5 out of 5 stars Album of the Year.......2007-07-15

Another solid album from the most consistant band of the last ten years.
Supergrass doesn't disappoint on this departure from earlier work. This is the darker Supergrass a more adult band. They're not the teenagers that got caught by the fuzz anymore but they can still rock as much as any other band still together. You know its them and you know they're evolving and moving in a new direction but hey aren't we all? I'm just glad to be along for the ride and listen to some awesome music.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2006-08-30

The Best Supergrass cd out there. The sound of this cd is like no other. It has a "pop" ish feel that captures attention. Amazing

4 out of 5 stars Short & Sweet.......2006-07-06

This band, once identified with by sullen, but not-too-serious, young stoners, made some really fun, and often rather frivolous music. Like many such groups, it risked the danger of becoming passe and running out of ideas very quickly -- or so I once thought. After turning on to their music through this latest CD, I've actually backtracked to their older stuff, much of which I admit I had only encountered before, in passing, as a music seller at Borders. Back then (late '90's) I did own a CD, which I taped a few songs from and then sold. I especially like the song "Grace," which is on the CD, SUPERGRASS IS 10 (Best Of), which I purchased AFTER hearing ROAD TO ROUEN. The music on this new effort, I'm happy to say, is the kind of work that could only be produced by musicians who have grown up some. It's adult, cogent, melodic and subtle. ROAD TO ROUEN does have some energy, even playfulness here and there, while it reveals a group that is relaxing and mellowing. Upon revisiting their older stuff, I can see why Supergrass have a loyal following. I hope they can keep it! "St. Petersburg" is catchy, and my favorite here, and the last two songs, "Low C" and "Fin" make an excellent, stirring finish. This album may be short, but it's sweet.

4 out of 5 stars Change Of Direction - Good Decision.......2006-05-22

Not your typical Supergrass album in that there isn't really a standout, radio single on the album. This is more of a Sunday morning / 'road' trip through the countryside album that has the group maturing their sound and showing their musical talents in a subtle but easy to embrace sound. If you are looking for a catchy, danceable song; the first song might entice you. Parts of the song have a little bit of a Franz Ferdinand sound. And "Coffee In The Pot" has a silly, happy-go lucky Russian wedding ditty feel to it that only Supergrass could pull off. But for the most part `Road To Rouen' is a smooth, somewhat moody album that might take a few listens to warm up to. The warmth is worth the wait though.

4 out of 5 stars Supergrass returns with a very tight and focused album.......2006-05-13

Supergrass has had an up-and-down career, starting with the blazing debut album "I Should Coco" in 1995, an album they are still trying to live up to, 10 years later. 2002's "Life on Other Planets", their most recent album before this one, divided the Supergrass fans, some thought is was outstanding, others (like me) were quite disappointed.

"Road to Rouen" (9 tracks, 35 min.), issued in Fall, 2005, is a great return to form. The band is highly focused, and sounds re-energized after a 3 year lay-off. While only lasting a little over half an hour, the album brings a LOT, starting with the opener "Tales of Endurance (Parts 4, 5 & 6)" (making you wonder where the first 3 parts are). The other epic song on here is "Roxy", a 6+ min. minutely built song, just beautiful. Interestingly, it is followed by a short and funny instrumental, "Coffee in the Pot", showing that the band hasn't lost its sense of humor. The upbeat title track is a tribute to the fact Supergrass recorded this album in France. The closer "Fin" ("end" in French) is a sweet 'ballad' in the way only Supergrass can bring it.

While a major act in their native England, major success has always eluded Supergrass in the US, and this album has not changed that. Nevermind, "Road to Rouen" is a top-notch album, and highly recommended.

Sporting sideburns almost as big as himself, Gaz Coombes more or less led Supergrass as the trio charged through a very goofy selection of pop-punk; think of them as the Who influenced by 1977 punk, or a British version of Green Day and you're getting somewhere close to the sound. The kids were more than alright, however, having more fun than was probably legal, with choruses that velcroed themselves to the brain ("Alright," "She's So Loose") while still being decidedly off-the-wall. The album included their first two singles, "Caught by the Fuzz" and "Mansize Rooster," just to add to its top pop quotient. --Chris Nickson

4 out of 5 stars I'm Cuckoo for I Should Coco...........2007-03-31

I Should Coco - The debut from Brit-pop trio Supergrass. In 1995 when this was released these Oxford boys were only teenagers creating a burst of delightful energy!
Slick production, fun hooks and fizz galore, a joy to listen all the way through, even though Gaz Coombes vocals shows it's limits. This is the only one to date that made any impact here in the United States. Supergrass' second effort "In It For The Money" is a bit darker and not as mischievious or exciting as "I Should Coco."
They were even offered their own television series by a U.S. TV producer in 1995; kind of like The Monkees in the '60s, but the band wasn't interested in his offer. I think that was a smart decision.
Their Hit Singles include songs "Lenny" - "Caught by the Fuzz" - "Mansize Rooster" & "Alright" - a Teen anthem and HUGELY popular and in heavy rotation on MTV. My absolute favorite song would have to be the opening track - "I'd Like to Know." - Very fast, fun teenage spirit. The only "somewhat" less up-beat song is the closing track "Time to Go" a bit Beatle-esque of a sound.
Truly remarkable! -For me- Somewhere in between 4 & 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars Two fantastic songs, lots of enthusiasm, not much else.......2006-07-12

This CD starts out great, with "I'd Like To Know", a really energetic power-pop song and gets even better with "Caught By The Fuzz". It's a song about getting arrested, but instead of the usual bravado, it's a song about fear and shame, which makes it very uniquely human. I think it's an absolutely excellent song, that's way unappreciated.

For the rest of the CD, well, the band has plenty of energy and enthusiasm, but unfortunately, that isn't enough to make the rest of the songs all that worthwhile. The band has a few more moments, but I found this to be basically a two song CD.

The first two songs are 5+ star songs. The whole CD merits 3 1/2 stars, so in the generous Amazon rating system, it gets 4 stars from me.

I Love Supergrass, Never Change

5 out of 5 stars I'd like to know.......2005-08-29

It's funny how a name sticks in your head sometimes. In my blunted early youth, around when I began college, I heard of a band named Supergrass. Their hit single at the time, Pumping On Your Stereo, was receiving a modest amount of airplay in Los Angeles and I thought the tune was infectious. Fast forward to 2004. I was twenty-three, finished with school and gobbling up as many shows as I could catch in the New York area. Supergrass happened to be playing a show in Manhattan. I remembered Pumping On Your Stereo and quickly bought tickets to the show and their first album, I Should Coco. I read the reviews here and elsewhere and they were unanimously glowing.

What did I think? Well, being a voracious music listener I hope my own glowing review counts in influencing your decision to purchase a Supergrass album. They're all good, by the way, but this one is better than the rest and I recommend you start here. As stated earlier, I Should Coco is the lads' first album and it was written and recorded when frontman Gaz Coombes was still in his teens. This is a key fact you must keep in mind when listening to the record. Doing so will leave you in awe and will help you to appreciate the maturation exhibited on subsequent releases. How could a band of teenagers have their fingers on the pulse of pop music to this high a degree? It is an aberration to say the least. The last lads I saw do pop this well and this melodically went on to an unrivaled legendary status.

But don't let me get ahead of myself. I Should Coco begins sprinting out of the gate. I'd Like to Know, the opener, is so infectious that its hard to believe it was chosen to open the album. One would figure that exhausting this exhuberant a song so early might portend banality later on. Not so. Every subsequent song raises the bar over its predecessor. This album is fun, it is energetic, it is youthful, and it is silly to the point that it will make you smile. To paraphrase, it is everything that pop music should be. Mansized Rooster, Strange Ones, Alright, Lenny, Sit Up Straight, She's So Loose, and Time are all killer. The whole album is a classic and a nugget of the Britpop genre of the early-mid 90's.

It is tantamount to a crime that Supergrass never achieved mainstream recognition in the States but it is also a blessing. It means that those of us lucky enough to hear about Supergrass by keeping our ears to the ground are in on something special that most of our contemporaries are not.

Supergrass may be the unluckiest band to come out of the Britpop wave of the early 1990s. Their first album, I Should Coco, saw the trio typecast as a cartoonish indie boy band propelled to stardom by the adolescent hijinks of "Feel Alright" and "Caught by the Fuzz." Unfortunately, this tag proved rather difficult to shake and as their music matured, their audience dwindled; their second album, In It for the Money, was released to critical acclaim and consumer indifference. By the time Supergrass was released in 1999, the band had already been relegated to the "Oh yeah, I remember those guys" category of pop. What a shame, because Supergrass is at least as good as In It for the Money--and that album was fantastic. Flaunting their '70s-rock influences proudly, Supergrass continue to sound like the world's greatest garage band with a sack full of studio toys. These guys know what makes a good pop song: "Pumping on Your Stereo" is practically shouting out for an audience of handclaps, while "Shotover Hill" makes use of the oft-neglected kettle drum. With Supergrass, the boys have again demonstrated how much they've grown up. Pop music, yes, but definitely not kid's stuff. --Robert Burrow

Album Description

The hit British alternative rock group's third album. Self titled with 12 tracks, including the hit singles 'Pumping On Your Stereo' & 'Moving'. 1999 release. Standard jewel case.

5 out of 5 stars The High-Water Mark (Thus Far).......2005-07-06

You'd think it was a debut album, being self-entitled, but this was actually Supergrass' third studio release and, I would contend, their best. The semi-focused, college-band bounciness of their first outing, "I Should Coco," gave way to the full-out, punk-fun assault of "In It For The Money," and then this. It begins with a lilting, melodic, and atmospheric entre into "Moving," but don't think they've gone soft: Soon the wall of sound comes crashing down into a funky chorus, and you remember who you're listening to. Sonically, lyrically, musically more mature than its predecessors, "Supergrass" features a wealth of stand-alone tracks, but to discuss them individually is to sell the album short, because it has that special brand of "Dark Side of the Moon" full-length playability that few albums achieve. You don't put it on to hear one song; you put it on and let it play. Then, if you're like me, you let it play again.

For those raised on "Alright" from the "Clueless" soundtrack, don't worry: This is fun stuff, but from a more fully-developed band hitting their stride. The subsequent "Life On Planet Earth" was a disappointing follow-up, but it is to be hoped that Supergrass has a few more albums like this one still in the tank. If not, so be it. At least I caught this ride.

(P.S. Turns out, they've got plenty left in the tank: Check out 2005's "Road to Rouen." Supergrass is alive and well.)

5 out of 5 stars I love it........2005-05-19

I personally love it, just listen to the samples there's not much to add to what other people said.

4 out of 5 stars A mixed affair from Supergrass (3.5 Stars).......2004-09-29

Supergrass follow up their second album with a self-titled work that's hard to place sonically. Usually in every Supergrass album a clear distinction can be heard from the previous effort. I Should Coco was Pop-Punk and In It For The Money was Brit-Pop but it's much harder to grasp the sound of Supergrass and while it bears more than a passing resemblance to its predecessor, it's also somehow different. Supergrass has relaxed their style in some places by creating deeper grooves with the instrumentation focused more on the band itself, with its acoustic guitars and funky basslines, and removed the sharper elements of orchestration featured on In It For The Money, giving the album a very lush sound. This new sound makes it hard to place in a genre like all the other albums but that's not the problem here. There are simply too many weak songs and lethargic moments on this album for it to be considered as good as its predecessors. There's the obvious "Moving," "Mary," and "Pumping On Your Stereo" but other than that there isn't too much that stands out. The half-baked "What Went Wrong (In Your Head)" and "Beautiful People" could have been great songs but they wander aimlessly without a fully satisfying result. And while there are moments of beauty on this disc (see "Shotover Hill"), a lot of the songs really just don't hold together. Even still, the songs that work are some of the best in Supergrass' canon. Supergrass is still a worthwhile album by any measure but in comparison to their first two brilliant releases, it may appear to be a slip up.

SUPERGRASS is the real ndeal folks!! Brit rock at it finest!!!!{i wasnt paid anything for this tribute..}

4 out of 5 stars I Love Me Some Supergrass.......2004-01-15

Having seen Supergrass open for Radiohead in West Palm a few months back, I have to confess that I'm now very addicted to them. I bought this cd first and listened to it 2 or 3 times before getting 'hooked'. It's different and strange and it takes a couple of listens to insinuate itself into your brain--after that, you're doomed! :) "Eon" and "Jesus Came From Outta Space" are my current favorites off of this cd.

Life on Other Planets is their next cd, and it is nearly a masterpiece, from beginning to end! I highly recommend that one as well....just ordered their first two cd's, and wish they'd hurry up and crank out another one.

In many ways Supergrass are the Britpop superstars who best embody the youthfulness and positivity supporters generally claim for the movement. Their 1995 debut album, I Should Coco, offered "Alright," as purely feel-good an anthem as even Noel Gallagher had written. Two years later Supergrass are still in their 20s but eager to let us know they've grown. Their follow-up to Coco, In It for the Money, does contain "Tonight," an unambiguous anthem to partying. At the same time, while they haven't transformed themselves into an earnest outfit like the later Manic Street Preachers, Money's more measured approach is accompanied by a heightened sense of drama, if not a newfound gravity. Small helpings of horns and keyboards aid in communicating a finesse, even on a raver like "Richard III," that the earlier record barely acknowledged. While the acoustic-guitar-based "Late in the Day" is burdened by lines about "searching my mind," their larger passions are successfully communicated on "Sun Hits the Sky"--which, tellingly, is more rocking. This is, after all, Supergrass, whose sense of self-deprecating humor is still in force on In It for the Money: in the CD booklet, a potted plant is depicted as their fourth member. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars a defining album...........2006-06-23

after the 'grass's first album, a fun, sarcastic romp through the britpop weeds, i was uncertain where they would go next, and that was based on the assumption they actually *would* go somewhere. for as fun as 'i should coco' was, it was two or three steps away from being a novelty album. with songs like 'caught by the fuzz,' 'man-sized rooster,' and 'sofa for my lethargy,' i feared the 'grass was a band of perpetual teenagers and frat-boys who happened to write great rock 'n roll tunes with goofy subject matter.

happily, the second album, 'in it for the money,' a tongue-in-cheek album title, destroyed any notion that the 'grass were a one-album-wonder and that they would wade in their own goofiness. 'money,' instead, proved that the 'grass were 1st rate musicians--you'd be hard-pressed to find an album of solid and interesting songcrafting and musicianship. they defy any conventional songwriting techniques. top to bottom sure they look like planet of the apes redux, but don't let the looks fool you -- gaz *shreds* on the guitar. he's one of rock's great frontmen, and nowhere is more evident that on 'in it for the money. furthermore, the rhythm section is tight, melodic and prodigiously talented. 'richard iii' is a huge song, as its follower 'tonight.' they're classic rock songs in the true sense. 'late in the day' starts off as an acoustic ballad before exploding into a piano-driven, rollicking song. 'the sun hits the sky' is another husky, sunny guitar number complete with a dizzying organ solo courtesy of gaz's brother. 'cheapskate' is another infectious three-minute single, and 'you can see me' is yet another great example of the 'grass relentlessly interesting songcrafting.

what makes 'in it for the money' so great, aside from it's impeccable songs, is the sense of energy, fun, and even a bit of danger. the trio, now a four-man group, is criminally underrated--both at home and in the u.k. they never became the britpop pastiche so many of their peers did. they never brought out the brass and strings. they never wrote about laddism. they never drifted into broody, cinematic territory. straight up rock 'n roll. nothing more, nothing less. twelve years into their career they continue to make great rock 'n roll. let's hope they do it another twelve years. and to think they made 'in it for the money' while still in their early twenties is nothing short of a marvel.

if you can get 'in it for the money' with the bonus disc, do. 'sex' is one of the funniest songs i've ever heard. ever.

4 out of 5 stars Supergrass defy "sophmore slump" with second release.......2005-09-11

In It For The Money, a riff on the Montey Python-esque Beatles spoof of the same name, has been hailed as Supergrass' masterpiece. I Should Coco, their first album, was a masterpiece that displayed brilliance albeit sophmoric brilliance. In It For The Money abandons most of the punk silliness of its predecessor in favor of melody driven alternative pop. Many have compared Supergrass to Green Day; a comparisson I have never quite understood. You see, Supergrass, on only their second album, achieve a maturity that Green Day hadn't until their most recent album, American Idiot. Supergrass opens the album with the song of the same name. The droning opener establishes what has become a Supergrass trademark -- coming out fast from the gates -- and the album rarely lets up from here on in. This is most evident on the anthemic Richard III. While frontman Gaz Coombes has never been a lyrical master, on this track he pens a slogan (I know you wanna try and get away, but its the hardest thing you'll ever do) for the post-modern, technology-driven age of alineation that is today. Other strong tracks that will drive you insane because they'll be stuck in your head for days are Late In the Day, Sun Hits The Sky, Its Not Me, and You Can See Me. Unfortunately, the third track, Tonight, returns Supergrass to their Coco days of youth and as a consequence, I feel it is one of the weakest tracks on the album. On the flip side, you must check out one of the most insanely catchy songs ever written, Cheapskate, which basically embodies everything that makes Supegrass a great band. Supergrass is an amazing band, with their ability to sound retro and contemporary at the same time. This is one of the strongest albums in their cannon and although I Should Coco and LOOP are better, I recommend this album as essential to your record collection.

5 out of 5 stars In It For The Money (1997).......2005-04-14

When the British press go on about BritPop, and that ever expected re-invasion of American shores by a wave of British bands 'par excellence', the names Oasis, Blur and Pulp are always pushed forward as the Great White Hopes of their generation.

Personally, the only band I ever bought albums by in that wave of groups, was Supergrass.

To me they were the only band writing truly creative, innovative pop, while harnessing all the tools of the trade that other British invasions proved were successful. With an Oasis song, I always heard the song it previously was by another band or two. With Blur, I could always pull out the David Bowie or XTC album the song[s] were reminiscent of, or blatantly inspired by. With Pulp, I just truly found them a bit boring, nothing that The Kinks hadn't done 10x better back in the 60's. But with Supergrass, even if I could name the influence (and The Kinks are certainly in there), I absolutely thought the song[s] were incredibly catchy, totally Supergrassed, and most bands would love to have at least 3 songs of that quality on an album, let alone issue album after album of strong material track to track.

Supergrass, to me, is Britain's Great White Hope. Their style and influence comes from the Bowie's, Bolan's, Pink Floyd's and Davies' of the pop world, but its the absolute quality of the songs one after the other that says Supergrass takes, but gives back. And its very rare that a group's 2nd album outshines their debut, but this album does this. Their 3rd and 4th albums push that envelope even further, but its wiser to start off with their debut album, or this one, to get what it means to get Supergrassed.

It's sheer pop, and I have never minded the 'slightly kooky' nature of the Supergrass material or its members, because underneath all of that is a band who is immensely creative with their studio time, plants hooks galore in its songs (and there's always something placed in a Supergrass song that is instantly latchable), and mixes their albums with diverse, and always interesting material. The 60's, 70's, and 80's are all covered, sometimes within one song, but it always sounds like Supergrass. One could say that of any of the Britpop bands, especially with Liam Gallagher's ''vocal'' stylings in Oasis (not particularly a fan), but with Supergrass it sounds unique. It sounds different, and not so reliant on The Hype, but more on The Music, and the creativity of the writers.

And ''Richard III'' is an anthem. Maybe in 20 years time, it'll be recognised as that anthem, or at least nostalgically remembered as the anthem that could've been, but from beginning to end, the song screams 'make me a standard', 'play me incessantly until people get sick of me', 'make me an institution'. From its theremin guided Bridge section, to its hard driving opening, ''Richard III'' sets the Supergrass standard above its more celebrated peers. Unfortunately for Supergrass's peers, there's a lot more material on this album that matches that standard. Basically, Supergrass's only competition is itself. And that's what being creative is 50% about. The other 50% is enjoying it.

5 out of 5 stars Can't get these songs out of my head.......2004-12-01

Simply one of the best releases in the last ten years. This is unarguably Supergrass' magnum opus, their brilliant masterpiece. If you like infectious melodic British pop-rock with retro '60s and '70s references (yet at the same time freshly modern), you will LOVE Supergrass. Head-scratchingly all but ignored in the U.S. (but then again--not surprising, given Capitol's slow-upgrade treatment of The Beatles' rich catalog), the talented band remains one of Britain's finest in recent years. The 2-CD version (with 9 bonus tracks) is worth seeking out.

3 out of 5 stars Apparently, some confusion.......2007-07-22

I have recently bought the Village Green EP without having heard it before. I thought a band being inspired by the classic Kinks album must be a good idea and I had high hopes for a unique Kinks-sounding brand of rock & roll. They really don't sound like the Kinks to me and they definitely don't sound like "The Village Green Preservation Society". That isn't necessarily a bad thing, however, and the song, "Get Up, Get Out, Get High" is worth the cost of the EP. It is a fantastic romp that sounds like a classic, immediatley. [...]

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic album!!.......2006-01-07

I just saw Allard perform solo at a small venue in Seattle one night after the band performed a sold-out show. I dug the songs and went out and got their debut CD right away. The band reminds me of Oasis - the tunes are as catchy if not more and the lyrics are way better i.e. no "champagne supernova in the sky"!! I have no doubt that The Village Green will make it big and be heard on the airwaves very soon.

4 out of 5 stars A good "greatest hits" album.......2007-01-09

A great overall collection if you have few of their other albums. The only problem is, the album does not flow (like most compilation albums) and I keep skipping to the tracks I want to hear. This greatest hits album is a great way to start a library of the fun-loving band.

5 out of 5 stars Supergrass are following the Beatles path into the new millenium..........2006-10-27

...yes, the Beatles by which I'm not comparing Supergrass to them. No, Supergrass are riding the road built by not only The Beatles, but other British rock'n'roll greats like The Kinks, David Bowie, The Zombies and many others. But the exploding energy of Supergrass delivers a deeply satisfying listen that does not exist as frequently in the present 2000's. This will definitely be a group that will represent the virtouso side of British rock'n'roll of the 1990's and 2000's, and without doubt represent the Bohemia-Intellectual-Hard Rocking spark that has lighten recent generations that has been going on since Circa-Sgt. Pepper. An intoxicating and highly addictive album. 100% recommended for anyone any age.

3 out of 5 stars The Irresistible?.......2006-07-06

Once again I took the reviewers participation as my ruler for selection. Oh yes, according to the devoted reviewers this album was something special, good stuff! So I bought it...and to my dismay it was a whole lot of songs in poorly recorded medium with touches here and there of quality. Nothing less, nothing more. My idea of a powerful double album? Something like Led's Zeppelin Physical Graffity (is that the name? I always seem to be a little buzzed and been known to alter titles and names-but not intentionally, mind you!) Too many songs in this double album sound like fillers, badly recorded (specially), and uneventful. But like I said once in a while the listener is treated to an above average piece of music. Sometimes two good songs will elevate the overall rating but they better be that good! No wonder I had not heard of Supergrass all that often. They are right there with so many other bands I can not begin to differentiate one from the other. I can understand that everyone has their own opinion and Supergrass (I first liked them for their name for they conjure images of some powerfull stuff!) to them might be the second coming, so please do not think I am the anti-whatever. Supergrass sounded average overall, perhaps their latest studio album would have been a better way to hear what they can or can not do in terms of sound quality and songwriting ability. As it is, the double album has a lot of live music that is poorly recorded. Will I ever buy another album by Supergrass? It would have to be endorsed by the most serious reviewers and make quite a splash to make me dish out the "moola". Everyone seems to adore them but me. What is wrong with me? Actually a whole lot of things but not my taste in good sounds, that is an instinct I have preserved and nurtured for far too long to doubt myself at this stage of the game. Great music is great music! Simple as that and Supergrass double album just do not raises above to fit in that category. If every cd is going to be a near 5 star then why do I keep hearing some shi..y music? Too many songs, not enough talent to fill the album, 3 stars!

5 out of 5 stars How could I have missed this?.......2006-03-13

Wow, this is some good stuff. A British band that we Americans either knew nothing about or chose to ignore but don't ignore this one , please! "Supergrass is 10: The Best of 94-04" is, well, just super. Add it to your collection because you won't regret it for a minute. Supergrass is probably one of the best British based guitar rock groups that has risen to the top in the last fifteen or so years. Don't forget to give a listen to some clips here on Amazon, then you will decide for yourself. Glad I discovered this set when I did because I was starving for something new and different. I was not disappointed and hopefully you won't be either.

4 out of 5 stars Good Fun Music With A Catchy Beat.......2006-03-06

Supergrass is simply fun, rhythmically compelling music with a prominent sense of humor, put together with a lot of musical skill and studio savvy. The best track is "Kiss of Life", a somewhat Talking Heads-like song which is alone worth the price of admission. The rest of the songs here are not in that style but are just as good. Nothing deep here from these Brits, but there's always early Genesis if you're in that mood. This is '90's fluff elevated to its ultimate tongue-in-cheek best and given its most clever and flavorful incarnation.

Life on Other Planets is proof positive that you just never know what a band has in them. While the notoriously blunted Supergrass have always produced vividly screaming pop, their songs never followed an arc, instead flashing their moments of knuckleheaded brilliance before shuffling off in another direction. While Life on Other Planets, their fourth disc, has the band's goofball hallmarks--random coughs, braying animals, and mashed potato references, to name three--the songs go somewhere, and they yank us along with them. From the galloping chorus in "Grace," to the rickety handheld percussion and soft phrasings of "Evening of the Day," and the zippy distorted guitar lead in "Rush Hour Soul," Supergrass offers complete pop pictures with enormous detail and lots of instrumental extras. And the songs really rock. Plus, it's hard not to be staggered by a group that cagily writes about offbeat topics like expired witches ("Brecon Beacons") and life among the dead ("Prophet 15") while remembering to make those bridges and choruses soar. --Kim Hughes

5 out of 5 stars It all stated a few years back.......2005-11-26

I was in grade 7 or 8 and I heard Grace by Supergrass on Muchmusic and i thought it was decent. A year passed & I still remember the band name and the song so I downloaded it....That's when I fell in love. I have listened to this cd so many times that when I do listen to it now I save it for a special occasion

Check out the video for Rush Hour Soul, it's crazy!

5 out of 5 stars grass smoke some new .......2005-11-22

supergrass life on other planets the album which featured the great single "grace" which sounded like t.rex KOOL i've got all their albums..but really i only listen too this and "in it for the money" because they have the less radio-friendly popness too them and have a dark twist on "in it for the money" and on this album you have the sparkly guitars yet a rockier sound a modern day classic by a britpop band who's shed it's label

4 out of 5 stars Great rock 'n roll... .......2005-03-05

Criminally under-rated album from a criminally under-rated band. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Better with age..........2004-11-01

Supergrass is one of the best bands active today. Their sound is both retro and current. Not only can they make catchy music, but their musicianship is second to none. That said, this release took a few listens to grow on me, but it has certainly done that. Each time it takes its place in my car's CD player, it stays there for weeks at a time. I feel this is one of their better releases, and I anxiously await the next...

4 out of 5 stars New direction but songcraft suffers (4 Stars).......2004-09-29

Like every Supergrass album, Life On Other Planets takes the Supergrass formula of quirkiness and pop-masterworks and combines them with a new style. This time around it's glam rock but there's still fewer shining examples of Supergrass' wonderful songcraft than on their first two releases. Half of the album's great, while the rest is either good, bad, or even worse: filler. Songs like "Can't Get Up" and "Funniest Thing" feel half finished while "Evening Of The Day" is a purposeful parody of a parody that isn't funny as much as it is annoying, annoying being a term rarely found in any intelligent description of a Supergrass song. Although this is by far the most inconsistent release of Supergrass' career, the highs found here match and even outweigh the lows. The singles "Rush Hour Soul," "Seen The Light," "Never Done Nothing Like That Before," and "Grace" are all great additions to the Supergrass library. The wonderful "Za" and the gloomy funk of "Breacon Beacons" are also stand out tracks that make this album definitely worth owning. With "La Song" there are elements of the worse tracks featured here with a boring start that is almost unbearable after hearing what the rest of the song sounds like. This is an accurate representation of LOOP as a whole, some parts being fantastic, others being plain or grating. For the most part though this is a good album, if inconsistent. It is unsettling to see sketchy material on a Supergrass release and their production is a bit irksome in some spots but Life On Other Planets also confirms that Supergrass will never lose their touch for writing some of the most memorable pop songs of all time, should you be paying attention.

Album Details

The Fourth Album from the English Power Pop Trio have their Influences Moving Squarely to the 70's, with the Ghost of Marc Bolan Pervading Here Throughout. It's their Most Mature Work to Date and Only Finds them Perfecting their Songwriting and Artistry Even More. 5 out of 5 stars Another great album from my favorite band!!!!!.......2003-01-28

Supergrass is utterly AMAZING. Gaz Coombes is a great singer/songwriter. Danny's drumming and Mick's bass playing is as forceful as always. Robert Coombes' keyboards give this album a more "electronic" feel than "In It For The Money". Even more so than their self titled. I guess it's because he joined the band just in time for their self titled album to be recorded. It's definitely the most fun album they've put out. More people seem to be into them now that this album was released. I used to think I was the only fan here in Suburban America, but they're popping up everywhere! While this album isn't as good as "In it for the Money", it still holds it's ground as a fun album to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars A Planet Worth Visiting.......2003-01-28

Young upstart rockers wondering how to incorporate their influences into their own sound could do to have a listen to Supergrass' Life on Other Planets. After two hit-and-miss CD's (I Should Coco, We're In It for the Money), Gaz Coomes and his power trio started to find their power on their eponymous and effervescent third release. With Life on Other Planets, Supergrass channel their glam jones into a solid collection, certainly the best sequenced of their CD's. You'll hear Bowie in here, a bit of Roxy Music, and lots of Marc Bolan. But Supergrass don't traffic in high concepts, the allure of decadence, or opuses to space travel. They have a light talent and a buoyant spirit, which never flags over the course of twelve songs. And when they have something to impart - as all clowns sometimes do - they don't make you suffer for it. Just throw it in during the next rave towards a blissful chorus.

5 out of 5 stars best cd in the past ten years!.......2003-01-25

This cd blew me away and it is by far Supergrass best. It starts off strong, and finishes even stronger. The songs are so catchy and creative and a lot of fun to listen to. This is a type of cd that you listen from the beginning to the end at one sitting. It works best that way because it's album-oriented, not singles-oriented like most cds are. All the songs are good but my three favorite ones are more at the end, with Grace, La Song, and Prophet 15. Supergrass proved they are one of the best bands in rock-n-roll but unfortunately, they are non-existent in America. If anyone is tired of the music industry right now, this is the cd to get.

5 out of 5 stars Much staying power from this power trio........................2003-01-03

This is one damn good album, Killer hooks bounce thru the speakers, twisted vocals, just a superlative listen. These guys are incapable of making a lousy record. If you're already a fan, you need this bad, if just starting with them, make sure you part with your dockets & get everythign else by the best band from the UK since The Jam. All releases are indispensable.
enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Best rock album I've heard since "Supergrass".......2002-12-10

Anybody that says that Supergrass are too poppy and simple are obviously missing the point. They are the kings of pop, and they know it. There is no other band out there right now that sounds anything like them, and there never has been. The reason Supergrass still haven't broken a market is because the media still can't compare them to someone else, which is how they fit other bands into nicely taylored categories.

Their melodies are more complex than they've ever been given credit for. They are beautiful. Their song structuring is second to none. Supergrass are, in short, unquestionably talented and masters at what they do, which is create utterly stunning pop tunes.

This album is pure Supergrass through and through. A shiver ran down my spine when I heard the first track, "Za". Supergrass are back, finally! We need Supergrass. Forget The Hives, forget The White Stripes. Do yourself a favor and never listen to anything other than Supergrass ever again. You'll thank me for it. They *are* rock 'n' roll, and "Life On Other Planets" proves it.

Supergrass, how I've missed you.
