Shooting Stars

Editorial Reviews
Amy Carlson, Special to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, October 21.1998
While the berScenesters aren't creating any new musical waves, they are always expanding their ultra-cool image and songwriting horizons. With plenty of catchy hooks and entertaing lyrics, the guys have what it takes to rise above some unoriginal novelty band. Consider these lyrics from their ultra-catchy pop tune "You Worked Me Over." "I'm hyper-aware and it burns me to the core/I could be the president and 10 times more/but you worked me over/that's why I adore you." Equally satisfying is the big guitar sound of "If You're Sexy-Go To Mexi-co": "I will meet you at the corner of Grand and Sexy...Now the most recent thing I hear is you're moving to the West Coast/I think that's the most impressive thing I've ever heard in my life." Thus it is in their live shows where the real magic is found, where their unique style and infectious songs come to life. The band is completely likable; a tad pretentious, slipping attitude into everything from the way they move to the way! they dress--usually layers of black clothing (leather is their friend) and dark shades; and if they happen to be in prime form, they'll take control of the stage giving audiences a taste of their own rock 'n' roll angst.

"What I Am," the leadoff track on Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, was a left-field hit off this Dallas band's debut album, and it remains about the only thing they're remembered for (excepting Brickell's eventual marriage to Paul Simon). But a good part of this album is quite listenable and stands up reasonably well to the years. "Love Like We Do," "Little Miss S." and "The Wheel" are basically equal to "What I Am" in their rhythmic and melodic pop appeal; "Air of December" and "She" allow the band's more jazz-oriented roots a little room to flourish, and the poignantly personal ballad "Circle" remains the best lyric Brickell has written. It was all downhill from here, but Shooting Rubberbands was an early peak worth revisiting. --Peter Blackstock

5 out of 5 stars This album is a CLASSIC to many Edie fans........2007-07-08

I understand why some reviewers don't care for Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians, but to those of us that love them - "Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars" is a classic. Since I am not a musician, I cannot comment on the musicianship but, the lush lyrics and visual imagery are amazing. Edie Brickell paints pictures with her words and ethereal delivery and this is a particular talent that few singers accomplish. Furthermore, she sings with emotion which always connects with the audience and, if you have ever seen her live, you'll understand why she has a fervent following. Edie & The New Bohemians have a great chemistry together. I didn't care for her solo efforts as much - too much Paul Simon influence for my taste. Best of all, Edie has stayed true to herself despite the "One Hit Wonder" moniker. For true Edie fans, she was far more than a "One Hit Wonder" and she connects on a personal level.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Believe the Hype!.......2007-02-22

I never cared for "What I Am," the only song I'd heard by her. But it seems like everywhere I go, I'm reading or hearing about how good this album is, and how talented she is. I had a good friend tell me that "What I Am" was actually the weakest song on the album, and the rest was great stuff.

I finally tried it and I gotta say... SHE SUCKS!! Every track after the first famous one sounds exactly the same, with her whining, flat voice grating in the exact same way. I've heard cats that sang better than this woman.

Ebay is my friend. This CD is no longer in my house.

This is THE best Edie Brickell album. Just listen to the first 3 tracks and you'll be hooked. They're all just as good as the next. If you don't own an Edie album and are thinking about purchasing one, this is a really good place to start. Ghost of a Dog comes in a close second.

Even though this qualifies as the Etobicoke, Ontario, band's first "rock" album in five years, Night of the Shooting Stars is still as loopy as the best of the Rheostatics' work. After 1996's The Blue Hysteria, the band released a bewildering variety of discs, including a kids' album (The Story of Harmelodia), a tribute to Canada's most famous painters (Music Inspired by the Group of Seven), a collection of CBC radio recordings (The Nightlines Sessions), and even a gargantuan live set (Double Live). That diversity is still in evidence in the relatively straightforward Night of the Shooting Stars, which opens with a typically bizarre triptych: "These Days Are Good for the Canadian Conservative Youth Party Alliance," a monstrous rocker that satirizes young politicos on the make "on the flat Edmonton streets"; a rocked-up version of the children's song "Song of the Garden," one of two songs that could have been on The Story of Harmelodia; and "Mumblety-peg," a jumble of surreal images and childhood reminisces by Dave Bidini (one of the band's three singer-songwriters). There are all sorts of strange stories and memories lurking around in here. In "The Junction Foil Ball," guitarist-singer Martin Tielli sings of "Canadian Club and Solitaire," before asking someone to "show me the drugs in your mom's room." In "We Went West," bassist-singer Tim Vesely describes their very first tour, a westward jaunt across Canada that apparently continued well past the B.C. coastline. And in "Satan Is the Whistler," a two-part song by Tielli, a mysterious ski hill is colonized by the likes of Nike and Evian. While the tales may be unsettling, the music on Night of the Shooting Stars is loud, infectiously melodic, and largely free of the fussiness and pretensions that can mar their recordings. Only the Rheostatics can turn a line like "I chipped my eyetooth on the back of a urinal" into a catchy refrain. --Jason Anderson

Album Description

Recorded at Chemical Sound in Toronto, during the early months of 2001, Night of the Shooting Stars is the first guest-free Rheostatics album since `91's Melville. Mixed by long-time friend, and occasional drummer Michael Philip Wojewoda and recorded by Alun Piggins and Ian Blurton, Night of the Shooting Stars finds the band in a rockier, melodic mode. Many of the 13 tracks have been road-tested and are familiar to dedicated fans. The album also includes a driving `rock' version of `The Song of the Garden'. The first single is P.I.N., with a video to be produced by Justin Stephenson, who also produced the `Stolen Car' video.

Album Details

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2004-10-22

A great album for Rheostatic fans and those who've never heard them. I don't think this one is as good as Whale Music or Introducing Happiness, but it's at least as good as Blue Hysteria. I've been a fan of the Rheo's since Whale Music came out, and I've always liked them for their playfulness, their incredible musicianship and their ability to move me with songs I'd never thought would be moving. Even on a less experimental album like this one, they sound fresh. The guitar work on this album is amazing, and evocative. The Rheostatics have always been able to paint the most amazing pictures with their music. Buy this album. My favorite songs include PIN, Mumbletypeg, and the Reward. I'm eagerly awaiting the release of 2067.

4 out of 5 stars La Notte di Tielli e Bidini........2002-07-01

After 5 strong years with the Rheostatics, this record marks a fond farewell to drummer, cellist, studio owner and 4th string singer-songwriter Don Kerr. After the loss of not one but two longhaired percussion wunderkinds in their career, one has to ponder if it's maybe time to stop pouring bacon fat all over the kits, sending them out in the freezing hail to push the crosswalk button at red lights, etc.

As for this Night Of The Shooting Stars business: In keeping with the simple, stripped down nature of the album packaging, these 13 songs comprise some of the simplest bare-bones exercises in rock and pop these artsy Canadians have ever touched with a ten foot pole. Luckily, it's still a strange and thorougly enriching work, despite the reservations of some longtime fans to whom a lot of this is old material ("Song of the Garden" and "Junction Foil Ball" are remakes, so you know.)

Martin and Dave clock in with some of their most accomplished songwriting to date, coming to a head in their co-lead gem "The Fire." The saccharine sweet pop of "P.I.N." and "Mumbletypeg" juxtapose (do you like that word?) some of the disarming lyrics and disorienting mid-stride tempo shifts of the album's latter half. Every cut has that unmistakeable Rheos charm, that sense of wonderment and chemistry and zany half-imagined folklore, although it's easy to mistake Tim's more pedestrian cuts on this album as padding in between the more ambitious jaunts of Sirs Bidini and Tielli.

So yeah, enough already, it's great. I bet you the reader will like this here CD. Push the Add To Cart button ... wait for it ... waiiiitt forrr itttt ... NOW!

5 out of 5 stars They Never Disappoint.......2002-02-27

One of Canadian Music's greatest accomplishments!
The Rheostatics have a reputation for making excellent music, and this is a prime example.
Very cleverly written, and complimented with Martin Tielli's guitar work, you can't go wrong.
An album that not Canadian or Rock fan should live without.

        5 out of 5 stars John Wolf Brennan . . . .......2007-03-11

. . . the Irish/Swiss pianist--another artist (along with Jan Garbarek) I give a free pass to. But could you think of two more different musicians? The latter has achieved huge, and I'm sure gratifying, success; the former? Few know him or have heard his music: he sadly and absolutely wrongly resides in relative obscurity, despite more than two dozen discs as leader to his name. The Swiss Michael Moore? Maybe. The latter plays heartbreakingly beautiful melancholic jazz. The former often assays the outer precincts of cutting-edge jazz. The latter plays tenor and soprano sax--having achieved a concept and tone on the higher-register instrument as original and instantly recognizable as the late, great Steve Lacy. The former plays piano, in a hugely virtuoso way, evoking stylings as diverse as Cecil Taylor, Marilyn Crispel, Irene Schweizer, Don Pullen, Paul Bley, Egberto Gismonti, Horace Tapscott, and Mal Waldron.

But they have something sly, hugely redolent, and highly unlikely in common: an absolute adoration of and ability to effortlessly evoke oceans of mesmeric folk-jazz.

Shooting Stars & Traffic Lights was recorded twelve years ago (in 1995). But you'd hardly know it. Ordinarily, I'd be a little hacked off buying what I thought was a recently recorded disc that actually came out more than a decade ago (on Bellaphon). But when you're dealing with an artist of the caliber of John Wolf Brennan, that simply doesn't matter: He regularly delivers music of such beauty and provocation as to render its release date irrelevant.

Certainly, this band, featuring three out of four members of Pago Libre (Brennan, piano and melodica; Tscho Theissing, violin; and Daniele Patumi, bass), was a kind of template for that altogether remarkable outfit (still going, by the way, and entirely worth checking out). The inclusion of Swiss saxist John Voirol--a name I've never heard before, but someone thoroughly steeped in the history of jazz saxophone and displaying a huge sound and chops to die for--and West Coast percussion iconoclast Alex Cline alone lifts these proceedings way beyond ordinary undertakings. With both operating at stratospheric levels, this band is goosed into epic felicitations. For a taste of their heroic contributions, check out Cline's mind-boggling outro on "Kabak" and Voirol's ruminations on "Gathering at the Threshold": quite extraordinary.

This music, bursting with insane creativity even as it tugs at our heartstrings, represents some kind of pinnacle of chamberish, folk-jazz/New Music absurdity. Certainly one of the 10 most compelling disc in my very large array. I simply cannot implore you strongly enough to check out this ridiculously brilliant music, hopefully, opening a door to that neglected genius, John Wolf Brennan.

A good CD, but as the reviewer above asked, where is Hand Held, Videotech, Mirror Mirror? Found the answer on the BBC Hitch Hickers Guide site h2g2 (a web attempt at a review of everything). Basically, WEA owned the rights, and has yet to release for a recording. Note - this info was removed a few months ago from the site, so we can hope for a release someday to complement the current collection?

5 out of 5 stars More important than you might think.......2004-03-27

Guys 'n' dolls were a six-piece middle of the road pop group that had two UK top five hits in the early seventies with There's a whole lot of loving and You don't have to say you love me. David Van Day and the Canadian-born Thereza Bazar broke away and became the duo, Dollar. While their music had some similarities with the earlier group, it had a much more contemporary feel with plenty of synthesizers and other electronic wizardry, which will not necessarily appeal to the same fans.

Most of Dollar's UK hits, including three of their five top ten hits (Mirror mirror, Give me back my heart, Oh l'amour), were recorded for WEA beginning in 1980. This compilation focuses on the recordings they made for Carrere in the seventies and contains most of their recordings from that period (one album with a few bonus tracks) but none of the later stuff, which seems to be unavailable on CD as I write this.

These recordings include four UK hits. The first two (Shooting star, Who were you with in the moonlight) both made the top twenty. Love's got a hold on me made the top five. I wanna hold your hand (a Beatles cover) made the top five. Most of the other songs are originals but Sugar sugar is a cover of the 1969 Archies hit.

The liner notes are extensive and tell enthusiastically of their later recordings, explaining how they changed the direction of British pop music. It is clear that the record company would love to re-issue some of the later recordings, which are different again from what is here. The liner notes also tell of their romance - how it came about (interesting) leading eventually to engagement but not marriage. Thereza end up in Australia as a happily married mother while David ended up selling burgers. Such is life.

If you are interested in British pop music of the late seventies, you might enjoy this collection.
