Not Bernstien and not for serious listeners.......2003-06-30
I ordered this cd (used) mainly to get the Glinka capriccio (assumedly) by Bernstein, thinking I might enjoy the orchestral versions from Carmen as well. Received the disk and was shocked to see the name Andre Kostelanetz on it...only couple tracks are by Bernstein. The pieces are mostly played at a breakneck tempo that tramples the music. The recording quality is poor. Sounds like a studio remix where the players were recorded at different times. This CD is a poor choice; even in the bargain bin; even for casual listeners. There are much better played and recorded orchestrations of these Spanish-themed works available.
Pristinely Beautiful.......2002-03-12
This is really a beautiful recording. I am not an opera expert, but during the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics I was transfixed by the Carmen music that Sasha Cohen skated her Long Program to. I simply had to hear it again as soon as possible, and saw this "Carmen Without Words" CD on Amazon. This CD does not have any "libretto", or words. It is just a Carmen 'suite' of the tunes from the opera. Opera connoisseurs will probably want to order a multi-disc set of the entire unabridged Carmen opera, but for opera hacks like myself this CD is perfect for enjoyable times in front of the computer or while reading magazines, to just enjoy Carmen's great tunes. The sound is clean, crisp, and the music is perfectly played by Andre Kostelanetz and his orchestra. It's amazing how well they play, actually, it borders on perfect. Anyway, you are sure to love this CD. It is lovely to listen to, and I don't see how anything about it could disappoint you. By the way, the CD also contains four bonus tracks from several other composers to really top it all off.
WONDERFUL CD!.......2002-01-19
THIS IS A GREAT CD FOR THOSE WHO, LIKE ME, JUST WANT TO HEAR THE MUSIC FROM OPERA WITHOUT THE SINGING. I PLAY IT OVER AND OVER ALONG WITH THE OTHER "OPERA WITHOUT WORDS" CDS.

Pretty average stuff.......2007-06-24
No Exit is pretty average 80s metal. It's not bad but there's nothing all that great about it either. Maybe their newer stuff is better, I don't know, but this album has made a bad first-impression on me.

Brilliant Metal.......2007-05-18
That is probably the easiest way to describe this CD. "Brilliant Metal" While throwing in the crazy time signature riffs of Dream Theater and Symphony X years before either had formed, yet getting heavier than any of their previous albums, Fates Warning created a new genre with this work of art. I bought this CD mainly for The Ivory Gate of Dreams because of the last guy saying it was "roughly based on Homer's The Odyssey". As great as this track is, you must look at this album as a whole. The song No Exit only scratches the surface of what this CD represents, and as each song plays, you become entangled in the intricate story line that makes it all the way through the last few minutes of the 24 minutes epic, The Ivory Gate of Dreams. With the lyrics set aside, the music on this CD is awesome. I have all of the earlier CD's but they don't come close to the speed and ferociousness of this. Something horrible happened to the band after this CD, and i wish all of their CD's were just like this even though I love Awaken the Guardian and The Spectre Within. This is my favorite album no matter what genre I"m talking about and it has been for over a year now. If you like metal, whether it's Speed, Progressive, Thrash, please go get this, because there aren't enough Fates Warning fans out there. They should be nearly as highly regarded as Iron Maiden or at least Metallica. Fates Warning are far superior to Metallica in every aspect of what a band is and every music person should know why.

HEAVY METAL AT IT'S FINEST.......2006-10-11
Queensryche? mindcrime? What we have here is something far superior to the over rated "operation mindcrime", I meen the warning was good. The self titled ep was quality but queensryche started to go BLEHHH with mindcrime. THis is fates warning and this disc contains some of the most excellent metal music ever recorded. THis is the bands last "METAL" album and it is no doubt their heaviest. Silent cries is the most kickarse heaviest metal ballad ever....a ballad is heavy?...just listen to that riff in the chorusd it demands your attention, it's simple as hell but its so AWSOME!!!! That is all I need to say about this. Buy this now if you like metal or anything else before this buy this band(every album before this is excellent GRADE A HIGH QUALITY)BUY THIS NOW!!!! It was so good it bought a tear to my eye.
The Roots of Progressive Rock were never stronger...........2006-07-29
What can i say about an album that is close to brillant. These guys go back a few years and i still listen to this album like it was released yesterday. If you like progresive rock then this is an album you want to check out. The solid composition of technical sound blended with lryics that describe and feel thoughts of genuis musical writing, push you through an oddessy of rock and ballad...As i said, these guys are old and this is one of the bands that paved the way to progessive rock. I recomend this to the young and upcomig progressive fans as well. If you like Dream Theater or any other Fates Warning album...give this one a listen, you won't be dissapointed.

"Blondie is a group," the late '70s ads for this most successful of American new wave bands once proclaimed. Unfortunately, the long-anticipated reunion album--featuring original members Deborah Harry, Chris Stein, Jimmy Destri, and Clem Burke--sounds more like disjointed stabs at various styles than it does the work of a cohesive musical unit. "Screaming Skin" has that same cheesy Farfisa organ Blondie used for their hit cover of "The Tide Is High," but you keep waiting for the hook-laden pop melody. Ditto on "Forgive and Forget," which features that old disco beat but without the magic of "Heart of Glass." Elsewhere, they experiment with rap (the title track, featuring guest star Coolio), lounge jazz ("Boom Boom in the Zoom Zoom Room"), and even country ("The Dream's Lost on Me"). But only "Maria" (a garage-pop gem complete with an "I Think We're Alone Now" riff) and a groovy cover of the Shangri-Las' "Out in the Streets" would've felt at home on Parallel Lines, this group's masterpiece. Drummer Burke proves to be the real "star" here, conquering each of the styles and giving the closing track, "Dig Up the Conjo," its psychedelic Beatlesque "Tomorrow Never Knows" feel. --Bill Holdship

Not their worst, but not their greatest.......2007-02-24
Eight years ago today was the day Blondie's reunion album was released, and though it was great to see Blondie back together, No Exit just fell short on many levels. 2004's The Curse of Blondie(see my review also on Amazon)is a much better album and should have been their comeback. No Exit won't exactly take you back to the hooks that made Blondie famous. Harry's lyrics are wonderful in "Double Take," but the deadpan melody literally kills the song. Fans were also not terribly waiting for jazz standards("Boom Boom in the Zoom Zoom Room") or revamped demo tracks("Out in the Streets"), but the worst cut is the title song that includes a rap verse by Coolio. Both the band and Coolio could have thought of something more productive to sing about. The music isn't catchy either. All is not lost with songs like "Night Wind Sent," and Harry's own transformation in "Forgive and Forget, plus who would dare argue Blondie's potential to shake the pop world again when you hear "Maria." As the album's best track, "Maria" is a wonderful reminder of how Blondie, and Debbie, can still create an infectious pop song that leaves a template on the mind.
A welcome return to form for an undderated band........2006-09-28
Blondie's self titled debut came out in 1976, followed in 1977 by Plastic Letters. But it wasn't until 1978's Parallel Lines that the band exploded in terms of commercial and critical acclaim. They would release one more equally great album in the form of 1979's Eat to the Beat. But by 1980's good but flawed Autoamerican, it seemed like the band was striking out in a bit too many directions and they weren't quite the seasoned group at that point to really pull it off. The less said about their final 1982 album The Hunter, the better.
After 17 long years, Blondie surprised everyone by coming out with No Exit in 1999. Some accused them of jumping on the whole reunion craze of the mid to late 90's, but it's really just a case that the band got back together and found out that they still had a lot to say musically and enjoyed playing with each other.
No Exit shares a lot of similarities to AutoAmerican, but it succeeds in all of the areas where Autoamerican faltered.
The album sees the group striking out in everything from their trademark pop-rock to rap (with a guest appearance by Coolio) to swing, to country and pretty much everything in between.
Most of the time the album works. Out of the 14 tracks, there are only about 4 that I would call fillerish, but the remaining 10 tracks are strong, strong stuff.
Anybody who is a long time fan and gave up on them with 1982's The Hunter, would do wise to check this album out as it was kind of ignored by the general public (at least here in the states) when it came out.
While not as front to back strong as their next album (2003's Curse of Blondie), this still represents a return to form for the inimitable Deborah Harry and the boys.
Greatness shines all trough.......2006-06-21
This is a great CD. Woooa, what a comeback from Blondie. To make it short, she`s back in business again. It`s like a joyride into a time machine. Much of here personality and style is not lost over the years. Track 1 Screaming Skin has an up tempo "ska rythm" which swings your soul in the right direction to make it a happy listen altrough. The sound picture are very 70 ths, and it works quite good nowadays too. Track 2 Forgive and Forget is theme wise an another cup of tea. It`s more into the sound of the 80 ths, with it`s more widespread and very open sound picture. It`s an enjoyable listen, with Blondie`s voice cold and clear that makes chills deep into youre soul. Not easy to forget,this one.
Track 3 Maria is the really hit song on this CD. It`s very melodious . This is the one that every note and tone fits perfect in every department, so to speak. It`s a real kickstarter, and the big hit song that should have been back in 1998/1999. Track 4 No Exit, is the title track, and has a classical music theme in the opening, which later on is mixed into rock&roll. This is the weird one on the CD, where many different musical styles is brought together as a whole. Track 5 Double Take, has a talking vocal. It`s a minor letdown, and not really up there whit the rest of the tracks. Debbie`s voice is the best thing. cold,clear, and chilling as always. Track 6 Nothing is real but the girl, is an up tempo pop song, which is well done in every department all trough. Track 7 Boom Boom in the Zoom Zoom room, is the jazzy one with it`s sauntering rhythm. Some reggae and ska rhythm helps too. Track 8 Night wind sent, is the laidback one with an open sound picture, and Blondies voice as good as ever. A touch of intellectual lullaby atmosphere on this one. Track 9 Under the gun, is classical Blondie stuff. Track 10 Out in the streets, hit`s the right buttons, to make it very credible for, let`s called it an urban street song. Track 11 Happy Dog is the blues/rock song, whit the right touches of the right ingredients for a happy meal of rock and roll put together. Track 12 The Dream lost on me, is the one that has the touch of irish folk song included. This one knows it roots, in other words "the real thing". Track 13 Divine, is back in the reggae style of music. Classical Blondie. Track 14 Dig up the conjo , has a weird synth sound. The weakest track on the CD, with it`s African voodoo hoodoo sound picture. As an whole Blondie:No Exit is the comeback CD that shows that here greatness shines all trough, even up to "todays" standard of modern rock/pop music.
The Album.......2006-05-18
This is the album that made me another BLONDIE fan, well, Deborah Harry fan that is. I've been listening every day, many times a day, hundreds of times, and yet no boredom whatsoever. Maybe because of the energy this album emanates, or the voice of the lady, I just don't know why. There is no such albums in my CD collection I should add. The sound is just right. Debbie's voice is just right, so right. Now it's my treasure. This was my first BLONDIE experience. Then I got some of their albums, including the 50 some songs included THE PLATINUM COLLECTION, and I've found their music is far better than I thought. Very talented, intelligent, and charming group of people. Especially, the amazing Lady.
No Exit.......2005-12-06
No Exit~ Blondie is a nice straightforward new vawe pop album and as usual they are not affraid to mix styles and have rap, new wave, rock and pop fused on this album. The lyrics are ok and serve their purpose. However, the book-let is travesty. The photo is on the cover just looks bad and as if they invited some friends to take the pictures instead of a photographer. I would have been happy if this was the low, but alas the rest of the book-let is even worst with no lyrics, font that is hard to read and the photos inside the book-let are way to avant-gard for my taste. I love Harry's vocals and the muisicianship of the band is quite good indeed.

On Vocalise, the fifth installment in his Adiemus series, composer Karl Jenkins presents his first discernable lyrics (an invocation sung in English on "The Protector") and his first arrangements, quite eclectic, of classical repertoire (imagine a movement of Beethoven's 7th symphony recast as a tango). We also experience brief encounters with jazz guitar (from Martin Taylor), improvisational saxophone (Nigel Hitchcock), Middle East incantations, even backwater harmonica. It is indeed a jumble, and at times Vocalise (i.e., "wordless song") evokes impressions of intermingled jigsaw puzzles where an abundance of pieces never quite coalesce into a whole. Jenkins' most distinctive audio element, his exuberant Munchkins-from-Africa choir singing in a nonliteral phonetic language, is again on display and is best appreciated in small doses (vocalist Miriam Stockley, a centerpiece of early Adiemus works, does not take part). Jenkins' most affecting pieces on this CD are among its quietest: the slow-building "Bendigedig" ("blessed" in Welsh, Jenkins' native tongue) and the title track, a reverent reworking of a Rachmaninov composition of the same name. Even with all its stylistic side trips, at 68 minutes fans should be able to cherry-pick enough highlights (such as the breezy frolic of "Schubert's Dance") to find contentment with this disc. --Terry Wood

Making Arrangements.......2006-11-10
I would have probably enjoyed this CD more if Sarah Brightman hadn't used the same formula several years ago. There's nothing wrong with making clever arrangements of classical themes, but that's all you'll find in this collection -- none of the exciting, original melodies for which Karl Jenkins is best known.
Don't get me wrong; I own and love Sarah Brightman's versions of these same themes. I was just hoping for something new.
I miss Miriam. .......2006-08-10
I have to say it, while this is a nice cd it is missing something vital. The songs are becoming derivative and though the vocalists are lovely but without Miriam's voice it lacks that extra magic that made Adiemus so great.
I began to get worried when they brought in the Adiemus Singers, because it greately affected their sound, and then the 1999 version of Adiemus was placed on the Essential collection rather than the vastly superior original, and now no Miriam at all.
I think I'll stick to Karl's orchestral works from now on because he really is an amazing composer, and maybe I'll learn to like this CD as much as their previous stuff? It's not bad by any means, but it isn't exactly what I love about the earlier recordings either.
I tried to like it, honest........2005-08-21
I absolutely adore Adiemus's first and second albums, really like the third, and the fourth is all right. So I was really looking forward to this one. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed. I thought perhaps I would warm to it in time but so far that hasn't happened. (I purchased it when it first came out--advance order. That's how much I was looking forward to it.)
The only song I truly like on the album is "Bendigedig," which sounds like it could have come from "Songs Of Sanctuary" or "Cantata Mundi" with its singing and soaring orchestral sound. Oddly, I also kind of like "Boogie Woogie Llanoogie" (nobody hurt me), but it's definitely not what one would expect from Adiemus. The two pieces for "Schwanda" are cute but strangely, do not feature bagpipes--and are very short. The rest of the music is, unfortunately, forgettable. I do NOT like the coherent lyrics because a big part of the enjoyment of Adiemus is being able to make up your own meaning for the songs--and a lot of the music on this album seemed to have an oddly Christian or religious-sounding bent. When I put this CD in, rather than listening through all or almost all of the songs like I do for Adiemus 1, 2, and 3, I just listen to one track, and that's it.
It's nice how Adiemus changes their style every so often to try to keep things fresh--but would a return to the old style hurt so much by now? I truly miss the great orchestral sound and lyricism of albums 1 and 2 and, to a slightly lesser extent, 3. Those three albums are what keep me coming back for more, even though albums 4 and 5 have rather been letdowns. Yes, Adiemus without Miriam Stockley is sad, but I think they could do just as well without her...if they went back to their old musical style at least once more! "Bendigedig" proves that. If only more of the songs on this album did.
Here's hoping that Adiemus 6, whenever and whatever it should be, is better...

...but on the whole, more hits than misses. I especially like The Protector (the first Adiemus track with recognizable words). Another good track is Dona Nobis Pacem, Pt. 2. On the miss side is the Boogie Woogie Llanoogie. Another reivewer hit it spot in comparing it to Scooby Doo music. Also Dona Nobis Pacem, Pt. 1 didn't do much for me. While the album doesn't rise to the standard of Adiemus 1, it is a solid addition to the Adiemus library.

As vocalist for the lead track as well as Aria and several other tracks throughout this album, I am dissapointed that I did not get the recognition I was promised by Jenkins. However, I think the album is beautiful and I am pleased that I was involved.

I will confess from the outset that I do not much care for the music of Franz Liszt. Second only to Richard Wagner, to me Liszt was the epitome of Romantic excess and glitz. But, the same things that make his music unappealing to me also make his life engrossing. The excess, the yearning for fame, the glitz, and the "musician as persona."
Yes, this was Franz Liszt and NAXOS has done a (typical for them) outstanding job in letting us get to know this composer. In the span of 2+ hours, we are treated to a fascinating and well-told story (or maybe a musical, as about 1/4 of this recording consists of musical excerpts). From Liszt's 'child prodigy' status, to his love for himself, his art, and his women, to his retirement to a Monestary (!?), we see it all: the good, the bad, and the ugly. An original "Behind The Music," if you will!
For all that, I have two complaints. First, while it may not bother some listeners, the actors who play the part of various characters all speak with British accents; no attempt is given to emulate the accent of the actual character (be it Hungarian, French, etc.) In audiobooks, I prefer the characters' dialogue to be spoken in their accent of origin (Huck Finn in a Mississippi accent, Ivan Karimozov in a Russian, etc.) Thus, if felt (at least to me) a little forced to hear Franz Liszt's letters read in a British, rather than a Hungarian, accent.
Secondly, this biography of Liszt breaks with most others in its assertion that Liszt's self-centeredness and philandering has been either overexaggerated (in the case of the former) or fabricated (in the case of the latter). This is not a problem in itself, but such claims demand demonstration. Not only was none forthcoming, but the story only served to REconfirm these traits. How many of the women in Liszt's life were married at the time? Did not Liszt pawn his first two children off on a wetnurse so he could travel about Europe? And did anyone REALLY buy Liszt's protestations that being a musical genius was a burden that he really did NOT want? (He Didth protest too much, methinks!)
Well, whatever your conclusion on these issues (I can only tell you mine), this two CD set is worth hearing. The story is well-told (if at times uncritical) and the music is well selected.

A convincing look into what makes a genius click.......2001-08-14
Naxos is doing a wonderful job with its emerging "Life and Works" series. Quite some time ago, we had a Life/Works of Mozart, more recently one of Chopin and now two more, Liszt and Beethoven. Both are even better packaged than are the earlier sets, with a thick booklet that offers us essays on the historical background, the position of the composer in his time, a look at the major works, a listening plan, recommended readings, personalities, a calendar of the artist's life, a glossary, a discography--and finally something I thought I would never see, the text of the recording's narration. This booklet is worth the price of the set alone.
By the way, the Liszt set starts off with the sound of artillery, the Beethoven with the sound of a cork popping. A good way to get your attention and/or to convince you that you have purchased the wrong recording.
Written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann, the production enlists some excellent actors to play the people in the composer's life. In the "Franz Liszt" set (8.558005-06), we have Neville Jason as the voice of Lizst, who is joined by David Timson, Raphael Clarkson, Elaine Claxton, and Karen Archer as the voices of Lizst's friends, critics, and especially loves. The musical selections are drawn from the bottomless well of Naxos recordings.
As I commented with regard to the Chopin set, the music is well chosen but some of it simply lasts too long for those who are eager to get on to the facts of the composer's life. On the other hand, this IS called the Life and Works series, and perhaps a balance is to be maintained between the two aspects.
Liszt's idiosyncrasies make a good comparison with those of Chopin, the former doing everything he could to call attention to himself, the latter withdrawn--but both acting like bloody fools in so many ways. Perhaps that is the price of genius. The tale of Liszt and his Countess Marie is both funny and painful, especially in the way they neglected their children (one of whom was Cosima, the future wife of Wagner).
You will note that this set is on 2 CDs where the others are on four. I draw no conclusions from that other than the obvious. A wonderful buy, all things considered.
