In the 1960s, '70s, and '80s, Songs of Angels would have been another singer-songwriter album with just voice and guitar. At the dawn of the new millennium, though, it draws in full accompaniment and the addition of loops to create a very rich and satisfying sound with extremely imaginative arrangements. Hailing from Seattle, jr has a soulful voice midway between Tracy Chapman and Macy Gray and her electric-guitar fingerpicking offers a lovely foundation that the other players can work off--including producer and bassist Brad Houser of Critters Buggin. The songs themselves have a thoroughly hypnotic quality that leaves the listener feeling buoyant. To be fair, this album succeeds in part because of the people who play with her, but jr's songwriting and voice provide the basis for it all. Songs of Angels is a triumph. --Chris Nickson

Album Description
Songs of Angels "was inspired by angels earthly and otherwise who have been with me through times i wasn't able to be there for me", says singer/songwriter/guitarist j r of her new CD release. it is a collection of eleven songs written by the artist and recorded with a family of musicians. "this release is more layered than previous releases, emotionally and instrumentally. we were going for creating an organic, spiritual and trippy feel. from violin to cello to bowed guitar with the core j r band it goes a lot of places that i think the listener would want to go...we even went to africa for a minute!

good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

Selections from the Greatest Voice of the Last Hundred Years.......2007-03-13

Mario Lanza was, arguably, the greatest tenor and greatest singer of this and the last century. It is difficult to appreciate him without listening to a variety of selections. This collection has some of his best recordings and exhibits the versatility and variety that he possessed that permitted him to "crossover" from opera to popular music with a ease.

I recommend this for those who already know Lanza to some extent but want to go into more depth and understand his marvelous skills.

A Must Have .......2006-12-12

I had forgotten what a beautiful voice Mario Lanza had. This collection contains opera and pop selections that exhibit the power yet sweetness of his voice. Fortunately, we have his CD's and videos so we can remember and listen to his gorgeous, vibrant voice and personality. I highly recommend this collection along with his wonderful movies, especially The Great Caruso.

WONDERFUL!!!!!.......2005-10-19

The Mario Lanza Collection is a three CD set and it has 61 songs and they all sound great. The mastering on this set is excellent and the song choice is very very good. It would have been perfect if they added a forth CD with more Arias, Italian songs and Sacred Arias. BUT still this set is a great introduction to Lanza. Lanza's voice was powerful and beautiful; if you are a fan of great singing, you will love Lanza. Highlights on this CD set are; Be my Love, Because your Mine, Serenade, With a Song in My Heart, Temptation, The Lord's Prayer, Ciribirbin, O Solo Mio, Ariverducci Roma, and on and on. They are many many great songs on this set, and I highly recommend it.

Much Anticipated.......2007-01-26

I have been looking for this CD for years!! Our family had a Shaw Chorale LP which contained almost all the songs on this CD. We had a number of excellent holiday albums and played all of them often, but we wore the Shaw Chorale album out! Not only are the musical renditions excellent and very similar to earlier Shaw recordings, the nostalgia evoked for this listener is incomparable!

A Taste of Heaven.......2007-01-18

I received this recording on cassette from a choral teacher, and played it so often that I wore it out! I especially appreciate the purity of sound and the arrangements in this recording. Lovers of choral music will feel as though "Songs of Angels" brings them a taste of heaven!

Alas that Robert Shaw is no longer with us. Throughout his long and varied career he gave us choral music with exactness,good pacing,and proper execution though not all musicologists would chose his renditions.
In "Songs of Angels" recorded in 1994 he shows us that even in later years he just kept going and going. Giving us stellar performances of masterpieces such as "Elijah","The Creation" and other large choral works. Yet in this album he shows the same attention to detail and
enraptures us with that special beauty of tone and ensemble which was
was to be Shaw's watermark on his life's offering.

This is one of the most impressive period albums I own. Wonderful for the holiday season. Will miss it during the rest of the year.

The Most Beautiful Sounds I Have Ever Heard.......2003-02-04

A fluid and seamless piece of heaven that transcends all classical and holiday music. This is an OUTSTANDING non-traditional Holiday CD!!! Many voices come together as one in these enchanting verses sung in languages other than English. It is just enough language mix to appease and intrigue the soul but not too much so that the listener does not understand the lyrics. For example, the English verse is sung then a verse in German and then back to English. Emmanuel is written this way. Other languages include French (Angels we Have Heard on High) and even Catalan which is a dialect of Spain.

Several of the songs were not traditional Holiday songs (at least for my generation), yet they were intriguing to learn and now I feel I know them just like the traditional ones. This CD offers a healthy mix of traditional and non-traditional songs on this CD.

If you can picture the most beautiful sounds you have ever heard you can come close to the joy this CD will bring you. It is February and I can't stop listening to it. You will not regret purchasing it&the only regret you may have is not buying all of Robert Shaw's holiday CDs.

Having sung most of the works on this album, I already knew they were moving and beautiful, but the crystalline voices of this ensemble, their blend and precision makes this a must-have for an lover of the genre.

This CD contains some of the most beautiful sacred christmas music ever written. The performances are exellent, and each piece follows the next in a perfectly balanced flow. One thing worth noticing is that in addition to the the most commonly heard version of In Dulci Jubilo by Scheidt it also includes the rarer and even more beautiful version by Buxtehude. That version is followed by the last cut, my own favorite Bach choral Ach mein herzliebes Jesulein. If you can't make it to church this christmas, listening to this record might be the next best thing.

Magnificat!.......2000-10-28

This is the most beautiful CD that I have ever heard. It has very religious overtones -- after all, it is "Music of the Nativity". Thus, it makes a delicious Christmas CD. The songs stir the deepest parts of my soul. The sound mix is prime and the performances, especailly the vocal and string renditions, are exceptional. The stand out songs are "Magnificat" and the two songs that follow it. This is like on a moonset/sunrise run on a big empty beach with the bright stars slowly fading in the violet hues of the gaining light. That is what this CD means to me. Check it!
