Mislead
181.4 Magazine July 1999, Torn Skin - Mislead
On first glance of their "Mislead" EP, Torn Skin looks like any other run-of-the-mill industrial band, from a vaguely gory name to oddly mildly grotesque cover art. On first listen, however, it's apparent that Torn Skin throws a couple of wrenches into the works of the ol' industrial mill. First of all, despite their potential downer names the songs "Mislead","Addiction" and "Shame", don't fall into the clich I-suck-and/or-the-world-sucks or I-hate-you-but-why-do-you-hate-me that too many industrial songs fit. Take the example of these lyrics from "Addiction": "I call for you to set me free/Come and cut my puppet strings/and end my persecution/I crave the freedom that your love brings/It's a sweet addiction". They toss in slight hints of religious undertones, with "My eyes are ever on the Lord for only he will release my feet from the snare ..." spoken (albeit distorted) at the end of "Shame". The music does lend itself to some comparisons -- the samples at the beginning of "Shame" sound like they came out of a Juno Reactor track, and at times "Mislead" shows a resemblance to KMFDM, with its crunchy guitars, electronic beats, and dual distorted vocals by Jennifer Happach and Rob Buhl. The similarity is further strengthened with some of the disc's remixes. Ah yes, the remixes. Not since Gravity Kills' "Guilty" single have I seen so many remixes on the same disc. The mixers feature some of Torn Skin's Blacklight labelmates, and some of them turn the title track into something entirely different. Fish Tank 9 lends some great bass dance beats after an interesting video-game-like intro. The 16 Volt track is a mixed bag, at times sounding like Prodigy with Enya-like vocals, and sometimes even stranger. Pivot Clowj gives the track a dark popish feel and adds ethereal interludes between vocals, giving it an altogether otherworldly feel. And the others are just as good. Torn Skin's two other songs are also engaging and very listenable. "Addiction" has a vocal style (thanks mainly to lead vocalist Rob Buhl) that really appeals to me, not too distorted and not too abrasive. "Shame" has already achieved some popularity on compilation discs and it's pretty apparent why: it's a quality track. Guitarist Drew Calvetti lends a heavy crunch to the song and keeps a good melody going as well. All in all, this is a good debut EP from a promising new industrial group. There's a lot of talent on this disc, and some of the remixers are pretty good, too.
Chain D.L.K. Magazine (Italy) July 1999, Torn Skin - Mislead
Torn Skin is a very interesting US band playing an intense power-packed post-industrial- rock fueled with tons of electronics. Their music presents a wide array of well-placed samples and a well-done songwriting and programming. Everything is based on sophisticated rhythmical structures, including pounding metallic hammerings as well as electronica beats. Pads, sequences and nice crisp production make it even more amazing. Further enriching the Torn Skin formula is the duet between a distorted... read more
