About the Artist
David Kelley is an artist designer and commercial director in NYC. Graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design, he collaborates with such bands as Clergy of the Impossible and Snifter, who just finished their first CD, "Enroute."

Album Description
The first CD by electronic band DC-6. This New York City based band combined stellar beat and rhythm tracks with samples and synthesizer sequences to make a uniquely twisted but beautiful collection of songs. From the lusciously dancable pop sounding "Gamalon Harmel" with its german new wave bass beat to the politically charged dark parody of the NRA - "Hand Gun", ending in a symphonic composition "Mordesh" that harkens to something from Ralph Records.

Readied in the early '90s (but not released until the summer of 2007) this multi-tracked document of a strong twenty-song, two-hour set by the Dead from February 1971 in Port Chester, NY brims with subtle pleasures and myriad rave-ups. The sound is immaculate throughout, thanks to the group's adoption of radical technology for the time. The band was at a creative peak at the start of '71; both Workingman's Dead and American Beauty had been released the previous year. There are a few points where the group seems a tad lead-footed, but this is understandable as second drummer Mickey Hart had left the previous day for a several year hiatus after it was discovered that his father had ripped off the group while acting as their manager. Overall, the band 's clearly moving towards a more mean and stripped-down sound. And the rocking numbers like "Bertha"--debuted at this gig, along with a handful of other numbers--do benefit from this. To top it all off, the songs sung by Ron "Pigpen" McKernan here are among the strongest the blues interpretations ever recorded. There are a lot of Dead shows out there, and some have historic value, while others just sound great in terms of the performance and fidelity. This show has the full trifecta; it's not to be missed by even the casual 'head. --Mike McGonigal

3 out of 5 stars (Actually, 3 and 1/2, or 3 and 3/4 stars).......2007-07-25

After many years of delay, "Three From The Vault" was finally released. Nice digipak design, nice booklet, nice front cover with emblematic "steal your face" logo. As always, outstanding sound quality (sometimes I wonder: did The Dead have the best sound engineers of those times???).
Now, regarding what brings us here, the music, this is an obviously transitional Dead. This recording is, most of all, of historical interest, due to the fact that it was the very first concert after the departure of Mickey Hart and that many songs were premiered that night. Of course, these historical facts affect the group sound. First of all, Bill Kreutzmann had no trouble AT ALL with supporting the band alone. In fact, he started playing better than ever. Regarding the new songs, well, they are played generally in a rush, the lyrics are not always remembered (although it also happens with songs which were not new) and the band interaction does not flow freely as always. They generally sound instable, a little bit akward, but that is absolutely normal, of course. Anyone who has ever written a song knows it takes time to find the suitable vibe for each tune.
When playing the "old ones" ("That's It For The Other One", "Smokestack Lightnin'", "China Cut Sunflower"), the Dead do it with the usual absolute authority.
So, even though it does not seem to be a mind-blowing recording (an many other Dead releases), it is still extremely interesting to hear the band in the process of changing, learning and taking new risks. Far from anchoring in audience favorites, chances are taken and the future is set off. But, as we know, the Dead were always looking for something new, and once these songs were properly learnt, they were already writing new ones with new challenges. Just an test to perceive of the ever-evolving nature of the band: compare the version of "Playing In The Band" of this release with the one in "The Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack".
Once again, a delightful and interesting record.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite five stars...but..........2007-07-22

Well this isn't a super performance from the Dead, but it has it's moments. It's incredible quality sound, and Bob Weir's playing in high in the mix, which I appreciate in the 71-74 years.Deadheads will enjoy his lead work while Jerry plays rhythm.

Smokestack Lightnin and Easy Wind are great, and this from a guy who usually skips those long Pig raps.

I've always enjoyed 1971 "bar band" dead with its one drummer, and country and blues sound, as well as some of it's best material fresh, and it's young Jerry Garcia voice. If you liked "Ladies and Gentlemen", you're sure to like this one. The performances aren't as legendary, not quite as many awesome tunes, but it sounds better and it's a rockin good time.

4 out of 5 stars I know why this took 15 years to release........2007-07-22

There seems to be a little "mystery" about why this release took so long. Phil Lesh didn't like it and nixed it for release back in early 1993. Copies had already been made up and David Gans was even playing it on his show. Basically, what happened was, at the time, Phil didn't want to use any shows that had gone into already released albums and Dan Healy only wanted to use multi track tape so this show (from a run)which was recorded for Grateful Dead(aka Skull & Roses) but not used, was pulled out. This was the second night. The first night found the debut of 6 songs(Bertha, Greatest Story, Johnny B Goode, Wharf Rat, Loser and Playing In The Band) and was the last show for Mickey Hart(Ned Lagin also played Keyboards at that show). This was the first show with just Billy again since September 1967. This show also found 2 new songs(Bird Song and Deal) being pulled out as well as repeats of some of the new stuff from the night before. When it was brought out in Dupree's Diamond News that songs like Bird Song made it's first appearence here, Phil said "Yeah, but the problem was, it sounds like the first". Later in the year, the band asked Dick to start picking 2 track tapes for release and Healy was fired early the next year. As for the performance itself, I like it. The Truckin' blows away the so so version on Ladies And Gentleman. The Pig Pen songs are strong. Many(including Phil) have said that spring tour of 1971 might have been Pig's strongest period. Dark Hollow is always welcome and a nice That's It For The Other One. Yeah, I like it but then I liked it back in 1993 too!!!

3 out of 5 stars Big on highs and understandable lows .......2007-07-13

Probably deserves 3 and a half stars but that isn't an option.
I won't try and turn anyone off this release because the "good" stuff is hot! I personally prefer full shows and am ready to accept that not everything works on every show but that doesn't justify an automatic 5 stars for every release based on the "good" stuff.
Is it one of the better GD live releases?? Not entirely - read on. The sound may be crisp and clear but some of the performances are a hard listen - PITB shocked me in this embryonic and sloppy version however, it's understandable that new songs have to be road-tested.
Yes, i know that they played a heap of new, still undeveloped songs that would turn into monsters in years to come - It's amazing that some of those very tracks like PITB, GSET and Deal ended up as grand as they did because listening to these versions you'd have thought they'd be dumped for eternity by the end of the month. Thanks to GD for NOT doing that.
There are heaps of positives to be drawn from this release - i don't beleive i've heard a better Smokestack, Hurts Me Too or Easy Wind. Cumberland Blues is always a "fun" track even if lines are forgotten. Did the band have an energy drink (or maybe something different??) before playing Bertha - sounds like it - gets you moving. Continuing on with that energy is China/Rider - a stand-out sounding more confident with age (and will get better after '71). Other One is my favourite GD song (along with UJB & EOTW) and hardly ever disappoints - this version is no exception. Wharf Rat rides on the crest of raw emotion, flows, and ultimately drags you in. Truckin' and Loser also deserve worthy mentions.
A single cd version for the average listener would be 5 stars and i've made a compilation of the highlights just right for the car (apologies for leaving out johnny b. goode which is one of the best i've heard but it didn't fit on the cd-r). This is it:

1. cumberland blues
2. hurts me too
3. bertha
4. smokestack lightnin'
5. china cat sunflower
6. i know you rider
7. easy wind
8. that's it for the other one
9. wharf rat

Was it worth the purchase - ohhhhhhhh yeahhhhhh!! They can keep releasing mixed-bags of goodies like this and i'll keep buying them and asking for more! Yummy!!

To have resisted Def Leppard's radio power in their heyday, you'd have to have been a critic--and even some of us could hardly argue with the likes of "Photograph," "Animal," and "Bringin' on the Heartbreak." Vault covers a decade and a half of hits by the one-time wonder boys of the new wave of British metal, but perhaps inevitably concentrates on singles from the multiplatinum Pyromania and Hysteria. It offers little meaning beyond fun fun fun, but there are hooks here that Noel Gallagher would punch a paparazzo for. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent retrospective.......2007-05-23

This is a great CD. Every home should have one as it contains a slew of hits. It covers their entire over produced era and sure, it rather ineligently sidesteps their first two albums except for a remake of Bringin' on the Heartbreak, but for the casual fan this collection is probably the bees knees. It's the perfect catch all release for radio listeners who just want the hits and a couple of other tunes.

And there isn't really a lot of complaints to be made about the track listing. If your a death metal fan you won't find much joy here but for a fan of melodic hard rock and the super smooth production values these dudes were known for then this is a must buy.

The only things that may reduce your desire for this album would be a) you already own this stuff. B) there is precious little from their first two slabs - no Wasted or Hello America. If you fall into the (a) category then try to chase down the edition with a 2nd disc with 9 live tracks on it. Given Joe Elliots going on record as disliking live albums these 9 tracks may be the closest you'll ever get to a live album from this band, excluding bootlegs.

All up a great round up of the years 1980 - 1995 and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Turn It Up!.......2007-05-13

Def Leppard rocks! All of the songs on this cd are past hits that will have you rocking all night long.

5 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.......2007-04-22

Why is this band still not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Can someone please explain this one to me. They deserve to be inducted much more than some other groups the nobody has even heard of.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE this CD.......2007-04-04

This is my second copy of this one. I wore the other one out. I loved it when it came out and I love it now. It'll get you moving.

5 out of 5 stars "This represents the beginning of the release of the vault tapes...".......2007-05-25

The title of my review comes from Dan Healy and the liner notes to "One From The Vault." It was the predecessor to "Dick's Picks" and the numerous archive releases that came in later years.

"One From The Vault" is notable for several reasons. Keith & Donna Godchaux first appeared on the mammoth "Europe 72," and their first studio album (Wake Of The Flood) was met with enthusiastic reviews as the result of the band breaking new ground with songs like "Weather Report Suite." The second, "Mars Hotel," was not welcomed as kindly by critics, even though it included Dead staples like "Scarlet Begonias," "Ship Of Fools," "U.S. Blues," and "China Doll."

On the third album, the band really stretched and took some risks. It was unusual for a band who had grown more comfortable with the live stage than the recording studio to invest the kind of effort they did into "Blues For Allah." The album generated what became one of the strongest pieces in their live shows for years to come, the "Help On The Way / Slipknot! / Franklin's Tower" trilogy. Equally satisfying was "Crazy Fingers," with its reggae overtones and "lazy hazy summer day" vocal from Jerry. "Blues For Allah" sounds like weirdness from the Brian Wilson sessions for "Smile"...trippy instrumentation and druid-like harmony vocals...not exactly "China Cat / Rider" stuff. The band took more than a few risks, and it was the last time they would release a studio album of this nature.

The 8/13/75 show at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall was used to showcase the "Blues For Allah" album. The entire album's performed, although not in its original sequence...in between "Allah's" tracks you'll find several Dead concert faves. Mickey Hart had returned to the band, from his self-imposed 1971-1974 exile. All of the band members were performing at the top of their game.

The next album, "Terrapin Station," was crafted under the auspices of Keith Olsen, perhaps best known for ushering in the Buckingham-Nicks era of Fleetwood Mac. After "Blues For Allah," Arista Records wanted a hit.

So enjoy the Dead, in their element, at the edge of their weirdness and brilliance. "One For The Vault" may not meet everyone's expectations of the band, but that's what the band was all about, right?

4 out of 5 stars The Dead return with a well-recorded bang .......2006-04-08

This live recording (8/13/75) ushered the Dead back after a hiatus from live playing/touring. In fact, the specific purpose of this 1975 concert was to premiere the release of their 1975 studio album, Blues for Allah to a small audience of record executive-types and other selected folks. I snagged this live disc when it was first released in 1991, after listening to slowly disintegrating "booted" tapes of the concert. At the time, the change in media and the improvement in sound quality were both very welcome. Speaking of which, for those of you that are audiophiles, there is a very detailed discussion of the analog to digital transfer process in the CD liner notes. For those of you that don't care about the Ampex MM-1100, Sony PCM-1630 Digital Audio Processor, this, that, and the other - trust me, the sound quality is excellent.

I guess the best way to describe this 2 CD set is to briefly chit-chat about the Blues for Allah studio album itself, and then the actual live performance.

The Studio Album

The music that the Dead recorded for the Blues for Allah album was at times lighthearted and bouncy (The Music Never Stopped; Franklins Tower); quiet and pastoral (Sage and Spirit; Crazy Fingers); experimental in an almost European avant-garde way (the completely "out there" epic 20+ minute title track); and jazzy with intricate ensemble playing (the rest of the album). Although this may sound like a dry and studied "chop-fest", the complexity and jazziness are handled very well and do not go over the top. Actually, I wouldn't care even if it did - the band is comprised of excellent musicians and I for one love to hear Jerry and Phil strut their stuff.

The 2 CD Live Set (8/13/75)

Overall, this is a great live set, although it does not sound as dynamic as other shows. The energy levels are up there, the playing is excellent, and there are some inspired jams, but the audience has been all but mixed out. In addition to the Blues for Allah material, there are a few concert favorites (Around and Around, Big River, Goin' Down the Road), pretty good jams including the 14'32" Eyes of the World>Drums and the amazing 18'41" Crazy Fingers>Drums>The Other One, along with OK versions of It must have been the Roses, Sugaree, and U.S. Blues.

All in all, I have to say that is yet another fine live set by the Dead and is certainly worth adding to the collection. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars FIVE STARS AIN'T ENOUGH.......2005-12-14

DON'T GET IT?
DON'T UNDERSTAND WHATS SO COOL ABOUT THE DEAD?

Maybe you just haven't been looking at the right places. This is where you should start.

I always liked The Dead but can't say I ever really "felt it" untill I purchased this one. Once that introduction track gets going "Good evening, we welcome you, on behalf of the group...." the ball is rolling. Each member chimes in when qued untill Mr. Jerry Garcia brings it all together, "Would you welcome please, the Grateful Dead." It just sounds so god damned proffesional. HELP>SLIP>FRANKLIN were introduced to me via this one. Instantly I realized that I had just been converted from casual fan to DEAD HEAD status. If you don't fall in love with this stuff right away it will surely grow on you. Disc two opens in stellar fashion with SUGAREE and BIG RIVER (J.CASH) all above mentioned tracks remain my all time faves (excluding all PIGPEN stuff*) But there isn't a weak moment on these two discs. Jerry's guitar is on fire creating beauty untouched by anyone else. The band is at there absolute most solid.
There is a vibe here that I've never found on any other Dead recording, or anywhere else.

If you ask me they should issue this album to Junior High school kids, with a bong and a tie dye shirt.

3 out of 5 stars a classic show........2005-06-27

This was the Dead's comeback show after a six month hiatus. It was a private concert for radio execs to promote the the bands new album "Blues for Allah." A bootleg of this show was widely circulated for many years and was considered by a few to be among the Dead's finest shows. With the release of "From the Vault" you can now own a crispy multi-track copy of the show on disc. Listening to these discs on a hi-fi with headphones is a real thrill: the separation of each instrument and voice is very impressive. The Help>Slipknop>Frankin opener is quite good. As is this version of Eyes of the World. I don't care for the performances of some of these songs (Suguree comes to mind). The band seems a bit stiff at certain points. But over all this this is a nice set to listen to, especially in such a sharp format.

5 out of 5 stars Setting a new standard for Neo-Soul!.......2006-06-23

This is the of the most reflective, soulful, lyrically poingnat album neo-soul or otherwise that has surfaced in a long time. There has been such a dry spell of good music that the freshness of this album quenches the thirsty ears of fans of music with soul. One of the suprises on the album was the song called "Change For Me". This song has been pumpin' in all the clubs in Chicago. The house-headz have been "jackin'" to ths cut for the past couple of summers. Soul is back...thank goodness.

5 out of 5 stars It's like listening to silk.......2006-02-27

I've owned this CD for a couple of years and have been meaning to write a glowing review of it for ages. Eric Roberson's voice is a true joy to hear and the way he writes his lyrics sends chills up my spine. There is a honesty in his music that travels across boundaries to a place where your true feelings reside. My favorite song is "Past Paradise" in which he opens with the words, "I lay here at night trying to shake the taste of marathon kisses." Words are truly powerful things and Eric is truly a master of them. Men can appreciate him because he speaks of things men don't talk about and women will enjoy him because, well...just listen and you'll see.

4 out of 5 stars The Title should be "The Vault 4.0".......2006-02-25

I ordered this cd after browsing through amazon r& b artists, and his name popped up. Wow! This Cd is tight! He is a cross between
Dwele and Raheem DeVaughn , yet he has his own vibe! I am going to cop his other cd's because this one is so good. Standout tracks
are "Couldn't hear me", "Right Back To You", "Please Dont Leave Me", "Deaf Ears", "Past Paradise" , "She Ought To KNow" and bonus track "I Have a Song" , "Rock with You", and I'll give the most
outstanding track on the cd "Find A Way" 6 stars out of 5!!!!.
This track is awesome! (sounds like Dwele). This is one cd that
anyone who loves neo- soul has to add to their collection.

Warner Bros. publicity materials peg this collection of previously unreleased recordings from Prince's long tenure at the company as "a noteworthy musical event." But Prince fans expecting something on the order of 1993's B-Sides disc or the oft-bootlegged Black Album are bound to be disappointed by The Vault. While well crafted and groove-wise, these 10 tracks provide little surprise beyond their general vapidity. Sparks occasionally fly, as on the Al Green-influenced "5 Women" and the funny Chuck Berry nod "Sarah," but this set intrigues much more than it entertains. Ironically for a 1999 release, it's ofte more fit for smooth-jazz radio than an apocalyptic party. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!!!.......2006-08-02

As a long time Prince fan, I must say, I was extremely pleased at the depth of the songs on this release and how COMPLETELY different this is than anything he has put out commercially. It is full of musicianship, creativity and just genious writing that I as a Prince fan come to expect. I think my favorites, though hard to pick, are "5 Women" and "When the Lights Go Down". It is obvious who the influences are on these cuts with their BB King and Miles Davis flavor, but still 100% unique Prince.

If you're a commercial Prince fan, this may not be for you. But if you love GREAT jazzy/bluesy/pop music all in one, this is a must have for your collection.

4 out of 5 stars It's Prince.......2006-06-14

While it is true this album could arguably be called "The Worst of Prince," understand that Prince's "worst" is still far better than many artists achieve in a lifetime.

Being a recording artist myself, I'm uncomfortable with the fact that these are cuts Prince never intended to release. I wouldn't like somebody going behind my back and putting stuff I didn't want heard out on the airwaves. Then again, I also understand that sometimes we are our own worst critics, and when you have as much talent and genius as Prince...maybe it's best to let it go and see what happens.

This isn't a bad album. Fans of Prince's older, pop-oriented stuff will surely devour this CD and come back for seconds. I liked it. If you're comparing it to most of Prince's other work, you may find it lacking. Taken on its own merit, however, it is...well, Prince!

5 out of 5 stars just like usual...a new Prince.......2005-06-14

man, I'll tell you want. Prince never ceases to amaze me. you have to love this man for his orginality and innovation. What many people try to do is trap Prince (like you can do to so many other artists) into a typecast as strictly a funk/rock/slow jam/r&b/ or whatever artist. But you can't do that, and if you try you'll inevitably end up not liking Prince, like so many people do, for no other reason than he's not what they what him to be. anyhow, this album is fire. listen to me, this album is totally blazing, I love. It's vying in my mind for the top Prince album to me. But be warned, there's no Purple rain or 1999 types songs on here, this is what I believe to be Prince in the transition stage from his Prince ablum to Controvesy. overall, it has a real bluesly,jazzy-pop kind of feel.like my title says, you've seen peeps and glances of this Prince but I bet you never knew he could do what he does on this "album".simpy freaking amazing.you just have to kinda go with Prince (real fans know what I mean) if you are an sometimes fan of Prince, when he is only rock or funk, or dance or whatever then truthfully you probably won't like this album.but this is for true fans of Prince, or even those who don't like him or are indifferent this is a new genre of Prince.smooth, jazzy, a slight blues feel with a covering of pop. lovely. buy it, and love it.

3 out of 5 stars A Fuller C.D. With Potenial..........2003-12-27

Its a Common Misconception that Prince himself Created this "Disaster" to hurt W.B. His the record company, when its entirely The Other way around, This was W.B. effort to Spit into Prince's Faces, Claiming they can make money by using his own Master Tapes that they own. Thus Prince labels this a "Contractual Obligation" C.D. Basically Warner Bros. Took Songs Prince Previously Recorded for them In-between 1999 and Under Cherry moon soundtrack "Parade"( who prince never bothered to release them and placed them on a C.D.) "OLD SONGS 4 sale" indeed, A lot of people have not heard this side of prince, The blend of jazz and funk with a fusion of rock is uncanny! And appealed to most people cause it came with the Name "Prince" and not "The Artist" , Competing with his 1999 C.D. rave Un2 the Joy fantastic a Funk rock fusion of music far from the likes of Old friends 4 sale,

It starts out on a high note with "the Rest of my life" I Have to be honest! I really hate this track, it doesn't phase me why Prince did not bother to release this, and a poor Choice fro an opening of the C.D. The Repetitive Keyboard beats are annoying and Prince Reciting "The rest day of my life " is rather haunting!
The Comes The Funky "Its about that walk" This was too upbeat to be a funk song, it sorta disgusted me at first because it was entirely too cheesy! But it grew onto me it can be enjoyable after a few listens!
This Track is probably Worth The money itself, the extended Version Of "She Spoke 2 me" Most only heard this song on low sound quality bootlegs, a Beautiful Fusion Of jazz and R&B, This track was the only reason I purchased the C.D.
Next is 5 Women... Great Song, the beat is rather Catchy! But not what IM used too from prince so it entirely doesn't appeal to me!
During this Point of the C.D. i was about to shut it off but then this song kept me interested again, The Hypnotic Jazz Flows caught me in a bind, This Song would go perfectly "When the lights do go down" This is Possibly the Prelude to Much of Prince's Success in Jazz Prior Rainbow Children and N. E. W. S. the Groovy Instrumental is to keep your toes tapping and your lips smacking your lovers tongue,
Then there's my little pill...
I Generally Hate this Song 2 , The Lyrical Organisation is annoying and the Melody is quite Off and annoying, I skip this track!
There Is lovely Sounds like a Live tune! It has quite some potential but it gets tedious the first listen, this one needs a few....
And Ha The Title Track "Old Friends 4 sale" This is a Watered Down Version of the Original Track that Premiered on the film Under The Cherry Moon, the Original Version Told of Treachery in Prince land, Prince's Former band Mates the famed Producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Louis, The Topic of Speculation Amongst the Prince "Fam" base, This is a watered Down Version that was Rewritten by Prince because the original was too personal to him, its All right but i prefer the Original
Sarah Is Reminiscent Of Morris Day Comically Funny! Its great to listen too with friends and just laugh about it
And It Closes with the R&B EXTRAORDINARY! At least it ended off on a good point I was left smiling afterwards most of the reason why I didn't return the C.D. Extraordinary is Great finish to a mediocre C.D.

All In All If your one of those Hard-core Prince Fans Buy this C.D., But if your New Just go to Apple music store or PRESS PLAY and Download 4 of the CDs songs for 99 cents, If your looking for Jazz trax from His PURPLE Majesty i Suggest Buying "The Rainbow Children" and his new Grammy nominated C.D. " N. E. W. S. "

5 out of 5 stars The Best From The Best.......2006-07-29

This is one of my absolute favorite CDs EVER. You will wish you had a time machine to get you to the actual show. The Dark Star > St. Stephen > The Eleven is orgasmic. Pigpen's "Lovelight" and "School Girl" make you want to listen again and again. There is a comment posted on this feedback that their music from '68 is raw - and it is - raw talent, energy, passion, and charisma. The crowd "noise" in the background is also raw - they are having a great time. You can tell that it was one helluva show! The music never stops.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent show from the primal Dead.......2005-12-20

Two From the Vault is psychedelic primal Dead at their jamming best circa 1968. Thanks to modern technology the Dead were able resurrect this excellent show from oblivion. Due to microphone placement there were phase cancellation problems with the original tapes making them useless for release. Thanks to Dan Healy the phasing problems were eliminated using computer analysis and time correction. Hurray! A great show was saved.
And a great show it is, replete with marvelous and telepathic playing by all members. From the Pigpen sung songs Good Morning Little Schoolgirl and Turn On Your Lovelight to the rolling thunder of the Other One and New Potato Caboose, it's all good. Morning Dew and Death Don't Have No Mercy being the lone ballads are especially emotional. Jerry's voice and playing are strong and everybody else rolls along with raucous abandon, Phil Lesh especially. I've become a big fan of '68 to '70's era Dead because they play with a fire and psychedelic thunder that they largely toned down as they became better and more refined players. While I love the jazzy introspection and much of the more country material the Dead started playing after 1970, there's just something about the raw energy the Dead generated in earlier years with their original lineup of Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart (he joined in 1967) and Bob Weir. This is the Grateful Dead at their raw psychedelic best and a really good example of how they sounded in 1968. They're not quite as good players as they became by 1970, but what they lack in harmonic sophistication they more than make up for in energy and passion.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic jams and superb sound quality!.......2005-08-29

As a newcomer to the Grateful Dead, I'm experiencing everything for the first time. And with the wealth of live and studio material out there for this amazing band, I'm in music heaven!

Two From the Vault (the remastered HDCD version released by Rhino in 2004) is amazing. Every instrument is crystal clear. I'm listening to the Dark Start/Saint Stephen/The Eleven jam as I type this and am astounded at the sonic quality of the music. Little or no hiss. Keyboards, bass, percussion, Jerry's guitar -- it's all here, sounding as if it were recorded yesterday as opposed to 1968 when this concert took place.

Many of the jams on this two CD set are mesmerizing. Really. I listened to this in the car driving down a long stretch of highway, hoping all the way that passing cars weren't looking in to see me with my mouth hanging open.

If you like the Grateful Dead, and you'd like to hear (with crystal clarity) how they sounded in 1968, this is a brilliant choice.

If you haven't a clue what the Grateful Dead sound like, but you like "jam band" music and/or you'd like to know what all the Grateful Dead hype is all about, then this would be a great place to start.

I wholeheartedly recommend Two From the Vault!

5 out of 5 stars Yes! The classic is finally back!!!!!!!!!.......2004-09-15

Two from the Vault was originally released back in '92 when the Grateful Dead were still together and our dear friend and my idol Jerome John Garcia (1942-1995) It is a live concert recorded back in August 23-24 1968 at the Shrine Auditorium in LA, CA. Well, the concert doesn't dissappoint. This was back when the Grateful Dead jammed a lot and their music was only psychadelic. This was before Workingman's Dead so most of this material you won't find on a best of album but it is, in words, unbelievable. This is a great slab of primal Psychadelic Dead when Pigpen McKernan was still playing keyboards and the Dead just smoked away with tunes like good old Dark Star/St. Stephan/Elevan jam that leads into Jerry's passionate rendition of Death don't have no Mercy. This is definately recomended to any Grateful Dead fan and I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Bloody brilliant.......2006-12-12

I can play this (both discs) over and over and not grow tired of listening...GLP has one of the most unique and gorgeous voices in all of music. this album is just haunting, esp. Stars 'n' Stripes and Crashing at Corona. this is not beach music, driving music, etc....it's serious turn off all the lights and draw the shades music

5 out of 5 stars Corona Alona.......2004-06-13

Wonderful collection, worth twice its retail value for "Crashing At Corona" alone (on disc 2). Beautiful melody, mysterious lyrics. Even after three dozen listens, it continues to shiver the spine. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars This is "Happiness"........2004-04-27

I'd imagine the majority of fans would have been happy with just a single disc hits album, but everything here is wonderful, and more is better right. Of course the first disc here is all the best, minus a song or three. It includes "Fuzzy", "Homespun", "Truly Truly", and probably their most popular song "Mockingbirds". I'm also glad it has "Honey Don't Think". The second disc is all b-sides and extras, and for the most part, nearly as good as the first disc. None of it really stands out to me yet, but it's all far from filler. As with any "Best Of" album, this is a great collection for the newcomer, and also should appeal to fans of the alt-country scene, etc.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to a great songwriter.......2004-03-17

Grant Lee Buffalo and frontman Grant Lee Phillips can definitely be regarded as one of the finest songwriters of Great American tunes. This "gem" of an album is a must have for any avid GLB enthusiast or anyone that appreciates a great collection of music.

This album not only provides a well rounded collection of the great GLB rips like "Fuzzy", "Lone Star Song", and "Truly, Truly" but the group has also graciously given us a second disc of outstanding tunes that won't be found on their other albums, including a handful of acoustic versions.

This cd set has it all and it delivers the best of the best. If you have never heard of these guys...definitely give them a listen...you won't be disappointed.
