Well into his 30th year of recording, Eric Andersen picks up where his 1989 masterpiece Ghosts upon the Road left off. His 15th album was eight years in the making, pieced together from collaborations with Rick Danko, Richard Thompson, Benmont Tench, Howie Epstein, and Bob Dylan bassist Tony Garnier. It demonstrates the virtues of patient songwriting in sensual love lyrics, sprawling wanderer's laments, and Beat-poetry-inspired litanies of sins and ecstasies. "He thought of his mother / He thought of the automat / The space shuttle / Jersey cows and poison lollipops / As the dry heaves rose in his chest," he intones over a smoky, funky groove. Of all the folksingers to find their way out of the '60s, only Dylan and Joni Mitchell have remained as restless and provocative as Andersen. His imagination has grown ever more sure, his voice has become an unearthly, stately whisper, and his songs are still shapes by a singular, exceptional artistic will. --Roy Kasten

    5 out of 5 stars Eric Andersen's Mature Tour-de-Force.......2000-05-11

I first heard some of the material on this album when Eric Andersen appeared at the now defunct Folkways Coffee House in Peterborough, New Hampshire on Thanksgiving eve in 1992. Andersen is the real thing, a super talent who writes, composes, and performs mostly his own material. That night his rendition of "Rain Falls Down in Amsterdam" brought chills, cheers, and a standing ovation from the hundred or so members of the audience, who were moved by his graphic, emotional, and deeply personal warning of the nascent rise of neo-nazis thugs all over the world. Anderen has long been a personal favorite, and is even better in person than on CD, which is no mean feat. Herein, from the opening bars of "Sudden Love" all the way to "Hills of Tuscany" he gives new credence to the idea that real talent can continue to grow and mature litteraly over decades and decades. Like James Taylor or Van Morrison, Andersen's music is based on timeless melodies and lyrics, but unlike these other superstars, he imbues his songs with a gritty edge that reveal his insight into the nature of things. Most of the songs in this CD are written by Andersen, (with the single exception of "When I'm Gone"), and the range of his writing and composition talent is apparent. His voice is at once sweet, mellow, and smoky, and his ability and arrangements based around his sparkling acoustic guitar work is marvelous to listen to again. Buy this album, listen to it, and be prepared to be entertained and amazed.

4 out of 5 stars A long way from thirsty boots.......1999-12-04

some people change and some just stay the same..trouble is most of this generation of writers just did themselves in.....thank god eric andersen is around to inform us what happens to talented writers when they stick around for the distance(ok ok dylan is still here but thats another planet)......eric has gotten sad about the world and our foibles and that could be a real drag to listen to but it isnt...he even makes a murder in chinatown groove along. If you didnt recognize the voice you would think this was robbie robertsons first solo album. So if you are expecting the old eric forget it but if you like the sound of change listen in

    4 out of 5 stars Lyrical & Intelligent.......1999-05-11

Like a fine wine, time has matured the work of this master songwriter. Sudden Love is about as close to a hit single as Eric is likely to have, but the depth of emotion and the sincerity of soul introspection is fine dining in an era when most music is like fast food. This CD compliments Eric's efforts with Fjeld, Danko & Andersen on the 2 Ryko CD's. If you're looking within yourself for answers, enhance the journey with this beautiful music!

    5 out of 5 stars a masterpiece !!!!!!!!!.......1999-04-10

Having been an Eric Anderson fan for more than a few years, it was a real joy to have him finally release a solo album. This album follows the path that Ghosts Upon the Road set. A true living legend whose songs never fail to evoke feelings. The song Rain Falls Down in Amsterdam brings to chilling reality the menace of racism. Not a bad song on the album, and such variety. An album you will truly enjoy.......

5 out of 5 stars Eric in concert.......1999-03-14

I haven't bought this CD yet, but I sure will! After seeing Eric Andersen in concert I'm hooked. His songs speak to the soul in a way that is hard to describe.

Although too "wilfully weird" for John Peel, this has become one of the seminal English underground records of the 1960s.

Modest yet egotistical, subtle yet overwhelming, dulcet yet cacophonous, this is one brilliant record.

5 out of 5 stars found by chance..........2002-11-08

It was totally by chance that I found out about Ill Lit. A friend wanted to go up to the local college town to hang out one evening, and while we were at a coffee shop Ill Lit's lead singer came in and handed us a flier, saying, "Our show's in an hour; please come!" We went, not knowing what to expect, and were met with some really pleasant, mellow, different music. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about the use of white noise et al in the background but it blends remarkably well with the vocals and creates another layer of depth to the sound.

Do give it a listen. The choicest tracks in my opinion are "Diner Girls," "Welshratz," "Prestonhood," "Whitewashing" and "I Would Be True," but there's not a bad song on the album!
I've already told some friends to seek it out, and I'm eager to hear more from this inspiring group.

5 out of 5 stars Heart Felt Music.......2002-10-09

A fantastic listening experience! A poet/song writer on par with the likes of the old Kristofferson; alot of soul, feeling and the heartfelt condition of life. Set aside some time to enjoy this cd, it will be time well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Totally fresh, new and exciting music!.......2002-10-03

Fresh, new and exciting are just some of the adjectives that come to mind when I(an older listner) heard this music. The lyrics are poetic and the music supports the lyrics. This young singer/song-writer is special(d.ahearn is how he identifies himself)and brings real listening pleasure in the otherwise woeful songscape of recent music. Keep at it young man-the music world needs your voice and vision.

            5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2002-10-01

Every time I listen to the songs on this CD I hear something I've not noticed before. It's freshness is what captures me and encourages me to listen again and again. The melodies are at times haunting and the lyrics deeply thoughtful. The sounds are infused with soulfulness and feeling. I am enjoying this and look forward to hear more in the future.

4 out of 5 stars A bit weird in places, but with some real gems.......1999-04-15

Pete Brown was Jack Bruce's chief lyricist in the late 60's and early 70's. This was his first album, recorded in 1969 with a group of session musicians (the 'Battered Ornaments'). It was also the third album I ever bought, after Cream's 'Goodbye' and Taste's first album. 30 years later I still play it and though I tend to skip the more 'inventive' (=strange) tracks such as 'Sandcastle', there are three real gems which make the purchase of this album worthwhile. Firstly, the original 'The Politician' which Brown co-wrote with Jack Bruce and was recorded by Cream on 'Wheels of Fire' and 'Goodbye'. Apart from the lyrics this is nothing like Cream's version - you have been warned! The drunken/doped spoken intro is a scream. Secondly, 'Rainy Taxi Girl' is a beautifully melodic piece of Brown's poetry and could have been a minor hit if it had been released as a single. It was after hearing this track on Kid Jensen's radio show (UK radio) that I bought the album. Thirdly, 'Travelling Blues' (or 'New Used Jew's Dues Blues') which is a lazy 12-bar blues featuring Chris Spedding on lead guitar. It must be one of the most original 12-bar blues ever! Lyrically and melodically the album is inventive and always interesting, if a little bit wild in places. If you are interested in the development of 60's rock it deserves a place in your collection.

The last 2 tracks on the CD version of the album were later additions to the original vinyl and I must admit that I've never heard them.

Brown went on to make a couple more very good albums in the early 70's with his next group 'Pipblokto!'. These were 'Things May Come And Things May Go...' (no longer available) and 'Thousands on a Raft'. Both albums feature fine guitar work by a young Jim Mullen who went on to find minor fame in the 'Average White Band', 'Kokomo' and as a solo jazz guitarist.
