A lonely Westerner in Nashville, Marty Robbins salved his soul by cutting an album (in one afternoon) of mostly self-composed cowboy ballads. One of them was a four-and-a-half-minute epic, "El Paso," that broke every rule of Top 40 programming to become a No. 1 pop and country hit in 1960. Robbins was arguably the most surefooted and accomplished singer in all country music, and that was never more obvious than on these Western ballads performed to often breathtaking perfection with a very small group and a vocal trio. Other titles include "Big Iron" (also a Top 30 hit), "Running Gun," and Western classics like "Cool Water," "Billy the Kid," and "The Strawberry Roan." Three extra tracks flesh out the 1999 release, including "Saddle Tramp" (the B-side of "Big Iron") and "The Hanging Tree" (title song from the 1959 Gary Cooper Western). --Colin Escott

Classic Cowboy.......2007-05-27
Although Frank Sinatra is credited with creating the first "concept" album. Columbia might have one-upped Capital with this unique "Old West" collection. Although its been almost 50 years since this jewel was first recorded, it sounds like it was made yesterday. Marty Robbins has had many hit albums in the C/W top ten, but none of them has been as endearing as this 1959 classic. You get "El Paso, "Cool Water" "The Hanging Tree" and 12 more ballards sung by one of Country/Western all-time favorites. I can guarantee, you will continue to listen to these cowboy story songs for years to come.
Gunfighter Ballads by Marty Robbins is Cowboy Songs at their Best.......2007-03-20
The lable attached to the CD says "All Time Country Classic". It's misleading. This is an all time classic, period. I first bought this collection as an LP. The front said "High Fidelity", not "Stereo High Fidelity," but as a kid in 1959, I didn't care. "El Paso" was #1 on the pop charts. Marty Robbins had been a "cross-over" artist making the charts with "A White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation," so I was primed when this album hit. Grammy-winning "Gunfighter Ballads..." set Marty Robbins apart. It isn't country, it isn't '50s pop, it might be Americana or folk music. It is cowboy or western music, I suppose. There are more reasons to own this album than "El Paso." "Cool Water," "The Master's Call." Utah Carol," "and "The Strawberry Roan" are all great songs interpreted by a great voice. "Gunfighter Ballads ..." is what it now says on the CD jacket, a "classic." Marty Robbins died in his early sixties, so many younger ears may not know him. They should, especially if they collect the good stuff from all eras.
Great CD.......2007-03-08
I grew up listeniing to Marty Robbins, and the Gunfighter Ballads is my favorite album and I just had to get this CD...because I use to listen to the music on LP, back in the 80's and I haven't heard the songs for over 15 years...with great imagination, listening to these songs would make it seem like you're watching a very interesting Western movie.
More than just "El Paso.".......2007-01-28
If you want to buy this CD just for "El Paso" you'll be plenty happy. If you allow yourself to listen to the remaining tracks, you'll be very happy. This was Marty's best effort, IMHO.
The remastering is done very well, although the source recording, being in 1959, does have its limitations. Overall, a very enjoyable CD, and well worth the work done to remaster and restore it!
Gunfighter Ballads & Trails Songs .......2007-01-18
I find the quality of the CD GUnfighter Ballads & Trail Songs to be fantastic. I never thought I would ever find this album in a CD form. This was one of my favorite albums I loved listening to when I was little. My dad loved this album as well and now that my dad passed away. Everytime I listen to this CD I think of my dad. Thanks Amazon for having it on hand for me to purchase it.

The Cowboy Junkies' gothic Americana takes a psychedelic hue on At the End of Paths Taken, replete with Beatlesque string sections and snarling, distorted guitar leads. It's an often epic album, exemplified by the opening track, "Brand New World," which starts off like a lament and ends with a triumph of surging strings. Atop it all sits singer Margo Timmins. She's the lover everyone wants, a voice that is at once world-weary and inviting, domineering and seductive. She's the perfect vehicle for writer and brother Michael Timmins--especially on an album that deals with adult themes--because if nothing else, Margo sounds like an adult, a woman who has experienced the world and life and things that maybe we shouldn't talk about. A mother's frustration never sounded as ominous and threatening as on "Cutting Board Blues." Sitting astride a buzzsaw guitar riff and a groove of doom, she talks about walking away from it all, leaving her cutting board behind. Many of the themes concern adulthood and children with a sense of despair about the world those children are entering on songs like "My Little Basquiat." There are moments of light and hope on At the End of Paths Taken, but overall it is a deliriously dark and brooding album. --John Diliberto
Album Description
Despite its title, the new Cowboy Junkies album, At the End of Paths Taken, is as much about new beginnings as it is about endings. It is also about human connections, the struggle to sustain those connections over time, and the complexities that can arise even when those connections are maintained. It is, in other words, a classic Cowboy Junkies album - a suite of smart, richly textured songs that value subtlety over broad, generic strokes, songs that prize insight and casual revelations over easily digestible clichés. Family lies at the heart of the album's eleven songs, and, of course, that is appropriate, too. Three of the band's members - singer Margo Timmins; songwriter, producer and guitarist Michael Timmins; and drummer Peter Timmins - are siblings, and bassist Alan Anton has been a member since the group formed in Toronto in 1985. Few bands have lasted nearly as long with their original line-up intact, and fewer still have created as consistently satisfying a body of work.

The Junkies Just Improve With Age.......2007-06-21
How anyone could rate this less than five stars is completely beyond me. I have followed the Junkies since their second album, and really got into them with an assigned review of 'Lay It Down', which I still consider a masterpiece. But this recording is something else entirely. I've lived with it now for quite awhile (I think I had it about a month before official release, so add that time to the date of this 'review'), and I'm still awed by its strength in all directions. The writing is superb, Michael's guitar work gets better and better as time goes on, Margo's voice sounds more tuned and better than it did twenty something years ago with 'Whites Off Earth Now', and the arrangements (including strings) are simply amazing. Try listening to 'Brand New World' (the first track), and see if you don't feel optomistic about the world today. By the time the closing track, 'My Only Guarantee' finishes, it's clear that you've reached the end of THIS path taken, but I can't wait to hear where they will go next. I stand up and applaud this grand achievement of the Junkies, quite possibly the finest recording of their long career and one I will treasure for years to come. Now if they would only issue it on vinyl too...
Fantastic.......2007-05-02
I've just listened to this once, so there's probably so much more that I didn't catch yet. But what a fantastic, gorgeous, and enthralling album. This is the Junks 11th studio release - and it's the same band from when they began more than 20 years ago. But this is not the same sound sonically. Michael's guitar playing and approach continues to mature and grow (listen to Cutting Board Blues). Margo's voice has never sounded better, IMO - it's like a fine wine aging to perfection. Peter is here, along with long-time guests Jaro Czerwinec and Jeff Bird. Alan's trademark bass is very under-stated on most of the tracks, though. But the big difference is the presence of strings on nearly all of the songs. It's a great fit with Margo's voice and the tone of the album, which is very oriented towards family. There's a children's choir on the ending song, along with a recording of Father Timmins (which makes up the under-lying element of Mountain).
Highlights of the album are Cutting Board Blues, My Little Basquiat, Follower 2, and It Doesn't Really Matter. The album reminds me of Open in some ways - a big departure in sound from their previous albums. I'd rank it up there with One Soul Now, which is my favourite album of theirs in the last decade (Caution Horses remains my personal favourite).
Buy the album - and don't forget to see the band live if they're coming to your neck of the woods (unfortunately no Texas dates yet - drat).
What a great CD..........2007-04-21
I am a longtime Cowboy Junkies fan. Their sound has taken various twists and turns over their various releases, but overall they still find a way to keep their "signature" sound within each release. "At The End of Paths Taken" is yet another example. They still sound like the Junkies, but again, they have found a way to incorporate something different and new in this release. I love it. The mellowness, the moodiness, the creativity, the complexity. I think it's one of their best. There's something that just grabs you in from the first song, and makes you want to keep listening until the last. It's easy to get lost in this CD. Thanks for more great music, CJ's!
Same Talent, Different Direction.......2007-04-21
This album is very different from the work the Cowboy Junkies did in the nineties and late eighties (I haven't listened to the 2004 One Soul Now, so I'm not sure how it compares). Their characteristic harmonica has taken a vacation, and drums have a much larger role along with several additional instruments (many that I can't even correctly identify). Further, the music is more complex, layered and psychedelic than in their 80's and 90's albums. Finally, their themes have changed, and instead of being about heartbreak, violence and despair and they are now about "family" (using Margo's term).
I have noticed these same changes in other artists' music as they have matured. In most cases, I have found these developments disappointing (Sting, Annie Lennox, Tori Amos, Peter Gabriel) as it seems like the angst and edge that originally drove these artists' creativity later gave way too something over-worked, something more science than art, something more benignly pleasant than engaging. In this case, however, I am not disappointed for the most part. Margo's hauntingly beautiful voice is still entrancing (although its changed a little too). The family themes are real rather than overly sentimental. The Cowboys still have some edge, as shown in Cutting Board Blues. And there's still some of that forlorn feeling of their earlier work in Spiral Down. It Doesn't Really Matter Anyway has a little of each and is a great song. Someday Soon didn't work for me at all, but maybe its just a matter of taste. Also, even though Mountain could be a great song, I don't like the rambling male voice in the background, its too distracting. And I wasn't hip on the kids' voices in My Only Guarantee, even though it would also be an otherwise great song. (Maybe these two songs waded into the "over worked" category just a bit).
Ultimately, while there are selected albums out there that I like better than any of the Cowboy Junkies albums that I have, I think the Cowboy Junkies could easily be characterized as consistently being the best band of the last three decades. They deserve more recognition than they have received in the U.S, but perhaps a lack of commercial success in the U.S. is part of what has kept them so great over the years. Also, Cowboy Junkies, if you read this - thank you for coming to Idaho to play. I never thought I'd get a chance to see you live and it was wonderful.

There are several Cash boxes available, but The Legend--spanning the years 1955-2002 but concentrating on his long tenure at Columbia and, to a lesser degree, his beginnings at Sun--probably belongs at the top of the list. Cash's greatest strengths are dramatized on these four, thematically programmed discs: Win, Place and Show: The Hits; Old Favorites and New; The Great American Songbook (mostly traditional songs); and Family and Friends (collaborations). For starters, consider the staggering depth and breadth of his repertoire (perhaps matched only by those of Bob Dylan and Ray Charles), embracing ancient folk tunes ("Streets of Laredo"), teen pop ("Ballad of a Teenage Queen"), mature contemporary rock ("Highway Patrolman"), gospel ("Were You There When They Crucified My Lord"), topical fare ("Ballad of Ira Hayes"), country standards ("Time Changes Everything"), novelties ("One Piece at a Time"), and more. Then there's the way his spare, spacious sound opens up to take in horns ("Ring of Fire"), strings ("Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down"), anything. The Legend includes seven previously unissued sides, most prominently "It Takes One to Know Me," a stirring salute to his wife June. --John Morthland
NOTE: There is also a deluxe limited edition of The Legend, featuring a lithograph, a bonus disc, and a DVD, and housed in a 120-page, 12" x 16" hardcover book.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyed by a non-County Boy.......2007-07-17
For $30, a great collection! Some of the earliest music that would be more traditional was not my cup of tea, but certainly worth listening to for its part of American history. The mini-bio and photos in the middle of the package was worth reading too.
Box Set "Johnny Cash ...The Legend".......2007-07-13
I am very well satisfied with the box set. It does help to fill in some obscure areas of his musical accomplishments. There also were several songs he recorded that I was not aware of. Sound quality was very good.
Man In Black........2007-07-01
What can I say? It's Johnny as we all want to remember him. His kind has died out and we will never see a singer larger than life like John Cash.
Bye buddy, we love ya!
Excellent.......2007-05-17
A great collection for someone like me who was really pretty new to Cash's music, since it's a long way from my normal genre. An awesome amount of great music for the money, I love it and wish I'd discovered this music years ago.
It gives a great sampling of everything that Johnny Cash delved into musically, and arranged in a way that lets you listen to an album at a time rather than just skipping to your favorites like some collections.
A great start for a new Cash fan (I can't see how a long time fan could go wrong here either). If you can, pick up the Unearthed boxed set of his American recordings to complement it.
Bottom line, this is the definitive box set for Cash and if you can only get one... this is the one to get.
Awesome CDs, bad packaging.......2007-05-06
This is an awesome collection of Cash tunes. My only gripe is that the CDs come in a large (tall and skinny) book that doesn't fit well into any CD rack.

The aim was to do for country what Saturday Night Fever did for disco. The result was that bars from Kona to Kalamazoo suddenly had mechanical bulls, and slickers walking around in cowboy hats. You might also pinpoint this as the moment in time when "country" music suddenly went cosmopolitan, paving the way for Garth Brooks. Johnny Lee's "Lookin' for Love" was one of the decade's biggest singles, and this album briefly made a star of Mickey Gilley (whose Texas club provided a home for that alpha bull). Fans of Bob Seger, Jimmy Buffet, the Eagles, Dan Fogelberg, and Bonnie Raitt may want this collection for the tunes they lack elsewhere. And it sure recalls an era. But please don't call it "country." --Bill Holdship

Where were the good songs?.......2007-05-21
I love this movie, and I like the songs on this soundtrack, but, there are some songs that were in the movie that realy need to be on the soundtrack, but, they, for some reason left them out. Such as the intro song, "Texas", by Charley Danials. But, overall, it is a good album.

Very Very Good.......2007-02-12
I'm not a country music fan in the least. But I saw this movie at least 3 times and it was superb. I thoroughly enjoyed the music. There are several good artists on this soundtrack like Dan Fogelbert, Bob Seger, Anne Murray, The Eagles, Johnny Lee. Charlie Daniels, Kenny Rogers and a few others. Every song on this ST is excellent. Even if you're not a country music fan like myself, this is one good CD to have in your collection of movie soundtracks.

Best possible selection available.......2007-06-21
Like many others I was a huge Don Willimas fan between the mid 70's
and mid 80's. His incredible deep baritone voice + the wonderfully
arranged melodies scored hit after hit. During those days I collected
each and every LP launched on the market because, besides the hits,
all other songs were beautiful as well. Like so many other great C&W
artists of the 70's and 80's he stopped having success around '89 when
producers decided to change country music into pop music and struggle
for the Hot 100. That was the end of 3 full decades of authentic C&W
music. A real pity!
My opinion.......2007-06-11
I just like the country sound of Don Williams. His mellow deep toned voice sounds very much like my brother. In fact my brother named his daughter after Don's song Amanda, which I think he performs to perfection.
My favourite though, has got to be 'You're My Best Friend". In this Don uses the soft gentleness of his voice to tell of his friendship with his wife.
There are many of his great songs also, I'm Just A Country Boy - Tulsa Time - Good Ole Boys Like Me and Listen To The Radio mixed with some that I hadn't heard before. Don sings sad and heartbreaking songs without being morbid.
All in all, it is a good mix of great country songs from one of the best in the business. Hard to beleive he's just turned 68.
Fills the Soul.......2007-06-10
This collection has all the best of Don Williams. It is like meeting an old friend again as soon as the music starts and his full, baritone voice comes thru, so rich and heartwarming. There are no singers today coming close to matching his voice. The title of "Gentle Giant" is well earned.
Class Act.......2007-06-02
This is an album of classic hits from Don. I have listened to it many times already. If you are thinking of buying a good "golden oldie", think about this album and go for it!!
Waltzing Music to dance to........2007-04-20
Famous for his great love songs, soft smooth voice, this CD is pure Don Williams.

On their sophomore effort, Canada's Cowboy Junkies manage to make a one-day recording session in an old church one of their most satisfying listens. Featuring the sultry voice of Margo Timmins, the precise musicianship of her brothers Peter (on drums) and Michael (on guitar), and bassist Alan Anton, The Trinity Sessions is a spare, evocative, countrified-rock classic. Their inspired reworking of both "Blue Moon" and "Working On A Building" reveal the Timmins family to be talented interpreters and insightful neo-traditionalists. Mixing the ambitious songwriting of Margo and Michael Timmins with subdued covers of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane" and Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," The Trinity Sessions is an exquisite collection that holds up quite well under repeated listenings. --Mitch Myers
Customer Reviews:
Late nights and cold days.......2007-06-18
I got this as a hand-me-down cassette and it got me through so many late nights and cold, dark days when I was in college that I couldn't _not_ replace it when it finally gave out. I especially missed "Misguided Angel" and "200 More Miles". It's not dynamic, though, so if you're looking for something with a more obvious rock sound, this isn't it, but it's a great album.
the earliest is still the best.......2007-05-14
I got a new copy of this to put it on my ipod. My favorite line is "soul like a lucifer..soul like a piece of wood."
great tone poem for late night.......2007-05-09
I read reviews before buying this (which I typically do not do before writing a comment) and mostly I agree...however I would give this a 4.5 for the following: The Cowboy's version of Waylon's "dreaming my dreams' so diminishes the melody its a missed opportunity--and the bass line is just plain out of synch with what this song requires....and on Hank Williams "I'm so lonesome I could cry" nobody changes Hank's lyrics...especially "lonesome SKY to Haze" which doesnt make the next stanza rhyme...there are two times when the harmonica comes in and its mixed way too loud --its jolting...I have to say that their take on Sweet Jane kinda makes up for those lapses....
a unique work.......2006-08-31
This is the most intimate cd I have ever heard. The band actually went into a church and recorded the album live. What you hear is what they did, no studio modifications.
The sound is very slight and organic. No matter how much you turn up the volume, you cannot make the music loud. The drums are played with a brush, the guitars are turned way down and any electronic amplification is kept to a minimal.
B/c of the set up, the vocalist's voice is mixed way up front and is the feature of the cd. Boy, can she sing and her voice is beautiful and expressive.
That being said, not every song is fantastic and it is not an exceptional cd. The grandeur of the work is in the atmosphere not in the strength of songs. The silent, intimate nature of the cd does make some of the songs sounds a bit similar to each other.
The best songs are "Blue Moon", "Sweet Jane" (they do the version from Velvet Underground live 1969, the mellow version) and "Misguided Angel"
This is a unique work that is exactly what the title says it is. The "Trinity Sessions" a bunch of songs recorded inside of a church.
The Trinity Session is great!.......2006-02-24
I really enjoy listening to the Cowboy Junkies...if you like them, you'll like this CD too.

Elton John has always liked having it both ways. He's flamboyant and vain, yet empathetic and sincere. He sits at his piano playing sentimental melodies, but the words come not from inside his soul but from friend Bernie Taupin. For Captain Fantastic, he and Taupin wrote a concept album which sketches their career together. "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" is easily the strongest song outside of the concept. The addition of several songs "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" featuring John Lennon, "Philadelphia Freedom," and "One Day at a Time" blow the concept but up the entertainment value considerably. --Rob O'Connor
Customer Reviews:
The Story of their lives in song.......2007-06-18
Elton John and Bernie Taupin closed the chapter of their peak years by writing a song cycle about how they got there. "Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy" put away the glitter and the costumes and painted an austere portrait of the artists in their hungry years. By reigning in the excess and making many of the songs modest and sincere, "Captain Fantastic" gave fans of Elton the best of both worlds. The simpler storytelling of the earlier part of Elton's career was matched to the increasing confidence of his and Bernie's songwriting. While there was no glammy-hit with catchy chorus to be found on this album, it is easily the most consistent work of their glory days. It even made history by becoming the very first album to enter the charts at number one.
It is also the most sentimental of Elton's albums. The humble beginnings are underscored by the title track, and the orchestrated original closer of "Curtains/We All Fall In Love Sometimes" is beautifully done. The late Producer Gus Dudgeon made this album glow rather than flash - he may be one of the most underrated participants in Elton's career. (He passed away in 2002.) This was such a departure for Elton stylistically that only one song became a hit single, the song of love lost without regrets "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," in which Long John Baldry and Bernie talked Elton out of going through with a marriage that would have seen him ending his musical career. It is a powerful ballad and fits in even better when positioned in the "Captain Fantastic" storyline.
Because the album is a concept album, it is best listened to as a piece. The angry "Meal Ticket" is a great rock song, as is "Bitter Fingers." But it is the way all the pieces fit that brings out the brilliance of this album. Even though two of the three bonus tracks are number one hits, they are actually a distraction here. Even the liner notes concede that point, claiming that Elton and Bernie were really trying to stay true to form, and had no issues with recording singles as items not album specific. Even so, how many albums can have bonus material as terrific as Elton's cover of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" or concert classic "Philadelphia Freedom?" Anyway you look at it, bonus tracks or no, "Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy" is a classic, the moment that captures all parties at the pinnacle of their powers at a time when they were also at their most commercially successful.
After-note: I received this album for a gift on my 15th birthday, and met Elton John in Philadelphia in 1989. When I told him how I got the album (and the poster), he laughed and said "you're making me feel f'n old." That poster - also signed by Bernie - is framed and hanging in a treasured spot on my office wall.
Are there more stars..........2007-05-08
Of all of the dozens of CD's you could get with this guy, you can't beat "Fantastic". The best of Elton John and Bernie Taupin is RIGHT HERE. You don't have to look no more!!! Gif.
Brown Dirt Cowboy~ Elton John.......2007-05-06
Bought this in vinyl but lost all my albums so
I bought it again when cassettes were the fad.
Just had to have it on CD..... bought it again!
Now I have in on my computer forever.
Love it!
Ending An Era In Style.......2006-12-02
Elton was just a singles machine, when this album came out. But he used all those singles to guarantee an audience for this brilliant, very uncommercial masterpiece. The album debuted at number one, but people expecting more "Daniel" or "The Bitch Is Back" were undoubtedly shocked, but hopefully not disppointed. This album has it all. It rewards the true Elton John fans who waited through numerous commercial hits for an album worthy of his earlier work. As if inspired by the story line, his early career with Bernie Taupin, Elton and Bernie seemingly go back in time and come up with just an incredible album as good as anything he had ever done to that point, and miles better than anything he would ever do again.
The bonus tracks include two number one monster singles. Not bad for bonus tracks.
Absolutely one of the greatest albums of all time!.......2006-11-05
Elton John was a 70s version of the fab four

If you're completing your music collection and haven't a Kenny Rogers CD, get this one. All hits ranging from beginning to now.
Great memories and more..........2007-02-18
If you are a Kenny Rogers fan, this one won't disappoint. All his most popular hits and some great duets, everything you're looking for. The only downside (if there is one) is there were a few songs squeezed in that would probably not be considered among his greatest hits, but are still good music to listen to.
BUYER BEWARE.......2007-01-21
I had the old 20 greatest hits (1994) cd but it seemed to me that the volume was recorded very low during mastering so i figured that this newly mastered one would be ideal. NOT. The first five tracks are the 'KENNY ROGERS AND THE FIRST EDITION" versions. If i wanted him and that horrible band he seems to can't let go of, I would have bought that one instead. So you do not get the better ruby don't take your love to town version. You get the old "kingston trio" one instead. If you liked the original songs in their original form you'll be dissapointed as some of the old great songs you loved are altered and changed up a bit. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME AGAIN WHY THEY FEEL THE NEED TO HAVE TO CHANGE OR ALTER GREATEST HITS PACKAGES. If i had known they were altered and quite horribly i would not have bought this. I would have stuck with the older compilation as it is the better one.
Kenny Rodgers .......2007-01-15
Since seeing Kenny in Concert in Nottingham England in 2006 - I have been searching for an album that contained 1 song, that he sang at the concert. I had never heard the song before but apparently it was an old one, so I searched the shops and the net and found it on this album. The song is The Rose, which is on repeat on the stereo...
The whole album is fantastic and has been constantly played.
Marie Lincoln England.

Like most "best of" collections, this one contains both hits and misses. But we listened to it twice as soon as we got it, sang along both times, and enjoyed it immensely. Well worth buying!

The gravel-and-grits voice of Kenny Rogers ultimately came to define the "Urban Cowboy" era of pop excess, even as the earlier "Lucille" and "The Gambler" were some of the most galvanizing story songs in country music's history. Looking back at this body of hits, it's easy to poke fun at the treacley "You Decorated My Life" or wince at the cheesy string arrangements on "Through the Years." It's also natural to wish Rogers had never heard of Sheena Easton, his misguided duet partner on "We've Got Tonight," and recorded more with the soulful, sad Dottie West ("Every Time Two Fools Collide") and the randy Dolly Parton ("Islands in the Stream"). (A bonus track, "Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer," pairs him with old pal Kim Carnes.) As the years went by, Rogers got fatter, lazier, and more content to make crappy TV movies and wallow in the flaccid sentimentality of adult contemporary pop ("Buy Me a Rose"). He also got smug--the worst of sins for a man in his business. But behind the microphone, he always knew how to make even the hoariest of lyrics resonate with feeling. And at his peak, he was the perfect male country superstar, equal parts swagger and sweet, sweet promise. --Alanna Nash

In 1979 redneck rock reached an apex with "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," a monster hit that reached No. 1 on the country charts and crossed over to No. 3 on the pop charts. But as this 1983 overview suggests, the Charlie Daniels Band was more than a one-hit wonder, even if the fiddle duel on "Devil" remains their definitive moment. Only Lynyrd Skynyrd could equal the energy of their rocking mix of Southern boogie, honky-tonk, and electric blues. At 10 tracks, this set may seem a bit skimpy, and while there's no dross, some listeners will find the nascent jingoism of "In America" and "The South's Gonna Do It Again" hard to swallow. --Roy Kasten

Buddy Bregman on Charlie Daniels.......2007-05-06
Having been associated with Ella, Bing, Sammy Davis on many many recordings - I can't tell you how thrilled Charle Daniels makes me feel - there is something so infectious about his music - it sends chills down my spine - this album is a total winner - and I play it all the time - I don't even do that with my own recordings or any other artists material - IT IS SUCH A "FEEL-GOOD" GROUP OF SONGS AND OVER-ALL MUSIC - I can't wait to get into my car and play it again. Especially Devil Comes Down To Georgia!!!
Yeah, Charlie,
Buddy Bregman
One of the Best Country Albums Ever Made.......2005-05-03
My dad had a tape of this album and i loved "The Devil Went Down To Georgis". The quick tempo made it interesting to listen to. I listened to it over and over again. I went further into the tape to find more wonderful songs. If you buy one CD this year, make it this, it's one of the greatest ever.
Best album I've ever heard!.......2004-06-28
The Charlie Daniels Band, in my mind is the Best Country band ever! This was an amazing album. I love it and play it every day, probably every hour. I'm only 15, but I know Mr. Daniels' songs like I'm 50. This Album brings out the best of CDB and is well deserving of praise! CDB is very Patriotic and Mr. Daniels is a model citizen. God Bless Mr. Daniels. God Bless our Soldiers and President Bush.
GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!
The songs that made Charlie Daniels an American icon.......2004-05-02
I came of age at a time when rock (if you can call late "1970s rock" rock - I wouldn't) and country sometimes overlapped, and no one straddled the genres as successfully and meaningfully for me and my friends as The Charlie Daniels Band. 1979's The Devil Went Down to Georgia was huge and served as my introduction to this country band that knew how to rock a fiddle. Then came the 1980 Full Moon album featuring The Legend of Wooley Swamp, a song I couldn't get enough of. You couldn't go to a pizza joint for a year and a half without someone cuing this song up on the jukebox (usually more than once). Also from the Full Moon album came In America. This was 1980: America was suffering from stagflation (an all but impossible economic combination of both inflation and high unemployment that only Jimmy Carter could make happen), the Soviets were rattling their sabers and pointing increasing numbers of nuclear missiles at the US, and the American hostages in Iran headlined the news every single night - America was at one of the weakest points in its history. Charlie Daniels made all of us proud to be Americans again with his patriotic anthem In America.
Uneasy Rider is a story song featuring some classic bluegrass picking in the background dating back to the band's early days. The song's about a hippie who gets stuck in a redneck Mississippi town and holds off a gang of five country boys by calling one of them out as a liberal pinko Commie; it's a great, comedic song running in excess of five minutes (which qualified as a long song back in that era). 1974's Long Haired Country Boy is your classic "good old country boy" song; this country boy doesn't have much, but everything he does have, he got on his own - as old Hank would say, a country boy can survive. If you don't like it, just leave this long haired country boy alone. Still in Saigon relates the experiences of a soldier in Vietnam and the trouble he had adjusting to life back home.
Of course, 1974's The South's Gonna Do It Again holds a special place in many a Southerner's heart; this is the song morning deejays play when they want to rile up some of the masses of Yankees that have moved down South in the last few decades. It's a great song, featuring an extended bit of serious fiddle playing, but it's probably best appreciated down here below the Maxon-Dixon line.
Stroker's Theme, Every Time I See Him, and Let It Roll were previously unreleased tracks included on the album. Let It Roll is a real toe-tapping, rocking country number that really gets the juices flowing (and I'm not talking about tobacco juice). The band packs a lot of intensity into Every Time I See Him as well, although this isn't really a stand-out track. The Charlie Daniels Band is still going strong today, but both their roots and their most commercially successful tracks are forever preserved in this impressive collection of hits from their first decade of recordings.
Great Charlie Daniels Collection.......2003-09-29
A DECADE OF HITS is a great collection of Charlie Daniels' best- known songs. If you're new to Daniels' music, get this one, FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN, and MILLION MILE REFLECTIONS to start- preferably all at once.
