As authentic as the lines on his forehead and his droopy eyes, veteran bluesman Charlie Musselwhite gets better with age. (At 62, he's a respected survivor with dozens of albums to his credit.) On Delta Hardware the journeyman musician pays tribute to, and revels in, his Mississippi roots. Although he's spent time in Chicago and on the West Coast, for this album of churning swamp and deep Southern blues he taps his formative years in the town of Kosciusko. Musselwhite's poignant voice and crying harmonica convey loss and sadness on the tense, swirling "Black Water," one of two tracks dealing with Hurricane Katrina. His full-bodied, amplified harp cuts like Paul Butterfield and especially Little Walter, two of whose songs he covers here. Give Musselwhite's backing group credit too, especially guitarist Chris "Kid" Anderson, who slices into the slow, riff-based, Walter-penned "Just a Feeling" with Ronnie Earl-styled precision. Even on the straight-ahead shuffle of "Blues for Yesterday," the band nails a sweaty, edgy groove that's as genuine as it is driving. Producer Chris Goldsmith keeps the sound lean, mean, and just muddy enough to conjure images of the band churning out these dark, dusky Delta blues on a porch in the midst of a sweltering summer's night. The no-frills approach is perfect for Musselwhite's otherworldly harp playing to express his years and miles on the endless blues highway. --Hal Horowitz

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing.......2007-05-07

I bought this based on the enthusiastic Amazon reviews and the fact that I like blues rock. This is my first Charlie Musselwhite and I was a bit disappointed. His vocals are laconic and the guitar is rarely gripping. The opening song has a good hook, but the rest is pretty forgettable. If you like blues harp, I'd recommend Kim Wilson's solo efforts over this. Still, it's a solid listenable album, and they may be more vivid in concert.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-01-24

This is one for Blues Harp lovers! Great old school blues mixed with some modern style. I've heard Musselwhite play on a Blind Boys of Alabama CD and absolutely loved his style. This collection is different and yet equally as awesome... moreso if you consider the sheer volume of great harpin'. C.M. is a virtuoso of the harp. Buy this for the pure enjoyment of hearing what amazing sounds can be blown through a simple harmonica.

5 out of 5 stars One of the harp greats!!!.......2007-01-19

Charlie Musselwhite is supposed to have said, that he only knows one song, he just plays it slower or faster or in a different key. Well if that's the case he disguises it well and has managed to release over twenty albums of this song. This latest release is right up there with the best of them. This is no nonsense, no frills earthy blues, from the driving Church is Out and Blues for Yesterday, to the dark sounding Black Water. Buy this CD and just listen to that harp cry! It's a great driving album, but the problem is, there are only ten songs most of them two or three minutes long, so its finished before I get home. Ok just stick it on again!!!

5 out of 5 stars harmonica at it's best.......2007-01-13

There are and have been a few great harmonica players. But I am always amazed what a great player musically and technically Charlie Musselwhite is. And I love the way he and his band sounds. The CD rocks and so do the lyrics of Black Water (title 4). Hello America, get ready for more...

4 out of 5 stars church is out! Yeeha.......2007-01-10

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2005-09-24

A great release from an under appreciated band. Winning Man stands out as the best track.....very pleased with this effort from the band.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Early 80's Metal!.......2004-09-01

Hardware is Krokus' best album. Released in 1981, it was the album that broke Krokus in North America. Their earlier efforts, Pay It in Metal, and Metal Rendez-Vous were very rough around the edges. (Although Rendez-Vous did contain some very catchy tunes.) Hardware contained semi-hit single, Burning Bones. It received considerable airplay on CHOM-FM in Montreal, at least....

Many people thought this was AC/DC when they first heard it. The sound is very similar to Bon Scott-era AC/DC, including the vocals of Marc Storace, who was the son of an opera singer, and possessed a vocal range of several octaves. Most of the album is fairly uptempo. She's Got Everything picks up after opening track Burning Bones, and then leads into a very strong, mid tempo tune, Winning Man. Oddly enough, Krokus would re-record Winning Man on their 1987 release, Heart Attack- and not for the better. Mainly what made the songs on Hardware so good, was the slightly less commercial feel they had, in contrast to later Krokus albums. There are fun moments, such as side 1 closer, Smelly Nelly, and the very un-subtle Mr. Sixty-Nine. The rest of side 2 (again my vinyl years) has good hard rockers: Easy Rocker, Rock City and Mad Racket. All three are solid. The album ends with Celebration. An odd song which starts slowly with a lone guitar, foot-stomp drum sounds, and Storace's superb vocal work. It eventually explodes into full hard rock and ends with a chorus repeated over and over for a couple of minutes. Sound boring? No way! I defy you to listen to this song and not have it going through your head all day. This album had the classic Krokus lineup, with Storace, Fernando Von Arb (guitar), Chris Von Rohr (bass), Tommy Keifer (guitar)and Freddy Steady (drums)- And Freddy Steady has the greatest drummer name in rock history! How can you go wrong here? Buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Traditional heavy metal.......2003-02-03

In my opinion this is Krokus very best album. The songs on "Hardware" are over all strong, especially "Easy rocker", "She's got everything" and "Rock city" that is similar to AC/DC's "Overdose". The vocals are in fact also very Bon Scott-like. At this time Krokus had a more raw sound, but became more polished a few years later. This album should be a real treat to any fan of traditional heavy metal á la Accept, Saxon, Iron Maiden among others.

4 out of 5 stars Old-school rock'n'roll+solid hardware!.......2000-03-18

Initially released by Ariola in 1981,this gem of an album features caustic guitar riffs, monster grooves a la Bon Scott, and even a little Scorpions melodicity thrown in for good measure. The Maltese-born Marc Storace did a great job behind the mic and complimenting very well Fernando von Arb's mean guitar work.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......1999-12-08

An awesome hard rock album. "She's Got Everything" is possibly their best song ever, its guitar solos are as good as Malmsteen or Hendrix!

1 out of 5 stars Disillusioned.......2005-10-09

After listening to the beautifully spiritual "How did you find me here," I hoped for more along those lines, but this loud and annoying effort gave me the feeling he was spitting on that wholesomeness. Maybe he changed or was jaded by success, but this almost ruined his earlier stuff for me.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful as heck........2005-07-18

This is one of my favorite albums. Some of David Wilcox's other releases are saccharine for my taste. but East Ashville retains an edge that makes this effort standout. I heartedly recommend this collection of smart, funny and beautifully performed songs. For my money it's one of the best contemporary folk albums out there.

If you are looking for music that is wholesome, pure, and filled with only sweetness and light.... this is still an outstanding release, but you may be happier with one of his other material.

5 out of 5 stars Don't spend $30 plus for this!.......2005-04-18

You can now get this CD in it's entirety at the iTunes music store and probably elsewhere online. Sure, you don't get all the original art, but if you're buying the CD to look at the pictures you're kinda missing out. Plus, if you really are offended by the stuff that's mentioned in these reviews, you can download the stuff you like and don't pay for what you don't want.

This is a great CD and the song "East Asheville Hardware" is amazing. It's a song about a hardware store that almost makes me cry!

5 out of 5 stars Get a grip!.......2005-03-31

This album is supposed to be funny and it is! I can't believe that some folks are so thinned skinned that this album could offend. It's only offensive if you're over 70, or a puritan. It also happens to be one of the best albums I've ever heard. East Ashville Hardware alone is worth the price of this album. This album was my first exposure to David Wilcox and it made me an instant fan. A GREAT album. His songs have a modern day Jim Croce, as a solo act.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-09-15

I'm a die hard fan, I love David as an entertainer and have most of his cd's. I usually find a few favorite selections, but enjoy the whole album. Not so here. There are some jewels ( such as Carpenter Story and For Real) and some junk (Mango Story/song, Barbie). The first song "Blow 'em Away" about the frustration/violent fantasies of a rush hour commuter(yes, we identify) was funny back when David recorded this album, but with today's sensibilities would be considered in poor taste.

David has enormous talent and a worthy message. He can get away with being wry, as in Boob Job. His album "How Did You Find Me Here" is stellar. This album I'll probably listen to when I can sit near the "skip" button.

4 out of 5 stars Movie Sucks. Soundtrack Rocks.......2005-08-04

Hardware, the movie, was good potential shot down the drain with a script that went from intruiging to lousy right before my eyes. At least that's my opnion. However the soundtrack is a different story. Simon Boswell comes up with some really moody music in this movie and the soundtrack captures the best of that along with some other music that appeared in the movie.

Boswell's contributions go from moody guitar tunes reminiscent of the old west to mega sweeping ambient synth music to really tripped out opera music. Boswell runs the gamut. Some of the tracks are more sound bites from various notable bits in the movie like the Reno's Reindeer Steaks commercial and Iggy Pop's radio announcement. Other tracks are definitely like background music to what was seen on the screen. While I won't say I like every track I admire the work overall.

You also get a couple tunes from the goth/punk scene like Ministry's Stigmata (very hard core) and Public Image Limited's The Order of Death. PIL's song is what got me wanting this Cd in the first place. Very brooding and appropriate.

The CD is very hard to find. I'll admit that. I was one of the lucky ones I suppose when I got it soon after the movie was released. If you do find this CD at a reasonable price and like avantgarde industrial music then I recommend going for it.

5 out of 5 stars Music Makes or Breaks Movies.......2005-02-08

Some movies that would be mediocre become classics or works of art because of the inspiration of great musicians. This movie is good, but what made it stand apart from many low budget Sci-Fi movies is the music. Some of the best edgy tunes you could put together. I like all types of music so when this movie came out I immediately bought the VHS and cassette. I'm sorry to see both the movie and soundtrack is hard to come by because they are both out of print. We can only hope they put it on DVD and re-release the CD soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars Beethoven dropping acid with Jimi Hendrix!.......2001-08-07

This soundtrack takes an average film and turns it into watchable art (almost!). Were it not for the dodgy killah-robot, it could be a really nice piece of cyberpunk cinema. With a few more character monologues and a storyline that covered something a bit more existential, this could have been a great movie. Thankfully we have the soundtrack to evoke some of the better images and a nice - unobtrusive - mixing of samples from the film. Out of nearly 25 tracks there is only one dodgy one, which spookily enough is the 'ATTACK OF THE KILLAH-ROBOT'. Its not called that, but you know the type, lots of crashing discordant keyboard chords while a deranged midget hammers scrap metal in the background! The rest of the album is pure poetry though. If you like your 'light' in hues of sodium yellow, and your air to taste of industrial effluent, then HARDWARE by Simon Boswell is the soundtrack for you. Remeber... the future is disposable.

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack, so-so movie........2000-02-04

This soundtrack is a real standout for the time period it was recorded in. The music is outstanding, doesn't follow any particular form and is a blend of high-tech and slide guitar. Various effects. Excellent listening. You'll be surprised, try it!

5 out of 5 stars great movie (with an even better soundtrack).......1999-12-03

the PIL song on this and the bits with Iggy Pop are what make this albumn fun at the club. but for a scary soundtrack(with/without visuals this cd is hard to top..(such a feeling of remorse/decay permeates this whole disc.

5 out of 5 stars BOOTY, HARD-TRANCEY, ACID, TECHNO FUSION !!!!!!!!.......2000-09-26

DJ Hardware was the first Dj I saw live when I moved from Europe to Florida. It was one of the most powerful sets i had seen in a while. His CD's are all very good no matter if breaks or "trance". Don't expect trance America knows today. It is not that cheesy 1999 Trancewave stuff. It sounds (for me) like music I heard in the mid 90's in Western European clubs. A faster harder very pumping Acid like Techno Trance. Hardware definetely loves Acid lines throuhout all his mixes. The good old 303 tweek, birdy sound will be there almost continously. His mixing skills are sure great and he has proven that various times. If you like George Acosta style south beach Trance keep you fingers off this one. Also if you are a friend of REAL TRANCE (my favorite) this one is not necessarily recommended. Everyone else you likes Hard Trance or not to crazy booty, not too hard Acid Techno or any kind of fast clubby sound should get this LP and the Mindcontroller by Hardware. Straight forward old European Club Sound. Fans of DJ Micro should like this one as well. SHARPMAKS

5 out of 5 stars The best ever version.......2002-06-07

The wonderful cast transports you to the realms of Gilbert and Sullivan, to make you feel that you are experiencing a first night in 1881! John Reed, as Bunthorne, an aesthetic poet is superb, camp, subversive and a complete fraud. If anyone is not aware, the story of the opera is based upon the idiosyncracies of the Aesthetic movement in England of the 1880's and Gilbert used the public parodies of his friend Oscar Wilde as his major source. The rest of the cast, chorus and orchestra , under the long experienced 'Goddie' are superlative and make for one of the finest line-ups in D'Oyly Carte history. Revel and enjoy, for this is quite the best.

5 out of 5 stars The Golden Cast of D'Oyly Carte!.......1999-04-13

My wish had always been to see John Reed and the D'Oyly Carte Company in a performance of Patience. My mother had done so, remarking that, 'You'd need patience to watch it', she was coloured in her opinion, since she wanted to see 'The Mikado', but had gotten the wrong tickets! The recording, made in 1961, is superb in every detail. You are with the cast, on stage, in the auditorium, it is such a 'live' performance. The dialogue is delivered exquisitely, whilst the singing is uniformerly of the highest standard. I recently portrayed 'Bunthorne' and throughout my performances, I felt that I was continuing the legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan. All the past history of performers were there. I feel that Patience is a magical Savoy Opera. Do not miss the opportunity to own such a definitive performance. Maybe the subject of the 'Art Nouveau' periodof Victorian England is dated, but as one critic has already stated, every generation 'throws up' its poseures, to be knocked. 'Ah, me! lack aday!' BUY IT!

4 out of 5 stars The Definitive Recording.......1998-12-09

For those who prefer the traditional Savoyard renderings of the G&S canon, this is far and away the best recording of this parody of the cult of celebrity. John Reed leads the cast as a delightful Bunthorne, and the recording contains all of the opera's dialogue. "HMS Pinafore," "The Mikado," and "The Pirates of Penzance" may be better known, but "Patience" is deserving of a wider audience.

      5 out of 5 stars Astounding.......2005-10-25

Rare Silk is an astounding jazz ensemble with arrangements as difficult as Gene Puerling's, and a sound to match Puerling's "Singer's Unlimited." This group is amazing.

4 out of 5 stars 8 songs listeed here: Sort of like Manhattan Transfer........2005-05-15

Vocal Jazz reminiscant of Manhattan Transfer, in my opinion. A little Brazilian vibe is mixed in for good measure

      Here are the songs:
1- OOOPS! (No "I Did It Again", does not follow!!!)
      2- Watch What Happens
      3- 'Round Midnight
      4- Hello
      5- American Eyes
      6- Storm
      7- Up From The Skies
      8- Burn It

Bought this at the used cd store...As evidenced on the tracks of this cd. dj hardware doesn't only spin awesome breakbeat set, he's a bad prog-house dj as well...pray for a re-issue, house fans...
