The title comes from a line in the CD's opening and most controversial song "Rednecks", which features repeated use of the N word as he decries both Southern and Northern racism. "Louisiana 1927", the story of the Great Flood of that year, has become the unofficial second anthem of my state (after "You Are My Sunshine", which was written by a former governor) after the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Newman includes Huey Long's campaign song, "Every Man a King", and his own version of Long's life in "Kingfish". "Birmingham" is a gritty tribute to that Alabama industrial town. "Marie" and "Guilty" are just too beautiful to convey in words. "Naked Man" and "Back on My Feet Again" are observant and funny. Every song is a gem. I highly recommend this album to everyone. Randy's movie music for Pixar (Toy Story, Monsters Inc, etc.) is great and has gained him Oscar nominations, but his best work is still the wry "Rednecks" of 1974.

5 out of 5 stars Randy Newman's Love-Hate Relationship with the South.......2005-09-10

I have not heard all of Randy Newman's albums, but of his early works, "12 Songs," "Sail Away," and "Good Old Boys," I like "Good Old Boys" the most. All the songs on it are good, and the redneck concept works well. From a musical standpoint, I also found it more satisfying than "12 Songs" or "Sail Away." While those albums are stripped down musically, "Good Old Boys" uses guitar and synthesizers to greater effect. Although recorded in the mid-70s, "Good Old Boys" doesn't sound dated. With the recent catastrophe in New Orleans, Newman's song "Louisiana 1927," about the terrible flood of that year, is haunting and prophetic. At around 30 minutes or so, "Good Old Boys" doesn't overstay its welcome. In those 30 minutes, it says more than most bands do their whole career. It contains acidic social commentary ("Rednecks," which attacks Southern and Northern racism), colorful character sketches ("A Wedding in Cherokee County" and "Naked Man"), and bittersweet love songs ("Guilty" and "Marie"). Some of the subject matter might be foreign to people who don't know Louisiana history ("Kingfish" and "Every Man a King"), but the songwriting throughout is top-notch. "Good Old Boys" is a real treat, though Louisiana State University alumni might not like the lines: "College men from LSU/Went in dumb, come out dumb too/Hustling 'round Atlanta in their alligator shoes/Get drunk every weekend at a barbecue." Geaux Randy!

5 out of 5 stars 2nd Best Album of All Time.......2005-06-11

Besides "Exile on Main Street," this is the 2nd best album ever made. The songwriting is amazing, and it is an unbelievable record to drink to. Just ask my friend Myles--a no-nonsense kind of guy. He's into Puerto Rican women, big jungle cats, hanging out without his shirt on, and paintings of race cars. He'll rock you. Hard.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Songs.......2005-04-11

I'm with Stephen. 30 years of listening, and this album gets better all the time. "Marie" is fabulous. Of course, Randy's work in general is fabulous.

Don't let the title put you off.

5 out of 5 stars Desert Island Album.......2005-01-18

I have been listening to this album for almost 30 years and it is as fresh and satisfying today as it was in the '70's. As expected the songwriting and instrumentation are beautiful. This is Randy's best album. Give it a good listen. It is simply a work of high art.
