5 out of 5 stars Slider, you rock!!!.......2007-03-21

This one of my favorite T. Rex albums. I never get tired of this material. I have been listening to this album for over 30 years now and it's still rocks! This two disc set is just great. I love everything about it. The packaging, the essay about the album, but most of all, the music. Bolan was on a roll. The sound on this is the best yet, I had second thoughts about buying this for the third time, but I am glad I did. The sound beats any of the previous issues of this album. The first CD I bought of this album in 1986, made in France, had more bonus tracks, these were singles issued around the same time as the album. Fortunately these are on The Wax Singles, A's & B's 1972-77, so I haven't missed any of this great material. The second disc titled "Rabbit Fighter" is a very nice compliment to the album. Almost the entire album in alternate takes and mixes. This and "Electric Warrior" are two of the best of all time. A must have, especially for T. Rex fans.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most underated album's of all time.......2006-11-06

for some reason, Marc Bolan never has recieved the fame in current day United States that he should of. This album is a classic and one of my all-time favorites. the first time i heard it, it was so overwhelmingly good i didnt know how to handle it. now, every time i hear it, it gets better and better. if you are interested in listening to T. Rex, go for 'Electric Warrior' first, then this 'The Slider.'

5 out of 5 stars Many thanks to RHINO.......2006-02-02

I was in my early teens and The Slider was one of the first, if not the first, record I purchased. T Rex was my first concert I attended also - happened to be on my 14th Birthday. So will be bias in my review. But received the double CD in the mail yesterday, and enjoyed opening this CD immensely. Rhino has packaged the CD beautifully, including a nice booklet. I have listened to The Slider CD, and part way through the alternative mix CD, and the sound quality seems excellent. It is more than appreciated that a record company would take so much care and I suggest that any T Rex fan, young or old in years, or long term or a more recent devotee, should buy this CD. Electric Warrior may be my favourite T Rex album, but The Slider has many outstanding songs, including the title track, Ballrooms of Mars and Main Man, hit singles in Metal Guru and Telegram Sam, and the odd rocker in Buick Mackane. Although a pioneer in Glam Rock, I think both Electric Warrior and The Slider show Marc Bolan and T Rex had substance.

3 out of 5 stars "I wanna call ya . . .".......2006-01-22

" . . . I wanna ball ya, eeeeeeeeewwwwwwwww!" - "Baby Strange"

Wow people! It just doesn't get any more brilliant than that!

Seriously though, there's a reason why T. Rex's music isn't widely known today. Aside from a few choice songs, it really isn't all that great and most of it sounds pretty dated. Today, the majority of T. Rex's music sounds like fairly run-of-the-mill "boogie-woogie" rock n' roll. Marc Bolan does deserve credit for spearheading Glam Rock, but he was soon surpassed by David Bowie who made the timeless glam-rock classic ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS.

If you're new to T. Rex, just be aware that this forum attracts a lot of non-objective worship from die-hard fans. It's perfectly understandable that some people like this music, but moreso for those who were actually around to witness the glam rock craze unfold.

5 out of 5 stars T. Rex at their peak.......2005-11-12

T. Rex and Marc Bolan had the U.K. wrapped around their fingers from 1971 to 1973 as "Trextasy" was at its height. In 1971 the band released the seminal "Electric Warrior", which launched the band into stardom. Surprisingly, they raised the bar (and then some) once more with "The Slider".

Featuring two U.K. number one hit singles, -- the effervescent "Metal Guru" and the bluesy pop of "Telegram Sam -- "The Slider" is the band's best produced album and arguably the most accessible. The strings give the songs -- with their rough glam guitar -- more ground and a more lush setting, that pairs nicely with Bolan's earthly poetic lyrics. The title track is an esspecially great groove-filled song with an odd use of vocals as an instrument (other than singing).

The rough glam tracks like "Buick Mackane", "Chariot Choogle", and "Baby Boomerang" work well with slower ballads like "Main Man", "Mystic Lady", and the simplistic acoustic sound of "Spaceball Ricochet". The lyrical content still uses the same whimsical storytelling from his previous work, which is certainly a good thing. And the background vocals are used much in the same way as on "Electric Warrior", sometimes gratuitously, but usually effectively.

The remastering is done excellently, very much like the other re-releases done for the T. Rex catalogue. The crafty production of Tony Visconti (who was at his best at the time) and the mixing highlights the skill of Mickey Finn and Bolan's playing nicely. The bonus disc is a good treat as well, giving an alternative take of each track on the album, which are usually demos or acoustic sessions.

This album helps prove that Marc Bolan was one of the truly great prolific songwriters of his day, despite his steady decline in the mid-70's and his eventual tragic death. Thankfully, the songs still hold up today, showing the strength of his words and music.

The twangy sounds of the pedal steel guitar are regularly associated with country music, but like fellow musical adventurer Chas Smith, Bruce Kaphan takes the instrument into outer space with blissful ambient excursions periodically tempered by keyboards, bass, or percussion. Kaphan is known for session work with the likes of R.E.M., Jewel, and Chris Isaak among many others, and he has toured with former Talking Heads front man David Byrne. The luxurious atmospheres of Slider are instantly intriguing, including the trance-y, Indian-flavored "Back to the Light," the ghostly "Outpost," and the uplifting "Arc of Flight." Kaphan displays a wider range of sonic approaches for pedal steel guitar than many listeners may have thought possible with the 11 tone poems on Slider. --Bryan Reesman

5 out of 5 stars it works well.......2005-11-23

if you have listened at all to AMC cuts over the years, you'll know what i mean about the spaces in the music. the wonderful thing with this CD is that you get innumerable spaces, the break in the song, with a sense of gentle repetition. I can't listen to this without thinking of american music club songs, though at the same time it stands and sounds something like its own. It works. It needs to be purchased, and listened to. Works perfectly in the fore or background.

5 out of 5 stars Deserves to Stay in Print.......2004-12-20

This is not your father's ambient music. No whooshing sounds of astral wheels colliding. Instead this is a masterful soundscape of steel guitar that is plainly easy to listen to over and over like a great jazz record. In four years we have not once tired of it.

We were looking to give this album as a gift and were surpised to learn it was out of print. This is one record that deserves to stay in print. So come on Hearts of Space. Release this jem once again.

5 out of 5 stars Ambient Soundscapes - With A Twang.......2001-09-27

"Slider" by Bruce Kaphan is one of the most amazing records I've ever heard. The first two reviewers captured the essence of this CD nicely. I would add that the music has an emotional quality absent in much of today's music, ambient or otherwise, which is due in part to the artist's mastery of the pedal steel guitar and numerous other instruments.

The fluid, echoing drones created by Bruce's pedal steel go right to the heart, particularly on tracks like "Big Brain Small Brain", "Arc Of Flight", "Undeserved Ending" and "Shinn Pond". He also uses the pedal steel to a quasi-harp-like effect on "Clouds", the album opener and one of my favourite tracks. "Outpost", which clocks in at over 8 minutes, creates an atmosphere of vastness and desolation, without leaving the listener feeling "cold". For me, the artist has created a work that evokes a response bordering on the "spiritual", a perfect soundtrack for relaxation or reflection.

Truly a sublime aural journey.

3 out of 5 stars Slip sliding away.......2001-08-20

The more ambient tracks on this album seem to work for me. The first couple tracks seem to meander. If you like this stuff, search out some of Ry Cooder's soundtrack work, specifically the Johnny Handsome ST. As well some of the work of Michael Brook.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't take synths to be ambient.......2001-03-26

While the category of ambient music nearly always involves electronics, Bruce Kaphan has created a new kind of ambient with his steel guitar. The album's subtitle is "Ambient Excursions for Pedal Steel Guitar," and that says it all. The steel guitar is used to make nearly all the music on the CD, but not in a style typically associated with that instrument. A track such as "Outpost" is as spacious (and space-y) as anything by Eno or Serrie. The effect of listening to the piece is like quietly floating high above a calm but endless sea; utter serenity. The CD is not just a homogenous block of spacey atmospheres, however. Kaphan mixes it up with oriental or near eastern textures on some cuts, and also begins "Back to the Light" with a techno-ish swirl of grungy, chopped-up backwards guitar loops. "Slider" is a highly intriguing disc that I will undoubtedly return to many times in the future.

5 out of 5 stars "Slim Slo Slider" alone makes it worth it!.......2004-07-27

I have loved the 'Slim Slo Slider' album since I first encountered a used copy of it in 1982. (At that time, I was 18 years old.) The 'Slim Slo Slider' album is, in my opinion, Johnny Rivers' best album. It, much like Sinatra's 'In the Wee Small Hours', is not just an album; it's a mood piece. Yes, mentioning Johnny Rivers and Frank Sinatra in the same sentence is a bit of a leap, but this album ('Slim Slo Slider') is the exception to all the rules regarding Johnny Rivers.

5 out of 5 stars Into the Mystic..........2001-04-06

These two albums together make such an excellent pair, that this actually could very well be a double album. Each disc compliments the other so much that, having owned this for several months, I can't imagine owning one without the other. If (like me) you prefer J.R.'s later work like Rewind and Realization, this is a must-have. It includes some of his most beautiful covers ever - superbly sung & produced - as well as his own classic "Permanent Change." My favorites are "Brass Buttons", "Apple Tree" (both by G. Parsons), "Enemies & Friends", "Wrote a Song for Everyone" (GREAT version), "Muddy River", "Moving to the Country" and, of course, "Into the Mystic". Sure, it's nice to have the original artists' versions - but I miss the days when an incredible, soulful singer like J.R. could work his magic and make these terrific songs his own. Even if you are not a big J.R. fan (for example, I don't own any of his earlier records - but may some day), but love "singer/songwriter" songs - here you'll find songs by Jackson Browne, James Taylor, John Fogerty, Van Morrison, Gram Parsons & more. I wish J.R. had made twenty more albums like these two!

Marc Bolan's success was peaking at the time he released The Slider in 1972. Coming off hits such as "Bang a Gong" and "Hot Love," he packed Slider with anthems like "Metal Guru" (also a No. 1 British single), "Baby Boomerang," and "Rock On," built around simple rock & roll boogie riffs but burnished to perfection by Tony Visconti's ambitious production. Still, the album upped the heavy rock factor a notch; only "Rip Off" from Electric Warrior hinted at the blazing power of tracks like "Buick Mackane," "Chariot Choogle," and the meaty title track, a lewd-by-inference mixture of driving groove and hushed, between-the-sheets vocals. The ballads "Rabbit Fighter," "Spaceball Ricochet," and "Ballrooms of Mars" are detailed with dramatic string scores, and reveal Bolan's gift for turning non sequiturs into high romanticism. --James Rotondi

5 out of 5 stars About the Sound and Bonus Disc.......2006-06-07

I wont go in to the virtues of this T.Rex record, there are plenty of other reviews here for that. Suffice to say it is a great record. Instead I will discuss the remastering, and the tracks on the bonus disc, " Rabbit Fighter, The Alternate Slider".

First the sound quality of the remaster by Edsel. I must agree with one of the previous reviewers in that this remaster is certainly LOUD.However for this recording i dont think this is a bad thing entirely, this is a cd which sounds good at higher volumes. I have good equipment, and although the volume is high, distortion is at a minimum.Just remember to lower the volume before you start playing this disc as it is very loud. Separation is good, and the percussion in particular sounds much more open than on other Slider releases I have heard. Well worth a repurchase for the remaster alone if you own an older version of this on cd. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give the Edsel remaster a 7.

The bonus disc is quite good, much better than the bulk of the bottom of the barrel stuff that is popping up left and right from T Rex these days. The first four songs sound pretty much like the original issue Slider versions, minus overdubs. There are then some above average ( for this type of thing) acoustic versions of some songs, the best of which by far is " Main Man" with mostly different lyrics, including a nod to Elton John. The best two tracks IMO are " Buick Mackane" which is a totally different song than the one on the official issue. This song is somewhat difficult to obtain elsewhere, and is excellent. Finally, closing the second disc is a very rocking version of " Sunken Rags", another gem.

This reissue is well worth purchasing for both newcomers to the Bolan sound, and Bolan fanatics alike.

5 out of 5 stars THE MOST EXHILARATING ALBUM EVER! (OR CLOSE TO IT).......2006-05-30

I NEVER SET OUT TO BE A MARC BOLAN FAN, AND HE SLIPPED INTO MY SUBCONSCIOUS COMPLETELY AGAINST MY WILL....well perhaps that's a stretch, nonetheless, THE SLIDER is truly a defining moment in rock history, and nothing will ever take that away from Marc, may he rest in peace. This is the Be-Bop Elf at his peak, and this album is a total, absolute climax to the Nth degree!!!If you are familiar with his earlier material, this is a definite crescendo, and he is reveling in his fame, and believing that he is the greatest ever. The amazing thing is his confidence is rewarded by an album of complete stream of consciousness, nonsensical, whimsical, sexual frenzy-filled songs of utter delight(filled with other-worldly pop hooks to die for)! The actual lyrical content is more simple, than say even Electric Warrior, and earlier works are more wordy, and mystical, yet this is a powerful album. From the onset of 'Metal Guru'(the most perfect pop song ever) which leaves you shell shocked right from the start, then suddenly you are confronted with an utterly surrealistic love song called 'Mystic Lady' which is somewhat akin to 'Cosmic Dancer' (off the warrior album), but somehow sweeter, and though less introspective(that is I think he's talking about someone else!),just as poignant. Next we are refreshed with a basic rocker, accurately called 'Rock On' and a great rocker it is! Continuing on is 'The Slider' which has gotta be the coolest thing I have ever heard, even if I can't understand the basics of kissing a car....'Baby Boomerang' is that girl we all know who walks with her mouth and talks with her boots- fun rock and roll....'Spaceball Ricochet' is utter nonsense, but humbling, and makes sense on some level- great glam-rock tune....'Buick Mackane' is Zepplinesque' and heavvvy!Great riff....next is 'Telegram Sam'-what a gem-reminds me of 'Get it On' but more subtle and confusing....'Rabbit Fighter' is something off of the White Album ala 'Happiness is a warm gun' only the riff is the fattest guitar Marc has ever done to date.....'Baby Strange' is strangely simple and must have taken five minutes to come up with, yet what a hook!!!He pulled that out of nowhere, and one of my favorites! Oh my, finally we get to the best song on this mighty album....namely 'Ballrooms of Mars' Wow- it still blows me away after all these years and lost brain cells.....you've gotta get this album just for that song...anyway, we still have a couple more songs left-'Chariot Choogle' which is so powerful-it will stand the hair on the back of your neck right up!!It sounds like 'Kashmir' by Zeppelin- or should I say that three years later Led Zep would record a song called 'Kashmir" that sounds like 'Chariot Choogle'? Last but not least is the song 'Main Man' which is another nothing song, but it hides within it a weary, sad Bolan -tired with this fame, wishing to be back riding on that unicorn. The song is infective, and a good closer to this great moment in the mind of Marc. Also included in this extended 'Slider' album is 'Cadilac', 'Thunderwing', and 'Lady'. All three of these songs are great, and could have fit on this album nicely- especially 'Thunderwing'. By the way, 'Lady' has the best hook of all I think, and years later didn't a band called Aerosmith record a song that has an eerie resemblance musically to this song called 'Dude looks like a Lady'?I wonder.......one more thing- the second CD called 'Rabbit Fighter' is the BEST alterative take of any album ever!!!! thanks for reading this.

5 out of 5 stars Bolan at the top of his form.......2005-12-07

'The Slider' is my second favorite T. rex album and it might just be number 1 if I keep listening to it, as I have for the last couple days. The excellent producing and hard driving sound makes me wonder how the band managed not to attract the kind of attention Led Zepplin did in the U.S. Bolan's lyrics are strange and effective and have some interesting references hidden away - making the music sound deceptively simple.

5 out of 5 stars a must have for all T REX fans.......2005-08-19

THIS SPECIAL 2 DISC SET IS AWESOME! NOT ONLY DO YOU GET AN ALL TIME CLASSIC WITH "THE SLIDER", YOU ALSO GET "RABBIT FIGHTER" AN ALTERNATE VERSION OF THE SLIDER FEATURING DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF JUST ABOUT EVERY SONG ON THE SLIDER.

4 out of 5 stars Too loud and stop playing with the cover!.......2005-08-04

It really annoys me when I have to give less than 5 stars to the album that helped me through my teenage years because the powers that be at Edsel can't "leave well enough alone".
I bought this cd as soon as it was released in it's single disc format, and then "Tanx" equally quickly because they sounded amazing. To cut a long story short I was burgled and 150 of my treasured cd's were stolen. To my dismay, when I tried to rebuy this album I was told it had been discontinued. This was due to the fact that Edsel were in the process of re re issuing Marc's catalogue in 2 disc Deluxe form.
When they hit the store's I bought The Slider and upon putting it in my cd player and sitting back to once again enjoy the wonderous opening chords of Metal Guru....BANG...my speakers almost blew because it had been mastered at an ear splitting volume! It amazes me that in an age when we nearly all have access to the finest in musical reproduction technology (compared to 1972 musical reproduction technology)record companies still insist on making cd's ridiculously loud thereby preventing the owners of fine hi fi from truly enjoying their equipment. I digress.
My second gripe is the cover. Man, this image would have to be one of the most beautiful, potent images of a period in the 20th Century when the words change and youth were synonymous and T.Rex ruled the Earth. I had made a small(A3) poster of the cover taken from an old lp(vintage 72) and my first single cd looked identical. This one is almost an abomination. It has been enlarged so that the top of the hat is missing and also looks stretched vertically. To prove my point just look at the various versions after you enter a search for The Slider. I have searched far and wide for an Edsel single disc copy but so far, no luck but if you read this and know of a copy email me and I can certainly get $s to amazon for it.
Thanx and good night.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - Underrated Bolan.......2005-01-06

The Slider (1972.) Marc Bolan's seventh album.

Throughout the late sixties, Marc Bolan's proto-glam rock band, Tyrannosaurus Rex, showed some serious potential, but sadly, they failed to ever live up to this potential. However, when Bolan started going more electric than acoustic, and finding his voice, things started looking up. After a few decent albums, Bolan wowed audiences with the absolutely incredible Electric Warrior album, which remains his most popular one. He followed that album up the following year. How does Electric Warrior's follow-up, The Slider, measure up? Read on for my review.

The Slider is one of Marc Bolan's most interesting albums. On this album, Bolan begans sliding (no pun intended) back to the sound he used before the Electric Warrior album. What we have here is an album that is like the Tyrannosaurus Rex releases, but WAY better. The flow on the album is considerably better than those albums, because Bolan has now found his voice, there is more electric guitar this time around, and, of course, there is a lot more diversity in the song structure. There are rockers and slower tracks alike. I really had my doubts about this album, but those doubts were shattered rather quickly. I've noticed a number of people actually say this album is better than Electric Warrior, and while I wouldn't necessarily agree with that, I won't deny that this release is one of Bolan's finest. If you're a fan of his, this album is worth buying.

Marc Bolan's albums are not easy to come by in America, but there's an import solution - the Russian twofer series. This CD series features Bolan's albums as affordable twofers, each disc containing two albums! These are a much better value than American issues, and they're easier to find (if you look online, obviously.) The Russian versions are the best versions to buy, because they're such a good value. Hell, the American music industry could learn a few things from the Russian one (and NO, I'm not a communist.)

The Slider rocks, plain and simple. If you liked Electric Warrior, or you're just a big-time Bolan fan, you shouldn't hesitate to purchase this album. It's just a shame that Bolan would die only a few years after the release of this album, because he had serious musical potential. Final verdict? Buy this album.

4 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...Worthy Follow-Up To ELECTRIC WARRIOR.......2004-11-21

In the UK, T. Rex had nine top ten hits between 1970 and 1973, including four No. 1's. Unfortunately T. Rexmania never really caught on in the U.S. Marc Bolan's lone top 40 hit was "Bang a Gong" from his classic ELECTRIC WARRIOR album in 1972. He was a superstar in the U.K. and little more than a footnote in the U.S., and that's a shame.

Bolan's follow-up to ELECTRIC WARRIOR, was the equally amazing THE SLIDER. The album kicks off with the electric boogie of "Metal Guru" (a U.K. No. 1) and doesn't let go. Other classic T. Rex songs are "Rock On," "The Slider," "Baby Boomarang" and "Telegram Sam" (another U.K. No. 1). This reissue concludes with three bonus tracks recorded during the original sessions for THE SLIDER. Bottom line? If you enjoyed ELECTRIC WARRIOR, you'll want this album as well. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars In Memory Of A Long-Lost T. Rex T-Shirt.......2002-09-26

Let's face it - Marc Bolan's lyrics make about as much sense as a typical episode of "The Power Rangers" (does anyone really know what a "hub cap diamond star halo" is?) - but he sure had a gift for writing big pop hooks and effortlessly casting off crunchy, fuzzy-sounding riffs from his Les Paul. This is as close to perfection as early 70's glam gets, liberally coated with a layer of cosmic fairy dust and boasting crystalline production. Containing no filler, every track on "The Slider" casts a huge shadow over its contemporaries, including - at the risk of bringing the wrath of Bowie fans worldwide on my head - "The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust." Unfortunately, there are a million stories with no happy ending in The Big (Rock) City and Bolan's became one of them when his girlfriend wrapped his mini around a tree about five or six years after this was released. Feh...

4 out of 5 stars Live fast, die young, stay pretty..............2002-09-22

Like so many of the albums I now find myself trawling for, my first copy of The Slider was on good old 12" vinyl. In that original incarnation it only included the first 13 tracks now included on the CD release. "Thunderwing" and "Lady" were, if memory serves me, first aired on the B-side of the "Metal Guru" single, while "Cadillac" (the great single-that-never-was in my opinion) never really seemd to find a home it was happy with. In feel it probably belongs with the sparser-sounding "Zip Gun" than with the lusher "Slider" or "Tanx" production. Purists may argue that "Electric Warrior" is the T.Rex album to own if you're only going to have the one, but it is essentially a transitional album bridging the gap between the earlier Tolkienesque folk period and the Glam that followed and ends up being neither one thing nor t'other. "Slider" lies firmly in the latter period and is as good an example of the strengths and weaknesses of Marc Bolan as writer and performer as you are likely to get. I can think of nobody else in the modern period who has been able to extract such a variety of results from the basic three-chord blues riff. It's a well documented fact that Bolan would have loved to be Elvis, and on the strength of this perhaps he wouldn't have made a bad job of it. It's too easy to treat some of the lyrics harshly, branding them "pretentious" or "unintelligeable", (although if it were early 20th century poetry it would be called "hermetic" and treated with reverence), but that's what Bolan was all about from first to last. T.Rex are probably pretty much of an unknown quantity to most American listeners outside of "Get It on" (with it's title inexplicably censored for transatlantic consumption). Here in Britain for 3 or so all too brief years he was the epitome of a pop star. "Slider" more than any other album illustrates what he was about before succumbing to McCartney's Syndrome and putting the wife on keyboards.

A Sonic Masterpiece. Period. Probably the most exciting album ever made- by Marc Bolan or anybody for that matter. This is the most intense hook-filled plethora of Pop/Rock and Roll/Glam nonsensical, wonderful music and lyrics ever! All I can picture is 'Through the Looking Glass' or 'Alice in Wonderland'(maybe his mad hatter's style hat) driven by the best Les Paul riff-driven 4th generation Rock and Roll you can imagine! This music is as stirring as The Beatles or The Kinks in their prime.
Buy it before you go any longer without.....perhaps try some other T.Rex such as 'Electric Warrior' (another gem)first and get geared up!!

4 out of 5 stars Can't wait for it to be issued as a single disc........2007-07-22

This is a great album which I am looking forward to buying just as soon as it is issued as a single disc at a single disc price. I'm tired of paying twice as much for a 'bonus' disc of out-takes which are only interesting to listen to once (if that). These greedy record companies have no heart. Hold out for the proper release.

5 out of 5 stars TELEGRAM SAM YOUR MY MAIN MAN !!!.......2007-05-30

In 1972,British Glam Rock became a behemoth musical force.Slade,David
Bowie and Sweet had all achieved chart success by 1972 ,but Marc Bolan
and T REX created their own form of Beatlemania in 1972 ."The Slider" album continued the band's string of hit singles ."Telegram Sam" and
"Metal Guru",two "The Slider" songs, became hits on both sides of the
Atlantic Ocean."Born to Boogie",the T REX concert DVD,gives the viewer
a glimpse of "The Slider" tour's T Rexstasy in 1972,but buying any
version of "The Slider" is the best starting point .Spaceball Ricochet,Mystic Lady and the title track are three of the many other gems to be mined from this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Swing With Marc.......2006-06-15

This is a great example of crunchy glam, with understated horns & production. A good place to start for novices. Snappy guitars and sing-along choruses. It bears mentioning that the superb background vocals are by none other than Flo & Eddie (Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman - the singers from the sixties band The Turtles, and early '70's Mothers of Invention). Backing vocals are worth the price of admission.

4 out of 5 stars T. Rex - 'The Slider' (Repertoire).......2005-12-10

Originally released in 1972,looks to be the band's seventh lp.I've seen this disc in almost every retail store I've ever been. Two big hits came off this record,"Metal Guru" and the pop gem "Telegram Sam".Other notable cuts I thought were "Rock On",the memorable "Baby Strange" and "Rabbit Fighter".This CD reissue tags on three bonus tracks.Good British glam rock classsic, but also just fun to listen to.A should-have.

4 out of 5 stars T Rex 's Ultimate Album.......2004-08-15

If you buy one T Rex CD get this one!

This is the height of Marc Bolan's songwriting ability and is one of those albums that flows seamlessly from the first song right through to the last. A perfect example of a classic rock album, it's boogie swagger and post hippie glam metal pop rock shake make it a firm soundtrack for the early seventies. There is so much good boogie pop rock that flows so easily from the fingertips of Mr. Bolan that no one ever really equalled T Rex in this genre of music.
Song highlights: Metal Guru - an anthem for the glam generation, The Slider - the title track and easily one of T Rex's greatest songs, Buick MacKane, Chariot Choogle - two irresistably catchy chug along rockers, Telegram Sam - probably the best known song from the album.
Get this CD you can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely adorable.......1999-12-29

A sweet, simple romantic comedy... remember when musicals used to be that way? This may not be the most brilliant or sophisticated score ever written, and it owes heavily to Fiddler on the Roof, but it is still a delight. Well-produced, with good liner notes for those of us who haven't seen the show, this album is an excellent recording of a show which I suspect will become a small-theater staple for many years. Jennifer Rosin's Carolina is a particular standout, but the entire cast sounds wonderful. Hopefully, we will hear more from the Crystal/Engquist songwriting team.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful and important show to hear and to produce........1999-08-17

This is the first recording of the classic Off-Broadway musical. The show has been one of my favorites since 1984 when I saw the first preview of the original production. The title might suggest an old Yiddish musical. In fact, the show is a modern American musical and a first-rate one at that.

This show and score should have wide appeal. It is a fun show which is simple to produce and requires only a cast of eight. In that sense, it is a small show, but the CD makes clear that it has an artistic weight far greater than some of the current extravaganzas which clutter Broadway.

Raphael Crystal's music is charming, tuneful, and dramatic. Richard Engquist's lyrics, as always, are witty, clever and right on the money.

The story is a comedy classic. In 19th century Russia, a young woman seeks to avoid an arranged marriage by having her true love impersonate the eponymous "mail-order" groom. Complications ensue. The measure of this show is we get to see the drama which underlies the comedy. Kuni-Leml's "What's My Name?" is funny and moving at the same time.

The cast is excellent with a special nod to Danny Gurwin as Kuni-Leml.

I hope hearing this CD will encourage groups of all kinds and backgrounds to produce this delightful and important show. It is delightful - just push "play." It is important because the show is about the never-more-relevant conflict between a narrow and constricted past and an open and growing future.
