Maybe this music by Prince & the Revolution will never quite sound as, well, revolutionary as it did in 1984 (and nothing else has ever sounded like the extraordinary cooing and fluttering of "When Doves Cry"), but it's a pop landmark in Prince's Artist-ic career. The hit movie was really just a big-screen showcase for Prince to perform these songs (some of them in tear-the-roof-off "live" versions set in a Minneapolis club). I don't know why that warped sermonette introduces "Let's Go Crazy" (one thing you've got to love about Prince: he's always been weird), but somehow I'm glad it's there. Other highlights include the sexual scorcher "Darling Nikki" (with its crazy backwards coda) and that anthemic title tune. Don't you miss Wendy and Lisa, too? --Jim Emerson

Funk-rock-jazz classic! .......2007-06-27

This was, of course, Prince's breakthrough album, packed with huge hits: two #1's ("When Doves Cry", a bassless dance track; sterling funk-rocker "Let's Go Crazy"), one #2 (the slow, moving title track), and another Top 10 hit to boot ("I Would Die 4 U", Messianic but catchy), as well as the infamous "Darling Nikki" (which transcends "sexually suggestive") that spurred friggin' Tipper Gore to start the PRMC (an insult to everyone who believes in freedom of speech).Needless to say, it was huge -while I wasn't around during the decade, I think it was an '80s pop culture touchstone and certainly the album that made Prince a household name. It's also quite creative - check the bizarre ending to "Darling Nikki", which sounds like they chopped up and rearranged tapes or the one-ma nfunk-rock jam "Computer Blue". Add that to Prince's guitar, bass and keyboard playing everywhere (only Eddie Hazel is a better funk-rock guitarist) - particularly his guitar soloing on "When Does Cry"; "Computer Blue" and the title song. He's possibly the most talented multi-instrumentalists of our time, though Eric Dolphy and Brian Jones are stiff competitors. Topping it off is "The Beautiful Ones", a personal favorite of mine - it's one of the most intense, cathartic songs I've ever heard. So much for my perception of the '80s being totally soulless. Anyway, my only complaint - and a small one at that - is "Take Me With U" - not a bad song, but disarmingly sunny. Doesn't at all fit in with the rest of the album. Still, if this isn't his best album, it's second to Dirty Mind. (Oh, almost forgot the party song "Baby I'm a Star" - yet another standout song, the most traditional funk song here).

i love purple rain that and still is the best movie and soundtrack. i love darling nikki and beautiful ones. i love this movie. the other two movies was ok. prince is still sexy with the hip huggers and heels. no other man can wear that and be sexy. he is still handsome after all these years. i have been listening to prince since the 70's when he first came out. to all the fans purple rain was the movie of the decade. i love under the cherry moon also.

Greatest Album!.......2007-04-12

I love Prince and the movie Purple Rain, so naturally I would get it. The cd is worth every penny, I love every song on the ablum. It's truly one of those albums where you can listen to the entire thing without having to skip over songs you don't like which is rare. I recommend this cd to all Prince fans and Purple Rain lovers.

What a great soundtrack...brings me back to the age of 14, but who cares! The songs that were not overplayed on the radio are even better than the ones that were, but "When Doves Cry" will always be a fave no matter what - add it to your collection!

What can I say that the other 166 reviewers already haven't?

One thing, the greatest travesty in all of music... The title track "PURPLE RAIN" only hit #2 on the charts.

My wife of the past 10 wonderful years was my high school sweetheart at the time. She had a boyfriend and was seeing me on the side and couldn't quite break it off with him. Well we went to the Prince concert at the now "gone" Market Square Arena in Indianapolis (most famous as the site of Elvis Presley's last concert). The greatest moment was when Prince was singing "Do you want him, or do you want me, cause baby I want you" it was like he was just singing to us. I looked into her eyes and knew I would never love another like her and never have.

Buy the album, buy the Dvd, also (much harder) find the live concert VHS that has an almost 20 minute version of Purple Rain at the end of it.

Wasn't the purple "rain" at the Superbowl awesome?

Great bang for the buck.......2007-07-25

Given the inconsistency of the Purple line-up through the years, it's quite amazing that they didn't end up second-rate hack acts playing at obscure county fairs or dingy bars trying to make ends meet. Somehow this outfit has retained its popularity, and the budget priced "The Very Best Of Deep Purple" is a great compilation. While it doesn't contain material from "Come Taste The Band" that featured the late Tommy Bolin or any Steve Morse-era material, currently Purple's lead guitarist, the focal point of Jon Lord's trademark organ and Ritchie Blackmore's slicing leadwork make this a very solid collection, indeed.
Of course, "Smoke On the Water" is here, but so are lots of other gems, including their first hit "Hush", a great reworking of Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman", and "Burn", all great tracks.
The set closes with "Knocking At Your Back Door", from "Perfect Strangers", the album that reunited the classic line-up from "Machine Head" and "Made In Japan". Ian Gillan is one of rock's great vocalists, and the best Purple ever had. He still sings for them today.
The other must-have CD is their live masterpiece "Made In Japan", with much tougher versions of "Highway Star" and "Smoke On The Water", and a real space jam on the 20 minute plus "Space Truckin'". Reacquaint yourself with this great band or introduce yourself today.

The Title Says It All.......2007-06-06

This is a great intro to one of rock's greatest band. For a single CD, this is the one to one. It truely is the very best of purple.

A tale of two concerts.......2007-05-16

For whatever reason, the footage of the Copenhagen concert rarely shows Ritchie Blackmore playing, even during his intros or solos. Somebody needs to track that cameraman down and slap him silly. The New York concert footage is better, but the majoity of the tracks on this DVD come from the Copenhagen show. Overall this DVD is a disappointment, enjoyable sometimes, but a disappointment nonetheless.

The very, very, very best?.......2007-02-02

Well, yes and no! There're a couple of things that you should know about this release: first, the liner notes claim that this is the first collection of the CD era, which is not entirely true, since the previous "Deepest Purple" compilation was already available (However, the remastering is most welcome!). And that's probably my only complaint (I would actually rate this item with 4 and a half stars, but since the format won't allow me to do that...) about this compilation: it offers very little additional material, only 3 songs that were not included in "Deepest...".

Its title notwithstanding, this CD is a "greatest hits" compilation and not (necessarily) "The Very best", but semantics aside, there are a couple of exceptions of songs that were not issued as singles (Space Trucking and Child in Time, for instance...). I originally didn't care much for the covers of "Kentucky Woman" and "Hush", but I understood their inclusion here since those were the first hits the band scored with in the U.S (the territory this CD is meant for). But the tunes eventually grew on me, leading me to get their first 3 records.

It's a shame that no additional material from the band's second coming in the 80's could be included though, but that is simply a record company issue: the latter part of Purple's catalog was released with a different record label. In the end, this is a great compilation, and if you want to have a taste of some of Purple's best material, this is a good place to start. However, if you, like me, were looking for a more comprehensive package, including music from all the lineups (including the criminally underrated Mk IV, completely ignored here...), you might be a bit disappointed...You can always get the boxet "Shades", but... that's a different tale... But casual fans looking for nothing but the hits rejoice: here they are!!! And for roughly 8 bucks, you can't really ask for more...

Rock And Roll At Its Best.......2006-12-07

One of the biggest and best bands of the late 1960s' / early 1970s' classic rock movement was undoubtedly Deep Purple. Featuring some of the finest musicians rock hard to offer as well as one of the best lead singers ever (Ian Gillan), in their heyday they were truly a force to be reckoned with.

This 16 track colection collects all of Deep Purple's most popular hits, such as "Hush", "Kentucky Woman", the epic "Child In Time", "Highway Star", the legendary "Smoke On The Water" (a song that joins "Stairway To Heaven" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" as one of the echelons of overplayed classic rock anthems, which is not to say it's a bad song), "My Woman From Tokyo" and many others. The sound quality is fantastic, and the liner notes make for a really good read.

I highly recommend this collection.

On paper, this adaptation of Alice Walker's best-selling novel has all the markings of a hit. It makes Oprah Winfrey's debut as a theater producer, the libretto is by Marsha Norman (Night Mother), and the lyrics and music are by a trio of seasoned pop pros: Allee Willis (the eccentric woman behind "Neutron Dance" and the theme from Friends), Stephen Bray (who worked on such Madonna hits as "True Blue" and "Express Yourself"), and Brenda Russell (the smooth soul-jazz songstress behind "Piano in the Dark"). That team has put together a series of fairly catchy songs that may lack depth but adeptly handle various idioms like gospel ("Mysterious Ways"), R&B ("Push Da Button"), and African rhythms ("African Homeland"). Though the inspirational vibe can get a bit much, softening the edges and preventing genuine artistic complexity, The Color Purple is a great showcase for its cast. As Celie, LaChanze delivers one of her usual sensitive performances, but watch also for Elisabeth Withers-Mendes's Shug--who sings a passionate paean to Celie ("Too Beautiful for Words")--and Renée Elise Goldsberry's Nettie (duetting with LaChange on "African Homeland"). Surprisingly void of any real emotion it is very easy to hear that there are 3 different composer/lyrisists at work here. The music is still very listenable but it's too bad Fantasia wan't in the original cast. If you heard her performance on the Tonys you will know what real emotion is about and what is lacking on this CD

Having scored a massive hit with their debut album, Core, Stone Temple Pilots returned to the same sludge-filled well for Purple, only to come up with an album that's harder, more concise, and filled with thunderous, punishing riffs. Headbangers will rejoice over the grinding guitars of "Meatplow," "Vasoline," "Lounge Fly," and "Unglued," but the album reveals far more than one dimension. They back off the throttle for the hushed (though still intense) "Pretty Penny," "Big Empty" puts a respectable spin on the phrase "power ballad," and the catchy, hook-filled "Interstate Love Song" asserts itself as one of the most memorable alt-rock singles of the '90s. --Daniel Durchholz

It's good to see decent "modern" rock albums like this one are still getting some play. Nobody cares about Haddaway or The Real McCoy anymore, but all the decent rock albums from the era are still being discovered again and again.

This is one of the essentials. Get it.

STP delivers on their second album........2007-03-15

Stone Temple Pilots have always been indebted to grunge, when their first album came out it was during the time when grunge exploded into the music scene with bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam having success and many critics loved them, unfortunately the critics hated STP despite thier huge success. STP however did not care about the critics and made their own music just the way they wanted it and thats why they have become a favorite among fans including myself I consider them to be one of the greatest rock groups of all time, STP has managed to surpass the first excellent album Core and made a complete masterpiece with Purple an album that has no filler songs and manages to rock out loud more than ever. The songcraft and great lyrics from Scott Wieland is what makes this an essential album, anyway the album starts of with two of my fav STP songs ever Meat plow and Vasoline two hard hitting tracks the way that Dean Deleo and Robert Deleo both come up with some nice and memorable melodies and hooks, it sound very tight and concise its just great and then you have Lougefly which is a very psychedelic sounding track and the then the hit single Interstate love song which is like a semi-hard rock ballad which is very catchy. Still remains is another ballad where Scott sings "I beg for you", then its the accoustic rock song Pretty penny.

On the second half of the album we have the very omnious and forboding song about alienation and loneliness called Big empty which is yet another great song "Time to take a ride that leaves today no conversation" this song is a classic, the next song Silver gun superman is just a straight ahead rock song which is terrific, I'm not going to describe the other songs cause I don't want to write a long review. By the way if you're a STP or Guns and roses fan then you might want to know that Velvet Revolver is going to release a new album called Libertad (which means freedom in Spanish) its coming out this year maybe in june or july.

Mindless jock rock masterminded by a dope fiend. This kind of crap couldn't even sell a can of Coke these days. Choreographed crunches of noise as lame as a crackhead on crutches. I hear Scott weiland kept a billy goat in his trailer during the making of this snoozer -- and that when recording was all done the goat was nowhere to be found, but Scotty was sporting a fresh new goatie.

Stp outdid themselves.......2006-10-25

I loved core when it came out. When they released purple i was excited and could not wait. I did not expect it to be better then core but was I wrong. This in my oppinion is still there best album. It has rockers like meatplow and vasolin it has slower songs like interstate love song and pretty penny. I know they were part of the grunge sceen in the 90's but they were much more than that. Here in 2006 this album is still an outstanding listen. Do your self a favor and purchase this album if you dont already own it.

Album Description

"Everything Is Illuminated" is the directorial debut of actor Liev Schrieber and an adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's best-selling novel. A blend of high comedy and great tragedy, the film tells the story of a young American man, played by Elijah Wood (The Lord of The Rings trilogy), who journeys to the Ukraine to find the woman whom he believes saved his grandfather from the Nazis all those years ago.

The soundtrack features two new songs from high energy New York City based gypsy punks Gogol Bordello, including one track not on their current cd. (Note: Gogol Bordello's lead singer plays a role in "Everything Is Illuminated"). Also included are gypsy folk songs from Russia and the Ukraine by Leningrad, Arkadie Severmie, Csokolom and Tin Hat Trio. And finally, Paul Cantelon's ethnic score ties together this nicely cohesive soundtrack.

Passionate, inspired and exotic, this soundtrack truly captures the spirit of the movie as well as Safran Foer's brilliant first novel; it resonates with longing, heartbreak, and a totally unique sensibility; highly recommended.
