Editorial Reviews
A Listener Says
Their 1999 release, self-titled, Pro, is a smooth collection of 10 radio hits - clean and accomplished stuff with varying moods. Track 10, "Low", is a very artistic and at times a disturbing rock pop groove with it's backwards sounds and empty hollow keyboard patches - tinged with distorted guitars and a low register vocal that demands empathy, 'these thoughts they cloud your thinking hold you under, keeps you sinking down, no way of keeping pace.' Track 5, "Funny," is our favorite - besides it cool melody and lyric - it has an instrumental hook that hints of RUSH influences (but only for a second) - and the violent guitar chording with in sync drums and bass are inspiring. The chorus is perfect and runs for a while, collecting tension, released with 'funny that you should say' and that music hook, before relaxing into a bit instrumental that resolves into the next verse. The opening track, "Corporate Charts," is an anthem for independent artists who watch the charts and what's IN but still sustain their own vision and tastes -- meanwhile, this opening track, with it's XTC flavors, is about as "in the pocket" hooky pop that exists on the record - maybe the next big thing that hits those charts? Track 2, "Abigail" is a bass dominant gem about an obsession with the leading lady - 'i thought that taste had filtered out, it's not filtered out, still in my mouth.' Fun thoughtful alternative pop - with accomplished guitar, bass, and drums.

From the Artist
The self titled CD called "PRO" is a mixture of alt. guitar driven rock and commercial pop. Strong melodies, layers of vocals, whaling guitars and delicate passages are featured on this 10 song debut. If your a fan of Jellyfish, The Posies, Jason Falkner or Sloan, you will love the new release on ACCESS RECORDS.

Album Description
Power-Pop with melodic vocals and BIG guitars. In the vein of JELLyfish meets Reddkross. Sweet alternative pop rock, with open arrangements as far as instrumentation (the instruments breathe and the production isn't over saturated) - along with youthful energetic vocals approaching sweet gum, while lyrically, the band delves into mature and compelling areas of life - this is Pro.

Director Rob Marshall hired three of Asia's most fabulous stars (Zhang Ziyi, Michelle Yeoh, and Gong Li) for this Japan-set movie, so one wonders why he didn't put in a call to a local composer as well. Was Tan Dun's line busy? Was Joe Hisaishi otherwise engaged? In any case, John Williams won the assignment, and he didn't end up with egg on his face. Mercifully, Williams left the bombast at home and put cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Itzhak Perlman to good use in this sensitive score. The lovely "Sayuri's Theme" resurfaces at regular intervals, and it's good to hear Williams keep his showier instincts in check through a good chunk of the movie, as he delivers a more subdued sound. One of the most dramatic moments happens during "The Fire Scene and the Coming of War." By then Williams has basically reverted to the familiar, brooding mode he uses for ominous scenes, when suddenly the track integrates an excerpt from "The Folding Fan as a Target," a traditional piece for voice and the Japanese lute known as biwa. Though Williams is right to err on the side of low key, it would have been nice to get more of these stark sounds in his competent but ultimately unmemorable compositions. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I loved the movie. I also ordered the book to read. And now I've got the music. There is not a track that I don't just love. This is my most listened to CD of late ! If you loved the movie this is a must have !!!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT PRODUCT.......2007-04-07

the product was purchased in a 5 minute easy step process. The CD has come in an immaculate packing.

In INdia this soundtrack was a little difficult to source. Not surpisingly, Amazon had it.

Thank you Amazon. The product is great.

5 out of 5 stars great soundtrack.......2007-04-04

a great soundtrack to a great movie. the string solos (violin, cello, etc.) were especially great...too bad they didn't have more wind solos! but either way, sounds awesome and beautiful melodies. you can't get tired of this soundtrack

3 out of 5 stars Memoirs of a geisha.......2007-02-20

there are some hauntingly beautiful melodies and some which are not. I like to listen on my PC where it is easy to select the tracks I prefer; but, the entire cd is not very nice. If one recalls the movie, the are some music passages which fit the movie, but by themselves are not particularly pleasant

5 out of 5 stars Memoirs of a Geisha.......2007-01-21

Excellent music to accompany the film, takes you there without seeing the film , this is such a beautiful film as well and music excellent

4 out of 5 stars Good Traditional Japanese music.......2007-07-14

This is one of my favorite Japanese albums. If you're into traditional Japanese music this is a CD that you should have. I lost the one that I originally had and I finally bought another one. I couldn't beat the price and I think that this album is great. This is a must have CD if you're into this kind of music or just enjoy a broad spectrum of music.

4 out of 5 stars Super-relaxing.......2007-03-05

A very good introduction to koto music and a lot less cheesy than the concept would suggest. The first track is by far the best.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Japanese Music Album's I've found.......2006-11-04

Beautiful selection of Japanese music. Very calming and soothing music. Mainly slow, but does include some quicker pieces of music. Great variety of instruments used such as flute, violin and harpsichord. CD also includes recipe for a Japanese dinner. Great background music for a dinner party. If you like the Soundtrack to Memoirs of a Geisha, you'll enjoy this.

2 out of 5 stars Softener for the ears..........2006-08-26

I am not satisfied with this version of traditional Japanese music at all. In my opinion traditional Japanese music is much more impressive and intense when played on original Japanese instruments. The best example is "Sakura, sakura", one of the most famous Japanese songs. When it is played on Koto and Shakuhachi (Japanese flute) instead of transverse flute it has a different feel and much better quality of expression.

The whole CD is like a softener for an audience which might not be used to a non western sound. At the same time it will get a wrong idea about what Japanese music is and will miss its real quality.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Relaxing!.......2005-07-29

A gentle sample of fine, traditional Japanese music at its best. Highly recommended for the novice - "1st timer" - as well as those of more cultured taste. Hauntingly beautiful.

This set contains the two CDs that, it must be acknowledged, just about started the Chant craze in 1994. The music was actually recorded in the 1970s and 1980s (this new set has been remastered and sounds better than the 1994-95 releases did) and was on sale in Spain and offered at the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos for some time before it became "hot." Since then, hundreds of CDs of chant and similar music have appeared, many more polished then these, but perhaps these were so special because they weren't performances: they caught actual Monks in the act of praying, and the meditative quality is undeniably real. Whatever the case, this is music for reflection, calming down, re-fueling and getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life--which may be even more needed now than they were 10 years ago. Texts are not supplied and you won't need them; it's all about reverence and mood. Doing nothing but listening to this in 25-minute chunks will allow your breathing to slow and re-energize you. Each 55-minute CD will probably put you to sleep--and this isn't meant as a criticism. --Robert Levine

4 out of 5 stars Superb relaxation.......2007-04-01

This is a wonderful compilation. I greatly enjoy listening to it when I'm working on painting or another activity where lower blood pressure is a must. Having two albums in one makes the deal even sweeter. If you alreaddy own Chant I and II, then there's no real value added, but with mine lost in a move, it was a great return of music I enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars What a recording.......2006-12-01

Mystic, eternal, and meditative is how I would
describe these chants, a most perfect gift
for Christmas. This reissue sounds even better
than the ones released in the mid 90's.
I would highly recommend this recording to anyone.
The only rule is sit down, or lay back and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!.......2006-01-25

BUYERS BE WARNED - this set should not purchased in lieu of the two original Chant CDs but rather as a supplement to them. Because although both the Amazon.com editorial review and one of the two reviews available for the Anniversary Edition both indicate it is nothing more than a remastered version of the original two Chant releases from 1994, a thorough check of the track listings at Amazon.com (and at angelrecords.com) demonstrates that this is not the case. The sequence of tracks is completely different and there are numerous tracks that appear on one of the original Chant CDs but not on the Anniversary Edition and vice versa. The most complete is the first of the two original discs as all but two of its nineteen tracks appear on the Anniversary Edition. Chant II has less than half a dozen of its tracks appearing on the Anniversary Edition.

However, this complaint aside, I love the Anniversary Edition. Although the track sequence is different from the original Chant CD and I find myself expecting certain chants to follow others, I will in time get used to the differences.

Moving on, this is not complicated material. There is no polyphonic, raucous, symphonic accompaniment. There are no rowdy, raging guitar riffs from the likes of Pepper Keenan or Jeff Loomis. There are no ultra-funky looped drum beats, booming bass, or rapped socio-political venom from the likes of the Ice Cube or Public Enemy. There is neither a Cecilia Bartoli nor a BB King to sustain things by sheer virtuosity. There are only the exquisitely simple, melodic sounds of monks singing/chanting in Latin in a great, grand hall with nary a trace of echo to be heard. This is gorgeous, sublime, invigorating music to soothe the sores of the soul and heal the hardened heart. The raw honesty and utter conviction of the `performers' on these two discs drive these pieces home with a power that more practiced and polished performers dare not dream of. Even with no transcription or translation of the chants inside the booklet, this is music to be enjoyed by everyone.

My recommendation is to procure Chant: The Anniversary Edition immediately and be thankful that such simple and supremely powerful music exists to bring some light into our seemingly ever-darkening world.

Thanks for reading.

5 out of 5 stars Please ignore the other review on this product!.......2005-07-21

The other reviewer obviously does not realize that this is a re-release of both Chant I and Chant II. They have also been remastered. I highly recommend purchasing this 2-CD set because the quality is better than the originals, and the price is usually better than buying the first two separately. I wouldn't be without this in my music collection. Please do no let the ignorance of others keep you from experiencing this beautiful, ethereal music.

4 out of 5 stars For historical reference, a must have........2007-05-09

If you're looking for the best quality recording, it's not due to the recording technologies of that time; Allessandro Moreschi died in 1922. But, if you want to hear how a castrato could sound like, it's a great recording reference. Sound quality is average; a lot of hiss and clicks. The singer or the singing "seems" average too: a lot of scooping (remember: different times, different singing techniques, different tastes; could be the result of singing in the acoustics of the Sistine Chapel). But, I don't regret my choice because I wanted a recording I could go back to and appreciate the evolution of singing throughout history.

5 out of 5 stars A real rarity.......2007-05-07

Very interesting and rare recordings of the last castrato, even if his voice was at that time already rather exhausted. The most fascinating thing is to hear from living the voice of a Pope of the XIXth Century as Leo XIII was.

2 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-10-03

Professor Alessandro Moreschi (1858-1922),made in 1902-3 about 10 recordings all devoted to 19th century religious music. For us today the great question is: how far do Moreschi's records allow us to form any notion of the characteristics of castrato singing in the great periods? To that question there can be no certain answer, but I think that the resemblance must be slight! To begin with Moreschi's technique, far from being impeccable, often sounds shaky; in some passages he fumbles for his notes and wavers almost comically as Florence Foster Jenkins herself. These vocal shortcomings can hardly be ascribed to the singer's advanced age, for in his mid-forties he ought to have been not far past him prime. Ancient though the records are, they are reasonably well-recorded and probably give a fairly accurate impression of Moreschi's tone quality, if not his volume. The voice, unquestionably a soprano, resembles that of neither boy or woman, being stronger than the one and less sauve than the other. And I am totally sure that he is a long way from Farinelli. He is surprising, but never exquisite. The most painful for me to listen to were:'Ave Verum' Mozart- 'Crucifixus' from 'Petite Messe Solenelle' Rossini-and 'Ave Maria' Schubert. My problem with this disc is no doubt the fact that I would not want anyone to think that Moreschi's voice even in his prime was in any way equal to the great castrati singers of the 17th century!!!!

5 out of 5 stars What a beautiful voice!.......2005-08-16

Moreschi's voice is incredibly beautiful. You have to get beyond the fact that this is an old recording and just listen to him hit those high notes without sounding shrill or breaking apart. In the end, this is your only chance to listen to a real castrato, and a good one at that.

4 out of 5 stars A new world opened in front of me........2005-08-16

As a long-time lover of classical music but an amateur in opera I got interested into the opera voices and the castrato voices especially since I read a book about the castratos (Anne Rice: Cry to Heaven).
I was at first slightly shocked about the CD. Spoiled by our standards today I had to get used to the voices and especially to the low quality of the recordings (1902-04). The more I was listening the better I liked it. I started to understand that this long ago poeple were feeling different and therefore singing different. So many more emotions and so much suffering, you can hear it in the music if you can open up to it and, ignore the bad technical part of it.
I don't regret buying this rare recording since it gave me more than just music.
Thanks for saving these recordings and thanks to Amazon for making it possible to buy them.

This is the first of many recordings that attempts to return this opera--which the composer left unfinished at his death--to something more in line with what he envisioned. While it may work in the theater, it seems fitful on record, particularly with spoken dialogue. The cast, with Plácido Domingo in the title role and Joan Sutherland playing all three heroines in the flashbacks, has long made this recording a first-choice Hoffmann among some critics. But Domingo lacks the ideal vocal elegance, and having three different personalities as the heroines can be much more interesting. This recording does have some famous French character singers in its favor--Hugues Cuénod and Gabriel Bacquier--but this may be mostly for Sutherland fans. --David Patrick Stearns

    5 out of 5 stars A Fine Hoffman..........2007-01-25

First, I'd like to correct something said by a previous reviewer. This recording was made in August 1971, not 1976. Joan Sutherland is in at least as good of voice as she was in her 1971 recordings of Lucia di Lammermoor and Rigoletto. Domingo is in glorious, luscious voice. Any criticism of his work here is ridiculous. Bacquier does a fine job as the bass, though his high note in the "Diamond Aria" is less than first-rate. The Barcarolle is taken too slowly and could have been named "Belle Sleep" rather than "Belle Nuit". Sutherland is in her best vocal and dramatic form as the third heroine, Antonia.

    5 out of 5 stars A premium first choice.......2006-04-23

There is nothing as hard as picking one single recording of "Contes d'Hoffmann", Offenbach's arguably best and hands down his most `serious' work. Each recording usually comes up with a huge strength and also a remarkable drawback. The arguably best Hoffmann (Schicoff) is plagued with occasional ridiculous tempo choices from the conductor (Cambrelling). The usually-considered best quartet of ladies (Sills) happens to couple with the perhaps worst Hoffmann (Burrows) and a bland quartet of villains (Treigle). The best quartet of villains (Bacquier) appears alongside with a much less-than-ideal Giulietta (Sutherland). The best Nicklausse-Anne Sofie von Otter, in her small role, practically outshines every other member of a bland cast. The best Antonia (de Los Angeles) modestly sings her part in a jumble created by an all-star cast, all vying for the spotlight.
This being said, this recording of "Contes d'Hoffmann" is by far one of the best choices and is arguable the best all-around recording which deserves its fame.
Sutherland shines throughout the recording (at least most of it). Just as expected, her Olympia is dazzling. I have heard slower, thus more taxing versions; I have also heard funkier ornamentations in the 2nd verse (leading to a F3 or even G3). But never have I heard such a technically amazing, pure and funny interpretation of the doll aria. Her portrayal of the winding down robot is utterly convincing. Her "Oui, oui" made me burst into laughter. Hands down the best Olympia on record. Sutherland's Antonia is also surprisingly good. Her girlish tone greatly helps her in portraying the young and loving girl. And what a powerful trio! The D-flat at the end of the trio is simply jaw-dropping. 2 drawbacks in Sutherland's Antonia: The unclear diction (especially in "Elle a fui, la tourterelle", where so many consonants are left out) and the missing of vocal colors, which results in an unconvincing death scene. Antonia's swansong death trill certainly is mesmerizing, but Sutherland still makes Antonia sound too healthy after the deadly song. Sutherland's Giulietta is really not convincing enough. Her unclear diction somehow works in the famous Barcarolle duet, giving it the necessary mistiness to the scene. But her biggest moment in the act-the duet with Hoffmann, clearly shows that Sutherland's voice is too clean, too light to convincingly portray the cunning courtesan. Bonynge's edition of the score omits the septet and transforms it into the quartet in the epilogue, thus giving Stella a chance to sing. Because of this, Sutherland really has little space to show her greatest singing in this act, so much of Giulietta's music being left out. However, Sutherland is excellent in Giulietta's spoken dialogue-she really sounds evil and necessarily b*tchy. Her Stella is great, the E-flat at the end of the Quartet is breath-taking. All these being said, I had to pay very close attention to find out any weakness in Sutherland's quartet of ladies. She is by far one of the best Ladies, her only competition in the Quartet of ladies being Sills; and Sutherland's Olympia is by far the best.
Domingo's Hoffmann is well-known, and this recording shows why. His voice, ringing and powerful, convincingly portrays Hoffmann's anguish and struggle. His Kleinzach song is by far the best and the most captivating I've ever heard. Yes, he sometimes strips on some French words ridiculously and he obviously has trouble pronouncing the "-er" of most French verbs. But at least he makes the correct sounds and the diction is perfectly acceptable. He is one of the best Hoffmann's, his only rivals are Schicoff, who does not have an equally beautiful voice and diction but gets even deeper into the poet's anguish and Gedda, who doesn't as convincingly portray the struggling poet but comes across with a marvelous French style which he was famous for.
Bacquier's quartet of evils is definitely the best, on par with Jose van Dam's, blessed with the perfect French style, rock-solid tone and excellent melodramatic abilities of which a Hollywood actor could have envied. His laughs in the Antonia act really sends chills down one's spine and his spoken dialogue is crisp and frightening.
Tourangeau is an excellent Nicklausse, singing with idiomatic French style and beautiful tone. She is also (perhaps) the only Muse who can sound so terrific just with the spoken dialogue. Her spoken verses in the Prologue and Epilogue can just be described as otherworldly.
Cuenod's quartet of servants is good and very funny, although he seems to portray Cochenille's stuttering with some reluctance and definitely is a bit too nasty as Pittichinaccio; but his Frantz is moving and convincing. Jacques Charon's Spalanzani is HILARIOUS, by far the best on record. Plishka's a moving and caring Crespel and Lilowa's caught in a good day as Antonia's mother. Andre Neury's Schemil, however, sounds nonchalant. Finally, Bonynge's conducting is wonderful. The score comes to life and grabs you. He is also the one who arranged this very edition of the score and definitely knows it like the back of his hand.
If you want the best all-around recording of this wonderful and tuneful opera OR you are a big Sutherland/Domingo fan OR you want a quartet of Ladies and quartet of evils sung by only one singer as Offenbach intended, then look no further and get this recording when you still can. If you want the best quartet of ladies, either get this one, which also boosts a wonderful cast or Sills's version, if you can tolerate all the other parts, all average interpretations. If you are huge fans of certain singers then there are all possibilities of choice: de Los Angeles as Antonia, von Otter as Nicklausse and so on...Whatever your preference, try to get more than one recording of this wonderful opera and make sure they compensate each other. My choices are: This Sutherland/Domingo/Bonynge recording (4 in 1 for the Ladies), which has the best quartet of villains, the best Olympia, a first-rate Hoffmann and Nicklausse and the recent Alagna/Nagano version (4 in 4 for the Ladies) which has a nearly equally powerful villain quartet (van dam), a very decent and French Hoffmann (Alagna), an excellent Giulietta (Jo) and much more music to the Giulietta act. This recording is a premium recommendation. Believe me, you won't get disappointed.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice try, but . . ........2006-04-04

Source: Studio recording made at Victoria Hall, Geneva, in 1971 and first published in 1972. The digital mastering dates from 1986.

Sound: Good analogue stereo that was highly praised in its day. The digital version is perfectly satisfactory for all but audiophile purists.

Documentation: 270 page booklet. Libretto in German, French and English. Essays on Offenbach and on the creation of this performing version. Summary of the plot. Track listing identifies the main singer being heard and provides timings.

Format: Disk 1- Prologue, tracks 1-8; Act I, tracks 9-16; Act II, tracks 17-19; 71:35. Disk 2 - Act II (concluded), tracks 1-4; Act III, tracks 5-11; Epilogue, tracks 12-16; 70:51.

Cast: Hoffmann - Placido Domingo; Nicklausse / La Muse - Huguette Tourangeau; Olympia / Giulietta / Antonia / Stella - Joan Sutherland; Lindorf / Coppelius / Dapertutto / Dr Miracle - Gabriel Bacquier; Spalanzani - Jacques Charon; Schlemil - Andre Neury; Crespel - Paul Plishka; La voix - Margarita Lilova; Andres / Cochenille / Pitichinaccio / Frantz / Luther - Hugues Cuenod; Hermann - Paul Guigue; Nathana?l - Pedro di Proenza; Un laquais - Jean Valaisan. Conductor: Richard Bonynge with L'Orchestra de la Suisse Romande and the Choruses of Radio de la Suisse Romande, Pro Arte de Lausanne and Du Brassus.

Text: This is an intermediate or perhaps more accurately, an ad hoc version, recorded well before the establishment of (this week's) final text. Post-Offenbachian recitatives have been expunged and replaced by spoken dialogue. The order of performance is Prologue, Act I (Olympia / Dancing Doll), Act II (Giulietta / Venice), Act III (Antonia / Dying Soprano), Epilogue. "Scintille, diamont" is still included in Act II, which here ends with the accidental poisoning of Giulietta. The septet traditionally heard in Act II appears as a quartet in the epilogue.

In the booklet, Richard Bonynge, conductor and onlie begetter of this performance, writes to justify the decisions he made in altering the opera from its long-established, traditional form--or not, as the case may be. The recitatives take too long, he thinks, and Offenbach's numbers are obviously--to him--surrounded by dialogue. "I have left the inserted aria for Dapertutto and allowed Coppelius his accustomed song--the opera gains nothing by removing them and the ear is used to them." Elsewhere he says, "I find from performance in the theatre that the Giulietta act makes a double effect if it comes before the Antonia. This latter is of a staggering musical inspiration and needs to be last." He states that "It is imperative that the four soprano roles be played by the same singer", for they are all facets of Hoffmann's unattainable love, Stella. Similarly, the four villains should be given to one singer, as "they are all manifestations of evil in different forms."

Well, that's what Bonynge thinks. I certainly agree with him about the placement of Antonia in Act III. On the other hand, some bright ideas just don't work out in practice. Consider the recitatives. Listen to this performance. Now, listen to it again. On the second hearing all that endless dialogue gets wearisome. At each subsequent hearing it becomes worse, so that one is virtually forced to skip over it. Then there is the multiple casting. That only works if the singers are up to it. Bacquier, a master of French styles, is very much up to it. Sutherland is not. She sings beautifully, no doubt of that, but she really does not effectively differentiate the characters. Worse, she is at her droopiest with Antonia, the one who most demands snap and crackle.

Some operas are happy in the recording. I can name five or six "Trovatores," a handful of "Don Giovannis" and two or three "Rigolettos" that I'd unhesitatingly recommend to anyone. Finding the ideal recorded "Hoffmann," though, is like finding the flawless "Traviata" or "Fidelio." It is something of an endless quest. The 1948 Cluytens version is as authentically French as a Citroen car, but it follows the discredited traditional form, is in quite terrible sound, and suffers from some of the most Gawdawful supporting players I have ever heard. A later Cluytens version with Gedda, Schwarzkopf and de los Angeles is spoiled from front to back by the utterly mad casting of a baritone as Nicklausse. The Sills set, also in traditional form, fails with Treigle as the four villains. Some recent recorded versions have swollen to Wagnerian length by incorporating material that Offenbach, a true creature of the theater, would have tossed out at the first rehearsal.

This recording actually has many strengths. Domingo is a superb Hoffmann, even if his French is rather less than Parisian. He is a wonderful singer, but I can think of few other performances in which he is so fully in character as he is here. Bacquier always provides stylish pleasure. I had not listened to this "Hoffmann" for some time, so it was something of a surprise to hear just how very good Huguette Tourangeau was as Nicklausse. Why, oh why didn't her career soar to greater heights? Sutherland, for all her faults, was Sutherland, a thing of wonder. (I choose to say no more than that Charon, the Spalanzani, would have been quite at home in Cluytens' 1948 recording.)

The band and the choruses are all fine.

Some specific performance touches, such as the repeated outbreaks of maniacal laughter, the overblown line readings in the dialogue and the too common speaking over the music, get real old, real fast.

On the whole, this is a pretty good recording, a nice try at creating a definitive "Les Contes d'Hoffmann," but not quite a success.

    Four stars.

4 out of 5 stars A good recording, but not the best.......2005-02-03

This is a good recording of The Tales of Hoffman. Domingo gives a very good performance in this recording, his French much finer than in his Bizet Carmen recording. Still, his dictions suffers slightly. However, Joan Sutherland succeeds in giving a good performance as some of Hoffman's heroines. Very recommended for an opera library, but if you want the greatest Hoffman on record, look for Elisabeth Schwarzkopf's version with Nicolai Gedda as her partner tenor. That is the supreme record of Hoffman. The next one would be Sill's version

    5 out of 5 stars essential recording.......2003-06-30

This Hoffman is my favorite French opera. It features two of the greatest singers in their divine prime, Sutherland and Domingo. Wow, what a glorious sound they make. And what a tour de force they manage to accomplish.
The Sill's version is also very good. But it is tame next to this one. The singing is just not nearly as glorious. Compare Sill's Olympia especially is evidence that she is not nearly the quintessential coloratura as Sutherland. Sutherland's "Doll Song" is amazing. Its display of coloratura is unprecedented and incomparable. Domingo's vocal splendor is equally phenomenal.
This is an essential recording. No opera collection is complete without it.

Even though the title is a slight misnomer as more than half of the tracks are post-ars subtileor, this is an absolutely marvellous CD. Starting with Philipoctus de Caserta (ca.1370) and ending with Antoine Busnoys (d.1492), this CD surveys some of the best polyphonic secular and sacred music of the post-Ars nova Middle Ages.
The pieces are superbly performed by some of the very best early musicians of our day including the Orlando Consort, Ensemble organum and the Hilliard Ensemble. I highly recommend this CD for pleasure or instruction.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated, Under-credited one of my top 10 cd's!!.......2007-03-13

The music is intense and meaningfull, the vocals and harmony are great. It amazes me why these radio stations shove talentless bands down our throats when bans like this are so good but get no airplay. I can only wonder why they haven't had more recognition and I hope they release another CD soon!!

      5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-01-15

Excellent release for Lo Pro, with the former Ultraspank singer Pete Murray. Every song has its moments and the album blends together well. The vocals are unbelievable. I recommend this purchase for anyone who like rock music. Check out Pete Murray's new band Chokt on Myspace.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Band.......2006-02-23

This CD is great. Sunday was a big radio hit but the whole CD is very dynamic. The lead singer has a good voice and fills the music with emotion. I really enjoyed this entire CD.

4 out of 5 stars Solid good album but not heavy.......2006-02-16

Strange how you hear the same crap on the radio every hour, but bands like this do not get any play. It's like they didn't even get a chance. Yea "Sunday" isn't the greatest song in the world, but it's better than a lot of stuff on radio! Anyway. Beinging to end it is a good album, the corses can be a bit repeating. Howevr if looking for good rock cd, this is a safe bet. But don't expect metal or heavy riffs. In comparason to Ultraspank its not close. But if you have a soul at all you shouldn't be let down.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated, Under-credited, Robbed of Exposure.......2006-02-03

This is a must for any Ultraspank fan and like Ultraspank, this has been underrated in the music world, not given the credit it deserves, and robbed of exposure on the airwaves for some strange reason. Just about every track is worthy of radio play. I was hooked after the very first listen and I can honestly say very very few CDs have ever achieved that with me. Very emotionally charged music, great vocals, energetic guitar, expert songwriting, WHATS NOT TO LIKE! Powerful music form a collaboration of experienced professionals. An awesome mix of hard hitting metal. A must listen for anyone who likes powerful, energetic rock.

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Introduction to Igor Stravinsky!!.......2004-05-19

Sony Music's "The Essential Igor Stravinsky" truly lives up to its title. This double-CD set includes nearly every important piece of work (either in part or in whole) by the great Russian composer. The set also presents the pieces in chronological order beginning in 1908 with "Fireworks" and ending in 1966 with his final piece, the short but simple "Owl and The Pussycat". In between, there are excerpts from Stravinsky's most famous works including the first part of "The Rite Of Spring" and highlights from the "Firebird" and "Petrushka" ballets. There are also lesser-known works included as well as his harmonically rearranged version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" (a rendition which caused a stir in the early 1940's). The entire collection concludes with a rare recorded interview with Igor Stravinsky himself in which he remembers the infamous premere of "The Rite Of Spring".
The CD booklet includes detailed liner notes as well as a written tribute by Trey Anastasio of the band Phish. The sound quality of the recordings is amazing (even on the historic 1934 recording of "Piano Rag Music"). All in all, this an excellent collection of works by the great Igor Stravinsky. In a sense, this compilation gives the composer the 'rock musician' treatment. It's a 'greatest hits' album and a career-spanning retrospective that serves as an ideal introduction to Igor's music. Even if your not a fan of Classical music, it isn't difficult to listen to the works of Stravinsky and not be stirred.
      Definitely The Essential Igor Stravinsky!!!
