Album Description
Fritter is the solo project of Elizabeth Steen, keyboard player with Tanya Donelly, Natalie Merchant, and Count Zero, a wildly inventive Boston band. On Mockery, Steen's voice comes to the forefront with producer and collaborator Peter Moore, and band members from Count Zero, Natalie Merchant's band, and Kill Henry Sugar. The sound is richly layered with shimmering textures which dart and delve much as the lyrics do around such themes as disillusionment, self-deception, and wobbly convictions. The sweet pop sound of the CD is a foil for the conflict inscribed in the lyrics. From the contradiction between the two, the name of the CD and its title track, Mockery, is derived.

The US Black Metal scene has always been different than those originators from the Scandinavian territories. While the majority of the bands in the Nordic icy lands want to be on top of the dance charts these days, American bands like Leviathan only gets fueled with even more mental demonism to continue warring onwards. The material from Howl Mockery At The Cross consists of remastered demo tracks, unreleased tracks, and a cover song (no, it's not a Darkthrone song). Though one could imagine how a Leviathan demo would actually really sound, they do not really sound different than any of Leviathan's "normal" studio efforts. Lo-fi primitive black metal is what you'll get here and nothing much else. For purists only.

This collection of song cycles is simply beautiful. Collected from Finno-Ugric peoples around the Baltic sea area, near Tormis' homeland of Estonia, the songs range from complex arrangements to snippets. Most of the peoples represented on the disk (the Livonians, Karelians, Ingrians, etc.) are dying out, and their languages are almost dead as well. Tormis' beautiful choral arrangements awaken the need to preserve these cultures, and are especially meaningful to anyone with Finno-Ugric heritage. Get the 2-CD set if possible -- it's definitely worth it.
