This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context.

The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Recordings.......2007-06-11

In our view the changes in pointing, and excellent selection of chants, give deeper meanings to the Psalms than those achieved in the "standard?" Parish Psalter.

We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.

Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.

4 out of 5 stars A- for effort.......2006-02-23

This grand undertaking deserves high praise, and I'm struck, listening to chant after chant, how much Anglican chant as it used to be until the changes of the 70s was one of the great Victorian contributions to English life and art. For anyone who wants to hear almost the entire repertoire of Anglican chant deployed in singing the whole book of Psalms, this is an unrivalled source. It is wonderful, too, to hear the Coverdale translation: you realize what the churches have lost by abandoning the proper & regular singing of the Psalms. So one is immensely grateful to Hyperion for putting out this recording. It's not perfect, though.

The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.

5 out of 5 stars What can you say?.......2003-01-03

I almost hate to criticize this terrific thing. After all, where else can you get all 150 Psalms in a single collection sung by one of the world's great choirs?

How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.

One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.

So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.

Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.

    5 out of 5 stars Pink Fairies-'Live At The Roundhouse/Previously..'(Big Beat).......2004-03-02

Superb Pink Fairies CD to have, one of those two-on-one releases.First segment is a five song/45-minute one off reunion gig that the Fairies played with the original line-up in 1975.The sound mix on "City Kids","Waiting For The Man","Lucille","Uncle Harry's Last Freakout" and "Going Down" simply couldn't be better. The next six tunes labeled as 'Previously Unreleased' is so-so,with the best track being "Waiting For The Lightning To Strike"(would make a good Alice Cooper tune). The disc closes out with a three song EP titled 'Twink And The Fairies',circa 1977 I believe and it's a bit funky. It's Pink Fairies drummer Twink carrying on with his own project.Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Can - 'Can-Box Music - Live 1971-1977' (Mute).......2006-11-02

Even if you happen to be discovering Can's music for the first time, this nine track/2-CD is a must-have.Remember reading about before 'Can-Box Music' became available, that guitarist Michael Karoli (R.I.P.) had taken time to PAINSTAKINGLY search through archive tapes of the German progressive band's past live performances. His effort had more than payed off, by this treasured 2-CD release. Sound of these tracks are quite good. Some, I believe might've been recorded by fans in the audience. Live takes from concerts that took place in Brighton,London and Croydon,UK and Cologne,Germany have been faithfully preserved with top notch audio quality for your listening pleasure. Even if you don't like Can's music,JUST hearing the atmosphere on these 2-CD's might appeal to you. Some of the more familiar material here include "Dizzy Dizzy","Yoo Doo Right" and "Spoon". A real treat for long-time Can fans here are the several cuts that were notably 'played spontaneously' onstage and never even rehearsed before, like "Jynx","Fizz",the 37-minute mind-blowing "Colchester Finale" and "Kata Kong". Not many bands can do that and pull it of so well. 100% essential!

4 out of 5 stars Great document of the raw power of live Can.......2005-07-13

Before listening to this, I've enjoyed Tago Mago, Ege Bamasi, and Monster Movie, and I really like how rhythm-oriented the band is. I also listened to the Miles Davis album Agharta, and noticed how close sounding it is to this live set. But being a rocker at heart, the cool jazzy atmosphere of those Miles jams just didn't do it for me. Sure they had cool rhythms, and the funky serpentine guitars weaved throughout the lengthy jams, but after listening to Can's crazy jams, I'm more impressed with Can's hectic rhythm explorations and searing guitar solos. I also like how the bass plays a large part in many of the songs. The amazing 37 minute Colchester Finale is an impressive piece of improvised music, kind of like a funky "Sister Ray". I'm used to listening to boolegs, so i'm used to the less than stellar sound quality, and the musical quality more than makes up for that. I used to like Faust the most of the Krautrockers for their pure weirdness but after experiencing Can's live sets I've realized how awesome these Germans really were. Highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Can concerts beckon.......2004-11-20

Get this CD. It has so much that was never captured on their records in quite the same way. For those who can get into this over repeated listenings, you will undoubted witness the legendary status of Can, naked.

Some might expect the 3-5 minute sheerness of a Can album track. There is none of that here. The album is more welcome to those who dig the longer tracks of the albums, like the 10 minute "Flow Motion". And, surprise, the longer tracks here were edited! Yes, they were even longer before, when the band handpicked and trimmed a large portion of this odd yet solid bunch of tracks.

I agree with most of the reviewers' compliments on this CD. Thus, I urge you bear through the listens you give this. It can easily be experienced like a hammer on the brain. Yet at some point the musical shifts are thrown into higher relief than the droning, and everything begins to stick. For example, I didn't like the very last track on the album for probably the first 9 times I heard all 13 minutes of it. Then one day I noticed the last 3 minutes break into an infectous tribal rhythm romp, and have loved it since.

    5 out of 5 stars Savage!.......2004-05-13

This was my first Can album, which i bought in 2001.And i was not really that impressed on the first few listenings. I liked the guitar solos and the rhythms were good but i felt it lacked something. This was just my preconceptions about music getting in the way of enjoyment. I wanted more solos, more compositional structure. More convention! But i learned eventually to appreciate it on its own terms. It's really a great album, with some monster tracks. I found that i appreciated it more once i had heard other albums and bought into the whole Can ethos. They are primarily a rhythm band, with no 'leader' as such. Jaki's drumming is really groovy throughout. Karoli plays some blinding guitar stuff. Dizzy Dizzy and Vernal Equinox are awesome in this regard. Holger is a no nonsense bass player who adds to the relentlessness of the music. Irmin produces some otherworldly sounds from his instrument. Damo adds to it all with his manic vocals. My favourite parts are the bits from 1975, jynx, dizzy dizzy, vernal equinoxe,yo doo right. The 1972 tunes are awesome too but less hifi. The Colchester finale is a monstrous, 37 minute beast of a song. It is a spontaneous piece which also contains the song hallejuah from the Tago Mago album. I wish more bands were like this!

This is one of the best Can albums. Tago Mago is earthshattering and i would recommend to buy that too.

4 out of 5 stars Boy, was I getting in deep..........2003-03-04

This disc was among the first three of theirs that I heard (none being among their definitive albums). At that time, I certainly wasn't ready for this, and I still don't play this 2-disc set very often. Certainly not from start to finish!

After a time (in my case, about 6 months of occasional listening,) this album began to grow on me. I noticed the subtle nuaces of each composition. Once I got beyond the iffy sound quality, I realized how funky this band could be; about 10 minutes into track one, "Jynx", the music becomes almost disco with it's wakka-wakka guitar (or synth??) before morphing again into a crazy synthesiser meltdown.

I read among these reviews some discerning comments on Suzuki's vocals. Suzuki only appears on two tracks, "Colchester Finale" and "Spoon". "Colchester" meanders and may be too mind-numbingly long for it's own funky goodness, but in-my-humble-opinion "Spoon" may be the highlight of this release. It's easily among the most accessible tracks with it's propulsive, aggressive beat and "Sister Ray"-type guitar. Such dissonance is (almost) poppy today in certain circles. And, may I add, Suzuki's vocals are amazing and completely appropriate for the song. It sounds like some mental patient's nightmare!

Don't buy this as an introduction to the band; on first listen it approaches "Metal Machine Music" difficulty. However, if you've just worked your way through "Tago Mago" go ahead and jump in. Just make sure you're not getting in too deep for your own good.

Like many pianists of her generation, Dame Myra Hess was a performer rather than a recorder. She simply shined in front of an audience, singing out Chopin's F Minor Fantasy in rolling, assertive paragraphs, and delivering a carefully selected Schubert Dance set with twinkling generosity. Her Schubert B Flat Opus Posthumous Sonata is more congenial than searching, yet always singing, and without the strain of her BBC version recorded a decade later. --Jed Distler
