While English pop monarchs Duran Duran have remained active for two decades, it's clear that the indomitable ensemble was at its peak during those mercurial '80s. This greatest-hits collection documents the band's ambitious beginnings as a funky glam-rock outfit and follows its gradual transformation into a high-tech pop band with loads of commercial appeal. Featuring now-classic tunes like "Girls on Film," "Rio," and "Planet Earth" as well as more recent songs like "Ordinary World," Greatest focuses on Duran Duran's unending string of hit singles. Although the young quintet that performs "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "A View to a Kill" has little in common with the posh, aging trio featured on 1997's "Electric Barbarella," vocalist Simon Le Bon provides some impressive continuity to these proceedings. --Mitch Myers

5 out of 5 stars Duran Duran leave a strong legacy.......2007-07-16

One great song after another on this disc. Duran Duran took the 80s by storm but the later part of the decade there was a backlash against them. Maybe it was the big hair and pretty boy attitude among other things. Grunge and Nirvana hit the scene and it became uncool to like Duran Duran, Hair Metal, and other things 80s. Overshadowed by all this is that Duran Duran are great musicians and songwriters and had a unique sound that has never been matched. Simon Le Bon wrote interesting lyrics with striking imagery and sung with a force and conviction that brought the songs to another level. Under appreciated bassist John Taylor drove these songs with cool, funky basslines (a good example is "Rio".)

These songs have stood the test of time and still sound good. Proof is that most of their work is still in print and selling over 20 years later. Here are some highlights:

1) Is There Something I Should Know? --A good opening and one of my favorites. Catchy as hell and a prime example of Simon Le Bon's talent for giving a song energy and urgency with intense singing and lyrics. "People stare and cross the road from me/And jungle drums they all clear the way for me/Can you read my mind, can you see in the snow/And fiery demons all dance when you walk through that door" --How many pop song's today have fiery demons in them? None.

2) The Reflex --One of their biggest hits and it was overplayed on the radio, but you can't deny the originality of this song. It goes in all kinds of unexpected directions and we'll never hear a pop song like this again. Some of Le Bon's most obscure lyrics.

3) A View to Kill --One of the best Bond themes and I think what makes this song is the pounding drums and the Bond-like horns.

4) Ordinary World --A later hit for them and one of their most beautiful. Highlights are the guitar solo and soaring vocals at the end.

5) Save a Prayer --Very close to Ordinary World as one of their best ballads. The magical keyboards by Nick Rhodes grab you immediately and "You saw me standing by the wall/Corner of a main street/And the lights are flashing on your window sill" --draws you in.

6) Rio --A defining song for them that everyone knows. John Taylor drives this song with killer bass, Nick Rhodes with great keyboards, Roger Taylor with excellent drumming, and Andy Taylor completes a band in top form. Even though this is the edited version the memorable sax solo is there. I bought this cd so I felt justified downloading the full version from the net which is about 5:37.

7) Hungry Like the Wolf --One of the most famous uses of "do do do do do, do do." The song that made them famous in America because of the video. Has that signature sort of tribal, jungle Duran Duran sound. A classic.

10) Union of the Snake --Another one of my favorites. Unorthodox verses and choruses make this song unique.

11) New Moon on Monday --Once again Simon Le Bon brings a song to great heights with an excellent vocal performance and "I light my torch and wave it for the/New moon on monday/And a firedance through the night/I stayed the cold day with a lonely satellite". You ponder those words during the song and interesting images are put in your mind and that's what good lyrics do.

12) Wild Boys --This song might be a bit over-the-top for some but it's power can't be denied. Simon sings the hell out of this one.

13) Notorious --Does it ever end? Yet another ridiculously catchy song.

14) I Don't Want Your Love (Shep Pettibone Mix) --A solid dance song that has aged well. Can't be resisted.

19) Come Undone --The sister hit to Ordinary World. Dreamy underwater sound with the backing beat made famous previously by Erik B. & Rakim.
Pretty female backing vocals and nice lyrics: "Words, playing me deja vu, like a radio tune I swear I've heard before/Chill, is it something real, or the magic Im feeding off your fingers."

And the other songs I didn't mention are good too. I bought "Astronaut", their latest cd as of this writing, and it's pretty good I like it. It doesn't match these songs though and I don't fault them. They were at their peak of creativity during this period and these songs are too good to be topped. Fortunately the 80s backlash is long over and it seems Duran Duran are finally getting the recognition they deserve, especially after people see them live in person or on TV (Live Earth for example). It's about time!

2 out of 5 stars not too good..........2007-07-09

Geesh, I remember them being better than this. Perhaps it was because I was 10 years old back then. Mea culpa, sentimentality trumped by reality.

5 out of 5 stars Slick sounds by guys in white suits.......2007-05-26

Few bands during the 1980s churned out as many recognizable pop hits as Duran Duran, and this "Greatest" CD captures them all. The guys in Duran Duran (no matter the band lineup) always had an ear for melody, great vocals and exotic sounds. Plus, they carried on as a true band, with everybody writing and contributing. If you like the band's radio hits, then this CD is a must-have; songs one through 13 have been played on the radio for eons. What drew me to this disc, however, was the tunes that aren't as well known.

Besides just catchy, synth-laden pop, Duran Duran were capable of adding soul to their sound ("I Don't Want Your Love"), a cold but sexy club-music vibe ("All She Wants Is") and real emotion and exoticism ("Come Undone"). Songs from the first three Duran Duran records are well represented here, and nice offerings from the same era such as "A View to a Kill" and "Wild Boys" are also present.

Duran Duran also had a nice, somewhat reinvented run in the 1990s, especially the early `90s. The songs "Serious," "Ordinary World," "Come Undone" and "Electric Barbarella" (from Medazzaland) prove that. "Serious," from 1990, sounds like a wonderful `80s leftover, updated in an organic fashion for the new decade, while "Skin Trade," a tune released in 1986, has a slick, catchy sound, but also displays some real soul and great vocal work by Simon LeBon. Though they barely received any radio airplay, each of these tunes could lay claim to being two of the strongest tracks on "Greatest," a CD that is chock full of classics. My only complaint is that "Too Much Information" from Duran Duran 2 (The Wedding Album) was left off, but beggars can't be choosers. Many non-hits by the band have been great, but if you're looking for your fix of the most popular Duran Duran music over the years, this CD is the way to go.

4 out of 5 stars Get your Duran Duran Fix.......2007-05-16

If you're considering this CD, I probably don't have to introduce you to Duran Duran--but just in case you somehow got amnesia (or were born after 1985), I'll give you the quick synopsis. If you were to put all the eighties, mainstream, cheesy yet still a little bit artsy bands into some sort of battle of the bands competition, Duran Duran would finish in the top 3 (along with Depeche Mode and the Pet Shop Boys), edging out other favorites like Billy Idol, Tears for Fears, and the Human League. Without a doubt they were a pop band--not to be confused with artists like the Talking Heads or Blondie--but they were an EXCELLENT pop band who put together 3 (maybe even 4) really good albums and an impressive string of great, sing-a-long singles. And that's a resume with which few can compete.

As for this collection, it's all the Duran Duran a person needs--and maybe even then some. Every single one of hits are here--including their James Bond song, "A View to a Kill," and early nineties hits like "Come Undone." You might have some gripes about which versions they use (for example, why the US edit for "Rio?"), but you can't argue with the track list as a whole. You've got all the smash hits (Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf, Girls on Film), as well as the popular tracks that aren't as well known (All She Wants Is, New Moon on Monday, The Reflex). This is a great collection for anyone who's a fan of eighties music or a Duran Duran lover.

5 out of 5 stars Donnie Darko UK Import : BUY IT!!!.......2007-05-12

Just bought this 2 CD import item. Was it costly? Sure: approx. $25. BUT, given that I nearly paid $20 for the US version which DOES NOT include the first CD, it was well worth it.
Delivery: SURPRISINGLY SUPER-FAST by USPS (it only took two or three days standard shipping)
Condition: Still wrapped in plastic.
Music: *tee hee* If you watched the movie, then you know what the music will sound like: it's the movie soundtrack (you know, the awesome soundtrack that both reminds the viewer of the 80's and also creates a haunting backdrop for the movie's themes). Typically here in the US that means only one or two of the good songs and the rest is the score. The UK version? ALL of the good songs and the entire score (that's why it's 2 discs).
Bad part? Not offered in US retail stores (i.e. you can only buy this online or in an Import CD store.

5 out of 5 stars It took 'em long enough, but it was worth the wait!.......2006-11-06

My friends and I have been waiting for this for years--finally, the real 80's music soundtrack for Donnie Darko, arguably one of the best soundtracks out there!

Probably the only negative comment I have is that they included the music from the motivational videos, something that I could have done without.

Thank you for putting this soundtrack out!!

4 out of 5 stars Donhnie Darko Import Soundtrack well done.......2006-08-24

The import edition of the Donnie Darko soundtrack is two discs. One is the actual pop songs, and some classical works, which are all very good and includes the remake of Tears for Fears "Mad World." The second disc is the instrumental score, with two versions of "Mad World," included as well. The instrumental score is very dark and omenous, and the two disc set is a nice collectible piece of music that I highly reccommend. The price is a bit high, at over $30, but if you are any type of a fan of the movie, or a soundtrack collector, this album is for you.

4 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2006-08-10

i wish i could have bought just disc one... because disc two is mostly the instrumental stuff, which is excellent, but i don't really plan on listening to it over and over. disc one is good, although there are a few songs i skip through.

In the decade of decadence, Duran Duran knew how to live the life. It was reflected in their videos (sailboats, silly white hats, tropical surroundings, grease-painted feral women) and garishly displayed in their public lifestyles. But if you can remove these connotations from the album that started it all, you'll be left with music that is anything but gaudy. For the most part, Rio is an eerie and sumptuous record. With their raspy, arpeggio synth sounds and Simon Le Bon's uninflected vocals, the misty ballads "Lonely in Your Nightmare" and "Save a Prayer" can still tear your heart right out of your chest and abandon it bleeding on a rain-soaked cobblestone street. With the dance-oriented singles "Rio" and "Hungry Like the Wolf," you dry out a bit, but the songs are far from airy or whimsical. One anomaly in this release, though, is the inappropriate prominence of John Taylor's bass lines. In every song, it sounds as if he is mixed more in expectation of a solo than as an integral part of the rhythm section. Ignore this technical distraction, however, and you'll enjoy rediscovering this gorgeous body of water-colored synthpop. --Beth Bessmer

5 out of 5 stars Synth Happy Fun Time.......2007-07-16

I've noticed recently that alot of today's modern rock is so heavily influence by 80's music. A few years ago it was easy to make fun of Duran Duran, The Smiths, and The Cure as cheesy 80's music. Listen to The Killers, and Franz Ferdinand. Morrisey and Duran Duran are Brandon Flowers(of The Killers) favorite bands. Listen to Rio and you'll see it. I find it ironic that the same people who make fun of Duran Duran love Hot Fuss.

5 out of 5 stars The best Duran Duran album by far.......2006-11-10

I was just the right age to be a Duranie - I was 15 during their 1983/1984 US tour - and I threw myself into it with gusto. I used to listen to the first three albums every single day. I still listen to those albums, but this, their second, seems to get on the playlist a bit more often. This is the only one of their albums that I own on vinyl, cassette, and CD, and have burned to extra CDs so I always have it in my car and by my computer. Obsessive? Yep, that's me. But who can resist the haunting beauty of Save a Prayer, the pop-iness of Hungry Like a Wolf and Rio, and the endless riddle of Simon's poetry?

5 out of 5 stars POUND FOR POUND THE BEST........2006-09-08

At a time when several pop/new wave records seemed to have little or no acutal musicianship, "Rio" showed up. This album has a sense of balance and dynamics that forces the listener to hang in there from beginning to end. Huge singles like "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Save a Prayer" fit seamlessly into a record that could have released any one of its tracks as a single. The production, while more sophisticated than the debut, has a clear rich tone which showcases the real talent this group had. (and still has)
Get it in the collection and enjoy a true gem from the 80's.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great album, better than most music today...so what if it was popular? .......2006-08-07

Duran Duran gets a lot of crap by alternative/New Wave people as being a bunch of pretty boys from the UK who made good. I would prefer to listen to them (specifically this album) because it's damn good music. I love the song Hungry Like the Wolf, and I still play it to death 20 years after it was made. The title track and Save a Prayer are also fabulous songs too. If I had a chance to listen to Duran Duran or crappy indie rock from the 1990's, I'd still take these guys. And their videos were light years better than their contemporaries (and current "rock" stars). Go Simon, Nick, John, Andy, and Roger!

5 out of 5 stars collection of b-sides and album tracks.......2007-06-06

This is a odd collection of Duran tracks from 1981 to 1983. Tracks 1,2,4,5,and 6 are all from their debut 1981 self-titles album. Track 3 is the b-side from the 'Careless Memories' 7 inch. Track 7 is from the 1983 re-release of their bebut album. Track 8 is the b-side to the 'My Own Way' single from 1982. Tracks 10 thru 17 are the entire 'Rio' album from 1982. And track 18 is the b-side to the 'Reflex' single, recorded live in 1982 but released in 1983. This is basically Duran's best two albums w/ some good b-sides, I'm suprised at its set up and selection, but its worth a listen

With the appearance of fashion-oriented acts like Adam Ant, Culture Club, and Duran Duran, the early '80s gave birth to an emerging genre called "new romantic." Appealing to a young, mostly female audience, the Duran gang--named after a character in the kitschy, futuristic Jane Fonda movie Barbarella--helped move U.K. music away from punk and back towards the early-'70s sound of groups like Roxy Music and T. Rex. Fronted by singer Simon LeBon, and anchored by keyboardist Nick Rhodes and guitarist John Taylor, the band made quite a splash with this 1981 debut via the British hits "Planet Earth" and "Girls on Film," whose pornlike video was banned by the BBC, thus helping the band's notoriety. --Billy Altman

3 out of 5 stars A Comeback of Sorts.......2007-01-19

From the mid-80s onward, Duran Duran began to decline. By the onset of the 1990s, the salad days of the Rio-era were a fading memory. Albums like "Big Thing" and "Liberty" had seen the band floundering with bland new rhythms and with mediocre songwriting. "Duran Duran (II)", aka, "The Wedding Album," brought the band back to the limelight with two marvellous hit singles. But does the rest of the album hold up as well?

We begin with the rather heavy "Too Much Information," a track that marriers then-contemporary grungyness with cynicism towards the media. It's a solid starter, albeit a bit too much of a distorted departure from the Duran Duran sound that 80s fans were familiar with.

The hit single "Ordinary World" follow, and with its fabulous guitar work and socially aware lyrics, it remains a timeless gem; trully one of the highlights of Duran Duran's canon.

"Drowning Man," which melds an odd vocal cadence to effect-laden guitar work, is the third track on the album. Some hate it; I find it rather enjoyable. It's different, and it works.

"Shotgun" is crap, pure and simple. It's about 40 second of whistles and drum machines that amount to absolutely nothing.

"Come Undone," the other classic, melds a trip-hop rhythm and soul back-up vocals to a more refined Duran Duran sound. It's yet another welcome addition to the canon.

And after that, it all sounds the same. Aside from the Brazilian-tinged "Breath After Breath" and the annoying stab at Price ("UMF"), all of the songs have identical production values. This homegenized delivery, coupled with uninspired vocals, make for a huge let-down. Even the Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale" is not immune to this process.

To say that this album is top-heavy is an understatement. The bulk of the substance is at the beggining of the album. The rest is cookie-cutter filler. But still... that first half is worth 5 stars. The rest, though, bogs down what could've been a great EP. Or just a better album.

5 out of 5 stars Class Act.......2006-12-12

I agree with the reviewer calling "Ordinary World" a dreamy, soaring ballad. This entire CD is a class act and one of my favorites. I never get tired of it!

2 out of 5 stars Hollow and Empty.......2006-11-12

While the previous album, Liberty, had some weak tracks, it had a few things going for it. First, it was a real concise album. The songs fit well together. Next, the members created the feeling of a Duran Duran album. I would almost term it the anti-Rio, with dark, soulful, and sensual undertones. Gone was the 1980s feel of earlier works, yet the album presented chemistry with danceable tracks and a solid commitment to creating an overall frantic listening experience (either positive or negative). With the exception of My Antarctica and Serious as great tracks, they ultimately failed to win many new fans. But eventually, most artists fail at some point. Yet they could still call Liberty a Duran Duran album because they stood for something and tried their heart out. In short, they were authentic in their failure.

Unfortunately, with the Wedding Album, they did the total opposite. With the commercial disappointment of Liberty and losing Sterling Campbell as drummer, the four members set out to create a new sound for the 1990s. While there is nothing wrong with inventing a new sound and image, the Wedding Album became a mere vehicle to capture fan nostalgia and make some quick sales with two great singles, Ordinary World, and Come Undone. Anyone who bought the album, however, found an incoherent mess of songs copying styles from other artists. Here was a band that stood for something in its heyday, now cheaply attempting to blend in with other popular artists of the time to sell some singles. While it worked for that album, notice that they could not sustain that momentum for over ten years until the band returned to its true form with Astronaut. Nick Rhodes recently commented that while the 80's were about artists expressing themselves, the 90's were about blending in. Unfortunately, that is exactly what Duran Duran did, denying their own creativity and greatness at the core. The results were mediocre and hollow. By standing for nothing, the members created an "Ordinary World" in the album's undertones. Regardless of markets, times, pressures, and sales, would you ever define Duran Duran as ordinary? Not me!

LeBon was also having substantial vocal problems during this time. As a result, many of the vocals sounded thin, strained, and turned down. None of the Above, as well as a few other tracks, overuses a processor. It is as if a machine sung the songs, not Simon the Great. This may have been a time when the rock star lifestyle and smoking was wearing thin on him. But to the listener, it sounds like he wasn't really trying. After all, if mediocrity is the goal in the 90s, then who cares how it sounds?

To end on a positive note, the band are writing and sounding better than ever today. Simon now looks half his age on the Wedding Album and sings better than ever. Even with the recent loss of Andy Taylor, the band are touring and recording, remaining true to the music, and handling market pressures with a seasoned grace and style. They are also gaining the critical recognition they have deserved for so long. I will close by stating that if the Wedding Album is the only thing that kept this band together continuously throughout the years, then I will gladly alter my rating to five stars in a heartbeat. But don't do it again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing!.......2006-07-29

Duran Duran's big comeback album. The rock-oriented Duran Duran 2! Amazing. "Too Much Information" is a great punk song. "Ordinary World" is a great ballad, and one of the best songs ever written...ever! "Come Undone" is interesting, as is "Breath after Breath." Warren Cuccurullo proves that he really is a master guitarist. Buy this album!

4 out of 5 stars Time to Say 'I Do'.......2006-05-29

This album was a total surprise for me. After the disappointment of 'Liberty', I expected much of the same. But no, this album really 'kicks'. Unlike all Duran albums since RIO, which are full of fillers, this album has 11 good tracks and only 2 that are disappointing (Drowning Man & Shotgun). We all know the big hits 'Ordinary World' and 'Come Undone', but this album also contains other gems...The Milton Nascimento collaboration, "Breath After Breath'' is fantastic and as good as anything that the Duran's have ever done....A real good album that stands the test of time and you can pick it up at a bargain price !!

4 out of 5 stars Strong debut album sounds even better remastered.......2007-04-11

Along with the improved sound, this updated version of "Duran Duran" also features the previously missing (but not earth-shattering) "To the Shore," which fits right in with the rest of these songs. "To the Shore" is a mellow, synth-laden tune with a swooshing percussion sound and subtle but competant guitar work.

Despite their image, Duran Duran were very much a thinking person's band. They also had a dark side to their lyrics and sound, which comes across on this album. What's impressive about this debut is Duran Duran's direct approach and non-naivety within the songs, as if the band knew exactly what it wanted from the start. Unfortunately, that also translates to a record that lacks excitement in parts. Nonetheless, though Duran Duran would expand their sound in a big way on future releases, there's a focused innocence to this record that's endearing.

All these songs are tightly constructed and tuneful. "Girls on Film" has a cryptic, indifferent vibe, but it's catchy as all get-out. In fact, the first several songs on this CD are radio-ready with an earnest vibe, but they might have benefitted from a bit more of a rock-oriented spunk. To its credit, much of this album features a mystical synth sound, a direction the band would perfect on the classic Rio album just one year later.

Musically, the guys in Duran Duran seemed wise and mature beyond their years when they put this out, and were perhaps even prematurely bored with what they were doing. Though "Night Boat" and "Tel Aviv" are more than a bit drab, the band wrote premier dance tunes -- mixed with sing-along pop -- in "Sound of Thunder" and "Friends of Mine," both of which indicated a special harbinger of things to come.

5 out of 5 stars In Their Own Words.......2006-09-04

John Taylor: "[Around] 1978, the whole punk thing started to lose its color."

Nick Rhodes: "We grew up in the 70's with glam rock; I suppose that's where our influences are, our stylistic influences, and so we wanted to move more back towards that."

John Taylor: "But at the same time there was this new wave of bands, like Japan, and Simple Minds that were kind of embracing that glam thing, but there was a little bit of funk coming into it, and that just seemed like, `Yeah, this is where we belong.' "

Nick Rhodes: "We found Simon [Le Bon] in 1979 and then we knew we had the full line up."

John Taylor: "We had a piece of music that had a start, a finish, a middle...it had, actually, a verse section and a chorus section and we said [to Simon], `Hey, you got any words for this?' "

Simon Le Bon: "...and I had some words that I tweaked a little bit and found that I could fit them and we had a melody that worked, and within 30 minutes we had pretty much 70% of the song called Sound Of Thunder. When you find something that works that easily and that quickly, you know you're onto a good thing."

John Taylor: "I knew we were doing something new because Andy kinda got the feel for this disco, four-on-the-floor kind of dance beat, and we wanted to somehow throw that into the equation of what was happening."

Nick Rhodes: "We were termed `New Romantics,' or `Futurists'. Actually, I preferred `Futurists' because it sounds a bit more like an art movement."

Simon Le Bon: "And I think we let ourselves become part of that scene, and be thought of as part of that because it helped us. There was a lot of interest in it. And we realized that if we could get into it that it would all spiral and it would help us take off. If you look at the music that the groups were making at that time, it wasn't that similar, really. But, there was a common feeling, a feeling of being part of something new, and this being our time, [that this was] the chance for us to go straight out there and have hits and to grab people by the throat and go, `We're here; we have arrived!' "

5 out of 5 stars Never sounded better.......2006-08-03

I swear the album never sounded this good before. And - now we in the US get the full, real, official album with "To The Shore." Amazing!

5 out of 5 stars So easy to disturb, with a thought, with a whisper..........2006-06-14

The now infamous five's debut album remains one of my favourites. It was released at the just the right time for me - 13 years-old and desperate for quality music with an image to boot. Too young for punk but just about framed for New Wave - Duran took all those seventies influences and packaged them perfectly for an audience just about to come of age. The fact this album co-incided with "New Romanticism" is largely irrelevant. Visage, Classix and even Spandau summed up the contrived nature of some of the NR acts. The first DD album is edgy enough to stand apart from the rest. And this is the important point. Tracks such as "Friends of Mine", "Sound of Thunder" and "Planet Earth" have stood the test of time. Proof was there for all to see during the band's recent UK tour. Many of this album's songs featured during the set with "Friends" elevated to the opening number. This would not have been possible without the excellent work of producer Colin Thurston. Colin was also responsible for the production of "Rio". Undoubtedly the band's best two works. Don't believe me? Listen, if you can, to the dirge that is "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" for which CT had been replaced.
Anyway, back to the band's eponymous first album. My favourite track remains the basket case single - Careless Memories. Punk, funk and rock and roll. It reached number 37 - Britain, you should be ashamed of yourself.
Buy this album. It's of its time but it's not dated in the same way its contemporaries did.

5 out of 5 stars Calling Planet Earth.......2005-12-22

Duran Duran's debut album lacks the feel of consistency & feel of overall concept/plot which works a lot better on their next two albums (none of them are concept albums, but it takes some time before you notice that Seven & The Ragged Tiger isn't!). But this album is still up there on the same level as those two masterpieces, mainly because of the outstanding quality of the songs & the wonderfull production. Truly, the intro to 'Planet Earth' is NEW ROMANTIC, nothing less...

'Girls On Film' is a perfect fashion/narcissism anthem, complete with camera sounds & disordered lyrics. 'Planet Earth', arguably even better &, if so, the best song on the album, wraps up everything in an immaculate classic, sounding like a cross between the former song, & Bowie's 'Starman'.

After these two, the songs lose some quality, but not much, and especially 'Careless Memories', 'Night Boat' & 'Anyone Out There' are classics. On some versions of the album, the 'Is There Something I Should Know' single is also included, a song not as majestic as the band's two first singles, but still a fully deserved classic & smash hit. It also fits well on the album, but the album is perfect even without it, & as anybody just dabbling in Duran Duran must have their first three albums & a best-of anyway (to obtain 'The Wild Boys' & 'A View To A Kill'), tracking down a version of this album containing isn't worth the bother, as it'll be on the best-of...

5 out of 5 stars Super collection-I finally get Meet El Presidente single version.......2007-01-16

This is a companion collection to the original singles box 1980-1985. The packaging is similiar in that you get individual discs in original artwork of single sleeves. I finally get the single version of Meet El Presidente. I really enjoyed the B-Sides as well, as most of my singles were vinyl and don't play as well anymore. This is an awesome addition to a Duran Duran fans collection.

3 out of 5 stars Do you believe in shame? cd single.......2005-12-01

I think i've figured out the flaw on The Singles 86-04: (Disc 06) Do You Believe In Shame? (Cd Single) track 2 The Krush Brothers LSD Edit. it is actually the songs from the big thing cd tracks 11 & 12 "the edge of america" (cd track length 2:37) & "lake shore driving" (cd track length 3:03) combined was an edit. the track on the singles is 3:30. so, i've entered the song in my music collection database as this "The Edge Of America / Lake Shore Driving (The Krush Brothers LSD Edit)". I think that's the closest to the actual title as i can get. just an fyi.

5 out of 5 stars The Endless Pursuit. . ........2005-09-14

. . . of the real villian, that is the endless (so it would seem)pursuit of the B-side singles. Unlike the 1st 81-85 boxset, not all the b-sides are present (The Wedding album especially). Maybe it's because by then, because of the introduction of cd's, there wasn't really a so called b-side. However, I suppose that's part of the Duran Duran game for the true fans. Not to despair, this boxset contains many remixes I've never heard or even knew about... so I was estatic over the collection. If I had a complaint about this set it would only be that it stopped at 1995 and didn't include the Medazzaland material. Otherwise a true gem to my Duran Duran song collection. Truly amazing!

5 out of 5 stars More In Depth Review.......2005-07-10

This is my new and updated review. The Duran Duran Singles Box Set 1985-1995 is awesome. I am so pleased. I will admit, there are a few things about the set that puzzle me. I am definitly glad that there are more songs on some of the individual CD's this time than with the last set. But the choice of songs baffles me a bit. The CD for "Ordinary World" includes "My Antartica," "Skin Trade," "Save a Prayer," "Hungry Like the Wolf," "The Reflex," "Girls on Film," and another version of "Ordinary World." The extreme Duranie, (I'm just a big Duranie but don't know all the different mixes) might argue that these are different mixes, but I just wonder why they decided to put songs that were from the past on the set verses later recorded songs. I don't know if it was because they were no longer with EMI or what, but it seems like it would have been cool if they could have thrown a few "Meddazaland" or "Pop Trash" singles on the set. It's almost like the "Ordinary World" single is like a mini sampler of the popular older musc. None of the really popular older songs missing from the set "Rio," "Is There Something I Should Know," and "A View To A Kill" can be found on the set. I tale that back, "Wild Boys" is missing and that was a popular single as was "Union of the Snake."

I am so happy with this set because finally we get a lot of mixes of some of the later songs like "White Lines." A few more things that irk me, the individual CD jackets dont have the track listing for the CD on it and the discs are all grey so you have to have the big box or booklet to know the listings on the disc you choose to listen to. Of course you know what the single is based on the CD jacket cover art, but you don't know what the bonus goodies are.

The set also includes some songs that weren't included on previous full CD releases including, "God," "This Is How A Road Gets Made," "Decadance," "Throb," "Yo Bad Azizi," "Water Babies," "The Needle and the Damage Done," and "Make Me Smile," (which was on the first box set on the Reflex single.)

If you have the first set, the second set is a must have so you can sit your box sets next to each other and marvel in all of your little Duran Duran singles! I really, really love the remixes. I have always liked the "Oakland Fonk" mix of "White Lines," and it's nice to have it on CD. The "Violence of Summer" single includes 7 remixes of this song. You get 14 CD singles that were from the albums-"Notorious," "Big Thing," "Liberty," "Duran Duran (Wedding Album), and "Thank You." The single "Burning The Ground," is also included on this set.

5 out of 5 stars A Happy Duranie!.......2005-07-05

I'm so glad I spent the money (finally) to purchase this boxed set! I'm a really big fan of the 12 inch singles that the band used to sell, and it is great to get a few of the old favorites on this set as well as everything that was from the era when the original 5 started to fall off one by one. Very good buy - cover art brings back a lot of memories!

The arrival of The Singles demonstrates perfect timing. With the impulse to treat 1980s pop with irony finally dying and cutting-edge American bands such as the Rapture and the Faint directly sourcing Brit synth-pop, this lavish box set now sounds like a key dance-rock primer. Unlike the other major players in the early 1980s British Invasion of America, Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor, and Nick Rhodes weren't afraid to rock. They rocked hardest on their early singles, as the glossy black box of the first 13 singles, lovingly recreated for CD, proves. The first eight--from the turbo-powered disco of "Planet Earth" to the synthetic Beatles-influenced pop of "Is There Something I Should Know?"--work on the tension between the band's mega-pop ambitions and their rudimentary instrumental skills, creating an eerie, erotic desperation. The full compliment of B-sides--particularly a hysterical, uber-youth club stab at David Bowie's "Fame"--charm with their gung-ho ridiculousness. "A View to a Kill" may be slick Bond theme, but this set is so evocative of strange pop times that you'll end up with "Rio" and "The Wild Boys" on a permanent mind-loop. --Garry Mulholland

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!.......2007-01-16

Original artwork, B-Sides, great music. What more can be said.
This compiliation includes all of their singles from Planet Earth to A View to A Kill in the original sleeve artwork (UK artwork). A must have for any D2 fan.

5 out of 5 stars Singles as they should be.......2007-01-12

I absolutely love this collection! Sure, there have been compilation CDs that have several of these songs on them, but to have them on CD as they originally were, complete with the original artwork, makes the experience that much more special for those of us who had the 45s back in the day, back when we'd sit and look at the cover while the music was playing. It is truly a must-have for anyone who considers themselves a Duran Duran fan.

5 out of 5 stars Return of the cool.......2006-12-14

For those of us who owned these singles on vinyl way way back in the day this set is heaven. We can now hear those obscure tracks like Late Bar and Khanda. "Why a Kh" you ask? New Wave! No rules, no boundries, experimental fun. A break from the harsh rebellion of punk and with taste of eccentric dance and sex appeal to boot. If anything this set should be bought because it captures the energy and vitality of Duran's early career. I don't think there are any weak songs in the bunch, but I've always loved early DD. I'd rather hear an early DD B-side than much of what's on the radio these days anyway.

I've read some complaints that all of these could be put on one disc- well, sure. But, as Kramer would say, "Why go to the park and fly a kite when you can just pop a pill?" It's so nice to have them in some semblance of their original form, with all the artwork, same order and in very smart packaging. I say 'smart' because I like the shiny little black disc holder for the set. It's very cool and true to early Duran Duran album art. Besides, if you want them all on one disc, just import to your iTunes and burn. You'd have to be crazy to carry these around in a CD player anyway. I've learned, always make a copy and save the good stuff for when you need to make another- and for a big fan of early Duran Duran, this IS the good stuff! :-)

3 out of 5 stars what the heck 13 discs!.......2006-09-08

I am a big Duran Duran fan. I have every album made from the 80s. I made the mistake of buying this before I carefully looked at the contents.

Now the music is great and it has songs not found anywhere else. I really liked the Re-mix versions of songs such as Save a prayer and Union of the snake.

But what I hated about this was this thing has 13 discs thats right 13 discs, why? All these songs could have easily fit on 3 discs or 4 tops. This thing is bulky and expensive. I imagine if they would have fit this in to less discs it could have been half the price.

I ended up having to create my own mix cds.

I really want to buy the other box set 1986 - 1995 but I am afraid I will hate the form of that box set also.

Awesome Duran Duran box set - the songs were neatly compiled in beautifully arranged mini looking album covers. Really brought back alot of memories. I would recommend this to all true Duranies!

2 out of 5 stars Has its moments, but over it's just plain dull.......2007-01-25

I love Duran Duran and have ever since I heard their breakthrough hit Hungry Like the Wolf in 1982. They have made wonderful, fun, challenging music for almost thirty years now. Although Seven and the Ragged Tiger is one of their biggest selling albums, it is a creative misstep. Duran Duran and producer (the late) Alex Sadkin have buried elements of what made the first two Duan Duran albums so special -throbbing colorful basslines, sharp rhythms, cutting guitar lines - leaving little to replace them. The results sound like a muddle: lots of big empty spaces and weird exotic noises masking few catchy hooks or memorable musical ideas. Even the band's huge hit The Reflex had to be re-mixed to find radio airplay in 1984 - the lifeless version on this album will leave many listeners scratching their heads (The slicker "radio" version can be found on both Greatest or Decade).
A few highlights - New Moon on Monday, which boasts a strong chorus and great harmonies; Union of the Snake, a highly charged blast; and Shadows on Your Side, a song that stays truest to what most listeners loved about the first two Duran Duran albums.
Duran Duran records before and after Seven and the Ragged Tiger have often scaled great, giddy heights - this one just barely gets off the ground.

5 out of 5 stars Sabbath Stone can bend over.......2006-04-19

"Seven and the Ragged Tiger" is so thrilling, I can't see why anyone would give it less than five stars. It's an album of exotic textures, interesting grooves, and genre-defying rhythms. You'd be stupid to miss it. And Sabbath Stone is stupid.

1 out of 5 stars The album that made me convert to Ozzy at age 7.......2006-04-18

Duran Duran's third album Seven and the Ragged Tiger was released in the Fall of 1983.
This was the band's first album after the breakout success of Rio which took a year to take off in the US.
I am a rock music fan and when I was 7(back in 1983), in addition to listening to greats like Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Van Halen, AC/DC and so on but I was also listening to new wave acts like The Police, Men at Work and the Roxy Music facsimiles Duran Duran(who took their name from a character in Hanoi Jane Fonda's 1968 film Barberella).
Whilst I still like the former two New Wave acts plus The Cars, I grew not to like Duran Duran and only got the album for Union Of the Snake but I detested the #1 hit The Reflex and New Moon on Monday was done before. Cracks in the Pavement and Tiger Tiger just cry out 80s!!!!
This was the band's last US Top 10 album for many many years(until their fluke 1993 comeback) and was the last album before Simon Le Bon and company IMPLODED over music direction, personal and money differences.
Two weeks after I got this album, my older sister brough home for me Ozzy Osbourne's Bark At the Moon and after one listen to Bark at the Moon, I threw this album where it belongs, in the TRASH and I have avoided(except for a two week window in 2003 to try and warm up to and failed) these *ss-clowns!

5 out of 5 stars The third time is the charm!.......2006-04-17

"Seven and the Ragged Tiger" is England's Fab Five's third album (Number one in the UK and top ten in America!), which is more avant garde and complex than anything we've ever heard before. There will NEVER be a song as brilliant as "Union of the Snake" or "The Reflex" and never will! Buy today. Simon, Nick, John, Roger, and Andy are geniuses!

John Taylor: "We were just drunk [on our new-found success] by this point. We were so into living the dream...and part of the dream was that you made at least one of your albums on the French Riveria."

Nick Rhodes: "I thought the thing was never going to get finished. It really took a long time. There was a lot of different feelings in the band about the direction we should take."

Simon LeBon: "We started off in the south of France, then we went to Mt. Surratt, came back to the U.K. briefly and ended up finishing it off in Austrailia...Sydney. It was a difficult time. It really was."

John Taylor: "We re-recorded it like three times. We did it once and said, 'Nah, this isn't right.' Did it again, said, 'Eh.'"

Nick Rhodes: "To me that album, more than any of them, on the surface of it seems like there's a lot of pretty songs on there, but then underneath there there's this sort of not quite controllable hysteria scratching away at the surface."

5 out of 5 stars Matches Rio in it's brilliance.......2006-04-28

The song Notorious I think has earned a place in the dictionary of funk, it still sounds classic 20 years later, and ofcourse it's been used by P Diddy and sung on B.I.G.'s Nasty girl giving it some real credibility. Skin Trade, Vertigo, American Science and So Misled are other awesome funk odyssey's that make you wonder what critics were on about labelling them 80's pop icons and pin up idols. After all this is a point where they lost many of their screaming girl fans, but gained new listeners who discovered that they had wronged a great band. Half of the album is more melodic with tracks like Hold Me (I don't know why but I hear Pearl Jam in this) and A matter of feeling, two stand outs which are among their best songs ever. Then there's the dark and wintery, Winter Marches on, my favourite on the album. Just love those cold atmospheric synths and Simon's voice on it. The album flat out rules, every minute of it, so get this one immediately.

5 out of 5 stars The best!.......2006-04-17

England's Fab Five strike back with a potent album that silences the haters. Just because they lost two members, it doesn't mean these guys can't rock. I'm lovin' every minute of "Notorious"!

3 out of 5 stars In Their Own Words.......2006-03-13

Nick Rhodes: "When we came to get back together [after the splinter group projects Power Station and Arcadia], there was only three of us."

Simon LeBon: "We were so desperately happy to get back into Duran Duran but we almost overlooked the fact that we'd lost Roger and Andy in the time that went by. When a band loses two of its members, it loses two fifths, 20%, it's a big knock to confidence. We had fans who were Andy and Roger fans who just......well they left us. You know, when Roger and Andy left, they left, too - or they'd just write letters, `Get Roger and Andy back!'"

Nick Rhodes: "They basically didn't want to be involved for their own reasons; it was to do with the pressure of the situation."

Simon LeBon: "You can't make someone do what they don't want to do. It wasn't us kicking them out; we'd have loved to have had them around still. They just didn't want to know. [Nick and I] just felt that [Duran Duran] was not dead, and we weren't going to let it die."

John Taylor: "Nick came to me and said, `We're going to do another Duran Duran album,' and I was kind of getting into a more of a funky [sound]. I'd enjoyed with a horn section [on the Power Station album] and the band didn't exist as it had before; we had to find a new sound."

Nick Rhodes: "It left us in a position where we knew what direction we wanted to go in. We knew what producer we wanted to use. We teamed up with Nile Rodgers who'd worked with us on The Reflex and Wild Boys. We wanted to make a funk record."

Warren Cuccurullo: "When I got into the band in 1986, here they were, three guys from the original five, continuing on under the name Duran Duran. To go on and to keep the name is something that I really admire about John, Nick, and Simon because you're really putting your a** on the line. There's fans that are expecting to see the whole band, and then there's the die hard fans who are thinking, `This isn't Duran Duran anymore.' ...I think my style of guitar playing is more what the band really needs. I think it's more with the direction where Nick and John were kind of at than what Andy's doing. Andy was more into kind of an American rock thing, and I was always more into the more esoteric British rock stuff."

John Taylor: "The scary thing about `Notorious' was that it was the first album we put out that people didn't buy. After having toured it, we sat looking at one another saying, `Wow, what happens now??!'"

4 out of 5 stars Funky Stuff.......2006-03-10

Ok, so it doesn't have the hooks that their earlier stuff has and it isn't as strong as the stuff they are doing now - but its a solid album. The melodies are great and I challenge anyone to sit still while listening to the title track. Its a funkier Duran, and totally dance-worthy, but also manages to leave you feeling soothed. "Winter Marches On" is a bit out of place on thise album as it sounds more like something from Rhodes' and LeBon's project, "Arcadia", but it remains one of my favorites with its haunting beauty. Simon LeBon shows a lot of versatility on this album, and John Taylor proves again that he is possibly one of the most underrated musicians out there. Nick Rhodes - well, he pulls it all together in his Wizard-of-Oz-man-behind-the-curtain way that he always does. All in all, not my absolute favorite Duran Duran, but still makes regular rotations through my CD player.

5 out of 5 stars Flawless, sans two Taylors.......2006-02-13

I'll be the first to say Notorious doesn't sound like the old Duran Duran, but that's good for many reasons: First, it's always great to see a band step out of their typical genre and add other musical styles to their own album, for instance the big addition being a horns section and the addition of soul and funk. This does nothing but make the album have an incredlble flavor throughout the whole thing, especially on songs like the title track "Notorious", "American Science" and "Skin Trade". Now for all of you afraid of this album, there are still many elements of Duran Duran still majorly present throughout the whole album, like Nick Rhodes excellent performance on Synthesizer. There are so many overlooked gems on this album as well, not the least of which being "A Matter of Feeling", "Hold Me", "Winter Marches on", and "Proposition". I hate using the term, but Notorious certainly has a more "Adult" feeling to it then their previous albums (WHICH WERE ALL PERFECT in every sense of the word, don't get me wrong). And as far as I'm concerned, Duran Duran mastered the Genre of Funk with Notorious. THIS IS NOT A POP OR SYNTH POP ALBUM. This is Duran Duran. And since they have bravely explored many genres of music with many different songs over the years and in my opinion succeeded, they deserve a hell of a lot more praise than most people will ever be willing to give them. Notorious was just the beginning, a Phenomenal beginning.
