The Dirty Boogie

Editorial Reviews

Brian Setzer has spent much of his career revving up already hot retro styles to a booming pitch. While this generally worked in his early years with the rockabilly Stray Cats, it largely fails with his swing orchestra. Louis Prima--whose "Jump Jive an' Wail" is faithfully remade here--wasn't exactly the king of subtlety himself, but even he might have covered his ears at the blare produced by the combination of Setzer's (admittedly sharp) guitar playing and a too-bright horn section. A couple of The Dirty Boogie's cuts are cute ("You're the Boss," an Elvis Presley/Ann-Margret duet, is recast for Setzer and No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani), but fans of the Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy might think twice. --Rickey Wright --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars It's The Dirty Boogie For You, And Me!!.......2007-03-20

This is another one of my favorite CDs of all time. It features a rockin' big band with a band leader who plays smokin' hot rockabilly guitar on a big, fat Gretsch, and sings with an energy to match his stellar playing. It doesn't get any better than that! Every song is good: "This Cat's On A Hot Tin Roof", "The Dirty Boogie", "This Old House", "Let's Live It Up", "Sleepwalk" (this version being one of my favorite songs of all time), "Jump, Jive, An' Wail", "You're The Boss" (featuring the sultry vocals of Gwen Stefani), "Rock This Town" (the Stray Cats' classic, with the big band), "Since I Don't Have You", "Switchblade", "Nosey Joe", "Hollywood Nocturne", and "As Long As I'm Singin'".
I remember hearing "Jump, Jive, An' Wail", on Top 40 radio, thinkin' "No way! A Top 40 song with a smokin' hot rockabilly guitar lead!" That's rare.
But, what's also rare is Brian Setzer. He can make anything sound good, as evidenced by this CD, the Stray Cats, his solo CDs, and the BSO Christmas CDs. And, his live shows are always a real treat for longtime fans and those new to his music.

5 out of 5 stars that cat is HOT!.......2006-12-01

Great guitar playing combined with killer arrangements and great singing. I love this album. I don't get tired of this album. I just keep playing it over and over year after year. It's a cool, fun ride with great all around musicianship.
I don't think I could pick a favorite song...they are all too hooky (be it vocally or musically) to choose among them.

4 out of 5 stars "Jump, Jive an' Wail" to this album!.......2006-08-29

"Jump Jive An' Wail" is the first song I ever heard of the Brian Setzer Orchestra, but it's not the only worthy song on the album. The Brian Setzer Orchestra fits right in with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Cherry Poppin' Daddies, but BETTER, and with a bit more rocking out! If you're looking for the best example of the 1990s throwback to swing, please, I beg you, look here, and you will be more than satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Let's Swing.......2006-07-17

Great . It gets your feet moving and is great to hear updated versions of these songs. It would be ashame for these great songs to just go with the generation that first swang to them.

5 out of 5 stars Class act...............2006-06-03

Brian has always been a class act. He knows that the music that won World War 2 is still good. He adds the energy needed to resurrect it. SWING IS KING!

    5 out of 5 stars Exciting Music-Outstanding Performance.......2005-11-11

I am in total agreement with Darin Tysdal's comments about this CD and can only add that although each Etude addresses a technical aspect of piano performance, they can more than hold their own as independent, entertaining works. Ms. Dissanayake's performance is impressive, both for her sometimes amusing and always clever interpretations as well as her obvious exceptional technique.

I've had the pleasure of hearing Ms. Dissanayake perform many times as the featured pianist in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's MusicNow series of contemporary music, and can attest that her performances of this often "difficult" music are always outstanding. Chicago critics have called her "extraordinary" and "... (a) ferociously talented pianist"

The release of a second CD of more Etudes clearly confirms that Mr. Rakowski is delighted with this recording and the amazing Ms. D.

5 out of 5 stars Trancendental Pianism for some Trancendental Etudes.......2005-05-31

I couldn't believe that no one has reviewed any of these CD's of Rakowski's etudes! I first ran into them courtesy of Piano Today magazine, where they reviewed "Trillage". I also came upon C.F. Peters' editions of the etudes. When I saw a CD of his piano etudes, I had to have them. There are 22 etudes on this CD in no particular order (which can be frustrating, but Rakowski says that these can be played in no particular order, so why not follow the composer's wishes?). These are actually etudes having to deal with a certain technical feature, and you have a catalog of contemporary piano playing techniques as well as ones that Chopin wrote etudes about. The language is non-tonal (I shouldn't use ATONAL anymore) but sprinkled among them are tonal quotes (Beethoven's Fur Elise and Smoke On The Water) and great references to Jazz and Stride Piano which remind me of Nikolai Kapustin. My favorite is "Schnozzage" which uses the nose. I tried to play this piece-you have to memorize the hands and the nose parts because you can't read the music very well when your nose is in the middle of the keyboard! This etude is also very beautiful and impressionistic-and the nose has a solo! This combination of wicked humor, genuine emotion and feeling is a important part of Rakowski's compositional ethic (I just saw his website!) and very difficult but playable. Amy Dissanayke must be one of the most versatile pianists on the planet to be able to play this music with the same virtuosity, style and elan that each piece calls for. The recording quality is excellent. Do not overook this recording-if you like etudes of Bartok, Bolcom, Ligeti and Dusapin you will love these! Next, a review of more etudes on CD 2. We now need to hear the rest. There are at least 60 in all, I hear.....but he's probably writing another etude at this particular moment that you are reading this review! By the way, Rakowski teaches at Brandeis University.
