A Rare Find!Pure 80's Pop Pleasure!.......2005-09-16
After finding a complation disc with "No Promises", I recalled having some vinyl by these guys. I found some of those songs on this disc, but a few were a new find for me.I think with a little more air play, they would have been big here in the U.S. like they were in Australia.
The first few songs on the disc are very early new wave/pop feeling. I think they are alright, but I personally find the later tracks, especially" Hey Little Girl"," Don't Believe Anymore", and "No Promises" as good as any pop/rock ballads of the period. And for any of you "Divinyls" fans, the last song, a duet with lead singer Christian Amphlett and Iva Davies, is worth the cost of the disc alone!
Over all, I really have grown to enjoy this disc a lot. Varied styles, catchy lirics, and very well produced with excellent sound quality, I think any of us 80's music lovers will find a good spot in their collection for this disc and will enjoy it as much as I do.
Great collection from an underated Australian band.......2000-08-05
A very good, if not great, "best of" collection from this Australian band. Even though the later songs lack the strong writing of the earlier material, it is still worth owning for your collection.
best 1 disc greatest hits.......2000-03-03
would be 5 stars if they put hits from "man of colors" again those hits are omitted. But BETTER THAN "great southern land" in every way possible.
"Masterfile" is an understatement.......1999-11-05
I have to say that the entire album is a trendsetter, from Icehouse to Sister, to all of the other cuts, I would have to say that if you don't have this one...you should

Icehouse sounds like..........2006-02-04
well, Icehouse, really.
One reviewer below states "Icehouse has always been accused of ripping off Roxy Music" ... I find that to be a very strange thing to say :)
I am very familiar with both bands, and I must say I never (and still do not) see the slightest connection between these two bands.
I have always considered Icehouse to have an original sound.
But if pressed... really pressed, the best comparision I could come with is perhaps with Ultravox... but I'm far from happy even with that comparison.
Anyway... this is a very good compilation album of Flowers/Icehouse material, with a good amount of content from their debut album, when they were known as Flowers, and their first album was titled Icehouse.
I recently bought that album on CD, and wow... it really is brilliant, and very very underrated.
Even after 26 years, it sounds fantastic to my ears.
I was fortunate enough to see them perform many times in their earlier days, and their live sound was very true to their studio work.
In short, if youre into Flowers/Icehouse, you cant go wrong with this compilation, there are no dud tracks, and covers their history reasonably well.
As Good As It Gets.......2002-04-05
This CD is as good as it gets for my taste, one of my top 5 CDs (just remember we all have different tastes, fortunately). How anyone could claim that Icehouse sounds like Roxy Music is baffling to say the least. I guess someone will claim Miles Davis sounds like Kylie Monogue next. This contains tracks from many previous CDs, and there are no duds on this, just plenty of standouts. Don't let the comparatively steep pricing deter you. Other Icehouse masterpieces to consider are "Man Of Colours" & "Code Blue", though these do not rate as highly as this work to this reviewer. A very underrated CD.
More than just Greatest Hits.......2001-02-27
U.S. fans of Icehouse should note that the version of "Love in Motion" on this album is a different version than they're familiar with. The inside notes call it the "previously unreleased 1992 version", and it includes vocals from Christina Amphlett (with Iva still singing the chorus). I like it.
Also, the bonus song listed as "Byrralku Dhanguda" is an alternate version of "Great Southern Land", which is different enough from the original that it does not seem redundant to include both versions on this album.
The CD booklet includes some information written in Japanese (which I can't read...), and some in English. It also includes lyrics for all the songs, written in English.
Fans of Icehouse (like me) will like this CD for those two songs. This is also a good collection of songs for people who haven't heard Icehouse, except that it's probably a bit expensive for that. This has no songs from Icehouse's excellent "Man of Colours", so that would be a good companion to this.
Cross The Border........2000-03-21
Icehouse has always been accused of ripping off Roxy Music. While I agree that they do sound like Roxy Music, I think Iva Davies has his own sound with Icehouse. I also believe that Icehouse is more of a singles band than an album-oriented one. I am recommending this superior collection of pre-1987 hits for those who want quality 80's music. 1987's Man of Colours and 1990's Code Blue are the last good Icehouse cds before Iva slipped with 1993's Big Wheel. Masterfile collects all their early singles on one disc. A great song list including "Icehouse", "Hey Little Girl", "Street Cafe", "Great Southern Land", "No Promises" and "Cross The Border." This is a must have for any rock collector.
