Already tagged with the unfortunate critical label of "southern-fried Strokes," the full-length debut by the brothers Followill (Nathan, Jared, Caleb) and cousin (Matthew Followill) may well have its roots in their itinerant evangelist father Leon blasting his sons with relentless doses of `70s rock as they traveled the South from one preaching gig to the next. But the way the Kings channel sources as disparate as Led Zeppelin's "That's the Way" into "Joe's Head" or the Who's "Circles" into their ""Molly's Chambers" seems almost subconscious; after a decade of bands trying to reinvent the rock wheel, it's refreshing to hear one content to gleefully pry it loose and send it spinning in their own peculiar directions. As with all the great ones, deconstructing the Kings' sound doesn't get you far: singer/guitarist Caleb perpetually seems to be rolling one too many syllables off a lazy, Southern tongue while his haystack-haired brothers and cousin chug maniacally along like some lost, recently re-tooled '60s garage-psych-rock legend. In the end there's not an ounce of the Strokes' latent pop culture self-consciousness in the Kings' intoxicating sonic haze--just the restless, often bittersweet noise of one of the most original bands to hail from Dixie since R.E.M. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars its kings of leon.......2007-05-17

do i really need to say anything more? One of my fav disks by one of my fav bands.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY SUBLIME (not the band, the definition).......2007-01-22

New different sound that picks up some great influences - Strokes meet the Velvet Underground meets the "I don't give a @#$% what you think of my music" creativity of Jeff Buckley.

These guys are an open channel and both albums are must haves. Listen over and over - you'll get it.

If you don't understand this band or Caleb's phrasing - you were probably one of the people who thought Jeff Buckley's Grace album was crap.

This is the band to watch for the next decade. Enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars OK if Your Like it Basic.......2006-12-12

Very basic rock and roll. I get the impression that these guys barely know how to play their instruments, and their singing is not particularly "schooled" either.

If you're looking for some simple rock, with a touch of folk here and there, this might be for you. Sort of Bob Dylan meets The Strokes.

Some of the tunes are quite engaging. But on the whole, it all seems sort of trite.

5 out of 5 stars hallelujah the 3 minute high energy song is back!!.......2006-11-07

i found this cd to be one of my all time favorites! high energy, sexy lyrics, growly vocals. you don't get much better than that in rock and roll. then there's that amazing "dusty", true to form swamp blues, one of my favorites. anyone looking for a true rock and roll sound will not be disappointed by this cd!!

5 out of 5 stars Still Fresh.......2006-06-17

3 years later, and this album still sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it. Garage rock with a southern twist. It took a few listens to really grow on me, but sometimes the best ones do. In todays music, there's not many albums that have a lot of "staying power", but this one does. It might be a familiar sound to some, but at the same time you'll know that you've never heard anything quite like it before. And it was definitely a treat to see them a few times last year, open for U2.
You know you're on your way up, when Bono calls...

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Release.......2005-06-02

Because you either adore or detest the Kings of Leon, and because the band has not only made it but is obviously going to be a major voice in rock, I see no point in the host of reviews that are either cheerleading or dissing them. I've not seen a band generate so much love/hate since the Stones broke in way back in 1964 (and I'm old enough to remember that very clearly).

Personally, I'm convinced KOL will be one of the greatest bands ever (and I can count the number of bands I've said that about over the last 40 years on one hand)....and yes, I've seen them live more than once.

For those of you who don't want to miss a moment of the bliss as it arrives, here is a comprehensive list of what KOL has released. Here is a key to the notations so you won't miss any of their releases:

5 out of 5 stars the real youth & young manhood........2003-08-03

Kings of Leon - Good old southern boy's from the home of porn - a delightful deluge of cross dressing, easy women and yarns from the murky subculture of their transient youth. So the obvious question in this day and age to ask is who are they ripping off? Lynard Skynard? Yes a little. Credence Clearwater? Yes a touch here and there, there's also a touch of the Velvet underground in the subject matter but they swagger with an exuberance and an effervescence that makes this a refreshing and vital recording. I can sense the sniggers, the chuckle as you point out the obvious clichéd reference points. But that just goes to prove even further what a triumph this debut album is, so here comes another cliché 'better to have people talking about you (good or bad) than not talking about you at all, ahhhhhh, yes, the kings are in the spotlight, they are again being lauded by the fickle music press you say and next month it'll be the hiss, or the rapture, or some other band named after a forgotten part of the human anatomy. Yes, a highly likely assessment but forget all that and just listen to the music. I then challenge you not to break out in an all over, foot stomping smile, that has you coming back for more and more of the same. In all their seedy glorious moment the Kings of Leon are just trying to get out, and get on, don't deny them their story. Those who thought American youth was all about sports jackets, candy floss, cheese burgers, red convertibles, Budweiser, coca-cola, Florida, Venice beach, surfing, Molly Ringwald, the Yankees, Joe Montana, cheer leaders and thickshakes - well think again. Like a David Lynch movie these guy's allow you to take a peek behind the glossy post cards and cheap 'college style' movies to a much different world populated by perverts, paedophile priests and drunken louts. It won't be to everyone's liking but hey, by the bands own admission 'we just tell it how it is'.

Take opening track 'Red morning light' it sets the scene and provides the tempo for what is about to follow "hey hey another dirty bird giving out a taste" sings Caleb. Then there's 'Joe's Head' where the protagonist murders the guy who's shagging his wife. Then murders his wife. Then has a fag afterwards to celebrate. 'Happy Alone' where you'll find Caleb at the local whorehouse "prancing around in my high heels/And your cherry red lipstick". Then there's the sleazy 'tranny' - it involves Caleb doing coke, "cheap trick hookers" and being "tied to a chair" - but then how could any song titled simply 'tranny' be anything other than brilliant - it's also the greatest song about cross-dressing since Lou Reed sung 'Take a walk on the wild side'.

It's been a while since such a remarkably fresh and unconscious album was released on the general public in such an unassuming way. 'Youth and Young manhood' is quite an achievment. It is one of the debut album since 'definitley maybe' and is odds on for album of the year. Ignore the hype that surronds them and enjoy the moment - they are, in the immortal words of Noel Gallagher "My new favourite f*****g band".

5 out of 5 stars The old is new again.......2003-07-31

Rock music has taken a turn for the worst in the past 10 years and there are not many bands that really get the rocker in me too excited.

This album however, is FANTASTIC! It's so nice to see a band that plays music that comes straight from the hip. With bluesy hooks and tons of thinly vieled sexual references this album screams of the good old days when rock'n'roll meant something and expressed our deepest desires. If you secretly think that "The Joker" by Steve Miller Band is one of the top rocks songs of all time, this record will blow you away. If you like your rock straight up and unrefined (no ice please), hold on to your hat when you pick up this album!

5 out of 5 stars Can't stop playing it!.......2003-07-22

After spending 4 weeks in england, i got a taste of what england was really into, and kings of leon were one of these bands. i heard about their performance at glastonbury, so when i was at t in the park, i had to go and see them...and im glad i did...because these guys simply rocked. i went out and bought the cd, and now that im back in the states, i keep playing the cd over and over....i cant stop because its soooo good. i am disappointed that the us version will have another song on it...but hey...i got the cd before everyone else, so oh well. buy this album!

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at a tortured genius.......2002-08-21

Naxos continues to do a wonderful job with its "Life and Works" series. Quite some time ago, we had a Life/Works of Mozart, one of Chopin and then two more, Liszt and Beethoven. he latter are even better packaged than are the earlier sets, with a thick booklet that offers us essays on the historical background, the position of the composer in his time, a look at the major works, a listening plan, recommended readings, personalities, a calendar of the artist's life, a glossary, and a discography. This booklet is worth the price of the set alone.

Now we have two more entries in this amazing series, again written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann: "Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky" (8.558036-39) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 5 min. and "Johann Sebastian Bach" (8.558051-54) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 34 minutes. (Please see my comments on the Bach set on its webpage.)

Was there ever a sadder composer than Tchaikovsky? Siepmann practically introduces us to the child in his cradle and covers his 53 or so years of torment over his music, his sexuality, his impossibly hopeless marriage his strange relationship with Mme von Meck, and above all his music.

To make the recording more vivid, the producers have assigned professional actors the roles of the composer himself (Malcolm Sinclair), the women in his life (Karen Archer and Teresa Gallagher) and the men (Stephen Thorne and David Timson). There are many music examples (drawn, of course, from Naxos recordings), some of them considerably longer than necessary. For example, the "Sugar Plum Fairy" is heard at length to represent all of the "Nutcracker" score when several shorter samplings would have served the purpose better. But this has been true for the entire series, and perhaps the producers will rethink this aspect.

5 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary User-Friendly Multimedia Dvorák Biography.......2004-04-28

I have followed with interest the series of CDs explaining popular operas by Jeremy Siepmann, an American musicologist long resident in Britain. Each of those is a single CD with a spoken text interspersed with longish excerpts from the opera in question. This 4-CD set, though, is something else again. It is a combination of music/audio CDs with superimposed CD-ROM material (on the same discs). One plays the audio portion on your regular stereo equipment. When put in your PC or Mac CD drive, the CD-ROM portion of the discs brings up an extensive set of hyperlinked text materials as well as links to the CDs from which the musical examples are taken (all from the Naxos music recordings library, of course). Also included in the CD-ROM material is the full text of Siepmann's detailed biography of Dvorák. There is also a thick booklet that includes cast lists (various actors playing various important people in Dvorák's life), an extensive essay about the sociopolitical and cultural conditions extant during Dvorák's life, an longish essay about his major works and their significance, a graded listening plan, an article outlining recommended reading, biographical snippets about each of the important people in Dvorák's life, a chronological calendar of Dvorák's life, and an extensive glossary of musical and other pertinent terms.

Siepmann's four-and-a-half-hour exploration of Dvorák's life and works is in his wonted polished, often witty, prose. It is read gracefully by Siepmann himself. Dvorák is played by the suave-voiced British actor, Sean Barrett. The musical examples are extensive, often including complete movements, arias, etc., and are placed expertly within the flow of the text. Production values for this budget-priced set are quite high.

I will admit that I had a particular interest in this production as I grew up in a rural Oklahoma town settled by Bohemians (Czechs) and came to love some of Dvorák's music before even that of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. I've already recommended this set to the public schools and town library in my hometown.

I am not quite sure who the intended audience for this set is. Presumably there are those, like me, who are insatiable when it comes to increasing their knowledge of classical music, its composers and their sociocultural milieu. One also imagines that even in these days of decreasing support for music and music appreciation courses in our schools, there are teachers who could make wonderful use of this material for their students. Whoever the audience is, I cannot imagine a listener coming away from this set without a great deal more information and appreciation for the genius of Antonin Dvorák.

Recommended.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Bonus Track Was Unnecesary.......2002-02-03

The three main themes from "Cinema Paradiso", composed by Ennio and Andrea Morricone are fabulous and extremely touching. I really love them. However, they are repeated throughout this CD, with the sole exception of 'While Thinking About Her Again', 'Cinema On Fire', and 'Four Interludes'.

The main title is best represented on 'Cinema Paradiso' (track 1). 'Love Theme For Nata' is a fantastic nod for the love theme. And the theme for the child Toto is the one that I praise the most, and it's heard on 'Childhood And Manhood', even though it's repeated on 'First Youth'. And I have to say that the bonus track on this CD, which is a version of the theme played by the string section of the orchestra, was definitely unnecessary because it's a repetition of track 1.

It's a shame that such a marvelous work from Ennio Morricone gets lost in so many repetitions. One thing that makes this CD attractive though, as opposed to the original release, is that the sound is better recorded.

3 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack, Disappointed CD.......2001-08-06

It's a shame that, after all these years, they re-released this wonderful soundtrack CD without correcting an annoying problem found on the original release. I'm talking about the "electronic noise" (???) that can be heard on the track "Love Theme". About one-third of the way into that song, if you pay attention, you will hear the "scratching" sound for about a second or two. This really destroys that song. Everytime I listen to that track, as soon as I'm starting to really get into it, my mind keeps anticipating that annoying sound, which in turn, makes it a very unpleasant listening experience. The only difference between this release and the original (1989/1990) release is that this latest release has an extra track (string version of "Cinema Paradiso"). However, this extra track isn't better than the original performance/recording of the song (Track 1). Therefore, if you already own the original release, you don't gain anything by buying this latest release. The reason that I gave this CD three stars is because of the problem with the song "Love Theme" as mentioned above. There really are only three great tracks (songs) on this soundtrack CD: "Cinema Paradiso", "Love Theme" and "First Youth". If you take away the enjoyment of listening to one of these three great songs, it leaves only two for you to enjoy.
