2 out of 5 stars Like other TEMPERMENTAL singles, it's unessential.......2002-12-09

The "Five Fathoms" single features the standout track from Everything But The Girl's 1999 album TEMPERMENTAL plus five remixes.

The single opens with "Five Fathoms (Original mix)", which was one of the smoother songs from the album. The second track is "Five Fathoms (Kevin Yost Everything and a Groove mix)". The lowest point of the single, this remix is dull and doesn't add anything to the original.

With the third track, the Club 69 Future Club Mix, things get back on track. This remix is fantastic, a deep and twisting groove that would be a killer part of a progressive house set. Tracey Thorn's vocals are transformed into a moving, somewhat sinister sound on this ten-minute long track.

"Five Fathoms (DJ Sneak Sneak-a-Dub mix) is, as its title indicates, a dub version of the original. As Tracey Thorn's vocals are the most important part of anything by Everything But The Girl, a dub would reduce the track to nearly nothingness. This is unfortunately the case here, as DJ Sneak has merely looped a few phrases over and over. Kevin Yost's second contribution, the Kevin Yost Enlightment Mix, is more successful than his first. This slow and sultry remix, which might be considered chill-out, relaxes the listener. Finally, the disc closes with "Firewall", a mix of "Five Fathoms" by EBTG's Ben Watt that is hardly recognisable as a version of that track. As with much of Ben Watt's dance work, it is lackluster and forms a disappointing end to the single.

While TEMPERMENTAL is a great album that I would highly recommend, the singles for the album are totally inessential. Unless you're a DJ looking to get the Club 69 Future Club Mix, I would recommend skipping "Five Fathoms."

5 out of 5 stars Like Kevin Yost & DJ Sneak.......2000-06-28

"Five Fathoms" is a beautiful track, and I think the remixes are only lifting it higher. Kevin Yost adds a beautiful piano, and gives it a smooth, jazzy and relaxed sound. DJ Sneak turns the other way. He brings in the dj-sounds, and makes the song rock all over the place. I think he makes it more nervous. Like both of them.

5 out of 5 stars Deep house remixes are the highlight of this package..........2000-02-25

How anyone can not groove to the Kevin Yost mixes on this disc is beyond me. The Club 69 and DJ Sneak mixes pale in comparison. Definitely worth the investment!

5 out of 5 stars There is one out there........2000-01-07

I am not a big fan of any Club 69 remix. They are usually jumbled, and pedestrian.(Cher's believe and their Sugar Pie Guy are two that come to mind).Their remix on this CD is the absolute highlight of a CD that you can't help but move to. It is an eleven minute pulsating tour-de-force that makes you constantly replay the song so that you can immerse yourself in it even longer. The only mix I didn't like on here was the Original one. The last song(Firewall) which is usually filler is also a strong track. If you've never bought a CD by EBTG this is a great one to start with. For anyone else who has a couple of their CD singles but has yet to get this, this tune is as strong as Single and makes you move more than Before Today(another five star CD maxi).

4 out of 5 stars strong single with unimpressive remixes.......1999-11-29

"Five Fathoms" is a brilliant track. Tracy's vocals are wonderful (as per usual) and the production work is way above par. So what the heck happened with the remixes? The Kevin Yost mixes do nothing to bring the track to another level, and the DJ Sneak dub is pretty uneventful. Peter Rauhofer (aka Club 69) does alright, but it doesn't compare to the original mix. They should have just extended the original and left it at that.
