"Hey Man, Nice Shot" may have been a fluke hit, but Filter's Richard Patrick has spent four years working on the follow-up album, mastering enough sonic variety to ensure that Filter stick around the moshpit. Programmer Brian Liesegang is gone, but Patrick continues on, picking up the slack and yielding nothing. Crowd reaction is impossible to anticipate, but at 70 minutes, Title of Record is an exhaustive collection of hyperkinetic guitars, subliminal melodies and thunderous dynamics--which is to say, it sports plenty of hard rock aggression, but is firmly rooted in the pop experience that keeps the songs in your head. "It's Gonna Kill Me" has a stalker's vibe in its techno-metal roots, while "Take a Picture" and "Captain Bligh" are radio-friendly unit shifters that suggest that underneath the technology rests a beating, and often bruised, human heart. --Rob O'Connor

Almost Perfect.......2007-03-20

I'd never heard a single song by Filter, that I know of, until listening to this album. I recently bought the Army of Anyone album and saw the band live; Realizing how great of a vocalist Richard Patrick is, I decided to check out this CD. "Title of Record" is a musically diverse album that begins with 7 great songs and then slowly gets worse. Having said that, that wasn't always my opinion. Writing this, I've listened to the album probably 6 times. I've listened to CD's before and haven't liked them, but after several listenings I begin to like it a lot. The first time I listened to this CD, the only songs I thought were good were "Welcome to the Fold" and "The Best Things."
I still think the former is the best song on the album. Now, I said the album was musically diverse. By that, I mean that many of the songs are different in various ways. "Welcome to the Fold" is a screeching, hard rock song that is nothing short of awesome. "The Best Things" sounds kind of synth-pop, "Take a Picture" has a moody, melodic quality to it, and "Miss Blue" is a 19-minute song that has about 5 minutes of song, 12 minutes of silence, and 1 minute of nonsense. The band has four members; Richard Patrick (vocals & guitar), Geno Lenardo (guitars & bass), Steve Gillis (live drums & percussion), and Frank Cavanagh (bass). Patrick is a very talented vocalist, but mediocre lyricist. He's capable of screaming his lyrics or softening them down. Either way, he sounds great. The guitar playing here is superb, the drumming (although I guess it's a drum machine) sounds cool, and the basslines are terrific. I'm going to separate the 11 songs into Great, Good, and Less-Than-Spectacular category, because none of them are bad.

GREAT:

GOOD:
I Will Lead You, I'm Not the Only One, and Miss Blue.

LESS-THAN-SPECTACULAR:
Cancer and Sand (which is pointless, but it's just an intro).

"Welcome to the Fold" is, as I said, a terrific hard rock song. "Captain Bligh" is simultaneously hard rock and soft rock. It shows that Filter can be diverse. "It's Gonna Kill Me" is slower, but great. "The Best Things" is a little synth-pop, but very catchy. While "Take a Picture" and
"Skinny" are the most radio friendly songs on the album. As for the "Good" and "L-T-S" songs, they just suffer from lack-of-catchiness. Although "Miss Blue" is almost great and "I'm Not the Only One" have a lot of tone changes and almost achieves greatness. Overall (and keep in mind this is the first Filter album I've heard, so for all I know it could be their worst album), it's definitely worth listening to. I got it for $10 bucks and there are 7 songs I'll listen to a lot more times in the future, so it was worth it. This is a great band and a good album...If you haven't heard Richard Patrick sing yet, you need to get this or the Army of Anyone album (which is actually better than this CD) because he's truly terrific.

alright..........2007-02-17

I bought this album in like...6th grade? anyway It was alright, 3 good songs, 5 decent ones, 3 filler. However, the fact of the matter is that this album is way too pop for actual enjoyment. After "Welcome To The Fold" (heaviest/best song on the entire album) you're basicly listening to what you hear on MTV 90% of the time. So to sum it up if you want to hear pop songs of the 90s (About 9 of the songs or so), then this is for you. If you want to listen to more heavier albums, download welcome to the fold and go look elsewhere.

Even better than the last..........2006-08-10

Well, Filter did it this time. They were able to put out something that has much more of a variety among each track. "Short Bus" was good but this is just a lot better. It's filled with great tracks throughout the entire record. What I've noticed with some average albums is that when it isn't amazing it's usually due to not enough variety among tracks. "Title of Record" continues to have great tracks throughout the entire cd and not just one or two either. From the hard crunching sound of the opener "Welcome To The Fold" to the soft melodies of "Take A Picture" it's all good. There's just so much to enjoy with this release. My favorite tracks would probably be "Welcome To The Fold", "Skinny", "The Best Things" and "Take My Picture". Here's what I think of everything else... (excluding 1st track)

Overall this album just has so much variety among tracks to offer. It has a few songs sticking to the "Short Bus" style as well as showing a softer side, which is just as awesome. This is the record where the band really starts to show what its all about. If you are a Deftones, NIN, or Tool fan you may like this. Give this a few listens and I'm sure you will find something you will like on it.

Couldn't get enough..........2006-07-31

At first I wasn't sure about listening to Filter until my bro got me into them and after that I loved it. I hate when an artist will put out a cd and all the songs sound alike and pretty soon you are really irritated and bored. But Filter uses alittle of everything in their music! I definately didn't get bored listening to it over and over again. BUT, I think that you should only listen to it if you are one of those people who like variety in their music and have an open mind. Filter probably won't be a smash hit with people who are only into one kind of sound.

Filter's well-balanced sophomore album.......2006-07-19

From the brief, ambient opening track "Sand", to the tenor goodbyes at the end of the closing track "Miss Blue", it's easy to see at all points in between that Title of Record was an open-minded step forward from the band's mostly angry debut four years earlier. This sophomore release presented an infectious blend of alt rock and raw energy, and yet it sounds the least industrial of Filter's two albums up to that point, save for a staticky burn-out which closes "The Best Things" on an awesome note. While this humorously titled release offers a hypnotically shiny platter of promising numbers, the real winner of radioplay on this disc turned out to be the lyrically sublime "Take a Picture", which hooked a plethora of new fans by way of a lazy tempo and a sudden confrontation toward the vocalist's father near the end. After an extended listen or two, Title of Record ends up being a must-have release for all who find themselves at home with intelligently written songs featuring just a hint of industrial aggression.

I am so very glad I bought this CD. I own the DVD of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and watch it all the time, so I almost didn't buy this, wondering if I really needed yet another CD.

Well, thank God I didn't pay any attention to that dumb idea!

If you love "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and Cagney, you just have to buy this soundtrack. It's like being able to take the movie with you anywhere ... it's not just the songs - as others have said - but also includes bits of Cagney's voice-overs, even the tap-dancing from the end of "Little Johnny Jones." And since the audio system in my car is better than my TV's, it all seemed even bigger, richer and better. (George M. would love that!)

What a find!!.......2003-06-15

I haven't been able to see this movie on TV since Turner bought it (don't get TCM), but if you've seen the movie several tims, as I have, listening to this CD is very nearly as good as watching it all the way through. (I'm so delighted with it that I'm even willing to forgive TCM for putting a paper ad inside with the disc.)

Monumental effort must have gone into this soundtrack, given the age of the original recordings. The tracks here are crisp, clear, and bright, with no evidence of how long ago they were first put down. The editors were also generous in their inclusion of dialogue that ties some of the tracks together (for example, we hear the man tell Johny Jones to watch for the skyrocket, then we hear the skyrocket as it leads into "Give My Regards to Broadway"). There are a couple of places where the endings are slightly abrupt but this is because, in the movie, the music fades into extended dialogue.

The only bit of dialogue I expected to hear in a song, but didn't, is in "Over There" near the very end of the film, when Cagney/Cohan has fallen in step with the soldiers going off to WWII, as they're singing "Over There", when the soldier nearest him says something like, "What's wrong, old timer, don't know the words?" and Cagney says, "Seems to me I do" and starts singing along. That's minor and pales next to how wonderful the rest of this soundtrack is.

One of the biggest treats on this CD is that we get to hear some of Cagney's tapping, notably in "Give My Regards to Broadway", "You're a Grand Old Flag", and - one of my favorite moments in movie history - when he dances down the White House stairs to "Yankee Doodle" near the end).

The outtake is not a humorous one, simply a track they decided not to use. It and the rehearsal tracks are all just the performers voices with piano accompaniment. I especially enjoyed hearing Cagney rehearsing "You're a Grand Old Flag".

If you like Cagney, if you like Cohan's music, if you like movies "the way they used to make them", or if you're not ashamed to get a little choked up with patriotism once in a while, you will not be disappointed in this CD!

A Soundtrack Every American Should Own.......2002-09-23

Finally! If you own that Hollywood Soundstage abomination of the "Yankee Doodle Dandy" soundtrack you can finally pitch it. Here is the real article. Rhino (Turner Classic Movies Music) lovingly restored the music from the beloved "Yankee Doodle Dandy" motion picture starring James Cagney. This soundtrack sounds astonishing considering it's 60 years old. It's very obvious some loving care was taken in it's production for which we all should be greatful. The liner notes also are great with informative text and wonderful photos from the movie. The marvelous George M. Cohan songs gives one goosebumps and bring tears to the eyes. We all need this type of patriotic pep rally, especially in these tough times. As I've said, this soundtrack belongs in every American's home just as much as that "Grand Old Flag"! I believe there are plans to release the movie on DVD, hopefully soon.

This is a well done album that has multiple standout tracks such as "To The Woman," "Cindy," "Hey Lainie," and "Wait For You." This album is more rock and less acoustic than their previous album "Back In The Bottle" which I gave 5 stars.

"If you only buy one cd this year..." ...You need to buy more music! But seriously, no matter what you buy Buddy is a must for everyone's music collection. The new recording of Wait For You is awesome, and with Spring here, this is the cd to take outside and celebrate with, while getting 'Giddy In The Sun'.

MOST AMAZING DISCOVERY!.......2003-02-19

Over the past year, I have become a huge fan of TAMMANY HALL NYC's music. I first heard them on the HBO commercials before the SOPRANOS and SEX AND THE CITY. I bought their acoustic record, "back in the bottle" and really fell in love with it. Since then, I ordered "BUDDY" and I could not be happier. This record is very different from the other record, but still expresses the same heart. The songs are uptempo and good-natured. "FRIDAY, YOU'RE WITH ME" is now one of my favorites. Steve O'Reilly's voice is amazing. He has this incredible ability to evoke real emotional depth when he sings. It's like he is talking to me. His lyrics are poetic, but not too much. BUDDY is an amazing display of songwriting. "SULLIVAN STREET" rocks like no song I've heard in years and "HEY LAINIE" is perhaps one of the most endearing love songs of all time. This band has something really special. I am lucky I decided to look them up. I hope they stick around because there is no telling what they might do next!

Don't pick this one..........2003-07-10

A very poor recording of the Yankee Doodle Dandy soundtrack. Sounds as if the person making the recording put a single microphone up against speakers while he or she was playing the video at home.

Album Description

The Wizard of Oz a musical with book and lyrics by L. Frank Baum and music by Paul Tietjens premiered on June 16, 1902, at the Grand Opera House in Chicago. It was an instant hit and made stars of David Montgomery (the Tin Woodman) and Fred Stone (the Scarecrow). On January 21, 1903 the show opened at the Majestic Theatre in New York. It ran for nine months and set out on the road with a second company right on its heels. The show toured, came back to New York, toured, and returned to New York again many times until finally disbanding around 1911. Stock and amateur companies continued to present it into the 1930s when it was overshadowed by the classic MGM film starring Judy Garland.

The show was legendary for its success and its impact on American culture. It was the Cats or Les Mis of the early 1900s--but the show has been swallowed by history. What made audiences of the early 1900s devour the show and return for more again and again? A Collection of the Original Oz Stage Productions.......2006-12-07

This Double-Disk Collection contains music from the original and varied Oz Stage Productions: "the Wizard of Oz", "the Woggle-Bug" (based on 'Marvelous Land of Oz) and "the Tik-Tok Man of Oz" (based on 'Ozma of Oz'). There are plenty of "Wizard" songs and music, but there isn't a lot of "Woggle-Bug" and/or "Tik-Tok Man".
I often wondered how different the 1st & Original Production of 'Oz Wizard' was different to the book, and thanks to Mark Evan Schwartz's book "Oz: Before the Rainbow" I found out for myself (WORTH A READ!!). Later I got this CD to go along with the book's stage telling (more or less) and I listened in interest to the songs which, I read, were entirely different to the future Musicals of Oz. The songs are good, but not all of them are actually completely restored to perfection, so the singing may/will sound somewhat muffled. Also, due to the time it was made (for some reason), the songs don't actually fit into the story (even the stage's rewritten story) and sound distant/unrelated. But there are songs that sound similar to the original story ("Rejoice! The Wizard is No Longer King"). CD 2's Track 3 has music played during Silent Oz Film "His Majesty, Scarecrow" on the MGM 3-Disk DVD.
The best thing about this CD Collection is the two booklets packaged along with the disks: the first (entitled "The Records") has writing on "What the Wizard Was" with a synopsis of the stage production story and "About the Recordings", a listing of all the songs on CD 1 (which are helpful for "Selection" Tracks not specifically named on the back) and notes on the songs like their origins and background. Booklet 2 (entitled "The Lyrics") has the words to the songs (in case you can't make out the words/want to sing-along). BOTH CDs include b&w photos of the actors, performance (few of which can be seen in "Oz: Before the Rainbow" book) and even reprints of a few illustrations made for the stage. The pictures are the best part of this purchase.
The Entirely Different Songs may not fit with the story, original or rewritten, but there's nothing really wrong with the music when one enjoys to what they're listening to.
I know that there is also another 'Oz on Stage' CD Collection called "Before the Rainbow" . . . hmmm, I wonder if I should get that too?

Ain't it a Shame!.......2006-05-20

I think that this is a wonderful album of HISTORICAL value. Not too many people know this, but "the wizard of oz" was made into a smash hit in 1903, but because all the history was BARELY in obscurity, hungry tiger press wanted to educate the blockheads in the world about this remarkable piece of history. that being said, david maxine collected all of the old material, such as Piano rolls (my especial favorite of all of them is "the poppy song", i LOVE the bass notes: "nnn-ded-deh mmmm-ded-deh"), and music boxes, and cylinders, and records!
however, it is quite a shame that that CRAPPY movie with judy garland pushed this lovely musical into obscurity. i would have liked to see it in my day, but it was already lost in darkness, but thanks to the highly DIGNIFIED people in the world, this cd is available!! BUY IT!!!! I *ORDER* YOU!!! YOU CANNOT BE DIGNIFIED WITHOUT THIS REPLACING YOUR "RAP" GARBAGE WITH THIS JEWEL!!!!

Why the 1903 "Wizard" was forgotten.......2004-03-20

This truly remarkable 2-disc collection of old cylinders, discs, music boxes and piano rolls explains why the 1903 musical version of "The Wizard of Oz" did not survive the early thirties. It wasn't because it was before its time or even of its time, but simply because it was way behind the times. Its producers resisted composer's Paul Tietjens' attempts to write plot-driven numbers. His contribution survives only in the incidental music preserved on piano rolls (and the most interesting element on this collection) linking very disparate and even incongruous vaudeville acts by various authors and performers that graced the stage during the musical's multi-decade run. In other words, Baum was telling a story and the songs were telling another... As fascinating as they are for historical reasons, those numbers are commonplace, mostly uninspired flash-in-the-tin-pan ditties, with timid syncopation and a stong reliance on musical clichés. There is not a single standard among them and not even a decent lyric where "fine" doesn't rhyme with "mine" and "love you" doesn't rhyme with "I do"- or even "I know you know I know you do", as happens more than once. As an assemblage of shtick pieces and ephemeral sentimental or nonsensical ditties, this collection cannot be topped and it represents a monumental effort. Without it and its very generous and informative liner notes, I would not have the same appreciation for the absolute genius of Victor Herbert's operettas ("Babes in Toyland" came out the same year) where the more memorable songs are plot-driven and introduced and linked by the most luscious, inventive and varied incidental music ever heard outside an opera house. This sort of unified concept would culminate in Jerome Kern's "Show Boat" and it remains a truth today that the integration of plot and music - reminiscent of opera - is the true secret of successful and perennial musicals, whatever the current idiom. This collection also makes one appreciate the complete originality of the Hollywood film for actually going back to Baum's books, entrusting the songs, lyrics and music to Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg and Herbert Stothart and scrapping the musical's colourful but checkered history (except for casting ex-vaudevillians as the main characters, of course!). Highly recommended for its nostalgia value, its irreplaceable rarities and a better understanding of the history of American popular music.

A long overdue revisit to a classic American musical.......2003-09-30

Although it was one of the most financially successful stage musicals of the early 1900's, very little information is presently available on the 1903 production of THE WIZARD OF OZ. In what was obviously a labor of love, David Maxine has done much to correct this oversight by releasing a 2-CD set with over 145 minutes worth of extremely rare recordings of music from this and other OZ-themed musicals dating back to before World War I. Recorded materials include vintage acoustical disc and cylinder phonograph records, piano rolls, and music box discs, many of which go back almost a century. In addition, he has included two booklets worth of historical background information on the 1903 WIZARD OF OZ production, its stars, the individual musical numbers, and lyrics for the songs included on the CDs. (Lavishly illustrated with rare old black and white photos and artwork, these booklets, and the information they contain, are themselves worth the price of the set!) Several bonus CD tracks are included that offer rare recordings by Montgomery & Stone (the original Tin Woodsman and Scarecrow) and Bessie Wynn, who was also in the 1903 cast. Not just for dedicated Oz fans, this set is a "must have" for anyone interested in the history of American musical theater and American popular culture of the early 1900's.

Long-Forgotten Broadway Hit Gets First Rate Revival.......2003-09-17

One hundred and three years ago, author L. Frank Baum published the best-selling children's book of the 20th century, THE WIZARD OF OZ. Although the book was adapted several times as plays, silent motion pictures, animated cartoons, and radio shows in the next few decades, it is the 1939 MGM film that most people think of as THE WIZARD OF OZ. The success and popularity of that film completely eclipsed the memories of previous incarnations and even the book itself in popular culture. However, prior to the film's release, there was a successful stage version which premiered on Broadway in 1903 and delighted audiences for many years, making stars of Fred Stone and David Montgomery, the original Scarecrow and Tinman. As with the MGM film, chilren who saw THE WIZARD OF OZ on stage carried fond memories of the production into adulthood. Ray Bolger was so impressed with the Fred Stone's Scarecrow, that he remembered it vividly as an adult and based his own protrayal of the character in the movie on Mr. Stone's stage version.

Unfortunately, time and Judy Garland have pushed the once popular Broadway Smash into history. It has been all but forgotten...until now.

As the show moved from theater to theater and casts changed, so did the songs. Many of these were recorded on the primative equipment of the day: Wax cylinders, 78-RPM records, piano rolls, and music Boxes, and surprisingly many of these still exist. Now, thanks to those hard-working gents at HUNGRY TIGER PRESS, you can own these historic recordings on this awesome 2-CD set. The Witch Is Dead!" here. Instead, this WIZARD OF OZ contains tracks like "Budweiser's a Friend of Mine", "Sammy", "Hurrah for Baffin's Bay", and "Rejoice! The Wizard is No Longer King", each one a portal over the rainbow to the Broadway stage of a century ago.

Obviously the play was quite different in plot from the movie--Dorothy travelled to Oz with her cow Imogene instead of Toto, for starters--, but the songs represent the style of popular music of 100 years ago and are collected here in a beautiful compilation. The set contains two booklets of liner notes which contain credits, lyrics, a written history of the production, and are extensively illustrated with photos and illustrations. Although the sound quality of the source material is not always up to today's standards, the songs are presented in the best versions possible, and the music is highly enjoyable. With 60 tracks and the wealth of information contained here, both written and photographic, this 2-CD set is good value for the money. A must-have for all collectors of WIZARD OF OZ memorabilia, an insightful look at popular music and Broadway history from a century ago, a glimpse into ethnic and racial stereotypes that were accepted at the time, and a curiosity for fans of the 1939 film, this set is big on appeal. Kudos to the Hungry Tiger Press for rescuing this treasure trove of musical history from obscurity!
