4 out of 5 stars heck-a-slammin.......2000-04-25

with negative, empty, degrading images of gangsta life, promiscuous sex, and unabashed materialism permeating the thematic expression of nearly every facet of hip-hop music, it is so refreshing to hear a group of positive brothas, bringing empassioned, thoughtful, energetic rap music to the scene. utopia state's "where y'all from?" is like a breathe of fresh air. stylistically similar to a tribe called quest (miss y'all! ) and the roots, the u-state boys deliver a unique brand of hip-hop--sophisticated beats and thought provoking lyrics, laced with southern flava. the tracks on this one are mad tight and the lyrical content is creative, clever and positive. i particularly like the groovy vibed out licks in "summshitthree3" (that's MY song!) and "summshitfour4". and i really dig the infectious base line in "alone in tha zone." "chocolate sistahs," a sultry tribute to the unsurpassed sublimity of black women is a favourite among most u-state fans. the coolest thing about this cd is its diversity; there's something here for everyone. it's hip-hop, jazzy, groovy, funked out, full of soul and as his Royal Badness once said, "heck-a-slammin!"

4 out of 5 stars "heck-a-slammin".......2000-04-10

in this great age of innovation, creativity and technological advance, i find it both astounding and disheartening that it is so difficult to find exceptional music. yet occasionally, i have the good fortune to stumble upon music that is inspired, motivating and honest, a genuine expression of the musical aesthetic. such have i found in utopia state's second release, "where y'all from?" as a long time fan of hip-hop that "moves me," i was delighted to see some homeboys from "da ville" produce a collection of material that is just plain good. these brothas deliver lyrics that inspire listeners to challenge the way "it" is, and like the name utopia, aspire to the way it ought to be. my personal favorite is #6, summshittthree3, which, with it's grovvy keyboard line, is reminiscent of tribe called quest. i also dig #7 (very mellow and very grovvy), and #15. most other people really dig "chocolate sistahs", which is a funked out tribute to the deliciously multi-dimensional black woman. one of the best things about this CD is that with 16 songs, there's something for EVERYBODY, jazz, reggae, hip-hop, spoken word, even a gangsta-style track for you hot boyz and girlz. check this one out; you won't be sorry.

I dig it! These guys have skills. And they concentrate on positive vibes throughout. If you really listen to the lyrics you hear vocabulary that you won't find on many other hip-hop records. They rhyme phrases like "pentium processors" and "Carriable like malaria through mosquitos to peoples." Heady stuff. The tracks are just plain funky! My favorites are "ALONE-N-THAZONE," "Tha Key" and the haunting "Death of Sam." This is not music for the simple minded. It does take some brain power to hear where they are coming from, but all you need is a behind to feel the power of the music.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent, real hip-hop lyrics, phat phat PHAT BEATS!.......1999-11-05

Utopia State has put together a "thinking person's" hip-hop album. The lyrics are high quality, and very different than the majority of stuff out today. They actually have something insightfull to say about the present condition of the world and the people in it. These bothas are deep! Their style is reminiscent of A Tribe Called Quest meets Outkast, meets P-Funk, meets Sting meets Marvin Gaye! The album is very eclectic. There are elements of everything from Rock to Hip-hop to Soul to Ambient. The album is also very well produced, and is every bit as sonically bangin' as any major release. Good job! Hip-hop lives in Nasville. I've been rockin' this in my truck for weeks. Plenty of nice BOOM! If you want something that bounces, bumps, enlightens, and grooves, do yourself a favor and get this disc. It's worth the wait.

Peace. -Dj Cool Rev
