Armed Forces was the last title in a trilogy of albums that rank with the greatest three-LP series in pop-rock history. In retrospect, it also now appears to be the one on which the young Costello's pop tendencies peaked, right before they began to "mature" and grow less accessible. "Accidents Will Happen" features a melody line as beautiful as any ever written; "Oliver's Army" easily competes with the best of Abba and Brian Wilson among pop masterpieces. This is also where Costello's early themes--most notably romantic rejection equated with the horrors of neo-Nazism and modern politics--came together most precisely (the album's working title was "Emotional Fascism"). Rhino does its usual superb job, with wonderful remastering, in-depth liner notes by Costello himself (including a catty paragraph about famous groupie-author Bebe Buell, who often claims this album is about her), and a second disc of concurrent singles and alternate versions. Best of all are nine live tracks from the legendary June 4, 1978, Hollywood High School show, fully documenting that Costello & the Attractions were once among the all-time dynamic live rock acts. --Bill Holdship

Customer Reviews:
Possibly my favorite Costello album.......2007-06-08
Whoa, this totally rules. I won't say if it's better than This Year's Model or not, but I love it. Sure, it covers the same ground as the first two, but it's pretty well a perfection of Costello's mix of Stax-Volt licks, raw punksih energy, weird keyboards and paranoid lyrics. The singles (Oliver's Army, Accidents Can Happen, a cover of Nick Lowe's (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love and Understanding) are all the best of the album, but listen closely to other songs: the brutal Senior Service; paranoid Goon Squad, satires Green Shirt and Big Boys; the bouncing, ironic Sunday's Best; and the sardonic, unsparing reggae ballad Two Little Hitlers. And Costello's signature sneer is in full force, which certainly rules.
I don't think every track is great per se, but there's a minimum number of duds: Party Girl and Busy Bodies are far from Costello's greatest contributions to rock, but they're tolerable. Highly recommended.
A Pop/Rock/New Wave tour de force (4.5 stars).......2007-05-29
While dismissed as Costello-Lite by some, this is arguably EC's masterpiece. While retaining the feistiness of his first two albums, Armed Forces showcases Costello's evolving prowess in crafting really good pop(ular) songs. 'Oliver's Army' and 'What's So Funny...?' shine here, but there are another half dozen or so excellent cuts.
The Armed Forces bonus disc is likely the best in the Rhino reissue series. Alternative versions of 'Busy Bodies', 'Accidents...' and 'Goon Squad' are interesting. 'Stranger in the House' and scorching, live performances of 'Lipstick Vogue' and 'Mystery Dance' are classics.
Excellent value here at $14.99. Add another one of Rhino's 2-disc series and get free shipping!
Classic Costello enhanced by second disc.......2006-03-15
With Nick Lowe producing, Armed Forces turned out to be an album of very catchy tunes, which masks the acerbic tone of the lyrics.
The arrangements are especially great on songs like Busy Bodies, Green Shirt and Big Boys. My favorite track is the lilting ballad Oliver's Army, but every single song has a unique pop appeal.
Costello is amongst the most literate and versatile of rock musicians and especially on this album, the tight writing and clear melodies are prominent, whilst The Attractions must be the best band he ever recorded with.
The new tracks include alternate versions and live recordings, demonstrating his magic as a performer. Armed Forces is a classic of late 1970s punk rock, but has always been accessible to pop fans and timeless in its melodious appeal.
rock's greatest one-two punch.......2005-12-05
Most of us, even with our very favorite CD's, will have one or two tracks that we will always skip over for no other reason than that they are not just quite to our taste. Well the performances on this album, and on This Year's Model are so flawless that I will not listen to any Costello music unless I am in a position to hear every single song on both of the original versions in one listening.
Musically, the arrangements are substantially more ambitious than his first two albums, but the instrumental sophistication is always serving the craft of the song - Nick Lowe's production really shines. Steve Nieve stakes his claim as one of rock and roll's all-time great sidemen - he provides incredible power to both the rhythm and melody in "Oliver's Army", "Goon Squad" and "Moods for Moderns".
But once again, the songwriting is nothing short of miraculous.
With This Year's Model providing the greatest songwriting performance in the history of popular music, it seems unimaginable that he could maintain that standard - but he does!;witness lines like "it's a death that's worse than fate", "who put these fingerprints on my imagination?", "are you ready for the final solution?".
The extra CD's that come with the originals now seem kind of like gilding a lily - I think aesthetically it might work better to take tracks like that and put them in one 'rarities' box, a la "Taking Liberties". However packaged though, both of these are must haves.
Great album...........2005-05-01
I'm not gonna sit and write a full scale review of this one tonight. It's a remarkable album, Costello's greatest lyrics. Lately it has replaced This Year's Model in my Top 10 albums of all time, based mainly on the combination of incredible hooks, tight musicianship, lush production, and Costello's best set of metaphors ever (although some good ones show up on all his albums). The main reason I'm writing this review is to point out the source of the "ERROR" being discussed in a couple of other reviews (stating that in the song "Chemistry Class," the CD skips on the word "Action")... WELL... If you'll listen closely you'll notice that it skips of the word "ACCIDENTS" - the record or CD "skipping" is an aesthetic production flourish. A musical "ACCIDENT." It happens on the vinyl, the double disc CD, the single disc CD, and every copy of the album ever. It's part of the song. Just wanted to clue you in. Anybody ever notice "All Tomorrow's Parties" by the Velvet Underground does the same thing?

perfect for radio host.......2007-04-10
CD of patriotic music, armed forces songs and SSB. My friend is hosting moring radio show and wanted to salute the armed services and was looking for a "normal" good Star Spangled Banner .. Well we got it in this CD. Fantastic. Used every morning with a different salute to different services. KTIB radio 640 in Thibodaux, La.
Perfect for what I needed.......2006-07-10
I bought this to use for a patriotic program at a Veterans Memorial. It was perfect for that, and I received several favorable comments about the music.
PERFECT FOR YOUR 4TH OF JULY PICNIC OR BBQ.......2005-07-07
EVERYONE LOVED THE MUSIC (all instrumental) AND WE FELT IT WAS VERY PATRIOTIC. WE SANG ALONG WITH IT, WITH OUR OWN PRINTED WORDS AND HAD A GREAT TIME LISTENING TO IT AT OUR PICNIC.
Junior High School Band?.......2005-06-11
Well, all I can say is I'm glad amazon.com offered a sampling. The musical prowess of the musicians brought back fond memories for me......from when I was in 7th grade and just learning to play the trombone. If you're tone deaf, then this is the CD for your Fourth of July Picnic this year. Meanwhile, I'm going to keep on searching.

Eeww!.......2006-06-19
This is like the music to one of those theme park Celebrate America type shows. The musical arrangements have that hokey, somewhat dated, overly sweet and enthusiatic feel I hate. I thought I was getting the standard versions of these songs but what I got was the cruise ship extravaganza, yuck!
this land is your land.......2006-04-17
to think that "this land is your land" is a patriotic song is laughable at best, however is a common misconception of the song. you'd think that the creators of this cd would research the songs they put on the cd a little more, and find that "this land is your land" is actually a protest song (original lyrics contained lyrics such as "on that sign there it said private property/but on the other side it didn't say nothing/that side was made for you and me", an obvious attack on capitalism".
America's Favorite Patriotic Songs.......2005-09-30
The title says it all.
Good old fashioned "goose bump" music.
Great Place to Start a Patriotic Music Collection.......2002-09-12
This choral collection features a majority of the best known and loved patriotic songs from our country's history. I'll admit I was a little leery of the choral part when I first picked it up, but I've found that, for the most part, it works really well.
It especially stands out on the acappella version of "My Country 'Tis of Thee." It's absolutely stunning. Other fun songs are "This Land is Your Land," which I really wasn't familiar with before I bought this, and a personal recent favorite song "God Bless the USA." I love having the "Armed Forces Medley" on here so I can learn these songs. And the instrumental arrangement on "Stars and Stripes Forever Medley" at the end has me taping my toes every time I hear it.
There are a couple missteps, however. I've heard better versions of "The Star Spangled Banner." I think one reason I'm disappointed with it is that they only include one verse. I love the other verses of our national anthem, and wished they'd included at least one more since they included multiple verses of all the other songs. Also, "If My People" and "God Save America," while find songs, just don't seem to fit here.
Overall, you can't go wrong with this collection. I'm just starting to look for patriotic music, and this has been a wonderful first CD.

Less hot under the collar than This Year's Model, Armed Forces was partly inspired by Elvis Costello and the Attractions' 1978 American tour. The songs are set to deceptively poppy arrangements that use plinky Abba keyboards ("Oliver's Army," a hit single about mercenaries), Beatles-ish devices (the fade on "Party Girl"), and whimsical waltz-time signatures ("Sunday's Best") to mask their core cynicism. "Goon Squad," "Busy Bodies," and "Accidents Will Happen" are among Costello's most melodically powerful songs to this point, leading the way to the masterful Get Happy!!. --Barney Hoskyns

It's an amazing record for the keyboard work alone--truly stunning from start to finish. Perhaps one of the most unheralded keyboard performances of the era, but then again, it's always the guitar players who grab the glory...but seriously, the songs and the playing are phenomenal here and it goes to show what happens when talented people are successful and encouraged to not repeat themselves. Hats off to Nick Lowe for production above and beyond.

A brilliant album - the one that made everybody sit up..........2002-07-17
...and pay attention to Elvis. It is packed full of great pop/new-wave/punk tracks. This album made it clear that Elvis it a great, unique talent, and that he could consistently write songs of uncommon quality. This album probably formed the basis (or rocket booster) to his subsequent song writing career. This genre is not one that I am normally drawn to -- but these are great songs. Good album cover too (the original vinyl album had square color post cards inside and a strange and annoying 4 fold opening system!). Oliver's Army and Watching the detectives were hit singles from the album, but ever song on the album was good enough to be a single -- a rare feat.
MELODIC MASTERPIECE.......2002-07-11
With Nick Lowe producing, Armed Forces turned out to be an album of very catchy tunes which masks the bitter satire of the lyrics. Of the new tracks, the inclusion of Alison and Tiny Steps was a smart move. Armed Forces is classic of late 70s poprock.

It's OK not great but OK.......2006-05-23
The navy cadences are few and 14. Easy run (navy) is terrible. The marine corps probably has one of the best cadence genres and it's not well displayed. I have yet to find well choriagraphed cadences. I would like to find one with full songs and not just bits and pieces. like the super heros cadence with superman, aqua man, ..... or the full version of "momma got some big ole draws.......ding dong" or Marine corps colors. So many to go on.
Great Running "Music".......2006-05-12
Okay, so it's not really music, but if you're a runner like me, it really helps to have someone else keeping a cadence for you. It also helps to feel like you're not alone when you're running. I love this CD for treadmill, but it's even better for trail and street runs.
Hoooraaaaaaaaaaaah!.......2002-04-24
This should be required listening for every American citizen! Its a good way to hear how the finest men in the nation start their morning. There is no better way to begin the day then with a drill sergeant singing his tune. After listening to this, I'm ready to quiet my dull job and head to Paris Island with some real Men!!!!
Very Motivating.......2002-03-30
I originally got this for working on the tredmill at home, but find myself using it in the car to wake up in the morning, playing it as background sound during the day to keep my energy up, and even doing light marching under my desk as I work on the computer.
A great CD to have in your collection - besides there really aren't that many Workout CDs out there these days. I plan to get several more CDs by the same company!

Elvis completes his trifecta.......2007-05-06
"Armed Forces" was Elvis and The Attractions' claustrophobic pop masterpiece, loaded with melody and paranoia, fueled by cramped touring vans, hotel rooms and long stretches of listening to ABBA, Kraftwerk, Bowie and the Beatles while driving between gigs. It was also the last of the Elvis albums that mirrored the tightly wound image/cliched "angry young man" singer-songwriter of the new wave world. It also happens to be one of the most indispensable albums of the 70's.
Songs like "Oliver's Army" and "Two Little Hitlers" brimmed with neo-fascist imagery and highly charged sexual/emotional content, yet flourished with pop-hooks. "Accidents Will Happen" portrays a barely apologetic philanderer as he tries to explain the infidelities of his life, and uses one of early Elvis' frequent descriptions of romantic partners as a "victim." (Think of how many times that word appears on his first three albums.) Many of the songs bear unmistakable ominous threatening qualities, like the roar of "Goon Squad," the hushed fear that underscores "Green Shirt" and the implied threat of "they took me in the office and told me very carefully, the ways that I could benefit from death and disability" (from "Senior Service").
Nick Lowe deserves a good deal of the credit for keeping this album in check (and when is he going to get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?!?!). It is likely his pop sophistication that gave some of "Armed Forces" levity in its darkest points. It is also Lowe's one song - and the first cover to appear on a proper EC album - that brings the relentlessly downward outlook to a more optimistic close. "(What's So Funny About) Peace Love and Understanding" was the kind of song that, once Elvis claimed it as his own, provided a banner to his part during the formation of Rock Against Racism.
Unfortunately for this reissue, Rhino's 2002 double CD issue was also the CD that most justified Rhino's double disc reissues of Elvis' work. "Armed Forces" is the kind of album that more than holds its own as a singular entity, and the Ryko release that tacked the bonus selections on the same disc distracted from that sense of "piece" to me. So to have some excellent material on a bonus disc is just cream on the berry. Especially since it included the entire "Live at Hollywood High" recording as opposed to the three song bonus vinyl that was included in the original album. If it was possible to add a bonus star to an already 5 star album, Rhino managed that trick. That is the essential "Armed Forces." I understand that the rights to the EC CBS years catolog have turned over once again, but the double CD is really worth seeking out.

Hey Dels Fans, if you like del amitri albums like some other sucker's parade or twisted i'd be surprised if you will even recognise this album as a dels album. I couldn't believe it when I heard it and thought that it must be a mistake. My advice is to get all the other albums and forget this one. Instead, try The Wallflowers bringing down the horse, same style more polished music.
Not Where It's At.......2006-08-04
Hate to be the lone dissenter but I'm gonna be honest here. I became a Dels fan around the time of Twisted and Some Other Sucker's Parade. I'm sure I'm far from the only one in that camp. I picked up this album long ago (I've long since sold off the CD). When I gave it a listen, I thought it was a different band!
I can't say the album's bad, it's just a completely different genre of music. More Elvis Costello-ish than the melodic alt-rock balladry of sorts that filled the later releases.
If you're like me, a word of caution, this disc may not be for you. Buyer beware.
Justin Currie, in the liner notes, isn't kidding.......2005-09-11
about no choruses and too many words in these songs, but he's also right about the charm of this first album. This stuff isn't very sing-along-able (without a lot of listening and practice), despite the devotion to melody and harmonizing. Several of the songs are rapid-fire tongue-twisting soliloquies or jaded poetry rants molded by the beat and jangly guitars and a sort of punk attitude if not sound. Yet the music is lovely, poignant, affecting. Currie's younger voice is higher, more earnestly intense, but even here a talent to be appreciated. The long-winded lyrics are angry, agonized & naive sometimes but not stupid or (entirely) clueless. (I have no doubt "Crows in the Wheatfield" was inspired by Van Gogh's painting Wheatfield with Crows.) Already there are the plays on words and twists of meaning we've come to know and love in the Dels' songs.
I love the breathless adolescent rush of "Hammering Heart," "Sticks and Stones Girl" and "I Was Here"; the hopeless, sweet sadness of "Former Owner"; the biting, world-kicking, self-dissatisfied "Crows in the Wheatfield"; the hurt frustration of "Lines Running North"; and the beautiful but terrible "Keepers." Terrible in the sense of its subject, which isn't love but controlling, abusive obsession: "you may be bleeding though you're not dying, but you are dying to go/stop teasing me/I'm not seeing you leaving me."
All in all, this is a separate curiosity from the later Del CDs, is more than "mere" entertainment, but it has grown on me quite a bit since I first played it, and I go `round humming bits of this, too. The final bonus track of this reissue is a cover of Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl." It sort of grates on the ear and they're horsing around with it-can't quite tell whether they're sending it up or they like it (or both), but it leaves you smiling.
Glasgow does it again.......2005-08-09
Recently I re-listened to this debut which I was fortunate enough to discover when it was released. What is still arresting is just the very high quality of the music - the very warm rich sound, the sophisticated songs and beautifully Beatlesque (yet utterly Scottish - passionate, ironic) harmonizing, the witty literate lyrics, the wonderful pastoral/urban melodies. This is one of those rare records you play then find yourself putting on again an hour later. A striving comparison might be early James and the English Beat minus the beat if that makes sense. I also think of the Lilac Time and Stephen Duffy's rueful village romanticism. It's astounding how utterly different this is from anything Del Amitri went on to make. It seems after this failed commercially a decision was made to change direction in a drastic way towards the commercial end. I've yet to hear anything this brilliant in the intervening years. Good stuff.
i have to agree.......2005-06-17
if true art is something that communicates to its audience, then this is true art. a permanent top 10 lister, a desert island pick ... if you only remember one thing from your surfing session tonight, remember this: all the best musicians come from scotland.

Customer Reviews:
Very good choice for someone who loves American music.......2005-06-14
There is no doubt in my mind that Houston Symphony and San Diego Symphony are two fine orchestras that give a very good sound for these tunes. They are well played and directed and you will dream about America when you will listen this CD. The choice of tunes is excellent and I am sure that you will like. These two orchestras give bright colors to these tunes. A really good choice.
OUTSTANDING! It makes you want to stand and salute........1998-11-09
This is the finest collection of American Patriotic songs. From Copland, Sousa, to Kate Smith singing "God Bless America", these songs remind you of what those before us sacrificed so that we may enjoy, and sadly take for granted, such wonderful freedoms as those which we have today. I admit that when I listen to Kate Smith sing "God Bless America" tears fill my eyes as pride for America swells. If you love America then this is the CD for you. You won't be disappointed, I wasn't!!
