Sheesh! For a while there, it sounded like every Podunk guitarist half-wit and his tractor-driving brother were intent on aping Seattle sludgemeisters Pearl Jam. Even the English were nicking PJ licks (try as we might, can we truly forget Bush?). Orlando, Florida's Seven Mary Three--guilty as Vedder-voiced charged--seem to have gotten the cease-and-desist message. Their third outing finds frontman Jason Ross skewing off on several nongrunge tangents. Even his singing has grown more emotive and enunciated, moving away from the mawkish Vedder-ish murmur found on the early hit "Cumbersome." Tellingly, every time the grunge ghost surfaces here ("Peel," "Hang On"), the song sinks out of sight. But each time Ross and company test their aesthetic limits (the soulful "Chasing You," the Skynyrd-styled "Joliet," the alterna-peppy "Super-Related"), SM3's stock spirals up, up, up. Which clarifies the whole point of influences anyway: you're supposed to glean what you can from them and move on. Seven Mary Three seem to have learned that lesson. --Tom Lanham --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased!!.......2006-08-23

This album is just what I expected and hoped it would be...another smash hit.

4 out of 5 stars no better than this.......2005-06-10

This is the best CD the band has done so far (2005). Period.

4 out of 5 stars Florida Band Keeps Growing.......2004-04-16

After dropping anything that resembles Pearl Jam on their sophomore effort "Rock Crown" Seven Mary Three cranks up the tempo and distortion a bit on "Orange Ave." Jason Ross's vocals are more restrained in this record than the hit album "American Standard" and guitarist Jason Pollock proves he can lay down some real lead work on his final record with the band.

"Orange Ave." features the best three-song stretch of any 7M3 record to this point. "Over Your Shoulder" is the best song Ross and company have written, "Chasing You" is a solid mid-tempo track, and "Each Little Mystery" is a unique radio-ready ballad that unfortunately never caught on. Ross's voice is outstanding on the slow paced "Southwestern State" and Ross and Pollack show how far they have come as guitar players and musicians on "Joliet". "Flagship Eleanor" is also and overlooked gem.

You're never going to hear "American Standard" from 7M3 again and that's a good thing because they are so much better than that.

4 out of 5 stars 7 Mary 3 Orange Ave........2001-09-10

This is a great album. If you are into this kind of music, get it. This is a great band really, not sold out to the world. They stay true to music. They have their own sound and if they keep it they could be huge.

4 out of 5 stars Why is this band not played more?.......2001-04-03

This album has an outstanding mix of styles and shows where this band can go when allowed to perform the way THEY want. Rock Crown, while good, was IMO, unfinished. It left something to be desired, both with many of the individual tracks and as an album. Orange Avenue, on the other hand, brought 7M3 back up to the level of their first offering, American Standard.

On A.S., the band was making the most of the grunge sound ("Cumbersome", "My My"), but not without displaying their individuality on songs like "Margaret" and "Roderigo". On O.A., they seem to have left most of the grunge sound in the past, but retained enough to keep this album rocking with songs like "Peel", "Hang On" and "Over Your Shoulder". Where 7M3 really shines on this album, though, is when they tone it down a little with tracks like "Joliet" and my personal favorite, "Each Little Mystery". With the exception of "In Between" (Ross' attempt at rapping leaves much to be desired, and the yelling by the band leading into the chorus is worse), every song on O.A. is excellent. Even the hidden track, "(Don't Let Me) Talk to You Like That", is a keeper.

Will this album turn into a classic, destined to be in everyone's collection? Doubtful. But it SHOULD be.

A Fritz Kreisler recording can always be recognized by the violinist's beefy, baritonal sonority, inimitable portamento, and communicative warmth. Most of the repertoire here consists of the short, encore pieces that prevailed in the era of 78rpm records, many penned or arranged by Kreisler, who was always on the lookout for memorable tunes. Familiar classics like the duets with John McCormack, and Schubert, Beethoven, and Grieg sonata collaborations with Rachmaninoff turn up alongside rare alternate takes and Kreisler's lone recording as a piano soloist in Dvořak's Humoresque. One should savor these musical sweetmeats in small portions, rather than wolfing down each disc in chronological gulps. Ward Marston's transfers are beyond praise. -- Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars Kind of Amazing.......2005-12-08

First thing I be wondering is where RCA (BMG--now probably Wal-Mart) got the idea that a $120 set of Kreisler faves--most short 78-era items--would be marketable? I'd love to check the Homeland Security records and see just who bought this set. I would never have sprung for it but now that I was given one I have to comment on it. Amazing!

First, there's the playing. This is a professionally ebullient fiddler. Technically astounding, but with the communicative warmth the other reviewers seem to uniformly note. I find violin tiring to the ear sometimes, but not this guy's violin. A joy to listen to.

Second, the selection. Fairly much 11 discs of solid "pop" music--a kind of Fiedlerian dream world where every piece catches the attention usually because of potent melodic pungency. I found myself looking forward to each cut, knowing I would be well-rewarded. Kreisler chose his repertoire well.

Third, oh yeah sure, nostalgia. Everything here is an echo of a world that passed largely by 1914 and was already deep nostalgia for many by the time these last recordings were made in the 1940s. I'm not sure there's anything wrong with that, it's a kind of longing not for an idealized past but for aspects of that past that are clearly missing in the world today (or even back in 1948 when the last tracks were set down). Heck, I listen to Beethoven and find myself getting nostalgic for an era when my local department store music department would make a big deal out of a new Bernstein release and a major network would actually give Lennie time to talk about classical music to the masses.

Anyway, I never intended to own the collection, now I do and I'd replace it in the blink of an eye. Charming and entertaining from disc one to disc eleven.

5 out of 5 stars Almost painfully beautiful music/playing.......2005-05-08

It is one of the real advatages of modern life that we can still hear and be moved by artists from the early 20th century. As listners, there are probably psychological factors that predispose us to be touched by the original rather than someone imitating a style from the past. Part of the psychological impact for me is the nostalgia element and connections this music has to memories of my ancestors who where alive when this music was being played and recorded. But beyond the listener's psychological factor(s) the artists from the early 20th century had a completely different set of musical and non-musical experiences from our contempory artists. A contemporary artist trying to duplicate the style from another era often sounds false and affected. Regardless, ultimately performances have to stand on their own musical merit. These most definately do.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Ravishing!.......2001-03-24

Ever since he first toured The U.S as a child in 1888 with pianist Moritz Rosenthal Fritz Kreisler's musical talents have left us spellbound. His playing combines a searching intelligence with intense and delightful musicality, his mellow honey-like tone appeals to the heartstrings, and awakens enthusiasm in his listeners. He was a great violinist who at the same time could touch and charm his audience. I highly reccomend this set to all lovers of the violin!

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Incredible!.......1999-12-10

I would give this set a 10 stars, if I were allowed to. Kreisler has been my favorite violinist as far as I can remember, and have never gotten tired of his playing (and never will be either!) His playing has deceptive ease and elegance that makes people forget how phenominal his technique was(just listen to his crystalline trills and amazing articulation of fast runs). And even at his sweetest moments, his performance always had strong backbone and never sank into tasteless sentimentality. Kreisler's playing was really one of the kind and anyone who loves violin should listen to his recordings. I cannot recommend this set highly enough! The CD transfer is excellent.
