Album Description
The title song is the first recording of what was described in Newsday – 3/3/99 as honoring "people who have passed away from anti-gay violence." The same piece characterized Rapp as "a long-time folkie and lesbian activist who uses music to get a message across."

As author Jack Nichols wrote in the Gay Today 6/16/03 "’Flag and the Rainbow’ evokes the spirit of an era that all fundamentalist religious loonies and Republican zealots despise. This cyclical spirit of the 1960s lives in Sandy Rapp's songs. It is certainly the spirit of the Stonewall... evolving into anthems such as Sandy Rapp herself has composed."

The CD presents a host of catchy, issue-oriented originals, including 'Ballad Of Billy Baird,' which bios the reproductive rights pioneer. 'Roilin' Waters' and ‘Ill, The Winds’ decry nukes. An updated 'Everyone Was At Stonewall' chronicles the gay movement; and a new version of 'Remember Rose: A Song For Choice' protests the first fatality of the 1977 Medicaid-Abortion cutoff and features a cameo vocal by the late Congresswoman Bella Abzug.

Another tune provides an intimate look into Bella’s remarkable Marlene Dietrich impressions. Other songs celebrate Mississippi’s Camp Sister Spirit; and ‘Manhattan Cowgirl’ salutes Eleanor Roosevelt biographer Blanche Wiesen Cook.

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

I bought this CD to play at work for background music and it's great for that. The only thing missing is the usually obligatory 20th Century Fox theme before the main Star Wars theme. Other than that, the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus do a very fine job with Maestro Williams' music, indeed.

Founded by guitarist/songwriter Greg Ginn, Black Flag exploded out of L.A. in 1981 with a debut album so confrontational that MCA Records refused to release it, stating that Black Flag was "immoral" and lacking "redeeming social value." When the album finally came out on Ginn's own SST label, it was clear why MCA recoiled, as Black Flag's skinhead look and hardcore sound signaled a new chapter in punk--and rock in general. With Henry Rollins's venom-dripping vocals leading the way, the album features such hostile teeth-gnashers as "Rise Above" ("Try to stop us/It's no use"), "Six Pack" ("I got a six pack, and nothing to do"), and, of course, "Life of Pain." --Billy Altman

I haven't heard every rock 'n' roll record ever made, but if there was anything angrier committed to vinyl before "Damaged," I haven't come across it.

And if you can't relate to "Depression" in some moments of your life, you're not human, or you're lying to yourself. It's the best song on the album, I think. "Depression's got ahold of me/Depression, gotta break free/Depression's got ahold of me/Depression, it's gonna kill me" -- Been there, felt that, bought the T-shirt.

A few notes --

The guitar tones from Greg Ginn and Dez Cadena sound like they're literally exploding from the speakers, so untamed they make virtually all the early '80s metal axemeisters sound tea-party polite, tone-wise. (Okay, maybe not Eddie Van Halen, but he's a special case).

Cadena had taken over on second guitar (abdicating the lead-vocalist role to Henry Rollins) only a short time before this album was recorded -- it doesn't sound that way. Too bad they didn't stick with the twin-guitar line-up longer.

Rollins joined the band only a short time before the album was recorded -- he was obviously a quick study, and sounds like rage incarnate. But note that the lyrics were all written by Greg Ginn and/or bassist Chuck Dukowski -- only the improv vox on "Damaged I" present Rollins' own words.

Astute old-school metal fans will notice snatches of what appear to be Black Sabbath and AC/DC rhythm riffs here and there -- not a complaint, just historical perspective, and I don't know if Ginn did this deliberately.

Also, you'll notice Ginn and Cadena soloing all over the place. It's funny that the uninformed consider hardcore punk to be pretty much bereft of guitar solos. Not these guys. But it's always careening, reckless stuff, not studied showing-off.

This albums rocks. Nothing is more brutal than Black Flag when fronted by Rollins. In my opinion, this was Black Flag at their punk best. Not much can be said about this album that hasn't already been said. I highly reccomend anyone even slightly interested in getting into hardcore get this album, it's a rush from start to finish.

Okay, first of all this is a good album period-its a change of sound from their previous years, but still it's a good album. I'm not going to choose a side for Black Flag-Morris vs Rollins because Morris rocks hard and Rollins rocks hard. However, I can see how some people don't like their aggressive more hardcore and angry sound found on this album and prefer their less instense more just plain punk theme of Keith Morris Black Flag has and vice versa. In conclusion, if you enjoy a more heavier, angry, twisted, and hardcore sound in your punk buy Damaged. And if you prefer a less intense and more straight up old school punk buy The First four years.

This is arguably the very first Hardcore band. They played for years before this debut, (earlier stuff is on "the First Four Years") but this in my opinion is their crowning achievement.

If it weren't for Black Flag, we would probably not have the Meat Puppets, the Minutemen, Sonic Youth, and a million other Hardcore and post-punk bands. They were one of the most influential punk bands in history, right up there with the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, and Crass, and for good reason too. With Gregg Ginn's distortioned out guitars, Henry Rollin's snarled lyrics that are more blurted out than sung, and the rest of the band providing an adequate, propulsive rhythm section, this band was an abrasive, angry, in your face LA Hardcore outfit, that out did the vast majority of their peers. This album really isnt so much as a collection of random songs, as it is almost a concept album: a concept album about being an angry, depressed, mentally unstable criminal drunk who hates cops. Unlike other Hardcore bands like Minor Threat or Youth Brigade, Black Flag never preached: instead they glorified getting drunk, spitting at the cops, and vandalism. The anger in this album seems pretty genuine to me. A lot of people have a problem with Henry Rollin's vocals. While I admit that they are not quite as good or "punk sounding" as Keith Morris, the original singer, I like them. Listen to this album and you will realize why the cops hated this band.

This album is well put together and I enjoy the old standards. Music is an integral part of our heritage. Often when I listen to this album, I think about what our country has been through and how very, very important it is to appreciate what we have. I spent 3 years living in France in the 60's and I cannot tell you how much all Americans looked forward to going "Home!"

If you like a mix of songs and marches very well played, this CD is for you. The voices of the singers are good, the music support the lyrics and it is easy to listen or to sing along. Also, nearby half of the tunes are played by the Band of the Grenadier Guards and for me, this Band is the best band to play Sousa marches and military marches. The precision of the execution is perfect, the sound is lovely and the technical quality of the recording is perfect. When I listen Anchors Aweigh, I always hear the sound of the waves and it is one of the only bands that gives me this feeling. If you have just one CD of military music to buy, you may buy this one; it is a best buy.

As usual, "Dixie," "The Bonnie Blue Flag," and other songs of a Southern genre are conspicuously absent. Why not throw in a couple of rap tunes to make this album truly "American?"

I do not own this CD--though it appears it would be a wonderful album to listen to. I was compelled to write my review because of the misspelling of our national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner (as opposed to "The Star Bangled Banner" as it appears not once but twice on the song list). I do hope this error is corrected.

For all those patriots out there who want to listen to classical patriotic music, then get this album. This has a lot of tracks from yankee doodle march to the Washington post march. Even Amazing grace is here. The orchestras and the chorus here, gave there best performance ever.

I thought that their first album would be pure punk and was slightly suprised to hear reggae music interjected between groups of songs. It gives the album a nice contrast but I'm not a big fan of reggae. I get the fact that both types of music have anti-authoritarian ideals, but it may be awhile before I decide to buy any more of their albums. Different Class Harmonica

This is the real stuff right here. The Godfathers of hardcore. It was the craziest and fastest album of its time. The songs still influence till this day. They invented the breakdown, listen to Right Brigade... I want to show that to every kung-fu dancing emo jerk to teach them what real hardcore is. Banned in D.C. has the best intro to any song ever... nuff said. Filled with energy and positivity, this is a must have in any collection.

So i got this cd on friday having only heard the song soul craft and at first i was a little dissapointed because it was nothing like i expected, but i listened to it a few more times and i love it if youre into any punk or hardcore this is a must have

and this goes in whenever the cd player runs out of batteries. who knows what punk really is and i'm not looking for an arguement about the subject but the people who say they like "punk" and listen to avril lavinge (spelling?) should have a copy of this record thrown at them from a moving car. this record, i think is their very best, the fastest record i've ever heard, even bad brains themselves couldn't keep the pace. rock for light has a lot of the same songs but i just feel like they're weak in comparison, maybe they were on better speed for this one, who knows...anyway, it's so much more raw and the tones of the guitars, particularly on the solos, have a marvelous presence. just one of the best records ever in any genre, it can be apreciated on the basis of sheer energy alone.

Bad Brains' early recordings found themselves in so many different releases that defining anything as their "first" album is pretty dicey. The Brains' apparent "first" demos were released on CD in the late 90's in the album "Black Dots;" this album itself had been previously released in the late 80's as "Attitude: The ROIR Sessions" before getting the special edition treatment after an endorsement by the Beastie Boys.

While this isn't their best album in terms of performance and songwriting, it is certainly their most accessible. Earl Hudson's drums lead the attack, directing Darryl Jenifer's bass and Dr. Know's guitar like a drill sergeant preparing troops for war. Dr. Know, easily the most gifted guitarist in the history of punk, drops crazy power-chord rhythms and frenzied, acrobatic solos, while Jenifer reinvents rock bass with his jazz-funk runs and tight grooves. Much is made of frontman H.R.'s pioneering performance on this album; while his incredible range does sound remarkable on this album (particularly within the context of what was coming out of the D.C. punk scene at the time), the cheap effects somewhat undermine its impact.

What keeps this album from being a five-star rockfest, at least for me, is the campy production value (Black Dots, recorded in the varying rooms of some guy's house, is mixed better than this album). Most of these songs were re-recorded for the vastly superior Rock For Light album.

Black Flag were an incredible hardcore band before hardcore had a name. Along with the Germs and several other california bands they did the genre at least a hundred times better than the DC kids who came along later and claimed to invent it while simultanously beating the crap out of anybody who didnt adhere to their militant straight edge philosophy(ironically this practice left straight edge founder and Minor Threat vocalist Ian MacKaye mortified). This cd best shows Black Flag's hardcore beginings. If you like it buy the Everything Went Black compilation and then if you still want more get Damaged(even though I never found it to be that great, people say it's a masterpeice). Then go on to My War and the more experimental stuff if you still care.

Before Henry Rollins came along, Black Flag was slamming forward with a force to be reckoned with. Guitarist and founder Greg Ginn orchestrated a sound that was far from pleasant or catchy. The grinding, shredding sound of hardcore punk that can be heard on "The First Four Years" should come with an advisory for those who have never jumped in the waters that Black Flag swum in; because this music is not for the faint of heart. Don't believe me? Listen to "Nervous Breakdown", "Fix Me", "I've Had It", "Wasted", "Revenge", "White Minority", "Six Pack", and "I've Heard It Before", and decide for yourself. Every track on this disc is loaded with attitude and heart that is very rarely matched in any genre of music, helping cement Black Flag not only as pioneers in the world of hardcore and punk, but as one of the most immitated, but never duplicated, bands over the past couple decades. And as much as I enjoy their later material with Henry Rollins, I must say that this is some of the best music that I have ever heard, period. A masterpiece in every way, shape, and form; Black Flag is the absolute real deal in hardcore punk rock.

I've always considered the Nervous Breakdown 7" to be the finest 7" ever made, which is saying a lot and, actually, virtually impossible to say considering there's so many amazing ones out there. But this one is something special. And when you hear it with the other 3 records here it shows you that BLACK FLAG created some of the finest hardcore punk rock ever. In fact, after their first album, Damaged, they stormed off the charts themselves, into some sorta experimental punk yuk, excluding, of course, the wonderful 2xLP, Everything Went Black of these same songs done by a variety of their earlier singers.

I'm old now. 51. When I heard these songs as they came out in the late 70's and early 80's each record tore our heads off. The intensity, the pure punk, the distinct guitar and nihilistic lyrics all came smashing together as a pillar of punk as it formed in those years.

They had some difficulty with some record label that caused them to not release maybe as many records as they might otherwise have over those first four years. We can at least be thankful that these records exist as well as the favor they did us releaseing Everything Went Black. There's not too many live shows floating around from that period either, a real loss.

Let's review the songs shall we?
Nervous Breakdown is so intense. The whole 7" benefits by having Keith Morris on vocals, the perfect match. I still get worked up when this song comes on.
Fix Me. An excellent plea for mental health services, in a very punk rock way. Abrupt, sharp, short. Punk rock man.
I've Had It. And I mean it maan. Pure power, pure punk.
Wasted says it all. Drugs, out of control and blasting into a brick wall.
Jealous Again. One of the beauties of punk rock is that it takes the antithisis of rock when it comes to love songs. Funny thing is, this is a love song, well, you can't tell cuz it's a punch in the face too. Love with a cobra. In all its glory.
Revenge. Who can ask for more vocally? The total punk package.
White Minority. RAW POWER in Italy covers this song with an Italian accent. Wonderful.
No Values. Nihilism in the extreme. Another song that just blasts me off still.
You Bet We've Got Something Personal Against You! One of the finest lyrical openings of a song ever.
Six Pack. I barely drink but I get so into this song. It's the power and intensity and perfection of punk rock that they deliver. I'm bellowing 'six pack' at the end.
I've Heard It Before. Ever get frustrated? Wanna release? Just listen here and sing along. The cure comes and so quickly.
American Waste. Ya want politics? The beginning of the end for BLACK FLAG but at least this 7" and the Damaged LP still had guts and musical intensity, not that nonesense of the later albums.
Machine. I'm not a machine. Ode to industrial living.
Louie Louie. I think most of us were surprised they covered this back in the day. No body covered old songs like that, least punk bands, not that I remembered. But they did it with pinnache. Possibly an effort to get on the radio. That's ok. Everything they did in the first four years was punk heaven.
Damaged I. The Henry influence begins its terrible journey. I'm so intense. Fortunately, he didn't drag them totally down and out yet, or whomever's fault those later albums were.

If yer a punk and you don't own this (or the 3 7"s and the 12") then your punkness is incomplete. I don't know how they came up with these songs but they're as perfect as punk ever got. All hardcore. Short songs. Angry. Intense. Powerful in every sense. Thank you BLACK FLAG. This music will live as long as humans do. I'm just wondering what I'll think of it if I make it to 71 or 91? Black Flag this CD kicks, makes me feel like jumping into a mosh pit at the age of 45 yrs old. It takes off where punk rock left off in the late 70s, makes me feel alive. If you like punk this one is a must have.

This is one of the best collections of any band ever compiled! Comes with the classics by Keith and Gregg Ginn that put, black flag on the map! You just can't go wrong with the quick yet catchy songs that just stay in your head all day long. Fix Me and Wasted are a quick blur and that's how punk songs should be. Not some sort of Opera rock that goes on for nine and a half minutes long... Six Pack was always a funny song to sing along. "What are we gonna do!?! the t.v. is broken!!! OH NO we're gonna miss our favorite shows!!" "my girlfriend asked me which i liked better i hope she doesn't leave me" It's kinda of a two for one album when you listen to it because both vocalist brought their own style to the band. Find out what the fuss is over this band and pick up a classic comp!

I saw The Paul Butterfield Blues Band a number of times, as well as The Electric Flag, not to mention The Byrds, and so many others, all at the venerable old Golden Bear, back in the days when Huntington Beach was a sleepy little surf town in the old California tradition. Right on Pacific Coast Highway, this haven of great music was an oasis in the County, Orange. We'd wait hours outside to get front row seats (the place held a hundred at most - there were no bad seats), the wind howling off the Pacific Ocean (it was always winter when the best bands were around, for some reason - at least in my memory). The Electric Flag, by the way, was named after a flag that was on stage when they played, with a chrome pipe sticking up out of this aparatus, and flag hung from the pipe. When the gizmo was turned on, it blew the flag sideways by means of some hidden fan - an American Flag, by the way. Saw CTA at the Whiskey (then the Whiskey A Go-Go) on Sunset Strip, right before the first album came out -Terry Kath was their first and only real guitarist, and the horns were incredible. All this music set the standard for so much music to come. Anyway, re: this album - buy it. It's not only historically significant as others have made clear, it's just incredible music. When Buddy would play - and he was a huge man - he'd sweat from song One - then be drenched for the rest of the set. Great blues voice, as well as a great drummer. He wore an American Flag shirt when saw I him play. Think he had double bass drums. And how he would sing and play incredible rhythms simultaneously was a thing to behold. I miss that music. I"ve heard lots of blues and rock since, but nothing like that. THOSE were musicians who didn't need a producer, engineer and whoever or whatever to make great msuic. From Paul B to Buddy and Michael and Elvin, the blues are colorblind. Thank God. Play on. Play on.

5 out of 5 stars BLOOMFIELD AT HIS BEST - 5000 STARS!!!.......2007-02-14

If you know about Mike Bloomfield, you have probably heard this. However, if you haven't.....be prepared for a gift...a gift from a master. During the 1960s, before Clapton hit these shores, there were two white blues guitar players: either you were a Danny Kalb or a Mike Bloomfield fan. I personally liked both of them, but Bloomfield definitely had the edge. In addition to being a blues scholar, there has never been anyone this side of Hendrix to play with so much passion. His microtonal bends and screaming leads sold more telecasters and les Pauls than a dozen magazine adds. This album was recorded shortly after he left the Butterfield band, trading his telecaster and gold top Les Paul for a beautiful sunburst. Like all the great players, Bloomfield achieved his sound with his fingers sans effects, in his case, through a pair of Fender twins pumped to full volume. His style is part Albert King, part B.B. King and part schizophrenic energy. This album, with the possible exception of the "If you love these blues"...guitar player recording, captures "bloomers" at his best. Just listen to Killing floor!! The rest of the band is also magnificent, however, for me, the highlight has always been Mike Bloomfield!! Today is Feb. 13th, two days away from the 26th anniversary of his tragic death. I will remember him by playing cut number 10 on this album. At all of 30 seconds long, "Easy Rider" captures, more than any other recording, the passion and blues knowledge of this man who was far more musically mature than his twenty something years when he recorded it. Rest in peace, Mike.

Originally released in 1968,this was Electric Flag's second effort.Basically,this is superb blues rock,as SO few bands can play it.Tunes I was most impressed with were the awesome "Killing Floor","Over-Lovin' You" (my theme song,at one time), "Sitting In Circles" and "Easy Rider". Plus, the four added bonus cuts here are good, too. Check out this album's personnel: Michael Bloomfield (R. I. P.) - guitar&vocals, Richie Havens-sitar&percussion, Buddy Miles-drums, Herbie Rich-guitar,keyboards&sax, Harvey Brooks-bass and Marcus Doubleday-trumpet. An absolute must-have.

My only complaint... 4 bonus tracks have been tacked on at the end the CD that were not on the original vinyl. It's killing me. They should have just left well enough alone. I'm sittin' here gazing at the back cover of my Columbia Stereo CS 9597 album and there are just 10 tracks. The producers of the CD don't realize that the set was complete, as is. I bought the CD anyway...

I am glad that I purchased this CD. I am a fan of the blues, and especially 60's bands that experimented with horns like The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and B S & T. I first listened to Mike Bloomfield with the release of The Supersession album with Al Kooper and Stephen Stills. I enjoy this first Electric Flag CD very much; however, it was a disappointment in a way. I expected the same Mike Bloomfield who played on Supersession and the first few Paul Butterfield albums, especially since some things I had read cited this collection of songs as the "real" blues as opposed to the Paul Butterfield sound or even B S & T's post Al Kooper albums. I am sorry but I don't agree there. I wouldn't buy this unless you are serious about blues music and the way it changed during the 60's rock era. But I am the type of fan who listens to B S & T's first album and does not believe that everything artistically ended there. Implying that is just stupid. The second album with David Clayton Thomas is a classic too, and I enjoy it every bit as much. Personally, I like different styles. This is why this album is great for me, although I felt disappointment when I first listened to it, because it isn't Mike Bloomfield at his best. For me, it didn't live up to the hype I read. Would I buy it again? Yes, for the same reason that I listen to B S & T with or without Al Kooper and for the same reason that I savor Chicago's early albums and still enjoy their new things too.

this collection sounds so new, you would think its now. these are heavy 60s musicians who once lays down magic, remains. soul in sittin' in circles. blues with goin' down slow. jazz in movie music. funk insoul searchin. and psycodelic in another country. bloomfield, buddy miles nick gravenites, barry goldberg were together the cream of the crop.if you want to travel a true passage to the late 60s and then you'll know what the fuss was all about. i am rocking as i write this , you can too....peace

I recently re-discovered Bloomfield. I sort of remembered Electric Flag, but couldn't really place the group. I says to myself, "If Bloomfield is in it,it's good." The first couple of times, I didn't like the CD, but I picked it up after about a week, and I kept listening to it. After having listened to this CD about 100 times, my opinion is that it is a flat-out masterwork.

There are straight blues ("Going Down Slow," "Texas"), with Bloomfield as good as ever. There are several enjoyable "psychedelic" selections ("Groovin' Is Easy," "She Should Have Just.")

There is a hardcore, opium den jazz cut called,"Movie Music--Improvisation." It is an instructive example of how, for a short period, heroin can enhance creativity like a Krell brain-boost. This selection cooks like a furnace of a thousand sun!

Finally, there is "You Don't Realize." Let me tell you, I don't like "soul" music or "R/B" ballad type stuff, but here is an exception. Bloomfield wrote it, and Buddy Miles--the man, Buddy Miles!--warbles it like a bob-o-link at Augusta National, late on Sunday afternoon. Another thing: Man, can Buddy Miles drum! He's a pleasure.

One more thing. Bloomfield, we love you!

I was so glad to see that there are two live tracks from the Monterey Pop Festival on this compilation. During the Byrds' set from the festival, David Crosby mentions, "If you missed Mike Bloomfield's group you're really out of it." Now I understand what he was talking about. Outstanding!

This band's few recordings did more for the state of the art than any of their contempories. I had to laugh when I read Sid Griffin's so called review. The Electric Flag were so soulful they helped inspire and shape many artists lives. I am one of those artists. Though my genre is progressive instrumental music...every time a young person asks my advice about what to listen to....this is the first CD I tell them about. You know what? Every single one of them has come back to thank me.

This is the crux of the Flag. Their third album of 1984, it followed the schizophrenic Family Man, which found the band playing bone- crushing instrumentals on one side while Henry Rollins ranted spoken-word on the other. Slip put things back together with a hammer--with new bassist Kira Roessler striking the blow. This is music of real tension, and Rollins challenges guitarist Greg Ginn for the reins all the way through. His throat-ripping rasp may win out on "Wound Up," but Ginn is simply ferocious on "Black Coffee" and "My Ghetto." I've never been the biggest fan of hardcore, but I do know a great record when I hear it. 'Slip It In' is the band's third effort that was originally released in 1984. Tunes I found myself playing a lot off here were the title track "Slip It In", the in-your-ugly-*ss-mug "Black Coffee", "Rat's Eyes", "The Bars" and the body slammin' classic "My Ghetto". This is the sort of music that lures you to drive around at 3am and smash up every mail box (the ones they have by the end of the driveway) within a two mile radius. Line-up: Henry Rollins-vocals, Greg Ginn-guitar, Kira Roessler-bass and Bill Stevenson-drums. Should appeal to most fans of Misfits, the Germs, Minor Threat and Dead Kennedys. Believe I saw guitarist Greg Ginn's post-Black Flag trio, Gone play an actual in-store appearance. Wasn't just a three song mini-set, it was like a 45 minute show that had nearby tenants calling the police. You KNOW you've had a great time when that happens. Highly recommended.

its not bad, and it certainly has a few really good songs (the title track comes to mind), but this was the begining of the end for Black Flag, and it really shows. This is the last album of theirs I would reccommend anyone buy, and its really only for people who are already big fans. If you aren't a big fan, pick up "Damedged" or "The First four years" instead.

Slip It In.

Ok, I'll admit something here. I'm perplexed how people can bash on this Flag record. Out of all the Flag albums I've heard and had at various times this is the one I come back to the most.

I recently encoded to WAV my vinyl copy I bought at Tower Records in Bellevue, WA in 1986 (oh the memories). I listened to the whole damn thing tonight while working out. I have to give it rave reviews. This album still rocks. Its almost as some other reviewers have said a mix of punk, hardcore and maybe a skosh of metal in there. I love the energy, the attitude and swagger. ( Its also a great album to do cardio to, but thats another subject.)

I think the flow of the record is great. The first three songs bust out the gate and don't slow down till Rat's Eyes. Then a brief reprieve and off you go again.

This is a long way removed from Damaged, which is great on its own. My War I can't get into as much, sludgey and the material isn't as ferocious. Plus, I don't think that album flows as well and the band doesn't seem to being into it as much.

Seems there are factions of fans who like specific angles of 'Flag. Chalk me up as one who thinks Slip It In is one of thier top tier albums. Fusing punk, hardcore, 70s hard rock and charging hard makes it thier most complete album. It does what few artists dare to do - fuse genres. It works brilliantly here.

Would recommend this and Damaged as a introduction to 'Flag.

4 out of 5 stars Makes me want to BEAT MY HEAD AGAINST THE WALL!!.......2005-12-10

I share a birth year, 1961, with Henry Rollins (as well as Doug Coupland, author of Generation X, for what it's worth; I once met Coupland, mentioned this fact to him, and had him say that he hoped some day to meet Rollins - I wonder if he ever did?). So, I have long related to Rollins as a member of my generation, more so than I might relate to Pete Townsend or Ray Davies (as much as I love them). Anyway, what's not to like about Black Flag? Here, they are in fine form, particularly on the title track, and other speedier tunes at the beginning of the record, songs like Black Coffee and Wound Up. Kira, the new bass player, does a masterful job and contributes well. Listening to the latter of these songs, Wound Up, you can't help but identify with Henry's deep, raw angst. When he let's out his id, it's cathartic for me as the listener, too.

This is great music for whenever you are feeling pissed off about something, though perhaps, after a while, you should take it off and put something else on. Otherwise, you may need to go beat your head against the wall, for tension release, as this band sang elsewhere.

"Slip it In" was an important album for me. In 1984 I sat on my friend's front lawn in Cowtown, California blasting this album from a tape deck. Needless to say the neighbors called the police who showed up and gave us a stern dressing down for playing punk rock music. Now, 21 years later I listen with the same enthusiasm I had all those years ago. Ginn's guitar work is just amazing. The solos are obviously based on his listening knowledge of free jazz, blues, and 70s hard rock. They are so skewed, so unique, that on every listen I strain to get my head around that flurry of discordant notes. Rollins is in top form, especially on "Black Coffee" (my fave) and "Wound Up." Stevenson's and Kira's rhythm section works as a heavy, driving anchor to Ginn's spasmodic playing and Rollin's shrieks of pain, alienation, and sexual darkness. This is a great album. I like everything Black Flag recorded up to this album. Keith Morris, Chavo, and Dez-era Flag cannot be ignored as well.

I am so very glad I bought this CD. I own the DVD of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and watch it all the time, so I almost didn't buy this, wondering if I really needed yet another CD.

Well, thank God I didn't pay any attention to that dumb idea!

If you love "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and Cagney, you just have to buy this soundtrack. It's like being able to take the movie with you anywhere ... it's not just the songs - as others have said - but also includes bits of Cagney's voice-overs, even the tap-dancing from the end of "Little Johnny Jones." And since the audio system in my car is better than my TV's, it all seemed even bigger, richer and better. (George M. would love that!)

I haven't been able to see this movie on TV since Turner bought it (don't get TCM), but if you've seen the movie several tims, as I have, listening to this CD is very nearly as good as watching it all the way through. (I'm so delighted with it that I'm even willing to forgive TCM for putting a paper ad inside with the disc.)

Monumental effort must have gone into this soundtrack, given the age of the original recordings. The tracks here are crisp, clear, and bright, with no evidence of how long ago they were first put down. The editors were also generous in their inclusion of dialogue that ties some of the tracks together (for example, we hear the man tell Johny Jones to watch for the skyrocket, then we hear the skyrocket as it leads into "Give My Regards to Broadway"). There are a couple of places where the endings are slightly abrupt but this is because, in the movie, the music fades into extended dialogue.

The only bit of dialogue I expected to hear in a song, but didn't, is in "Over There" near the very end of the film, when Cagney/Cohan has fallen in step with the soldiers going off to WWII, as they're singing "Over There", when the soldier nearest him says something like, "What's wrong, old timer, don't know the words?" and Cagney says, "Seems to me I do" and starts singing along. That's minor and pales next to how wonderful the rest of this soundtrack is.

One of the biggest treats on this CD is that we get to hear some of Cagney's tapping, notably in "Give My Regards to Broadway", "You're a Grand Old Flag", and - one of my favorite moments in movie history - when he dances down the White House stairs to "Yankee Doodle" near the end).

The outtake is not a humorous one, simply a track they decided not to use. It and the rehearsal tracks are all just the performers voices with piano accompaniment. I especially enjoyed hearing Cagney rehearsing "You're a Grand Old Flag".

If you like Cagney, if you like Cohan's music, if you like movies "the way they used to make them", or if you're not ashamed to get a little choked up with patriotism once in a while, you will not be disappointed in this CD!

Finally! If you own that Hollywood Soundstage abomination of the "Yankee Doodle Dandy" soundtrack you can finally pitch it. Here is the real article. Rhino (Turner Classic Movies Music) lovingly restored the music from the beloved "Yankee Doodle Dandy" motion picture starring James Cagney. This soundtrack sounds astonishing considering it's 60 years old. It's very obvious some loving care was taken in it's production for which we all should be greatful. The liner notes also are great with informative text and wonderful photos from the movie. The marvelous George M. Cohan songs gives one goosebumps and bring tears to the eyes. We all need this type of patriotic pep rally, especially in these tough times. As I've said, this soundtrack belongs in every American's home just as much as that "Grand Old Flag"! I believe there are plans to release the movie on DVD, hopefully soon.
