With the live EnRoute, recorded at New York's Blue Note, guitarist John Scofield returns from the jam-band wars in challenging high style, leading a trio for the first time on record in more than 20 years. With his strong blues and funk sensibility, Scofield has always been the jazz guitarist most likely to succeed among rock listeners, and fans from both camps will be drawn to this purer improvisational enterprise. Teamed here with longtime drumming associate Bill Stewart and veteran bassist Steve Swallow (who was featured on those early-'80s trio albums), he's still jamming, but there's a sharpness of focus and a locked-in intensity among the musicians that you rarely encounter in jam-band settings--including his own. Emptying out his bag of much-imitated tricks--the sighing pedal tones, slab-like chords, shimmering lyrical lines, and controlled screams--Scofield romps through the bop classic, "Wee," and delivers a diaphanous reading of "Alfie." The album also features a pair of remakes: "Name That Tune," Swallow's bounding remake of Duke Ellington's "Perdido," and the leader's strutting "Over Big Top," based on "Bigtop" from his 1995 album, Groove Elation. From whatever perspective you choose, it's Scofield's best album since Time on My Hands, his 1990 quartet date with saxist Joe Lovano. --Lloyd Sachs

5 out of 5 stars 5 starts for Scofield.......2006-03-08

I first got hooked on John Scofield's material after finding several clips off of drummerworld.com. I knew who he was, but never listened to his recordings.

I had always seen this album in store shelves and read about it, but never actually listened to it. Not too long ago I bought it and dove into it. Great tunes, interesting sound. He's backed by electric bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Bill Stewert.

5 out of 5 stars Great, simple as that.......2006-01-12

This one of the best jazz albums I have heard in recent years. The group is tight. John's playing is very tasteful, not overbearing, or egotistical in any way. As the leader of the group, his solos are perhaps a bit longer, but they are great. The good thing about each of the tunes is that everyone gets a solo.
Bill Stewart is very key on this album. He his drums are tuned very tight, and they resonate very well. The coordination and interdependence of all his limbs is astounding. He really swings.
Steve Swallow is very impressive as well. This is my first time hearing him. He and Stewart form a great rhythm section; they are very precise with each other.
Overall, great sound, great CD.

5 out of 5 stars A more approachable kind of jazz.......2005-11-22

What's so special about John Scofield, and what separates him from other jazz musicians, is that he always adds a touch of blues to the jazz. On this album he plays with Bill Stewart (drums) and Steve Swallow (bass), and it's a live recording. The three of them really work well together, and when this was recorded they had already been touring together for over 15 years, so these guys know what they're doing!

I'm a huge fan of John Scofield, and this was one of the CDs that made me the fan I am today. In my opinion, this is one of the best albums he's ever recorded, and it's also one of my favourite CDs in general. Whether you already are a fan of John Scofield, or you're becoming one; you should buy this album!

4 out of 5 stars not as good as "Agogo" but it's different.......2005-09-19

It's hard not to feel bad for John Scofield. The guy is truly a phenomenal guitar player. That written, his life may forever be shadowed by one album he released with John Medeski, Billy Martin and Chris Wood. Most likely "A Go Go," will always be John Scofield's greatest musical contribution. This is clear after Scofield's many attempts to match the results of "Agogo." For example, most of the music off "Überjam" and "Bump" sound like the tunes from "Agogo" that weren't good enough to make the final cut. So despite Scofield's originality, he may never match what he did with Medeski, Martin & Wood. Perhaps it's Scofield's curse for having released one of the all-time best jazz albums with an improvisation super group as his band. (If you're one of the fanatics who's already slammed the 'not helpful' button on this review, what do you think is John Scofield's best selling album?) "Enroute" shows that Scofield has given up on trying to repeat the results of his 1998 masterpiece and turned his sound to a purer form of jazz. While some form of the descriptor 'purer jazz' is often used to describe the "Enroute" sound, the disc may never appeal to the true jazz purists from the Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass and Kenny Burrell camp. On the other hand, "Enroute" will have great appeal to those from the Charlie Hunter and Bill Frisell guitar school. The album has a great sound, although the songs aren't as memorable as they could be. If "Agogo" is your measure of John Scofield's career, "Enroute" does not meet it, but comes close on a different level.

5 out of 5 stars New View of Sco.......2005-04-12

This is definately the best Scofield album I have ever heard. It's dips into the more hardcore jazz which is very refreshing after his stint in the jam band world with his work with MMW. Tunes like "Hammock Soliloquy" and "Toogs" are some of the finest guitar playing i have ever heard. I could listen to this all day...every day. Definately a MUST HAVE! :)

5 out of 5 stars Top notch Cannonball.......2005-02-20

In February 1957, Cannonball recorded 2 LPs for EmArcy, "Sophisticated Swing" and this one. "Enroute" is one of his very best albums. "A Foggy Day" and "The Way You Look Tonight" receive some of the finest treatments you'll hear anywhere, and "Hoppin' John" is a real burner. A must have CD.

        5 out of 5 stars Enroute is Snifter's Revolver.......2003-07-17

Enroute is Snifter's Revolver. This recording is absolutely brilliant, start to finish .It's ethereal, beautiful, elegant and heartfelt. Beginning with the remarkable "Birdsong", this cd gets started on a startlingly excellent sound that continues throughout the recording. The classic "Mister Scrimshander" has a disconcerting, schizophrenic vibe, but at the same time, it's elegant and beautiful. "Blindmine" is punk rock perfection, evoking standard elements of Snifter's notable sound. "Jumpin and Slappin" starts off at a troublesome, brooding pace and boils over into an exploding symphony of sound. "Der Koozens" is a poignant, haunting ballad that is truelly amazing. From start to finish, Snifter made one of those rare albums that manages to pull everything out of the bare essentials (guitars, bass, drums) and make an absolute classic out of it. This stands as a landmark for not only rock, but mankind in general.
