Amazon.com's Best of 1999

Cool but not chilly at all, Everything but the Girl's Temperamental is the sound of the sweetest melancholy. Tracey Thorn's lyrics and vocals here are among her most affecting, tracing patterns of loss, loneliness, and a slightly unsettled happiness. This electronic pop makes for the perfect winter sound, as warm and bracing as a sip of cognac. --Rickey Wright

Amazon.com

Temperamental is ample evidence of Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn's continuing evolution from an acoustic-guitar-based pair of comfortably suburban love griots to acoustically accomplished soundscape explorers who still have a weakness for a pleading melody. After Todd Terry's remix of "Missing" (from Amplified Heart) revitalized the duo, Watt took the opportunity to open their sound up to the clubs, all the while managing to retain the sense of warmth against which so much anonymously ironic dance music actively rebels. In doing so, Watt managed to create a bed of music that mirrors and complements Thorn's impossibly expressive, flat vocals. Though it carries EBTG's sound farther away from their deep roots, a good half of the songs on Temperamental still sound right at home next to their earlier acoustic work ("Hatfield 1980," "Low Tide of the Night," and "Lullaby of Clubland," which straddles the gap)--and those that don't ("Blame," the instrumental "Compression") are more than enjoyable on their own terms. --Randy Silver

5 out of 5 stars If It Wasn't For The Movie Hitch.......2007-06-08

I discovered a gem of CD! I love the movie Hitch and the scene where Eva Mendes and Will Smith are in a ultra cool lounge; a song was playing in the background called "Five Fanthoms" by this group. It would always play in my head after seeing the scene... I looked for the song on the soundtrack to no avail but after doing a little research I found EverythingButTheGirl was responsible for the awesome song. This CD is pleasantly good and a great one to play for lounging or chillin' out with friends, etc! Highly recommend! Don't pass this one... CD plays from start to finish... no index finger needed!

5 out of 5 stars Late night drives.......2007-03-16

I bought this cd by accident but im glad i made that "mistake". As the lyrics of the first song explain, this cd like walking through a city in quiet contemplation on a cloudy maybe drizzly day. Track 4 describes jersey perfectly (well only the bad parts), mood and all, dont know where hatfield is though. This cd has a beautiful meloncholly to it, not the right music for a bright sunny day in the middle of summer but life isnt always like that.

4 out of 5 stars One you have to get into your head.......2007-01-16

If you are a fan of EBTG's early stuff this isn't for you. Tracy Thorn's silky vocals are still apparent, but the band by 1999 were heavily into Drum and Bass (probably due to their ongoing involvement with Massive Attack).

Some tracks are repetitivie, but these make ideal driving music. The haunting 'Hatfield 1980' sums up the early days of Thorn and Watts, where these must have stood out in the home counties as being a little weird!

Quite simply this is a grower.

1 out of 5 stars techno disappointment.......2006-07-13

"Amplified Heart" this is not. Tracy's wonderful voice is lost in the constant pounding of electronic drum disco beat. It sucks.

5 out of 5 stars One of those CDs that I play over and over and over...........2006-06-30

I bought this disk based on an enthusiastic reivew in Salon.Com back in the 90s. I have listened to it at least once every month since. I own thousands of CDs, that is saying a lot!!! I usually don't listen to this type of music but that album is so outstanding in every way instrumentation, vocals, production, lyrics...you name it.

2 out of 5 stars A collection of "Tempermental" and insubstantial remixes.......2002-12-08

Everything But The Girl's "Tempermental" single includes not only that standout track from their 1999 album TEMPERMENTAL, but also seven remixes.

The first track of the single is the original version of "Tempermental." While the opening drum machine beats sound clumsy and amateurish, as soon as Tracy Thorn's vocals come in the song becomes captivating. The second track is the Hex Hector/Mac Quayle Remix, which brings in better and more ambient drum effects and improved arrangement of the vocals. It also includes some vinyl stretch to facilitate mixing it into a DJ set. "Tempermental (Ralphi Rosario remix)" is one of the more idiosyncratic remixes on the single, displaying features of pop, ambient, and techno. "Tempermental (DJ Spen & Karizma remix)", the fourth track, is a house remix that isn't too interesting, but does have additional production (including some odd synths).

Chris Brann, a.k.a. Wamdue Project a.k.a. Ananda Project, has contributed two remixes to this single. The first, "Tempermental (Wamdue Project remix)", is nearly unrecognisable at first as a remix of the original, as it features additional instrumentation, including piano and apparently live drumming. In the end this remix is unsatisfying as it seems insubstantial. Chris Brann's second remix is "Tempermental (Ananda Project)". This one is repetitive and is incredibly disappointing compared to other Ananda Project efforts.

The seventh track is the Hex Hector/Mac Quayle Reverse Drum Dub. Note that this is NOT the absolutely heavenly remix found on Deep Dish's RENAISSANCE: IBIZA release. That one is actually Deep Dish's personal edit and is not found on this single. The Reverse Drum Dub is very similar and will probably satisfy any DJ looking to spin that mix himself.

The single closes with "Tempermental (Da Deepah dub)", which is another DJ Spen and Karizma contribution. It's annoying and difficult to listen to, and makes a disappointing close to the single.

All in all, I would not recommend the "Tempermental" single. Everything But The Girl really amazed listeners with their album TEMPERMENTAL, but the singles from that are pretty poor.

5 out of 5 stars More, More, More.......2002-09-10

An amazing dance song put out by an amazing group who has already demonstrated there ability to get anyone out there to dance. I would definatly recommend it to anyone.

      3 out of 5 stars Temperamental.......2000-12-30

Very good track from EBTG. The most notable remix is the Hex Hector-Mac Quayle (HQ2) remix. It's just so intense. The Ralphi Rosario remix is not that bad either. It's a good single to add to any club remix collection.

5 out of 5 stars There're some truly amazing remixes on this CD........2000-07-29

Everything But The Girl's "Temperamental" is a fine track on their full-length album of the same name. With the release of this single, though, I almost want to skip over the original version of the song - the remixes give it that much more power.

Tracks 2, 3, and 4 are variations on the same theme - "Temperamental" is transformed from its somewhat stark feel into full-on, lush house music. The Hex Hector/Mac Quayle mix is my personal favorite, but each track offers little touches & effects that are unique.

It's tracks 5 and 6, the Wamdue and Ananda Project remixes, that are the showstoppers. You won't find this much of a departure from the original song anywhere else, let me tell you. The music flows, sounding more organic than anything else, but still with a fairly consistent beat that will keep you tapping your foot throughout. Add in some snippets of male vocals, a cool break in track #6 that reminds me of a carnival carousel, and the fact that you can totally lose yourself in the depths of these tracks... well, let's just say that remixer Chris Brann has outdone himself here. The two tracks together are almost 25 minutes long, and rightfully so.

For tracks 7 and 8, it's back to basics. Hex Hector and Mac Quayle return with a shorter version of their first mix, but with the interesting twist of reversing Tracey Thorn's vocals. Track #8 is a dub of the song, with strong bass. It'll get you on your feet as the CD comes to a close.

Is "Temperamental" worth the money? With mixes like these, and a playing time longer than the original album, the answer is a definite yes. What a ride.

"temperamental angel", with songs written and co-produced by gilli moon, is an expression of personality, of raw emotion, and how we relate to the people in our lives through the various love-hate disguises of our personas. It sends powerful messages about self-empowerment, embracing the full range of human passions and emotions, through a uniquely alternative, edgy sound. The album captures gilli's raw and sensitive emotions combined with her unique, natural voice. Keeping with her vision, much of the production was spontaneous following a very organic approach, with all recording using live instruments. Even before the release of the album, "Plenty" one of the scheduled singles, has recently won Best Pop Song in The Netherlands Song Expo.

        The promise is fulfilled!

Last summer, I reviewed Girl In The Moon, gilli moon's debut CD, which I stumbled upon through the Internet (its "Girl in the Moon" was a hugely popular MP3 download, and one of my favorite songs of last year).

Now gilli moon, a Californian these days by way of Australia, by way of Italy (and known to her family as Gilli Aliotti), is releasing her second solo disc this month, and it's an even stronger collection than her first. An amazingly mature and complex album, Temperamental Angel speaks to the bare emotions of love, hate, empowering sensuality and hand-tying vulnerability in all of us.

The album opens with "Communication," a spoken word piece which observes "we all have different masks we wear. We are complex individuals with complex personalities ... I am sweet, loving, angelic, and angry, unheard, demonic ..."

Moon bravely examines these dichotomies throughout Temperamental Angel. In the title track, her whispery, lilting upper register brings to mind a young Kate Bush, mixed with the angst of Alanis Morissette, as she admits "I'm a sucker for conventional romance" and considers "what if I had never experienced this period in my life?"

Temperamental Angel delivers with a wide swatch of styles and confessions. In "Naked," the bass cuts a sinuous groove as she admits with unembarrassed sensual honesty, "I like getting naked with you."

In "Plenty," she melds a tinkly piano with a silky smooth bass and a quivering-on-the-edge of discovery vocal as she asks "will I cross the river to the other side of paradise? ... maybe ... will I see the rainbow like the fairytales my mother told so plenty?"

The guitars crunch and twine beneath her as she quavers and twists, small whispering voices answering more assured declarations, a symphony of inner turmoil uncovered and recorded.

Then in "Swimming," a somber piano backs her as she sings a deeply emotional, stirringly beautiful hymn of loss, revealing that "I lost what I never thought I'd find/I'm swimming dark and blind ...was it all a lie?" She struts and growls in the pounding "Disgrace," gets confrontationally funky in "Touch Me," and slips into forgivably gorgeous schmaltz with the Burt Bacharach-like horn arrangement of the melancholic "Why Do You Love Me Still?"

Temperamental Angel proves that you don't have to be on a major label with a million dollar budget to make a great record. Because gilli moon's not, and Temperamental Angel is. Seek this one out (and read the diary of the making of the album) at www.gillimoon.com.

4 out of 5 stars Sounds Review, Australia.......2001-01-30

REVIEW Jan 01 by Jacky Gleeson gilli moon is one helluva busy woman. She is a founding member, President and US representative of Songsalive!, www.songsalive.org, she has had her hands full with all of this and a couple of music projects, including Jessica Christ, her own solo career and her own record-label Warrior Girl Music www.warriorgirl.com but she has still managed to combine the last two aspects of her life in the release of the first album on her new label, Temperamental Angel.

Reading the lyrics on this album (separately from listening to the music) is not like reading poetry, with rhymes in couplets or other well-used techniques in today's songwriting: it's like reading a collection of short stories about different aspects, fragments of and journeys within the author's life. Then you turn the CD on and are immediately blown away by the ferocity of the mood-swings. Right from the opening track one is left searching aimlessly for the right superlatives to describe the travels this record takes your moods through.

There is a multitude of influences, sounds and moods on this record. In the opening track, Communication, we're given a sense of Pink Floyd's One Of My Turns ("The Wall" 1979) where there are two characters: one of which is talking but the other doesn't seem to be in the same room. Then we're introduced to gilli's inimitable singing and songwriting style in the title track: Breathy, sultry vocals: a cross between Nicholece K Garner & Tori Amos. The mood then flows through love-of-life (Plenty), the expression of unbridled sexuality (Naked), through the heart-stabbing pain of Swimming, the pure-hate of Disgrace, the musical tug-o-war around the emotion of the Why Do You Love Me Still, the "early-stages in the relationship/`love makes you croon to the moon in June'/there will be no end/this is the one" love of Touch Me to the swirling, almost Phantom Of The Opera/ENZSO balladic instrumentation Alive to close.

Many people can be thankful to gilli moon's input to song and music writers in Sydney and LA, and all the accolades in her direction prior to this release confirm just what she has been saying all these years. Now everyone can see that there is a lot more to gilli moon than actor/songwriter/record executive/artist/record producer/lead-singer - there is a passionate woman that has a lot to be thankful for, a lot to express and a lot of hard work ahead from the success of her debut album Temperamental Angel on Warrior Girl Music http://www.warriorgirlmusic.com

Temperamental Angel hits the stores across the United States on April 10.

Gilli Moon's second album opens with a spoken word piece that's reminiscent of Laurie Anderson. Then the rest of the record unfolds and reveals itself to be a unique mix of accessible hooks, passionate vocals and heartfelt lyrics. Moon effectively captures a variety of moods with her music. The title track has its fair share of Alanis Morrissette's explosive nature. By contrast the ballad "Why Do you Love Me Still?" is tender and sweet and should top the lists in a fair universe. She's an intriguing new voice to listen out for. Anna Maria Stjärnell www.collectedsounds.com, Sweden

Since 1996 this Aussie artist has recorded for two different labels. Combining poetry with techno rock, she explores a plethora of emotions and styles. From a spoken-word intro to her use of exotic instrumentation, the songs are eye opening. Album Description

Guido Deiro, the Italian-American accordion virtuoso-- frequently called "The Great Deiro"-- was of paramount importance in the popularization of the accordion in the early 20th century. The first accordionist to perform on the Vaudeville stage (1910), he was also the first accordionist to make sound recordings (Edison Wax Cylinders, 1911). For many years Deiro was a headline attraction at the great vaudeville houses throughout America and abroad, and made more than 100 recordings for the Columbia record company. On Bridge's 2-CD set, Henry Doktorski's sparkling performances of Deiro's music quickly confirm the reason for Deiro's immense popularity. In 1913, Deiro met the young vaudeville performer, and later-to-be Hollywood starlette, Mae West, while both were performing on a vaudeville show in Detroit. The couple quickly fell in love and secretly married. Henry Doktorski's liner notes detail Deiro and West's torrid love affair, and early photograph's of Deiro, provided by Deiro's son, Count Guido Deiro Jr., add to the significance of this release. Deiro's delightful compositions are a window onto an era long past, much like the re-discovery of Scott Joplin's music, twenty-five years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Accordion as you have never heard it!.......2007-04-03

Guido Deiro was the first virtuoso of this much maligned and very difficult to play instrument. An accomplished composer and recording star, Deiro was a hughely popular in Vaudeville. The liner notes reveal his marriage to Mae West and I enjoyed the vintage photos. Henry Doktorski plays Deiro's compositions with great technique and every piece is a revelation of what the accordion is really capable of when played by a master musician.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Album.......2005-01-04

This two CD set is certainly worth the money. Henry Doktorski's performance is indeed breathtaking. It is as if someone were transported back to the days when Guido Deiro himself was performing these songs. Guido Deiro was a recording pioneer who he became the first star piano-accordionist, the first piano-accordionist to perform on the vaudeville stage, and to make sound recordings(I've got at least two of Mr. Deiro's old Columbia 78 RPM records at home). In fact, Guido became the first person to coin the phrase "Piano-accordion." You'll find plenty of good stuff about Guido in Mr. Doktorski's liner notes on the two-CD set as well as on the GuidoDeiro.com website. Mr. Doktorski's sparkling performance certainly does Mr. Deiro's songs justice.
