Unbelievably awesome!!!!.......2007-07-09
I'm not one who is much for metalcore, as I like the likes of Wintersun, Nevermore, Opeth, Antestor, and Amon Amarth, and such. In fact I was a bit hesitant to get this one, but I really love this album. I even like the screams, which normally I wouldn't. Powerful, melodic, heavy, catchy, and virtuosic. Every song has a solo, many of which are longer and relatively fast. The only downside is it is short, only 39 minutes. Other than that, perfect.
So get it!!!
Unbelievably powerful.......2007-06-17
This band is simply amazing and the best you can get in this genre. Every song on here is well-constructed from the mind-blowing guitar solos from Oli Herbert to Phil's vocals which have an enormous range. The thing about this band is that they are indeed very heavy but in my opinion it seems like every song has a sad mood to it and it is that mood that makes you want to listen over and over again. A great example of realizing this is on "Whispers(I Hear Your)" on the bridge where the guitar plays really heavy and then puts in a soft chord. As for the songs, my review for each is as follows:
1. This Calling 10/10
-Love this song it can be interpreted in so many ways and you can also easily relate it to yourself. The heavy parts are amazing with how Phil's deep screaming harmonizes perfectly with the head-banging guitar.
2. Not Alone 10/10
-A really emotional track that makes you think about the power of love and how it can heal sadness.
3. It Dwells In Me 9/10
-I thought this song is very good like the others however I didn't really see it as a standout track as it represents a theme presented throughout the album.
4. We Stand 10/10
-I love this song. The way I intrepret it is that people with anger in their hearts are often the ones whom have to stand up to the world and be strong. Cool bridge on this song as well.
5. Whispers(I Hear Your) 10/10
-In my opinion, the verse in this song is the best heavy verse in this entire album especially on account of the anticipation of the riff to come in after the acoustic intro.
6. The Weak Willed 7/10
-Personally, I'm not into Death Metal. Although, I like the acoustic parts.
7.Six 10/10
-I first heard this song on Guitar Hero 2 which is where I started to listening to All That Remains(Thank god for that). The bridge on here is irresistable the song would be completely out of place without it. The intro/outro is astonishing.
8.Become The Catalyst 10/10
-Amazing song about having passion and getting rid of the fear of losing that passion hence;("Let the fire consume me.") The chorus is really catchy and my favorite part is "I pound the walls; I shake the cage!"
9.The Air That I Breathe 10/10
-I thought it was a little odd that the two songs about failure were right after one another, but this song is really catchy. Great melodic guitar solo in this one.
10. Empty Inside 10/10
-If you don't like this song something is wrong with you! Probably my most favorite track on the cd.
11. Indictment 10/10
-The beginning riff reminds me of something from Slayer, which is obviously a good thing. To that single riff, I head-bang I never have before. The bridge gives me goosebumps. I love the guitar solo because it is more of a crazy solo rather than a melodic-type solo which is what most of the album is like.
^^Pick Up This Album^^
It's hard, it's soft, it's hard again!.......2007-06-15
I like their screaming, I like their guitars and drums. The chorus parts can get a little corny sounding at times, but I think a little variety helps give them an edge over all the sound-alikes there are out there. I love the guy that has the low scream on "The Weak Willed", its like the grim reaper yelling in your ear! I just think it sounds crazy. I love the double bass kick in the first verse of "This Calling". There's definitely some good stuff on here, it's worth a listen. If you want all screaming lyrics go elsewhere. The singing in some choruses is similar to Hoobastank's album "The Reason". The screaming is awesome, I like their vocals and Unearth's.
why do so many people like this?? .......2007-05-17
I dont know what to say about this band. I know that they're becoming pretty big but i cannot figure out why. This cd is the same cookiecutter over produced sh** that is ruining the repuatation of a great genre of music. Between the repetitive song style, the girly vocals and a lack of originality, this cd isn't even worth the time it takes to listen to it, unless you want to hear the same lame unoriginal song 11 times. I guess if you like cheesy a** copycat metalcore then its a good buy. If you dont feel like wasting your money look elsewhere. From A Second Story Window's Delenda or Nights Like These' The Faithless (I know i know victory sucks but oh well) are a good place to start if your looking to buy some cds. Oh im not 13 either im just sick of signing in.
Shadows Fall Ain't S#@T!.......2007-05-10
Of course you can't really write a review without mentioning SF, (given the history of the two bands) but give me a break, I simple can't stand Brian AT ALL. Dude sounds cheap and forgettable, as do his backing vocalists that couldn't write a catchy riff if their life depended on it. SF are nothing, I stepped in a pile of Dog crap and thought of them the other day.
ALL THAT REMAINS on the other hand are far from the pile I mentioned. I find that at anygiven time of the day, I have riffs running through my head from this new release. Not to mention that production wise this is the heaviest by far, not really too much different from the last release but it is HEAVIER-(somehow.)
As a guitarist, (which is a huge part of my beef with SF - cause again they SUCK) I find All That Remains to be on the top of their game. And the material is just honest. The stories are real and true to life, but then again SF could be, but I fall asleep before they ever get to their point.
There isn't one song on this disc that I don't love, but 1 - 2 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 9 & 11 are my favs, the rest are just my second favs.
SF is a history lesson Phil and ATR are present and FUTURE.

Excellent piece of modern metal........2007-05-09
This could be the soundtrack to an instructional video on how to headbang and mosh. For their masterpiece, check out "Ashes of the Wake". Also see "Sacrament" and "New American Gospel".
Pure American Metal.......2007-01-22
I'm giving this album a 4 out of 5 because the sound quality is pretty bad. Their recording engineer should have been fired and replaced. There is a fine line between a raw-sounding album, and a poorly recorded one. Unfortunately, this one leans more toward the poorly recorded side. But with that being said...
This is one of the best metal albums I have heard in recent years. If there is a hope for the future of American metal, it truly lies in these guys.
Unlike most of today's newer metal bands, these guys actually have very well written, intelligent, and poignant lyrics. The lyrical themes tend to be socio-political to religious in nature: the album's two closing tracks are still some of my favorites.
Vocally, their frontman is a screamer/growler (usually, I'm not a big fan of that), but he is one of the few metal frontmen who can do it well: it is easy to understand what he is saying, and his vocals don't sound cheesy or weak, as tends to be the case with other screamers of any genre.
Musically, these guys are great. Chris Adler is one of the most creative up & coming metal drummers out there. While they tend to play heavy, almost pummeling riffs, these guys cover everything from creepy down-tempo songs to thrashy up-tempo pieces, and many points in between. They're definitely much more creative than most of the new acts out ther (this review can't really do them justice).
In summation, this is a great metal album, but the recording quality is pretty poor. Thankfully it (along with the band) has improved in their next album.
Your CD collection is stupid unless it has this.......2006-11-16

Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man..........2006-09-17
What the hell is up with dude like this Brian R, A-hole who write that the Lamb are posers, man if you listen to Brittney Spears we dont expect you to appreciate the power and sheer brutality that is LoG so go back to watchin Mtv little boy and leave real metal to the Men. Now back to the review, this Cd is heavy, excellent riffs, drumming is incredibly, still not their best, listening to Ashes and Sacrament you hear maturity in the lyrics, song structures, riffs, etc, signs of greatness?, definetly. Now dont judge Sacrament by Redneck alone, sure its a bit more comercial but the rest of the album is brutal, reminds me of this album in a sense that its a bit darker and more groove oriented. highlights here include Ruin, with the drum break right in the middle urrrgghhh!!!!, 11th hour whata riff, Vigil starts of very pretty then grabs you by the balls, etc... Get this album, its a good starting point for any metal fan.
One of Lamb of God's best.......2006-06-13
I consider this Lamb of God's third studio release (with the Burn the Priest album being their first). I've owned this cd for a long time, but didn't decide to write a review until now. This cd acts a nice bridge between the very raw New American Gospel and the more accessible Ashes of the Wake.
Lamb of God guitarists Willie Adler and Mark Morton really shine here, presenting the listener with a diverse variety of riffs. Drummer Chris Adler and bassist John Campbell always make solid deliveries and vocalist Randy Blythe screams, croaks, and growls his way through this 10 track, 38 minute cd.
The opener, "Ruin", aside from being one of Lamb of God's best songs ever, really engages the listener to the mood and feel of the album. "As the Palaces Burn" is a great follow-up, though a bit on the short side. "11th Hour" is unique from the rest, and offers a blindlingly fast guitar-drum give and take towards the end of the song. "For Your Malice" is slower with a chugging riff style, and manages to be very heavy and interesting. "Blood Junkie" lyrically sounds like it belongs more on New American Gospel, and is a nice change-up. The final track, "Vigil", is a very important song not just for the album but for the band's musical development. It starts off sounding like it's going to be a ballad and explodes into typical Lamb of God style. It builds until the end, and is probably the best constructed song on the album, ending it perfectly.
Overall, this isn't as accessible as Ashes of the Wake, not as raw as the Burn the Priest album, and is very solid all-around.

What the hell happened?.......2006-08-07
I dont get it. I just dont get it. This album should have been the one to break All That Remains out from the underground, but it doesnt. They still remained one of the metalcore scene's lesser known bands, and Phil Labonte's old band, Shadows Fall, outsold them, 10 to 1.
Whoever slept on this album has no idea what they missed. The Riffs are heavy, the vocals pissed and nasty, the lyrics angry and sorrrowfull at the same time, every thing that has come to characterize the metalcore scene, but still, this band went unnoticed. OPEN YOUR EARS PEOPLE!!! Stop listening to second rate bands, and pick up this album, and Their new one, "The Fall Of IDEALs" and be prepared to be blown away!
Good album - All That Remains displays emense potential to be a force within metal.......2006-05-03
There seems to be much debate as of recent over the use of the term "metalcore" in describing numerous bands sharing a sound within that particular genre. There appears to be some growing animosity between those who embrace the genre (and the label attached to it) and those who believe the more extreme metalcore bands are better described as thrash/speed metal. For the purposes of simplicity, I'll refer to All That Remains as a metalcore band in my review, as they display many elements characteristic of the genre in their most recent album "This Darkened Heart."
With "This Darkened Heart," All That Remains manages to deliver a powerful album displaying some innovative songwriting ability, as well as some fairly catchy songs. However, make no mistake about it, despite the catchy nature of some of the songs, "This Darkened Heart" is brutal album delivered with an in-genre intensity matched only by the likes of metalcore giants Lamb of God and Killswitch Engage. The highlights of the album include:
(a) The vocals. Clearly, Philip Labonte's vocals are the stand-out feature of "This Darkened Heart." Labonte sings with an intensity that comes from a place that I imagine would make most people cringe in fear. Far from the typical metalcore scream, his vocal style resembles a more guttural growl (without ever approaching the styling of death metal vocals). Perhaps most impressive, is the fact that Labonte doesn't appear to be "trying too hard" when he is singing/screaming. Rather, his screams appear to be unforced and natural, which is an unusual quality within the metalcore genre, as many vocalists sound as though they are tearing through their vocal cords as they force the most extreme screams within their ability (not that I mind this, I rather like it, but I have my concerns for their longevity as singers, as their vocal cords are undoubtedly sustaining heavy damage). Nonetheless, the vocals serve to lift "This Darkened Heart" above the level of a mediocre album. In addition, Labonte's voice allows All That Remains to retain an element of distinctiveness in their sound, allowing them to be distinguishable from other similar bands.
(b) The songwriting. "This Darkened Heart" displays a fairly amazing degree of songwriting ability. In addition, All That Remains prove that they are indeed excellent musicians. Though I wouldn't quite place the songwriting on "This Darkened Heart" on the level of "Ascendency" by Trivium, it is nonetheless an excellent album. Furthermore, "This Darkened Heart" seems to hint that even better albums lie ahead for All That Remains.
(c) The overall sound of the album. It should come as no surprise that the sound of the album is somewhat reminiscent of other metalcore bands in terms of its sound (i.e., guitar sound). However, the production is solid, and the musicianship is of a high quality. This is not an album that is repetitive, nor is it one that the listener will likely become bored with.
Despite being a good album, "This Darkened Heart" does have its flaws. Perhaps most noteworthy (and this is ironic giving Labonte's excellent abilities as a vocalist), is the fact that there are moments in the album where the vocals are absolutely horrid. The most notable of this occurs on "Focus Shall Not Fail" where Labonte abandons his deep and powerful guttural vocal style that seems to come so natural in favor of a more high- pitched scream/squeal that is almost painful to hear. It is unclear to me exactly why this vocal style was utilized here, as every other aspect of the song is brilliant (especially the clear vocals which make up the song's chorus). It is during this lone moment in the album that I am left with the thought that "this song sounds generic" (i.e., like any "typical" metalcore band). The only other flaw that I found on the album is an inconsistent quality in the songwriting. Despite having excellent songs, "This Darkened Heart" has its share of songs that the listener will likely skip over.
Overall, this is an essential album to own if you are a fan of metalcore (or thrash/speed metal if you prefer). In addition, I feel confident that All That Remains will continue to grow and expand, and will likely be one of the bands standing once the metalcore genre has faded in popularity.
This is metal, no question about it.......2006-03-26
I have to make something clear. Breakdowns do not mean metalcore. They are an essential part of metalcore, but metal bands do them too. With that said, This Darkened Heart is a full fledged metal album. From the acoustic bit that opens the album, to the thrashy title track at the end, it contains buzzsaw riffs, tight drumming, and well-crafted soloing. A big reason this band is passed off as metalcore is because of the vocals. They do resemble that metalcore style, but the music speaks for itself. If you like straight-up metal, do yourself a favor and buy this record.
THIS IS METAL!!!.......2006-02-13
I wish people would stop using the term metalcore to describe this band. I don't care what anybody say's be it fans or the band itself. This is METAL in all of it's glory. metalcore is what I use to describe bands that couldn't hold these guys guitar picks. They use all of the great metal atmosphere from bands before them, early Slayer, and Max lead Sepultura! just to name acouple. A friend of mine who lived in Washington D.C. was raving about these guys and when he came back he let me listen to this album and instantly I became a huge fan!!!
One of the best .......2006-02-07
This is a great album. Melodic, crushing riffage mixed with nice acoustic guitars and piano segments making it feel like a concept album. This band is WAY better then shadows fall.

No rip-offs here........2007-03-06
This is the band I've been waiting for. Black Tie Dynasty bring a new twist on indie rock with their latest effort. I've heard way too many Coldplay and U2 rip-offs in the last few years, but BTD bring their own sound into a seemingly overcrowded genre. I think this band has some staying power.
Great Band.......2007-02-19
Excellent album. I consider their sound a mixture of Coldplay and Depeche Mode. I also got a chance to see them in concert and they put on a great show. Check out their myspace page to sample their music.
better with age.......2007-02-14
your first time with BTD Movements, you'll notice allusions to Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Coldplay, Soft Cell, U2, etc. your second time with BTD Movements, these influences begin to recede. your third time with BTD Movements, you realize it is a unique and amazing piece of work, and that the only relation it has to the aforementioned greats is that it can stand up among them.

George Shearing could sell a tune without even trying--and that's no small feat !!!.......2007-06-28
George Shearing entertained countless people in the twentieth century with his excellent piano playing; his blindness never discouraged him. Not only is he a hero for enriching our lives with his fine work; his artistry provides an excellent example for younger emerging artists to study so that they can better themselves.
The CD is a "two-fer" CD; this means that we get all the tracks from two of George Shearing's record albums: Black Satin and White Satin. Awesome!
The CD track set begins with the ten tracks from Black Satin. "The Folks Who Live On The Hill" gives us a perfect beginning to the CD. The lush musical arrangement sounds so smooth; this is easy music at its very best with an emphasis on George's piano playing. The arrangement makes good use of the strings and percussion to evoke a pensive yet soothing mood for "The Folks Who Live On The Hill."
"If I Should Lose You" continues in the same vein only now we hear a Latin beat added to the overall arrangement. The piano gets more of the spotlight, too. Grab your sweetheart, jump up and start dancing--this is the perfect music to dance to! "Black Satin" oozes sophistication with yet another classic ballad being molded to fit within the Latin rhythms of the day. Excellent! The strings enhance the quality of "Black Satin," too. "Nothing Ever Changes My Love" uses many of the same techniques employed by the song "Black Satin." Roll up the rug and start dancing, folks! That Latin beat with its trademark percussion from the late 1950s and the early 1960s always moves me. These arrangements by Billy May and George Shearing shine like gold.
"Moon Song" begins with a dramatic flourish by the strings; and George Shearing comes in with a beautiful piano arrangement for "Moon Song." "Moon Song" is remarkably romantic, pensive and sensitive all at once. George's flawless piano playing during the middle of this number showcases his talent. What a lush arrangement overall, too. The CD track set for the record album entitled Black Satin ends with the upbeat, bouncy and somewhat spicy medley of "As Long As I Live/Let's Live Again." What a joyous tune for the ending of this set! The strings complement George Shearing's piano playing to perfection; and I like how they use the drums.
We then get all the numbers from another George Shearing album entitled White Satin. White Satin literally bursts at the seams with romantic numbers; and the beginning track entitled "Your Name Is Love" sets this tone right away. The flutes are well used in this arrangement as Billy May conducts the number. "Dream," a well known classic love ballad, gets the royal treatment by Shearing, May and the rest of the crew. They perform "Dream" with passion and style. George's piano playing is nicely showcased in "Dream," too. Great! The ballad "Laura" comes from the movie of the same name; and you won't need any lyrics to this number to experience the thoughtful and somewhat melancholy mood of this number. George's piano runs parallel to the percussion; this creates a lush, romantic effect that makes "Laura" an instant highlight of this album.
"How Long Has This Been Going On" starts with a great horn introduction; and when the band and George on piano come in the full romantic effect of this instrumental ballad really shines. This is easy listening music that even royalty couldn't resist! They also slow down the usual tempo just a bit to embellish this great number. "Love's Melody" relies on the strings and the piano to carry the bulk of the melody; and this works well.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. "I'll Take Romance" ends the CD--and the second record album entitled White Satin--with a distinctly upbeat tone that leaves you wanting more. The infectiously catchy melody makes good use of the piano as the strings and percussion enhance the number. "I'll Take Romance" works on several levels at once; and therefore this number makes for a strong ending to this CD.
The liner notes give you the song credits and chart debut dates for the record albums Black Satin and White Satin. I would have liked an essay but this is a minor disappointment.
George Shearing's remarkable talent glistens on every single track on this fine CD; and he will remain a force in the entertainment world for quite some while to come. I recommend this CD for fans of George Shearing; and people who enjoy easy listening with an occasional Latin beat thrown in will always enjoy this CD.
Thank you, George!
Easy to like with a good blend of Easy and some Latin tempos.......2006-11-26
Over an hour of solid Shearing with the first 10 Numbers emphasizing the Quintet, and the next 12 (White Satin) giving more emphasis to the whole Orchestra. One great song is #15 entitled "Old Folks". For such a wonderful musical number, I wonder what the Lyrics might be? 5 duplicates from other Albums, but all good ones, and all told 4 Latin tempos. A very good mix of two Shearing stylings is a real winner.
George Shearing and strings: a sound like no other.......2006-04-02
Having received a faux-antique record player as a Christmas present, and eager to try out my new toy, I purchased both "Black Satin" and "White Satin" as LPs from a used book store. The lush orchestral arrangements, coupled with the distinctive Shearing piano-vibraphone melody, took my breath away. The opening song, "The Folks Who Live On The Hill", best represents this combination, offering the listener a beautiful partnership of Shearing's interpretation and the background of strings that support ably the haunting mood of the song. "Black Satin", a Latin-based melody with plenty of swing, leaves the listener wanting more. Another song with a Latin theme is "Blue Malibu". The percussion, combined with the harmonic patterns from Shearing's piano, take you to a sunny beach overlooking blue waters and white sands. From sexy to introspective, the songs of this compilation will lift your spirits. Truly timeless music!
George Shearing's Black and White Satin.......2004-10-07
This set of productions by George Shearing was put together for their similar sounds and if you listen to these 22 songs and try to figure out which songs belong to what production, it would be a pretty hard task. The combination of Shearing's beautiful piano and the strings behind the music make this a pleasant and relaxing CD to listen to. Compared to other Shearing productions, these two collections give the listener a more sensitive and mellow sound which makes it perfect for a late rainy night.
A song that stands out from this collection is the melodious "Moon Song." This track, although just over two minutes, has so much music that it will make you listen to it over and over again. The most interesting part of this song is the dramatic ending which goes back to the intro of the song but this time more mysterious and haunting. Another song that will draw your attention is the popular standard "Laura." From all the versions that I have heard this is by far the best of them. Similar to "Moon Song," the ending of "Laura" comes back to the main melody but takes an unexpected turn to give it a happy ending. The sounds of this track give me the impression that if there is a "Laura", she is a lovely woman.
Although there are no lyrics in these productions, I think these sounds give the listener one thousand things to talk about, like it did for me.
I enjoy listening to George Shearing because his music is very rich in melody and his solos represent him as a great pianist. Whether he plays with his quartet or with an orchestra in the background, Shearing shows that he is versatile at different sounds.
Other artists that I listen to along with Shearing are Bill Evans, and Eliana Elias to name a few. From other Shearing albums that I own, I would definitely recommend his Christmas production: "Christmas with the George Shearing Quintet."
Easy listening, rather than jazz in these old LP's..........2003-07-06
Beautiful music, but best for background sounds, is my take on these two Capitol LP's. Razor & Tie put them together on CD in 1998, but "Black Satin" was a 1957 release, and "White Satin" came along in 1960. Both have orchestra backing, which diminishes the jazz feel for Shearing's always superb piano work. While the booklet credits "The George Shearing Quintet & Orchestra" for "Black", no players are named. Since Billy May did the arrangements, however, one might assume he also provided the other musicians. On the "White" album, three years later, May is credited with "conducting" the orchestra. Out of the 22 tracks, only two are written by George. The rest are a mixture of standards and now-obscure songs. I love Shearing, but I like him best with a quartet or quintet. His solo albums and his orchestra-backed works tend to be pretty, but a bit dull. Still, there are moments on this disc which are compelling, including his rendition of the Gershwin's classic "How Long Has This Been Going On?" A naughty bonus, for its era: The original cover of "White Satin" is reproduced as the back cover insert in this reissue. It features a redheaded woman in an open-front white dress, semi-reclining in an inviting pose. Tame by the standards of rap music videos, but quite daring for 1960.

Aloof and detached.......2004-04-14
This 1993 album is an ambitious project that does not come across as cohesive but contains some great songs. In overall sound, it reminds me of Young Americans but it is even more detached, like his plastic soul style carried to the extreme.
It opens with the semi-instrumental The Wedding, a beautiful lilting melody which is followed by You've Been Around, a song that doesn't go anywhere. The funky texture of I Feel Free makes it a worthy cover and the title track, a duet with Al B Sure, is quite engaging with its complex arrangement.
Jump They Say, Pallas Athena and Nite Flights, the Scott Walker cover, are all interesting but not really emotionally appealing. I like Miracle Goodnight with its rhythmic and vocal variety but the jazzy ballad Don't Let Me Down sounds unfocused and messy. Looking For Lester is a lively jazz instrumental and The Wedding Song is a vocal reprise of the stylish opening track.
The problem with Black Tie, White Noise, is that although pleasant to listen to, the music does not remain with you for long. With a few exceptions like the two Wedding Songs, the songs are not memorable. I recommend this album only to hardcore fans or Bowie completists.
Hummmmmm It is David Bowie.......2004-01-01
This is an album that needs to grow on someone. The album is filled with catchy and not so catchy jazz sounds. The song that attracted me to this album was "They Say Jump". Not every song was modeled after this track. I still enjoyed the album and it follows the trendy production stylings of Nile Rodgers (also produced "Cosmic Thing" From the B52s and an member of the 70's group Chic) This was an album that displayed alot of brass horn parts. The bad thing about the horns, they are the jazziness tones that polute the album. Although, I do respect David Bowie for this wondering in genres and I feel this makes him one of the most versital artist in the last 30 years. I don't think that the soul and jazz of the 90's really fit him. The duet with Al B Sure(Black Tie White Noise), which at the time was a million dollar artist, was not a match made in heaven.
In contrast,There is some good tracks on this album the wonderfully done instrumental "The Wedding" was one of the songs the jazz feel worked well with. "They Say Jump" is a wonderfully lyrically rebelous track and one of my favorite Bowie songs.
This album also contains a flowing mellowness that is really quite relaxing. This album was not all bad but not his best. Much like most artist, the songs are hit and miss. Some tracks where made to be a single and some wasn't.
love bowie - hate this album.......2003-10-21
buy Bowie's Outside or something earlier. This one stinks.
Black Tie White Noise.......2003-08-24
Great later Bowie. This album came out in 1993. Proof that his musical tastes and skills are varied and eclectic.
One Fine Wedding Gift.......2003-06-17
David wrote this album as a wedding gift to his bride Iman, and he does a masterful job here. This album shows him shaking off the 80's and the Tin Machine project for good, and re-collaborating with longtime associates Mick Ronson and Mike Garson (Spiders era). In his return to solo recording, he continues to play with electronica and newer sounds, and also utilizes his saxophone extensively for an almost jazzy feel throughout. Although not nearly as ambitious as its follow up "Outside", its easy to see in retrospect how BTWN pointed his muse in that direction.
There are several standout cuts on the disc, the most well known of them being "Jump They Say", which also appears on his greatest hits collections. Other great Bowie originals on the disc include the title track, "The Wedding Song", "You've Been Around" and "Miracle Goodnight". He also performs several quality covers, including a version of Cream's "I feel free", Scott Walker's "Nite Flights" and "Don't Let Me Down and Down" penned by Tarha/Valmont. There are 14 tracks total on the disc if you include the bonus version of "Jump They Say", and not a bad one among them.
Overall, "Black Tie White Noise" heralded David's return to the studio, and finds him contented with his life and ready to continue a brilliant recording career. For some reason that I can't fathom this disc is currently out of print, so if you're lucky enough to find it used I strongly reccomend picking yourself up a copy.

I'm being generous here.......2006-06-28
I'm a huge Bowie fan, and buy into the idea that most of his 90's and 21st century works have restored his artistic credibility to a large degree. In brief, BTWN made me grateful that he returned to solo work, albeit I was more than a wee bit scared as his prior solo works included the non-plusses 'Tonight' and 'Never Let Me Down.' Plus, unlike most Bowie fans, I loved the first Tin Machine record, appreciating it for what it was - a bit fat detonation of his post 'Scary Monsters' work.
So...why three stars? Well, I'm guilty, but I like the re-mix disc - yes, superfluous, but fun. And the record itself? It contains several extraordinary tracks - 'You've Been Around', 'I Feel Free', the title track (well, a tad below extraordinary, and now sounding dated), 'Jump They Say', 'Nite Flights' and the utterly disturbing 'Pallas Athena' - so you have 6 great songs from the proper record's 12.
As for the remaining record - well, the Morrissey cover is OK, but several of the other tracks really should be stomped and buried.
I do wish, if he decides to tour again, he'd revisit some of the above-mentioned extraordinary tracks live.
Refined Funk with a Twist of Klimt.......2006-03-28
This album contains some of Bowie's better compositions and expands on the sound he put forth on Station to Station. While this album lacks the stark purity of Station to Station, which had only six songs, it utilizes much of the same tight, syncopated rhythms, juxtaposed to drawn out melodies. This technique achieves it's crowning success on "Pallas Athene," where the melody soars like a bottle rocket over the jabs and hooks of the rhythms. Also, Bowie knows how to organize this stuff better than a lot of other musicians, so you have the abstractions and the "noise" leading you somewhere.
Other great songs are "Night Flights," "Don't Let Me Down" and "Looking for Lester," among others. Some of the songs are overproduced but Bowie inserts his trademark epiphanies and they work.
The orchestrations are superb, with Lester Bowie's trumpet playing truly out of sight. Bowie's much talked about sax playing is of interest to me, not so much for the quality of the musicianship, but for the quality of the sound. He runs it through synthesizers that make it sound more like Jimi Hendrix than a saxophone. The best use of this technique is on "I Feel Free," another great song that plays the guitar-sounding sax off of real guitars to produce unbelievable levels of catharsis.
As with all good "black" music, the point is that the emotionally injured person refuses to go down, no matter how many shots to the head, and this has more to do with one's experience than it does with one's race. It's good to have David Bowie in your corner. It doesn't hurt to have some of "Jimi's guitar sound" ("Scary Monsters") in the music.
The Klimt reference in the title of my review refers to "Pallas Athene," also the title of one of Gustav Klimt's paintings of a femme fatale. Though the song doesn't connect with this theme as far as I can see, Bowie has referenced femme fatales before on "Outside" and "Ziggy" I think and he likes to remind you, you know.
Well, It's Certainly Better Than Any Clarence Clemons Album!.......2005-11-05
For the first time in his career, Bowie has made an album that relies as much on his sax playing as it does on his vocals, and the results are promising. At its release, Black Tie, White Noise comes on the heels of Bowie's most uninspired work in decades, perhaps ever, so this collection is notable in that it marks a rather obvious turn towards something more inspired. It's still odd, though, even for Bowie, especially since it contains a great deal of funk-based instrumentals. Bowie shares production duties here with Nile Rodgers, his able assistant for the highly successful "Let's Dance" album, but they do not lean on any of their techniques from that album, instead creating something entirely different. As expected, Rodgers brings the funk, which serves as the fundamental basis for the entire album. That leaves Bowie to provide the flavoring, so he adds plenty of Middle Eastern spice, along with some skewed, contemporary sounding riffs.
Bowie stretches out on Black Tie White Noise, allowing his sax to take center stage on many of the album's arrangements. Bowie's saxophone playing has been both underutilized and under-appreciated, but this album corrects any misperceptions about his playing. His tone is clear, and his riffing is both imaginative and enjoyable. Granted, he is no jazz master, but his playing does surpass the typical honking associated with most rock and roll sax playing.
Although the album never quite gels into anything cohesive, it does contain some interesting moments. At the top of that list is a searing, funky cover of Cream's "I Feel Free," where Bowie provides the song with a solid rhythm that the original version lacked. "Miracle Goodnight" is built around a simple but engaging hook that playfully toys with the dance rhythm that percolates underneath, suggesting `no-wave' pop/jazz at its finest. Also notable is "Looking For Lester," a reference to trumpeter Lester Bowie (no relation), who is prominently featured here, but it may also be a sly reference to saxophonist Lester Young, since Bowie wails unabashedly and coaxes some very interesting (sonically treated) tones from his instrument in the process. The biggest problem here, though, is a lack of variety. The dance-based rhythms are relentless and start to wear down, especially since the production is extremely dense and heavy, suggesting the most annoying aspects of Rodgers' affiliation with Robert Palmer and Duran Duran. The solution is to excerpt the best songs for a personal mix tape, since most will spring to life when removed from the context of the entire album. B Tom Ryan
Real Soul: Putting on the black tie/blocking out the white noise........2005-10-27
I have issues with some of the reviews for this album, as I find them unqualified and misleading in reference to the work of David Bowie, when they criticize. I particularly wonder at the fans who didn't understand the DVD edits. Yea! Sound+Vision.
First, I am a fan since Hunky Dory (1971 when I was 17 years old). And still, Hunky Dory is my favorite Bowie Album, because no matter what shape he assumes, this Bowie is always there in vocal styling and spirit. Other manifestations of the chameleon seem fragmentary by comparison. The simple melodies and strong lyrics (with the soul of an English bard) summarize all that I feel is best about Bowie. Hunky Dory may be considered primitive to some, but it is simply masterful to me.
Now about soul: Is this a color? or heart? or feeling? This man's soul is as real as Eminem's, Kenneth Edmund's, Sinatra's, Puccini's, or Mary J. Blige's, etc., etc. None of these artistes are fakes, manufactured by a studio or management team.
However, I believe David feels Black Tie/White Noise is his best work. He says it was inspired by the 90s L.A. riots. And that Caucasians deal with "people of color" by expecting them to "become" more white, or just completely ignoring them. I live in L.A., and I agree with this assessment. This city is very insular. In contrast, Tampa, Florida (my hometown) is predominately Republican, but has stronger, truer racial integration. Go figure. David is trying to give back to black music, which he credits as his greatest inspiration. Some "fans" who don't know that David's soul is not plastic but, rather, flesh and blood, probably have never accepted and can never accept his wife Iman, or their marriage. She is definitely his black tie and proof of his soul. He was wed to Angela for 12 or so months. Wed to Iman "forever."
The DVD is edited in a way meant to seduce the viewer into the action, by means of rhythm, color, graceful elegance, and camera technique-----Performance Art. It may seem like a maelstrom, but give it time, and you'll go with the flow, and like it, or end with a migraine. This is considered the MTV style of video editing, (meant to emulate/stimulate the minds of precocious 13 year olds), and it works for me. Do you remember when you were thirteen (barring oppressed households). How the world seemed like your oyster? And you had imagination? Black Tie/White Noise videos have this quality. He is as good as or even better than Mick Jagger in being forever young. Watching this DVD makes me feel extraordinarily young.
I find the package to be a work of art itself. It is a paper box that folds out and houses 2 jewel boxes. If you keep all your CDs in precisely measured slots, this box set will not fit. It is the same height and length of a regular jewel box, but the depth is about 2.5 times larger. Height, length, and width as follows: (126 mm x 143 mm x 25 mm) or (5" x 5.625" x 1"). I have a CD tower whose slots each house 13 standard jewel boxes standing upright, as if on a bookshelf. With this on the shelf, only 12 disks will fit in a slot. This set is roughly the size of 2.5 boxes combined, not a big deal. The set folds out in the center like a book, into 2-panels, with the original CD and liner notes (printed info on package) on the left, and the Bonus CD/DVD and liner notes on the right. Then, it opens yet again on both sides to reveal a 4-panel spread that looks like a banner advertisement of the words "David Bowie: Black Tie White Noise," in white/orange/black coloring. While closed and held right-side up, both disks can be slid out the right side of the package, as if it were a regular sleeve housing a standard jewel box. Hey, you can always just take the 2 regular-sized jewel boxes out of the paper box. In my opinion, the total package is as idiosyncratic as the action in the DVD, and both are well designed. Truly, a collector's item.
To fans, Bowie is known equally a visual artist as a musician. I was almost expecting not to like this DVD/album set based on some fan's reviews. He is an artiste no matter what. Moreover, the DVD interviews cut from one to another rapidly so as to convey the mood of the album or the man himself, in a minimum of words. Did you ever think that maybe this is how he lives? Jet set, creative, international traveler; he is all this. His and Mick Jagger's lives have the vitality of teenaged boys.
It's like Beyonce asking in "Lose My Breath" from Destiny Fulfilled, "Can you keep up?"
I'm so sure this man is extraordinary, and no regular guy is ever going to figure him out. Maybe, we can study him, if our pride does not prevent this. I did not need for him to explain every detail to me. Thus, the style of taking sentences from several different topics and splicing them together as a whole, will force you into using all your senses to understand. Many will feel that he never quite "tells his story completely or clearly," and they never fully come to understand the man, his repertory, or what he is trying to say/show.
I say this, then, just look, listen, and look again, if need be. Let your feelings do the explaining. And if you still need for Bowie to tell you what he had for breakfast on March 3, 1999 (an arbitrary date), then the chameleon successfully escaped you, according to plan. The nature of a chameleon is to escape danger.
By accepting Bowie's art (practically unconditionally) without wanting to change anything, you might become a real Bowie fan, who can rock, swing, bump, and grind right along with him and never miss a beat.
Fan, I say. Not patron. I'm forever a Bowie FAN-AT-IC. This Limited Edition album is like a "rush of blood" to my head, and it renews my spirit for avant-garde music.
Good album.......2005-05-19
If you're open-minded enough to like such diverse Bowie offerings as Never Let Me Down, Young Americans, and Tonight, you'll like Black Tie White Noise.
Hear Bowie combining elevator jazz, dance beats, and pop songs structures. Listen to Bowie's dissonant saxophone (supposedly playing middle eastern tonalities) clash with funky bass lines. Listen to forboding, fractured lyrics imbue tired arrangments with new meaning.
A good pastiche.
Some of the extra tracks (especially Lucy Can't Dance) are fun, and the bonus DVD is worth watching. It's especially entertaining to watch Bowie defend his "heterosexuality."

Product Description
Hailing from the Steel City Pittsburgh, PA's Black Tie Revue gelled as a band in 2005. This incredible pop band includes elements of The Records, The Yum Yums, The Velvet Underground and The Cars in their original catchy tunes and are proudly young and geeky. They play addictively hooky, flagrantly irresponsible three-chord power-pop songs, with loud guitars, new-wave keyboards, sing-along harmonies, and a whole lot of jumping around.

Finally the long awaited album is here.......2007-06-11
I can't tell you how long I have been waiting for this album. Awhile ago I was told that this album would be released in the fall, but that was 2005. Anyways, the saying goes "Good things come to those who wait," and even though I, like many other fans, had quite a lengthy wait, I can honestly say that it was well worth it. If you want to spin something that is unadulterated pure fun from beginning to end, then look no further than this CD. This CD is guaranteed to get your feet tapping, body moving, and instantaneously lift your spirits. The only, and I mean only, problem I have with this CD is the album cover, which I fear may deter someone new looking into this band, but let me assure you that the cover, in no way shape or form is a representation of what is on the disc.

Brilliant album lost in the shuffle.......1999-01-24
This is certainly Bowie's best post-Scary Monsters album. It is a Nile Rogers production, who did such a good job making the superpolished "Let's Dance," but here Bowie is mixing the chic dance music Rogers perfected with Chic with the noise-rock of his later albums. Check it out!
And so the Wedding Bells Chime..........1998-11-15
This is the BEST David Bowie CD I have next to 1987's "Never Let Me Down", which was a total flop! But this one is A LOT better...you must admitt that it is!!! :)
Up beat with style and substance ,Bowies on top of it........1998-09-28
This is a great Bowie dance album, its innovative and up beat. He's in fine form, his voice is smooth the collaberations workand the messages are clear. It's fun ! This is a great album to clean your room to.
A terrific, unaffected jazz/pop/soul pureé.......1998-09-27
The thing that strikes me most about this misunderstood CD is Bowie's surprisingly great sax playing throughout. I remember really disliking this when it was first released for it's blatant jazz fusion and '90s soul sounds. Times and tastes change, and while I still love "Hunky Dory" and "Scary Monsters" as much as ever, I've come to realize that Bowie had created a masterpiece that no one wanted to hear...at the time.

Toshi rocks! While fusing the soul-stirring spirit of gospel with the folkier strains of social conscience, the expansively ebullient Reagon and ace producer Craig Street (Cassandra Wilson, Joe Henry) have forged a fresh sound that is both contemporary and beyond category. "Mountain Top" and "Ballad of the Broken Word" suggest Tracy Chapman as an Indigo Girl, but such an equation fails to account for the irresistibly engaging pop of "Slippin' Away" and "The Ones Who Love You," the rock propulsion of "I Hate/I Love," and the languid, intimate transformation of the Cars' "Just What I Needed" (in stripped-down duet with Marc Anthony "Chocolate Genius" Thompson). Reagon's vocal warmth throughout reflects a big heart, while her razor-sharp band cuts a series of indelible grooves. Reagon's musical development continues to honor her familial legacy (mother Bernice Johnson Reagon is Sweet Honey in the Rock's matriarch; godmother Toshi Seeger is Pete Seeger's wife), but here she's claiming some artistic turf that is all her own. --Don McLeese

Gotta have it!.......2005-02-28
I heard this album about a year ago from a friend who is a prolific music collector (I'm NOT). It grabbed me immediately and every track seemed better that the last. I had never heard of this artist and I have no idea why she is not a major superstar yet. Maybe because she doesn't look like Sheryl Crow. At any rate, I decided I had to have this CD and it is still one of my favorites. Toshi has an amazing voice, along with some great harmonies. The sound is very unique, but not challenging to listen to. "Slippin' Away" is a great track, and the cover of the Cars "Just What I Needed" was a nice surprise.

I'd never heard of Toshi Reagon before a friend passed on this CD to me. It was nice to find such a great singer with so much new music for me! I've since picked up a couple of CDs and I am in love. She's got a great big wonderful voice that fills you up to the brim. Give the samples for "Big Love" and "Mountain Top" a try. You'll be glad you did.

Toshi Reagon and Big Lovely ROCK.......2002-08-29
I saw Toshi and Big Lovely at the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival in August and they were my favorite band of the festival. I danced the entire time they played and was completely mesmerized by their strong, contemporary, rocking, and unique sound. I was completely impressed and that is why I searched for their new cd to purchase. If you love rock, funk, soul, blues, you will love Toshi Reagon and Big Lovely.
