Antipop

Antipop, indeed. Primus, led by mad genius/bassist/vocalist Les Claypool, enjoyed past radio success with "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" and "Wynonna's Big Brown Beaver." And on Antipop, Primus's usual staccato freneticism and rhythm-propelled tunes are as compelling, demanding, and provocative as ever. Like Mr. Bungle, another oddball Northern California outfit, Primus's humor is omnipresent, though not in a Weird Al way, despite the fact that Claypool's nasal delivery is not unlike Mr. Yankovic's. Most of Antipop is patented Primus funk-pop, what with a song about "sniffing paint since the seventh grade" ("Lacquerhead") and the autobiographical title track ("I am the Antipop / I'll run against the grain 'til the day I drop"). Still, there are a few departures. The spacey, seemingly deliberate Pink Floyd homage "Eclectic Electric" is cool, as is the very Tom Waits-like "Coattails of a Dead Man." --Katherine Turman --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Their Best?.......2005-10-19
Well, depends on how much of a PRIMUS purist you are... definitely without a doubt their most adventurous. And despite the fact that there are guest "producers" a plenty on this record, they do nothing more than just that... they produce. With Hetfield and Morello lending a few non-imposing guitar chops here and there, they do not interfere with the bands genious in any way, not as much as they subtlely complement the sound. And as for the presence of *cringe* Fred Durst, well don't worry... not as much as a peep from him, thank God. "Laquerhead" (the Durst produced track) is quite the catchy rocker rather, if I do say so m'self... Not the PRIMUS album to start with, well I don't know... I think maybe it is, as this album no doubt the sharpest hook in PRIMUS' tacklebox. Fish On!
you say Primus, i say KICK A**.......2005-07-22
primus is primus guys, all of their albums are spectacular!!! if you are a primus fan just collect the whole Les Claypool collection (sausage, holy mackerel, oysterhead, c2b3, frog brigade, and any other one that i missed, oh yeah PRIMUS!)
if you are not a primus listener, try Tales From The Punchbowl first, or maybe even Frizzle Fry. or buy them all at once. you may not like "some" songs, but there is ALWAYS one song (at least, thanks to a sertain 5 song album) that you must put on repeat.
"To defy the laws of tradition,
it is a crusade only of the brave." (frizzly fry album)
musicians enjoy, others can just miss out.......2005-04-08
I don't get all the negative reviews for this album. Primus is an awesome live act, and this album captures their live sound better than anything else they've done (STSOC is a close second).
Now to the point of this review. This is a rhythm section delight. We all know Les is an amazing bassist (although he is a little overhyped), but the drumming, oh my heck the drumming? Maybe only a drummer would understand, but Brian pulls out some amazing chops on this disc. Just listen to the opening minutes of "Antipop" and listen to the intricacies (however you spell it) of the hi-hat work so get an idea of what I'm talking about.
Another thing - these guys actually sound aggresive and confident again. After 'Tales' and 'the brown album' you had to wonder what the heck was going on. On this album they actually sound alive. That's all I've got - take it for what it's worth.
Primus + Metal = "Antipop".......2005-02-07
After listening to "Tales From The Punchbowl," Primus' 9th album "Antipop" was very refreshing to hear. With Les' unforgettable bass riffs, Ler's wacky guitar playing, new energy with Brain on drums, and various producers including Tom Morello, Matt Stone, and Fred Durst, this album was asking for a high rating. I could honestly give every song on this album a 3-5 star rating. Primus with a metal edge! Go for it if you like hard rock.
The one you SHOULDN'T buy!.......2005-01-28
I love all of Primus's work including the EP from 2003. But this cd reeks of commercial banality. There is too many outside people on this cd. Like what is Fred Durst doing producing a Primus song? Primus themselves dont like this album. Luckily the younger drummer Brain is gone. He was fantastic on Brown ALbum but this one is just bad! Buy all the Primus cds but this one. It sucks. Nuff said

Celebrated New Yorkers M. Sayyid, Beans, Priest, and Earl Blaize bring their unique take on hip-hop to the world with this intensely challenging debut album. As part of the "progressive" hip-hop scene (which also includes the likes of Anticon, Shapeshifters, Mike Ladd, Project Blowed, and Celestial Records), Anti-Pop specializes in countering the formulas and fronts which keep much of today's hip-hop romanticizing in neutral. Producer Blaize's beats thunder and plod along efficiently, treading a fickle line between rhythm and chaos. Heavy on repetition and bleeding with distortion, Blaize crafts an interesting soundscape that lyricists Sayyid, Beans, and Priest use to play with words. Sci-fi rhymes and free-think flows are delivered with an almost pretentious cool. Their lyrical darts target the usual suspects: jigginess and materialism. With often unwieldy, sometimes ambivalent flows and meandering beats, Anti-Pop live up to their name and then some. --Hua Hsu

Close to Perfect.......2007-03-04
If you're looking for something WAY different, but still VERY good, pick up this album. A fellow hip hop fan recommended them to me about five or six years ago. I couldn't get into them intially but, after a few listens, you'll finally "get" APC. Their genius is the fusion of hip hop and electronic beats, ambient soundtracks, unique flows, echo, reverb, and lyrics from another world.
One of my favorite hip hop songs ever, "Your World is Flat," is on this album. My other top two, on this album, are: "Rinseflow" and "Smores."
Their style's a lot different than any other other group out there right now and, mind you, this album came out in 2000. Unfortunately, APC have since broken up. Beans is now a solo act and High Priest and M. Sayyid are Airborne Audio. Who??? Exactly. Too bad because we had one of the most original hip hop acts since Ultramagnetic.
These guys opened up for Radiohead on their "Kid A/Amniesiac" Tour. Radiohead!!! All of their albums are great and I wish they'd get over whatever problems they had and get back together. APC live is one of the best live hip hop shows you'll ever see. "I guarantee (you have to say it like Justin Wilson)!"...
triumphant dialogue.......2007-02-23
This is the album that resparked my interest in hip hop again, big time. The triple tag team rap attack of the sickeningly skilled M. Sayyid, Beans, and High Priest, along with the deep, dark, and at times almost sub-aquatic production is like nothing put to disc before or after. I would go as far as to call this album a landmark release, legendary even. It's not too abstract to listen to and it's not predictable mainstream garbage. Hearing these three power-packed and very different rapping styles from quite possibly the greatest MCs alive, weaving gritty tales of urban paranoia and painting vivid verbal dreamscapes that would make Dali blush simply blows my mind to pieces. How anyone can find this boring or flat is beyond me. You're either jealous or braindead if this stuff don't do it for ya. For my money, this, "The Tragic Epilogue" is the best rap recording of all time. APC is dead, long live APC.
airborn audio= m sayyid and high priest .......2004-10-30
After spending the past two years in the lab, High Priest and M Sayyid of Anti Pop Consortium will reemerge as Airborn Audio. Their debut album is scheduled to drop on Ninja Tune Records, Feb. 2005.
ugly.......2003-04-07
I am not really able to write a justified review on this album because I am unable to listen to it indepth enough as it bores the hell out of me. The lyrics might be abstract and ahead of there time, but Im pretty shure there nothing close to doseone and I am unable to really listen to lyrics when the vocalst sounds so boring and dull. I am ashamed to say that I would rather listen to some gangster rap than this. If your tired of pimped out egotistical rap and want something avant garde, indie, abstract, pregressive, poetical whatever you wanna call it. Listen to anticon and forget about this.
The Music Is Flat.......2003-02-25
It's always good to see artists who push boundaries. However, it's always sad to see artists who push boundaries but forget to push the music. This record has it's high points, like PSA2 and Rinseflow, but in general it sounds like a bunch of mc's who can't really put an interesting rhyme or beat together, so settle for confusion. While confusion has made for some incredible hip hop records, this isn't one of them. Most of the album makes up for soul with college kid tricks. It's too bad, it seems like these guys do have talent, they just don't know how to use it.

A hip-hop album where free-jazz meets avant-garde had to happen. And conceptually it works--who doesn't want to peep out the urban sounds of tomorrow? But here, like on previous attempts to fuse the two genres (Miles Davis's Doo-Bop collabo with Easy Mo Bee comes to mind) neither musical form really complements the other like it should. The instrumental numbers are the clear standouts. On "SVP," Matthew Shipp's hypnotic piano loops combined with Anti-pop's synthesizer blips work well. "Stream Light" features a masterful duel between Shipp and bassist William Parker that illustrates just how familiar they are with each other after years of playing together. By the latter third of the album, the Anti-pop MCs get their rap groove back--somewhat. "Monstro City," a be-boppy spoken word number, is a monster cut that is well served by Guillermo Brown's percussion slaps. To be sure, this is certainly not meant to be a club-friendly Guru/Jazzmatazz album. However, as the title suggests, both entities really do seem to be working against one another ("A Knot in Your Bop"). Still, while the album may read better on paper than it sounds on your player, it's definitely worth a thorough listen, if just to see where rap's future possibilities may lie--outside of Outkast or RJD2, that is. --Dalton Higgins

They redefine both hip-hop and jazz by pushing boundaries; Antipop frees hip-hop from its standard 4/4 breakbeat traditions, and Shipp combines his free-jazz roots with a new, tighter sensibility, emphasizing the groove. 10 Tracks. Positive Direction.......2003-03-01
Anyone who knows the music of Matthew Shipp; knows what a creative and talented Musician he truely is. Matthew has always been associated with "Free-Jazz" and the "Avant-Garde". With this new CD,which I feel is a groundbreaking work; it still fits into those categories, but with a new twist. I can honestly say that I have never been a fan of Rap/Hip-Hop Music; and this is not your typical Hip-Hop CD. The Rappers on this CD convey "Positive" messages without any profanity or perversion. They remind me of the old recordings from Gil Scott-Heron. The Rap/Messages are done with a seriuosness that is much needed in this Genre of Music. What is also great,is that the music is being played with "Real" Musicians. Most of the tracks do contain Rap/Vocals, and a few instrumental tracks as well. I highly recommend this CD to Fans of Rap/Hip-Hop and Jazz to realize that there is something "Powerful" and "Positive" that can come out of creating Music from the "Soul".
Chances Are Taken and Exciting Things Take Place........2003-02-24
I was not familiar with Matthew Shipp when I picked up this record... I'm a big Anti-Pop fan. The idea of a collaboration between a hip-hop group and a jazz pianist sounded really great-- and honestly, the results of that idea sound even greater. The album is like a giant struggle with, or dialogue with, the conventions of loops and 4/4 rhythm. The instrumentation is simply amazing, and so is the emceeing, and so is the beat programming/synthetic contribution... everyone involved in this project was really willing to drop their pants a bit and see what happens. The result is a highly diverse recording that dances around all classification and expectation. Not all of it sounds tight, but it's tight enough. I've listened to it about ten times now and I still can't get over how well the Anti-Pop Consortium is sticking faithfully to the concept its name implies. Fans of abstract and underground hip hop who are looking to see how the envelope is being pushed should definitely pick this up.

I have to start this review by noting M.Sayyid and Earl Blaize's abscence on this release. High Priest and Beans foot the Antipop's bill here, which in no way dissappoints, but shows a noticeable difference in the directions this group is moving. And possibly indicates Blaize n' Sayyid are working on their own concoction to bomb the Hiphop World with....?
Matthew Shipp is a great musician for these MCs to collaborate with. Shipp's band packs a tight backbone-consisting of upright bass, drums, vibes, trumpet and flute. Shipp's piano progressions switch from sounding Far-Eastern-ish to 40s-50s swing-ish, but when Priest gets out the Moog synth on 'SVP'(trk5) it makes for a wild journey. Shipp punches out a repetitive, eerie but catchy, pattern on the ivories while Priest creates a bassline out of crooked drops and squirts, eventually meshing into a beautiful harmony. 'Staph'(trk 2) is reminiscent of the Roots earlier Illadelph style, and Beans breaks it down, staying right in time with the kick drum.
This(10 trk,60min.)album truly serves as a fat hold-over installment for any Antipop Consortium fan who can't wait till March for Beans solo album to pop, and if you're reading this after such time; this album is worth buying for the affore-mentioned 'SVP' and 'Coda'trk6 alone. 'Coda' is one of the best Priest songs I've heard to date(and I own many, mind you, 12" incld). I don't believe Shipp even contributes on this track, so it's full force, pure produced Antipop. Look for the rest of the crew's solo efforts, too. These are the pioneers of the soundtrack to the inevitible crumbling of the now-present-bling-culture that seems to infest every aspect of Hollywood(and the Music Industry).

While most rappers prize money, women, and some convoluted version of "street cred" above all, Anti-Pop Consortium's Beans, Sayyid, and Priest immerse themselves entirely in the joys of language, spitting staggeringly complex monologues in a riot of free-association poetry. "I'm now worthy of the grace / My face graces Jupiter's lakes," they stutter on the excellent "Bubblz" as dislocated bongo drums gasp and stammer around them. The production is out there: "Ping-Pong" loops the snap of a bouncing Ping-Pong ball, while the digital static of "Mega" segues an opera singer's heavenly scales into the trumpet of jungle beasts. Arrythmia is occasionally a difficult prospect--you may want to scream out for a simplistic Puffy brag or a funky Neptunes hook to take a breather from this never-ending torrent of ideas. Still, it's a mind-bending success that seeks nothing less than to deconstruct and rebuild the discipline of hip-hop from the ground up. --Louis Pattison

An outsiders view.........2007-05-29
By 'outsider' I mean a person who isn't a typically a hip hop listener. My interests being more in things like electronica, industrial and indie I found this disc to be very enjoyable.
I'll admit that the at times abstract lyrics caught my attention, and being a fan of expermental and avant garde material in general I was happy to hear the inventive wordplay.
However what I really like about this disc is the sounds and beats of the record. Occasionally I hear a piece of music that makes my head feel like spinning, and this was one of them(and I mean that in the best way). This isn't normal sounding hip hop, but i'm guessing most people reading this already have that idea. All the blips and beeps, and crazy beats keep you on your toes.
I'm very sad that this group has broken up, finally a hip hop group I would of really have liked to have seen.
An apex for experimental hip-hop.......2005-11-07
2002 was a great year for lots of adventurous sounds in hip-hop, and this is one of few cds from that year that I still can't seem to hear enough of. Unlike many of the "experimental hip hop" acts, APC didn't seem to give up on the key things that I like about rap music - the clever rhymes delivered by people who know how to rap, and the sense of flow within a song. These tracks are at the same time fun, stimulating and minimal. The production is mostly synthesizer-based, which is unusual at a time when many other acts are taking the sample-heavy route. Here it's a refreshing change. You can tell lots of time was taken to make the little moments happen, whether it's a quick blast of digital distortion on the vocals, or sound effect or electronic squiggle to fit in perfectly with the lyrics at a particular point. I often use this cd to get people into 20th century electronic music (Xenakis, etc) & avant-garde to open their ears to hip-hop. It's a shame that APC split up right after bringing the quality of their work to this high point.
TRASH!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-03

Don't buy this. I sold it back. Just from the internet exposure, and what I heard, I thought it to be groundbreaking; no it was earshattering IN THE WORST WAY!!!!!!!! Every song sucks. It's useless.

P.S. Amazon would not let me rate it 0 stars.
Experimentation from the roots of hip-hop.......2005-09-26
The Anti-Pop Consortium returns to the scene with their first full-length release for Warp Records - "Arrhythmia". This is my first exposure to the three emcees/producers (Ball Beans, High Priest and M. Sayyid) that make up this grade A brand of experimental hip-hop. I would like to point out that this is nothing like the experimentation of the Anticon collective. It works much better in the sense that they hold stronger to their hip-hop roots. The music rarely feels intimidating, and they don't try to outsmart their underground/mainstream counterparts (even though they do at times). It's a brilliant fusion between hip-hop and electronica. And although some of the beats are complex, much of the mix is quite minimal. There are rarely more than three elements being mixed at once, which makes it much easier to concentrate on the relentlessly seeping lyrical flows. The balance feels flawless, since the beats and loops brought forth sound very inventive, well-crafted, and on point.
The notable highlights would include the well-cut simplicity of "Ping Pong", "Dead in Motion", "Ghostlawns", the tweaked out notes on "We Kill Soap Scum", and the intoxicating reverb and sick battle rhymes of my personal favorite track "Z St.".
Although the Antipop Consortium will throw hip-hop heads a curve ball, it is nothing that a true fan of hip-hop wouldn't enjoy. It gorgeously represents an inventive minimal approach of familiar elements, which showcases their impressive and unique rhyme styles brilliantly. Definitely a keeper.

Short on actual length...(Big on, inventive material).......2005-04-05
Anti-Pop Consortium are most certainly not your average Rap Collective. Seemingly having a overriding desire to sidestep Rap cliches & desperately avoid being pigeonholed with the rest of the Hip-Hop fraternity, its a nervous balancing of bridging the gap between cutting edge New York hip-hop, and glitchy IDM, coupled with Avant-garde beats/Sounds. The group consist of rappers, Priest, Beans, and M. Sayyid, with producer E. Blaize, handling the substantially angular rhythms.
This is their 2001 EP, which at only 17mins, isn't a whole lot of material to digest, but given that this EP, shows literally more than twice the inventive ideas (& lyrics) than some full length LP's, it's fusing of 'Company Flow' Styled erratic beats, with the Electronica noises of 'Aphex Twin / Squarepusher' & a Glitchy smattering of effects, not too dissimilar to 'Boards of Canada' & 'Autechre', those that tire of listening to Hip-Hop that feels like a series of endless chest beating, with booming bass, would do well to give this extraordinary EP, more than a quick glance.
Anti-Pop, seem to pay as much consideration to the production of their material, as they do to the rapid fire delivery of their compact and combust lyrics. EP opener "Tuff Gong" manages to work a heavily sampled Fog Horn (???), into the fray with edgy almost stuttering beats working against each other, before quickly turning course and thereby switching into computer Data Processing effects. The rappers think nothing of then rhyming on top of all these confrontational sounds, and it certainly catches your attention. "Splinter" arguments slow tempo drum kicks with a very fractured computer bleep effect, thereby a intermittent Casio Keyboard melody sits on top, with Beans, Priest & M. Sayyid, darting vocally in-amongst the relative chaos, this track is one of the perfect examples of the group penchant for Electronic sounds, and Underground Hip-Hop, because its a bizarre welding of volatile rhythms, brought together by visionary ideas.
"Dystopian Disco Force" is an instrumental track that, uses a looping droning Hammond organ arrangement, playing out a abstract angular rhythm, against which the organ drones over. Think more electro-clash than hip-Hop, and that's not before a distorted funk guitar moves over the sound. Its a particularly inventive idea, from a production standpoint and shows how the group's musical ideas, manifest themselves into a genuine expression, with the limitless possibilities within Hip-Hop / Electronica styled composition. "39303" pushes the boat out with rapid fire breakbeats right from the off, before stabs of synth pertrude....remarkably the whole thing beings to gather pace, speeding up to frantic 'Squarepusher/Aphex Twin' styled Drill 'n' Bass, before dropping down in tempo, to a slow heartbeat sounding bass kick over which a Thumping occasional effect, against which the 3 MC's deliver complex wordplay, which given the complexity of the sound, requires multiple listens, but as with every track on this album, is always imaginatively obtuse.
"Pit" with its piercing synth melody drone, takes a little getting used to at first, but the matrix-styled Data stream effects, push this track into 'Company flow /El-P' flavoured dystopian production often employing weird dramatic noises and futuristic synths that clash with the defiantly low-budget production values, its avant-garge Hip-Hop by way of cutting edge-beats and like much of the album demands concentration, to adjust to the unconventional structure of tracks, And remarkably this track is just an instrumental. "Perpendicular" employs off-key beats to get the ball rolling, with a lovely jazz-inflected piano arrangement sitting over the top, before a kick drum combines to shape the track into something a little more conventional (although no less impressive) and bearing in mind that this is another instrumental, it hard to ignore the fact that they may well be forcing people to acknowledge a level of avant-garde experimentalism that is still a niche market genre, and forgets commercial considerations, in favour of pushing the musical boundaries, and striving to be unique. The final track on the EP "Vector" finds the band in rude health, with buzzing distortion starting with insistent beats, thereby which the MC's remain in their element, as their lyrical technique is complex, to the point that it's sometimes nearly impenetrable, confusing the listener with dense passages of sentences & ambiguous statement, that'll take a few listens to decipher. High pitched twittering effects barge their way into the mix, bending & Warping in a slightly disconcerting fashion, with a superbly incorporated mechanical distortion, layered in-between.
And so there you have it, an EP that runs at only a mere 17 minutes, which would probably be enough for most people to give it a miss, but to do so, if you're willing to put in the investment would be foolish, as Anti-Pop make no concessions for those that aren't prepared to put some investment into their albums. Sounds shift, beats remain defiantly angular/glitchy showing as much in common with the IDM (intelligent Dance Music) scenes warped and fractured sounds as it does Hip-Hop. Rhymes are dense rapidly delivered vocal sketches, which are intentionally obtuse, abrasive and confrontational, and yet reward those that are prepared to concentrate, on what's being said. Those that are familiar with the 'Underground / Leftfield' Hip-Hop scene will find much to enjoy here, because allthough not completely steeped in Hip-Hop, its electronic aspirations will just as likely appeal to those that don't usually like traditional Hip-Hop. As a overview of what the group are completely capable of, it's a little too short at 17 Min's, but gives a fantastic insight as to what later albums would include (Wait until you hear "Ping Pong" from the "Arrhythmia" album). But this fantastic EP is easily the best (& cheapest) way to begin to get yourself fully acquainted with this cutting-edge group.

Customer Reviews:
Anti Pop Consortium Strikes back!.......2002-04-22
After the revolutionary Tragic Epilog released in 2000 and the discreet japanese-only second album, Anti Pop's third full-length is exactly what fans were expecting from. Just as innovative, cutting edge and - still - true hip hop. Beans confirms that he's one of the best MC on earth, Priest being probably the most original. M. Sayyid completes perfectly the trio with its sarcastic rhymes. As the cover of their first records say : Our past is your future. I totally agree with that.
