5 out of 5 stars A Great Cross Section of Early 2000s Industrial Music.......2005-03-22

Possessive Blindfold's Exoskeleton 2 compilation is one of my favorite collections of ambient and noisy industrial music. The mix of artists and styles on the disks reminds me of Flatline Record's compilation disks as well - i.e. very diverse and interesting. The artists themselves come from several different labels, making this two CD set a good cross section of early 2000s industrial music.

The music is not what I'd call standard club dance music, but this is the sort of material one might expect to find on industrial radio programs and great for listening to. As with most music of the experimental and noisy industrial genres, there are very few tracks that have lyrics. The liner notes for the comp do not go into great detail about the artists (and may now be a bit out of date), but what I found most interesting that the notes listed the country of origin of all of the artists. The diversity in nationality / regions of the various artists, with some of the acts coming from Italy and Croatia, was actually nice to see.

Most of the tracks are listed as being exclusives or previously unreleased, but I honestly don't know if since the original 1999 release date if these tracks have appeared on other albums. My personal favorite tracks include: Sleepwalk's "Earthquake", Winterkalte's "Incinerator 1999", Stin Scatzor's "Black Silence", Blink Twice's "Exiled", Frames A Second's "Legend (remake)", and Voltaic's "Metabolise (Skeletal mix)". I've included this compilation on one of my must have lists for industrial music fans and DJs for a number of years.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, well-rounded compilation.......2000-12-26

Possessive Blindfold Recordings has a pretty good track record when it comes to compilations. There's Exoskeleton, Das Bunker, and Voltage II, all of which show that a great deal of thought and effort goes into releasing the best samplers PBR possibly can. This one is no different.

Actually, there is one difference: Exoskeleton II has two discs. That means it needs twice the care to make sure it succeeds. And succeed it certainly does, with one of the strongest collections of ambient, experimental, and power noise artists I've seen.

Power noise is well represented by the likes of Winterkälte and Converter, two popular and well-received artists in the scene. But nestled among those veterans are newcomers, including SaVaK, ZymOsiZ, and HPP - all of which have strong showings.

Although power electronics (noise, with an emphasis on grinding and penetrating low-end work) is not quite as prominent, it certainly has its place here. CazzoDio brings its [anti-?] religious overtones into the fray, while Jugend Staat scares the pants off of everyone in range.

Finally, there are some odd artists that don't fit into such clear categories, and they enrich the compilation. Blink Twice impresses with its rhythmic dark ambience, while Dryft's unique drill 'n' bass shows listeners what to expect from this Gridlock side project. Finally, Ah Cama-Sotz's technoid harshness rounds off the oddballs.

In essence, Exoskeleton 2 is a very diverse compilation that doesn't stretch too far. It has the right mix for beginners as well as for more experienced fans of the styles (who will thrill to see the number of exclusive/unreleased tracks here) - no small feat for any compilation, and even more deserving of praise when one considers the scope of this one. This is a must.
