If Nevermind's sound is familiar now, it's only because thousands of rock records that followed it were trying very hard to cop its style. It tears out of the speakers like a cannonball, from the punk-turbo-charged riff of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" onward, magnifying and distilling the wounded rage of 15 years of the rock underground into a single impassioned roar. Few albums have occupied the cultural consciousness like this one; of its 12 songs, roughly 10 are now standards. The record's historical weight can make it hard to hear now with fresh ears, but the monumental urgency of Kurt Cobain's screams is still shocking. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars THE RESURRECTION OF ROCK !.......2007-07-24

Without a doubt, Nirvana's Nevermind (1991) is a landmark in rock music. In the 1980's, rock music tailored it's sound and image to cash in on the abundant Amercan Yuppie dollar, and in the process became corporate, sanitized, and devoid of authentic rebellion, defiance, or unconventional passion. Sure, the metal of the eighties was fun, but it didn't really speak to the misplaced, the disaffected, or the anguished. Nevermind was a cinder block that crashed through the plate glass window of Corporate Rock Music, Inc. It literally changed the face of popular music and culture in the 1990s. The album features hard rocking pop melodies with dark lyrics, and plenty of attitude. In fact, the attitude is the main attraction here. It's pure, honest, doesn't compromise, or have time to be reasoned with. Their anthem Smells Like Teen Spirit opens the album with wildly energetic hard rock and lyrics expressing the alienation and discontent of youth in the new world order. Lithium is another hard rocker with a strong melody and great lyrics, "I love you, I hate you, I'm not gonna crack!". It's one of the better songs on the album. In Bloom and Come As You Are rock steady as the catchy melodies carry most of the weight. Breed and Territorial Pissings are fast and frantic. Kurt Cobain's vocals and guitar are legendary, but bassist Krist Novoselic is also very good, and drummer Dave Grohl is fantastic as he pounds out the rhythm in a powerful and manic declaration of expression. Nirvana goes acoustic on the creepy Polly, where Cobain plays the role of a rapist, and the resigned and sorrowful Something In The Way, which also features an eerie cello playing in the background. Drain You and Stay Away are rock n' roll blizzards with layers of multi-tracked guitar crunch. On A Plain is a melodic proclamation of individual defiance that has a creative guitar sound. Nevermind is a high energy tempest of alienation, indifference, and in-your-face defiance that sounds as pure, exuberant, and authentic as any rock music album ever recorded. It's Nirvana's best by far, and it's one of the most important and influential albums ever released in popular music. Don't believe me? Ask Night Ranger, Def Leppard, Ratt, Poison, Quiet Riot, or Motley Crue. If you can find them.

5 out of 5 stars One star raters are the coolest...........2007-07-18

Hi, I've never gotten tired of any song on this album. It's loud, obnoxious, funny, tuneful, and entertaining. Everyone on here over analyzes this album because they feel that they have to "set the masses straight." Listen, if you're new to Nirvana... this is their breakthrough album. You'll see that a ton of people tend to dog this album because they're enangered by the fact that most people don't like whatever kind of leather, or spiked hair enducing music that THEY listen to. The fact is that this is the first aggressively hard pop record ever made with any ammount of success to it's name. The fact that every one who has followed this albumn and has been blasted on the radio sucks, is not in fact the bands fault... it's the fault of record companies trying to milk the sound that originated from them by selling [...] music to consumers. This album is beyond good... it's not "depressing" as people might have you believe. The depression from that era came from every other band who came out AFTER NIRVANA---namely Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden who were all serious and mentally unstable. Though Kurt was unstable, he had the good sense of making fun of it all with jokes and puns rather than crying about it. So now that I've set you straight, I hope that you'll give this album the chance it deserves instead of listening to the one star raters who purposely give this album no credit to piss people off and to be considered cool because they are different than the majority.

4 out of 5 stars A Good album but not great!.......2007-06-29

This is by far one of the most overated albums of all time in my opinion. I love Nirvana, but to say this is there best album as others on this site and google sites say is insane. This is decent Nirvana but if you want to listen to there best album check out In Utero!!

5 out of 5 stars defined an experience and sound for a decade.......2007-06-25

cobain was on track to be the lennon/mccartney, jagger/richards, westerberg, jones/strummer of his generation. sadly his suicide robbed the world of the great music he undoubtedly would have continued to make.

tough to coin an accolade for this work that has not been used before. in one album, cobain summed up the experience of a generation and defined the decade's dominant rock sound -- whether he wanted to or not. what amazes most, in listening to this and its follow-up 10 years later, is the impeccable songwriting. cobain seemingly was incapable of writing a song that was not infectious, or of writing lyrics that were not captivating.

5 out of 5 stars Nevermind: Classic Rock Album.......2007-06-18

Nevermind was recently chosen by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 200 Definitive Rock albums of history. It certainly deserves this status. I was a teenager when this album was released and it certainly changed my life. The power, passion, angst, and emotion of the songs is what made it work for me and millions of other young people worldwide. As a teacher today I continue to see younger people influenced by this album and band. Forget the fact that it has sold 24 million copies worldwide and was chosen by the Library of Congress to be preserved for all time, this is an album that has passion and energy and will be a classic for a long time to come. From the classics such as Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, Lithium and In Bloom...to other lesser known songs such as Drain You, On A Plain,. and Polly....this is an album that has to be in everyone's rock collection. For those who say this album is overated......compared to what? Music is very subjective. Nirvana were not Gods and they certainly were not perfect, but they helped to change the music industry and provide music that continues to inspire and influence people today.

The last Nirvana collection recorded before the untimely death of Kurt Cobain, Unplugged caught many by surprise with its stripped down, neo-acoustic offerings with a bridled fury. When Cobain sings, "I swear I don't have a gun, I don't have a gun" with clenched teeth (instead of an open howl) and when the haunting strains of "About a Girl"--from their earliest LP--chills even with quieted guitars, you discover a new appreciation for the nuances of one of the greatest bands of recent times. Highlights include covers of three Meat Puppets tracks (featuring special guests Curt and Kris Kirkwood of that influential "college rock" band), the weepy cello on the Vaselines' "Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam," and their cover of David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World." --Lorry Fleming

5 out of 5 stars The most classic Nirvana show.......2007-07-18

This CD is about the first MTV Unplugged, that was really unplugged, really acoustic, it was live, you can see the history in rock music changes with this show, the actual MTV unplugged are comercial and taped. If you like rock and Nirvana you must have this album

5 out of 5 stars Nirvana's Defining Moment.......2007-06-18

This is the album that made me a Nirvana fan for life. I had listened to the radio hits of Nevermind...and bought In Utero for Heart Shaped Box and All Apologies, but this is the album that really made me realize the greatness of this band. With the removal of the loud guitars and distortion, you can hear the greatness in Nirvana's songs and the passion in Cobain's voice. Yes, the songs are not always played perfectly and sometimes Cobain is off pitch, but that is what makes this performance so real and genuine. Let's not forget this was not a studio performance but a concert setting. On top of that, unlike most other bands on MTV Unplugged, Nirvana did every song with just one take. About A Girl is a beautiful Beatleesque pop song, Pennyroyal Tea proves to be a beautiful song minus the loud raging guitars, and All Apoligies is haunting and brilliant (I must say I like the In Utero version better however.) What also makes this album great is the covers from David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World" to the incredable Leadbelly cover of "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" The end of this song is one of the best performances I have ever heard by an artist. The passion and angst is there...and it's not fake for the TV cameras but truely Cobain's dark inner pain. This is what makes this album great. The passion and thought put in to each and every song by Kurt Cobain. This is not to take away from the rest of the band who do a great job keeping each and every song going, including to addition of cello and accordian to some of the songs.

4 out of 5 stars Nirvana-MTV Unplugged in New York (an unbiased review).......2007-06-17

First, let me start off by saying that this is an unbiased review. I'm not a fan of the band nor do I dislike the band. I'm a fan of all types of music. I also won't be comparing this album to any other albums from the band. This review will be strictly on this particular album. Now onto the review.

Here's a rundown of the songs (as well as my rating for each song):

About a Girl-4.5/5
Come As You Are-4.5/5
Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam-3/5
The Man Who Sold the World-3.5/5
Pennyroyal Tea-2.5/5
Dumb-4/5
Polly-4/5
On a Plain-3.5/5
Something in the Way-4/5
Plateau-3/5
Oh Me-3.5/5
Land of Fire-3/5
All Apologies-4.5/5
Where Did You Sleep Last Night-4/5

Picture this: Kurt Kobain, 3 acoustic guitars, a set of drums, and a cello. What could me more perfect than that? This album is a set of 14 songs from Nirvana's second album all played acoustically. The only thing better than a greatest hits album is an album with live, acoustic music from the band. Here's where the band hit (and missed) with this album.

So what's to like about this album? First, aside from a few pitchy spots here and there, Kobain's vocals are top notch and send chills down my spine. I personally prefer his recorded vocals to his live vocals but I'm sure a lot of people out there love the rawness of his voice when he sings live. The way he sings shows a ton of emotion as though each word that comes out of his mouth means the world to him yet he remains mellow with an "I don't care about anything" type of attitude.

Second, although the grungy sound is gone due to the lack of electric guitars, the hardness is still there in my eyes. With 3 guitars going at the same time, the band is able to achieve a great mixture of sounds while still maintaining the "you can feel it in your stomach", loud, hard, beats. "Come As You Are" doesn't lose its great intro or guitar solo. Kurt just plugs in his acoustic guitar and the sound is just like the original. Another stand out song in terms of guitar work is "The Man Who Sold the World". It's great to hear a band that can not only play their songs acoustically but can also make them sound so complex, giving a whole new sound to their songs. Equally impressive is drummer Dave Grohl's background vocals.

Third, as mentioned above, the band uses a cellist alongside their guitars and drums. Although it's sometimes hard to miss, you can certainly hear it in "All Apologies". This helps to create a more bluesy sound with some of the songs.

Fourth, those who don't know much about Nirvana's music (myself included) will be thrilled to see that "About a Girl", "Come As You Are", and "All Apologies" are on this album. You also may recognize "Dumb" and "Polly". All of these songs are done superbly. And you will be pleasantly surprised that there are a lot of great songs on this album that you haven't heard of. From the haunting "Something in the Way" and "Oh Me" to the incredibly sad "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" (my new current favorite Nirvana song) to the blast-worthy "Plateau", you'll find a lot of great new material on this album.

And what's not to like? Not much. As mentioned above, there are some pitchy spots throughout the album but that's expected. Some of the songs are a bit on the short side which isn't a huge turn off but just something I observed. In terms of songs I didn't like, "Pennyroyal Tea" isn't all that great and "Lake of Fire" and "Plateau" are both too country-sounding for my taste.

My rating: 4/5 stars. I probably would've given 4.5 stars if I could. The reason for taking 1 star off is that I find it hard to play every song on this album. I tend to skip over maybe 4 or 5 of them. Other than that, this album is perfect and Nirvana fans as well as fans of great music in general will equally be impressed with how this live album turned out. Be sure to pick it up!

5 out of 5 stars Necessary for any music collection.......2007-05-31

It doesn't matter whether you're into grunge, or even if you like Nirvana that much, this album is a winner in every sense. The tracks from previous studio albums are cast in a new light, but the timing is not too different that you can't belt out your best Kurt Cobain with all those intonations you know so well. Also, the covers are masterfully done; it's plain to see that the band has a lot of respect for the tracks and their original artists.
If you're getting into more Unpluggeds, check out Neil Young and Eric Clapton. The Korn Unplugged that just came out recently might be worth it too if you have a basic enjoyment of their music.

5 out of 5 stars Best Nirvana album EVER.......2007-05-22

Yes this is better than Nevermind, far and away. If you (as my dad) think Nirvana is just pure noise, listen to this and your mind should be changed. Nirvana's better in an acoustic setting than plugged in - they're good plugged in too, but I prefer Cobain the acoustic guitarist to Cobain the electric one - listen to his work on songs like Something in the Way or Lake of Fire.
Other than the fact that every song is top quality but Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam (which is terrible) is the variety of song selection. They mostly skip over their hits - Pennyroyal Tea, About a Girl, Come As You Are and All Apologies make appearances, but so do three near-obscurities from Nevermind. Now, Something in the Way and Polly were great songs in the first place, but I never liked the studio take of On a Plain - I saw it as one of the several generic speedy punk-grunge rockers that took up space on the album's second side (others include Lounge Act, Stay Away and Territorial Pissings). But it's one of my favorites in this setting. The melody comes into full view, there's an added backup vocal from Dave Grohl similar to the one on Heart Shaped Box, and it's set to a nice toe-tapping rhythm. Very cool. And this version of Pennyroyal Tea is also better than the familiar hit one (which is hard to beat), getting even MORE raw emotion from the chorus. Not to mention their high-profile cover of David Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World, which actually isn't unplugged but who cares?
Stick around for the last five songs, too. Three are covers of Meat Puppets (who, if you don't know them, are a fairly high-profile college-rock band - high profile for a college-rock band, that is). Lake of Fire has the aforementioned good acoustic picking and is probably my favorite song about hell ever written (sure beats similar songs by Slayer or Slipknot!), Plateau has a good back-porch vibe, and Oh Me, strong vocals.
And if this was just the last two songs, I'd still give it five stars. I love the studio take on All Apologies as much as the proverbial next guy (assuming he's a Nirvana fan, of course), but this one's even better. The perfect song for an all acoustic setting. And Where Did You Sleep Last Night (originally a Leadbelly song called In the Pines) is, I think, my favorite Nirvana song ever. Especially the ending. The group had gotten into a killer quiet, swaying mood for awhile, and then all the sudden Kurt loses all control and starts screaming, "MY GIRL, MY GIRL, DON'T YOU LIE TO ME, TELL ME WHERE DID YOU SLEEP LAST NIGHT". Whoa... whoa, whoa, and whoa.
You can just see Nirvana going in an all-acoustic direction had Kurt not killed himself (of course, he might not have killed himself had he not been FORCED into stardom by frickin' MTV) when you listen to this.

Overwhelmed by sudden success, Nirvana promised to take a harsher, more abrasive route on their second major-label release. Enlisting Chicago-based noise maven Steve Albini (of Big Black fame), Kurt Cobain and company succeeded in producing a record that was violent, disillusioned, and deeply moving. Every song reads like a commentary on the cost of fame ("Serve the Servants") and the unhealthy relationship between performer and fan ("Milk It"). Of course, they might all simply be about Courtney Love. Gossip aside, there is no denying the sheer power of Cobain's songwriting, his singing, and the band's amazing, visceral power. Cobain even manages a John Lennon-like mantra at the end of the heart-wrenching "All Apologies." "All in all is all we are," he intones repeatedly, only for Cobain that's no consolation. --Percy Keegan

5 out of 5 stars In Utero: Challenging, Yet Brave Album.......2007-06-18

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times". This quote from Charles Dickens and A Tale of Two Cities seems to describe the confusion and contradiction to Nirvana's In Utero. This was their third studio album and second after the breakthough of Nevermind. In Utero ranges from radio rock hits such as Heart Shaped Box, All Apologies, and Rape Me, to songs that purposely challenged and even attempted to scare away an audience such as Milk IT, Tourette's, and Scentless Apprentice. The album also contains songs that might point to where Nirvana was heading in the future, such as the cello backed Dumb and the Folk/rock opening of Pennyroyal Tea. This is not the album for those who just liked the polished songs of Nevermind, but for those who wish to see the full range of Nirvana. This is Nirvana in transition, stuck between rebelling against their quick rise to success, yet still sticking with the famous pop/rock formula which made them famous, and experimenting at the same time. The result was a number one album that has gone on to sell over 5 million copies and is considered Nirvana's finest work by many fans. My only regret with this album is the production work. I am glad that Heart Shaped Box, All Apoligies, and Pennyroyal Tea were remixed by Scott Litt. Originally the band was considering Andy Wallce....I wonder what this album would have sounded like had he been chosen. Overall, this album deserves a 5 for the classic songs and Cobain's willingness to stay close to his musical beliefs. Once again, Cobain's intense passion is shown in all of the music which was always his defining point.

5 out of 5 stars noise never sounded so good.......2007-05-23

i love this record...i love all of kurt cobains records. nirvana although shortlived started a grunge revolution. the pain in kurt's voice is so evident. the standout tracks on this album are heart shaped box, rape me, frances farmer, dumb, pennyroyal tea and my personal favorite all apologies. pick up this, nevermind and incesticide to start with and if you like those grab bleach and unplugged.

1 out of 5 stars [Probably] the worst album I've ever heard.......2007-05-07

Nirvana's In Utero album, circa 1993, is probably THE WORST album I've ever heard. Screaming, raspy vocals and reckless guitar playing are what make this album. Nirvana were never popular because of the sound of their music; oh no, far from it. They just happened to be at the right place in the right time when 1991's Nevermind was released. Pretty much every song on this album is bad, and the worst are "Scentless Apprentice," "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter," and "Tourette's," which is filled to the brim with raspy screaming. People say Cobain was a genius, but people only liked him because grunge was big in the 90s. If you want something good, try Led Zeppelin IV (aka ZOSO), Electric Ladyland by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Appetite for Destruction by Guns 'n' Roses. I'm warning you, save yourself by NOT buying this trash.

5 out of 5 stars Nirvana's BEST: 1993's In Utero.......2007-04-13

Kurt's voice was edgy and raw, yet still had a Americanized mainstream-like sound. I wish he was still around as I would have like to see where he would have taken his direction of upcoming releases.
I first heard this about 1995, one year after Kurt Cobain's death.
In Utero(1993) is one of the first Cds I ever bought, back in junior high school. I had "Nevermind" on cassette. To me, Nevermind- a sleeker, more polished sounding release.
"Heart Shaped Box" - is the video that inspired me to buy this album. It just sounded so cool, w/ bright colors & death like themes (hospitals, man on a cross, black waters). "HSB" remains my favorite song by Nirvana.
From start to finish opening w/ "Serve the Servants" and ending w/ the closer "All Apologies"- this is just a more raw and mature and visual w/ lyrics of "umblical noose" - "meat-eating orchids" - "magnet tar pit" - "rape" among others, just more descriptive and real.
This also brings Nirvana a return to their roots & not conforming to what the media, record company & fans wanted to hear after "Nevermind."
This was no mainstream grunge-accessible pop like everyone wanted, but to me it BLOWS "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and the rest of their 1991 Hit, AWAY!

1 out of 5 stars Swansong of the most overrated band ever........2007-04-12

Just like their previous effort "Nevermind," "In Utero" is more abyssmal simplistic angsty radio-rock for the "misunderstood" teens who think they have the worst lives ever because their parents made them clean their rooms and do their homework against their will.

Kurt Cobain wasn't a genius by any means, his song-writing was terrible along with his "guitar playing." Back when Kurt was still alive, Nirvana was actually struggling with record sales but after Kurt blew his own head off, that's when record sales skyrocketed and they got the legendary status they don't deserve by any means. The only talented member of Nirvana was Dave Grohl, and his recent work with Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) and Killing Joke is way better than Nerdvana.

The death of Chuck Schuldiner (Death) was a real tragedy in the guitar world, not the death of Kurt Cobain. Chuck was 10000000000000000000x better than Kurt at both playing guitar and writing songs. Just listen to Death's "The Philosopher" (from "Individual Thought Patterns") and "Crystal Mountain" (from "Symbolic"), and you'll be de-converveted from this joke of a band.

If you're not ready for Death, check out the only worthy grunge band Alice in Chains (particularly "Dirt" and "Jar of Flies"), RIP Layne Staley.

Lastly, Nirvana didn't save rock, it just made it worse. Thanks to them, we have awful bands like Korn, the Deftones, Cold, Staind, and other nu-metal/a$$rock bands.

Essentially a greatest-hits collection with one previously unreleased song, "You Know You're Right," and producer Scott Litt's 1994 remix of "Pennyroyal Tea," Nirvana the album is nevertheless a welcome addition to the band's canon. Crisp, elegant liner notes by Rolling Stone writer David Fricke put us squarely in Kurt Cobain's mindset as he entered a Seattle studio in January 1994--a full two days later than expected--to record what would be his final session with Nirvana. The resulting "You Know You're Right" locates Cobain at the apogee of his disenfranchisement with tongue nevertheless planted firmly in cheek. Bawdy, raucous, and venomous, "You Know You're Right" could have been lifted from Nevermind. A mix of tracks from that album ("Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Come as You Are," "Lithium," and "In Bloom") sits opposite stuff from early EPs and the Bleach disc ("About a Girl," "Been a Son," and "Sliver"), plus two from the MTV Unplugged sessions and several more from In Utero. Not the Nirvana treasure chest we hoped for, but solid nonetheless. --Kim Hughes

3 out of 5 stars what a disgrace.......2007-07-18

k. cobain would be spinning in his grave if he knew this had been released (and if he had a grave he was cremated). there is no way in hell that nirvanas greatness can be sumed up in 14 songs. the ONLY reason this was released was for the very first song "you know youre right" which was the last track that cobain laid down in the studio with nirvana. the track was supposed to be on the "with the lights out" compilation but courtney "yoko" love got in the way and put her two cents in which nobody wanted and started a fu c king mess saying that the song was too important to just be released on a compilation of demos and b-sides so they essentially made up a greatest hits album for the sole purpose of releasing that one song. cash cow anyone? kurt should have never hooked up with that gold-digging heffer.

4 out of 5 stars All The Hits.......2007-06-19

Not a perfect album with song choices, but a good collection of most of Nirvana's hits. A few problems I have with this album: 1. Their first single Love Buzz is not included here. 2. The Unplugged version of All Apoligies is used instead of the In Utero version which is the one which reached number one of Billboard's Modern Rock charts. While not perfect, this album does do the job of collecting most of Nirvana's hits, including You Know Your Right. This may be a great place for new fans to start or for the casual listener who just wants most of the hits. However, I recommend that if you get into Nirvana to also buy their studio albums as well to get a full sense of this band.

1 out of 5 stars i wonder what kurt would've thought about this...........2007-06-08

I can't help but imagine the anger and hatred Kurt himself would've felt about this compilation. The reasons are blatantly obvious.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated.......2007-05-21

More than any kind of CD's, it's "Greatest Hits" collections that get the most crap from fans. It only has one unreleased track! My favorite song isn't on here! This song was a hit and it's missing! The list goes on...I believe that any budding fan of Nirvana can start with "Nevermind," because it's a great album and can make you a fan. However, if you don't own all the albums, "Nirvana" is worth getting. It's got the essentials and the underrated ('The Man Who Sold the World'); It's got the previously unreleased "You Know You're Right." All the songs are 5-star songs (except "Been a Son" which is a little incoherent and, sort of, annoying; and "Pennyroyal Tea" which was remixed to suit Kurt's liking, but still isn't that good). The first track, the last song Nirvana ever recorded, is one of the most haunting and painful songs ever recorded. The pain Kurt Cobain expresses in his voice on this track is rivaled only by songs like "Lifeless Dead" and "Down in a Hole" sung by Layne Staley. The next three tracks are from their little-heard "Bleach" album; "Sliver" and "About a Girl" are real keepers. Then there's the 4 tracks from "Nevermind," which are "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Come As You Are" and "In Bloom" and "Lithium." I know a way they could've made this a TRULY original Greatest Hits album. They shouldn't have put "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on the album. Sure, there would've been a public/fan outcry but it would've been a nice little tribute to the memory of Kurt Cobain since he hated that song. Then there's the songs from "In Utero," all which are great. One of the strangest songs Nirvana ever recorded and one of my favorite Nirvana songs is "Rape Me" and I'm glad that's on here. Then the album closes with two songs from the Unplugged album. "All Apologies" and "The Man Who Sold the World," a David Bowie cover. A lot of fans would get mad at me if I said it's the best song Nirvana ever did, so I'll stick with it's my favorite song on the album. I've never heard Bowie's version, but Nirvana's version is great. It doesn't even sound like a live track! It's parallels a little bit of Kurt's life, as well as being a catchy song with a terrific bassline and guitar hook. Fans will always complain about this album and, unless you're a completist, if you have all the Nirvana albums...This one isn't necessary. However, if you're looking to get into Nirvana this CD is worth checking out.

Nirvana may have been the biggest thing in the music world in the early '90s, but the trio maintained an uncommon devotion to core fans who knew them when they were still sleeping in a van. Fending off the adoration of punk-rock dabblers in the media and their audience while simultaneously welcoming stalwart underground-music supporters, Kurt Cobain did things on his own terms--until it all came crashing down. A decade after Cobain's 1994 suicide and the band's demise, With the Lights Out remains true to the ethos that defined the band and the alt-rock revolution that rose and fell with them.

Eschewing the standard hits-sprinkled-with-rarities mix, this lovingly compiled three-CD, one-DVD collection is made up almost entirely of previously unreleased selections. The handful of previously heard tracks are obscurities along the lines of the group's cover of "Here She Comes Now," recorded for a 1990 indie-rock tribute to the Velvet Underground. But it's not the B-sides and compilation oddities that define this idiosyncratic set; rather, its spirit is captured in the bedroom demos, radio performances, and sloppy amateur video recordings that catch Cobain and cohorts developing from just another punk- and metal-inspired bunch of grunge rockers pounding away in the bass player's mom's living room into a band that defined an era. --Steven Stolder

Album Description

The box set spans Nirvana's entire career, from a recording of Led Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker" at the band's first show in 1987 to solo acoustic performances from singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain in 1994. With The Lights Out features a 60-page color booklet with rare photos and liner notes by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and writer Neil Strauss. The three CDs, arranged largely chronologically contains home and rehearsal demos, including for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (whose lyric "With the lights out" provides the set's title), "Rape Me," "Heart Shaped Box" and a trio penned by legendary bluesman Leadbelly. Heard in the 12 previously unreleased solo acoustic tracks are such gems as "All Apologies," "Lithium" and "Sliver." Six previously unreleased radio performances range from "Anorexorcist" in 1987 to "Dumb" in 1991 (two years before it was on 1993's In Utero). Along with the remaining debuts are a handful of earlier issued, though rare, b-sides and demos as well as the original Butch Vig mix of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Highlighted on the With The Lights Out DVD is a previously unreleased video of nine songs performed in 1988 at bassist Krist Novoselic's mother's house in Aberdeen, Washington; the rare "In Bloom" Sub Pop music video, and 10 never-before-seen live performances. Noteworthy among them are debut renditions of "Pennyroyal Tea", "Smells Like Teen Spirit" both from early 1991. Also premiering is an unlikely performance of Jacques Brel and Rod McKuen's "Seasons In The Sun" shot at a Rio de Janeiro studio.

5 out of 5 stars amazing collection from the greatest band ever.......2007-07-25

This collection of Nirvana's greatest music follows the band from their beginning to end. This is a must own for anyone who likes nirvana.

4 out of 5 stars Rare Nirvana.......2007-06-19

This was the Box Set that Nirvana fans had been waiting for. With it's release they were not disappointed. The Box Set is arranged chronologically, with demos, song outtakes, and studio mixes from Nirvana's career. My personal highlights include the Leadbelly cover Ain't It a Shame, the Nevermind Outakes of Old Age and Verse, Chorus Verse, and the last demo ever recorded by Cobain called Do Re Mi. Some of this makes you realize that some of Cobain's strongest work was never released. Old Age had top 40 potential if it would have been completed. Do Re Mi has a beautiful melody and beatleesque tone. My only regret is that some of the demos did not belong on here due to their roughness. This space might have been better filled perhaps with Nirvana's radio performances or concert performances. The DVD also contained rare Nirvana footage. However, I was disappointed it didn't contain more of Nirvana's T.V. performances or scenes from their In Utero tour. Overall this is a great resource for any Nirvana fan who wants to dig deeper into this band.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible for sheer variety.......2007-05-06

I like the demos a lot, I am a songwriter myself and they remind me that even Kurt Cobain figured out his songs on his own. As far as some having a problem with no b sides, most of the B sides you wanted are on this! Including D-7, Even In His Youth, I Hate Myself And I Want To Die, Gallons of Rubbing Alcohol, Marigold, Moist Vagina, Curmudgeon, Verse Chorus Verse, Aneurysm, with the only missing songs being Spank Thru and You Know You're Right (Which I'll admit is no good that the only way you can have that song is by buying the greatest hits collection). In the Butch Vig Teen Spirit Version the guitar sounds much more like the guitars of Garbage (Vig's band) than the raw visceral guitar on the Nevermind recording.

While a B side collection would be an excellent companion piece to the Greatest Hits collection and it would be great if the company would make one, these are now probably my favorite Nirvana discs I own for the sheer rawness of the recordings. Nirvana was a big fan of minimalism, and while I do not like every track, the Sage covers, Sappy, Oh The Guilt, the Here She Comes Now cover, and the White Lace And Strange cover (Proving once and for all that Cobain could actually play guitar), are some of my favorite Nirvana tracks ever.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar Collection Of Rarities In High-Quality Sound . . ........2007-05-04

this says it best. three discs of previously hard-to-find Nirvana b-sides
and rarities all mastered in high-quality sound. most of these tracks were
only available on the Outcesticide releases in the '90s (with poor sound quality and terribly overpriced). at the time, this is the only access we
had to any Nirvana material of this type. most of us could not get enough of this band back in the day, so we would pay whatever we had to get it.
the first three discs are a collection of live, b-side and rare tracks in chronological order (for the most part) and the fourth disc is a DVD of
the band in December 1988 (with former drummer Chad Channing) practicing
at Chris Novoselic's house (bet his mother wasn't happy) with a Sub Pop video of "In Bloom" and other greatness. i have owned this for over two
years now, and at least one of these discs rarely ever leave my CD changer. very enjoyable. if you're even a moderate fan, get this, it is worth it !!!

Originally intended as a stopgap record following the massive success of Nirvana's Nevermind, the archival Incesticide album has taken on an added significance in light of subsequent events. Consisting of outtakes, demos, non-album singles, and live BBC sessions, it's a fascinating if less-than-truly essential listening experience. Highlights include the rip-roaring childhood memoir "Sliver" and its caustic companion (from a pre-Nevermind single) "Dive." There's also a brilliant cover of the Vaselines' "Molly's Lips." Particularly harrowing, however, are Kurt Cobain's liner notes, which at times sound eerily like his suicide note, deriding the fame and money that came upon him like a tsunami, and ultimately wiped him out. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars awesome, awesome stuff.......2007-07-18

this is such an under-rated set of B-sides and demos. this is some of nirvanas best music! best songs dive, sliver, staind, son of a gun, polly and aneurysm. some of them though are just plain bad like hairspray queen and mexican seafood. still, a must own for any true nirvana fan or for just the casual listener.

Hey Kids!
You like yelling!
You like weird guitars!
You like dead artists!

Well, this album is for you!!!

I like most of the tracks on this album, although they are all kind of dumb lyrically...

but i love the versions of Aneurysm, Polly and Been A Son they have on here. have never heard those versions before and they ROCK!

5 out of 5 stars The pain identified by millions.......2007-03-06

Brilliant collage of Nirvana works and a must have album for any Nirvana fan. Whenever I hear Incesticide I think back to when i was 15 - 16 years old and would mosh around my basement in flannels with long hair and converse sneaks. We all were influenced so much by his music and style in the short time he was in the spotlight. That in itself is a special acomplishment. But that is now somewhat overshadowed by an eerie feeling every time I hear a Nirvana song, knowing that he (kurt)is dead and the circumstances of his death. He died a year younger than I am now at 27. What a bad ending to what couldve been a better story. He was one of the best singer/song writers of our time. Too bad it was such a short run. At any rate buy the album and peek into the mind of one of the great artistic geniouses of our time.

4 out of 5 stars 1, 3, and 5 stars..........2007-03-03

A handfull of essentials, a handfull 3.5 stars, and a handfull of garbage.

Don't feel like you fail as a fan if a third of what you hear on this album makes you feel like it was a waste of your money. Die hard fan or not, no one should feel compelled to like an album just because they like the band. Songs like Sliver and Aneurysm own hard, and a couple songs like Dive most fans of the band will like. There's also some garbage mixed in though that only hardcore-nothing-Nirvana-does-isn't-totally-awsome-fans would really enjoy.

Bottom line: Either find a cheap used copy, or listen to the tracks online and download the ones that don't blow.

Album Description

You know it. With the lights out, it's less dangerous. These lullaby renditions of Nirvana's best-loved songs turn the volume way down, while turning up the dreaminess of their pop hooks. In many ways, this album echoes the simple pleasures and innocence of infancy and childhood. Childish tra-la-la's tempered the distortion of Nirvana's own songs. Chimes, glockenspiels and other gentle instruments temper Nirvana's wild spirit for your little one. "Smells Like Teen Spirit?" Smells like nap time.

Great way to introduce your child to music w/out going the classical or 'Barney' route.

4 out of 5 stars Good lullaby CD.......2006-11-05

I really enjoyed this CD for myself and my baby. The songs are not heavy at all. Basically, it's just the Nirvana song played w/bouncier instruments. The songs are really good and it was kind of fun to guess which song was playing because it's not really noticable that you're listening to Nirvana. We have also bought some Baby Einstein Mozart and it was not nearly as enjoyable as this CD. I found it very relaxing to listen to.I especially enjoyed the About a Girl track. My baby did fall asleep to the CD the one time we listened to it.
My CD did come w/some cracks on the case.

When it first appeared, Bleach seemed like a tuneful approximation of what grunge rock in the Northwest United States was supposed to sound like--gruff, enraged, sometimes tuneful, sometimes silly. Singer Kurt Cobain had the pipes to belt out such power trash as "Mr. Moustache" and the Shocking Blue's "Love Buzz," but considering the sheer volume of frustrated tuneage coming out of Seattle in 1989, it was easy to miss Bleach's subtler textures. In retrospect, "Negative Creep" and "About a Girl" are the obvious standouts that point toward the strum and bang attack that would catapult Nevermind to the top of the charts. But this is also a band without drummer Dave Grohl; his predecessor, Chad Channing (and also the Melvins' Dale Crover), while competent, is no Grohl. Producer Jack Endino gave this album the best sound $600 could buy. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Very good album, perhaps Nirvana's best of all.......2007-07-23

So, a review for this product... well, I'd say nothing but the very best of Nirvana so far, case there will be more songs published after Sliver: The best of the box. I love In utero, I like Nevermind, I like Incesticide also, but Bleach is another world for me. I am a musician myself and play guitar and/or sing... if it's me I'd only say Nirvana is: this album. Raw, pure, good music, alternative as much as it could be, new frontiers reached with now more or less familiar songs like: School, Negative Creep, About A Girl and Blew and less known but all worth it buying this product like Big Cheese and Sifting. I play'em all every now and then. Nirvana fans hello! Do me a favour... Please buy it. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars KURT 4EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-19

I don't have much to say, because everyone has his own opinion, but if you like a great and a really sound, you have to buy this CD, because it is the first album of the greater grunge band.
NIRVANA >> ONE OF THE FEW BEST BANDS OF THE WORLD... ETERNALLY...
KURT LIVES!!!

5 out of 5 stars Kurt played all the guitar.......2007-06-15

One reviewer said that the playing was better here because Kurt only played rhythm, but Jason Everman joined the band after the album was recorded and only got his name in the credits because he paid for the recording.
That being said, this is a great album and the Nirvana album I listen to most. Every song is great, even the ones that aren't. I've been listening to Nirvana for years and this is the only record of theirs that I can listen to nonstop without getting tired of after awhile.

5 out of 5 stars I miss Kurt Cobain........2007-04-14

I am a 20 year old black kid and no one would expect me to listen to Nirvana, but i've been listening to them since 92', the first song I ever heard was smells like teen spirit, i remember the son of the family my mother worked for gave me the nevermind cd and I was blown away, I was only five or six but I loved the hell out of Nirvana. Bleach was given to me as a cassette by the same person and this would be Nirvana's foundation, the best album they ever made, every song is listenable without skipping, unlike incesticide or in utero. If you are just getting into Nirvana start here this is a classic because it has that raw punk-metal sound, school has to be the greatest song ever. There are few rockers such as Kurt and Marilyn Manson, who have the most rugged and violent voices, this is a true talent, you can feel Kurt's voice not just hear it. His voice is the greatest in rock if you ask me, from sing-songy, to scream, to violent howl, he made the best rock songs ever, from his voice to his guitar playing (oh my god), to the whole melody of the song + lyrics=perfection. He is and was the greatest because he had fans of all races and im proof of that, even though i didnt live in a suburban area I was the only kid in the "ghetto" listening to this and I've been a fan since 6 years old. If you dont have unplugged you should be arrested and sentenced to life. R.I.P Kurt.

5 out of 5 stars Bleach.......2007-04-12

Nirvana-Bleach *****

Nirvana's realt debut, yes there was a band before the over hyped Nevermind. Bleach is a phenomonal album, it's Nirvana at their most honest and pure, not to mention raw. This is their most true to punk album, really the heart and soul of what would become grunge. This along with the earliest albums by Soundgarden and Alice In Chains debut Facelift and the Mudhoney albums were the real start of grunge as a respectable genre.

Here on Bleach it is clearly not the classic lineup that made the band famous. Dave Growl is not on drums, Chad Channing is, and Kurt Cobain is not the only guitar player. No at the time the band also had Jason Everman to play lead which is why the guitar playing on this album is better then the rest of the other Nirvana albums because Kurt does not play lead here, just ryhthm like is is good at. While this album much like the lineup are not that famous it is truly a classic and gave us some of the most memorable songs of the bands short lived career.

'Blew' 'About A Girl' 'Negative Creep' Mr. Moustache' and 'Downer' are all NIrvana classics. 'Negative Creep' actually inspired Slash to form Velvet Revolver. 'About A Girl' has really become a radio staple since Cobains death, and has really just become an all around rock n' roll classic. lesser famous songs like 'Paper Cut' 'Big Cheese' and 'Love Buzz' are also great songs, actually some of the best on the album.

Kurts vocals are very raw here and much more personal. On 'School' you can here he is really singing about something he is passioned about. Because the production on the album is horrible compared to Nevermind and In Utero the band sounds more authentic and personal. This album is by far the best Nirvana album. All of the bands albums, this, Nevermind, In Utero, and even the rarities Incesticide all do not contain one bad song, but this album has the best songs. This was when Cobain wasnt whigging out about the pressures of fame or what ever his personal crisis, and he wasnt totally currupt on drugs so his mind was under control of what ever he was on at a given time. This is the most true to blue album of what Nirvana really was, even Cobain said they completly changed and sold out after this album. So if you want a real Nirvana album, and a real poetic experince from Cobain, then this is the way to go.

Kurt Cobain's former bandmates Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl clearly had an agenda in compiling From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, the second of what will no doubt be a long line of posthumous Nirvana albums. Because of its somber, intense nature, the first post-Cobain release, MTV Unplugged in New York, was largely perceived as music for a wake--an impression reinforced by MTV's constant airings of the special in the days following Cobain's suicide. But that acoustic detour aside, the Nirvana live experience was always about displaying a lust for life--not a death wish--with all the energy the musicians could muster. Wishkah offers 16 songs spanning the band's career, all delivered in the loudest, most frenzied, and sometimes the sloppiest versions imaginable. In the opening "Intro," a snippet of pre-show noise, Cobain screams his heart out in joyful contrast to the haunted screams on "Where Did You Sleep Last Night." Then the group launches into "School," which ends with the spirited chorus "Don't be sad." Indeed, it's impossible to dwell on the maudlin when listening to these renditions of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Sliver," "Heart-Shaped Box," and "Negative Creep"--they're too loud and too full of life. But while it should be applauded, Wishkah isn't the great lost Nirvana album--there are no unheard gems to add to the catalog--and in the end, it isn't nearly as essential as any of the band's studio albums--or even the downbeat but revelatory Unplugged. --Jim Derogatis

To everyone who has had or still does have an ambition in music, also loves Nirvana, you all have to have this record. It's a success in the world of music and recordings anyways... The tracks are chosen exactly the way it suits your ear and also put together so it seems the right people have made this compilation of live Nirvana performances. Intro is definitely the one, Kurt screaming before the School song riff is played. All the songs are amongst the Nirvana famous ones and the sound is great! The atmosphere can be relived once for ever for this great rock n' roll band. Buy it!

oh my god this album is soooo goood. any nirvana fan appreciates the raspy voice of k. cobain so wait until you hear it here, live. very rough and it sounds great. i especially like drain you. spank thru is also on here which is a rare treat. if you are a nirvana fan then this is a must own.

5 out of 5 stars greatest hits 'live'.......2007-07-13

Great tracklisting, lots of fun upbeat cuts without the majority of the band's downer tracks. Really well sequenced. A touch of bleach, nevermind and in utero all mixed into one recorded performance. Also see the muddy banks of wishkah paperback version, a must for all deafs.?

5 out of 5 stars Passionate, Angry, Unpolished.......2007-06-27

I'll preface this review by noting that my favorite Nirvana album - and I'm sure I'm not alone in this - is "MTV's Unplugged in NYC." That album is notably softer (in volume and energy) than this one, but "From the Muddy Banks" still scores a solid five stars.

The tracks are taken from various live concerts, and here's where buying a hard copy rather than a digital one comes in handy: Krist Novoselic (Cobain's long-time friend and music partner) provides great narrative commentary in the liner notes, identifying the concert dates and locations for the songs as well as providing context of the band's relative success/obscurity for the 1989-1994 time frame it covers. The songs themselves are raw, unpolished, and fueled by the energy of the audience. A word of warning: Nirvana concerts typically involved a lot of screaming by both the band and the audience, but don't be turned off by the messy noise of the intro. A little perseverance will bring you a few tracks in and the lyrics/sound that changed rock (how many bands, even today in 2007, still sound like a second-rate version of Nirvana?) will hook you.

This is not the album for someone just becoming acquainted with Nirvana, but you don't have to be a hardcore fan to enjoy it either. Kurt Cobain wrote catchy, angry, passionate songs and his love of music (if not fame) was most evident in his live performances. It's absolutely impossible to listen to the CD without finding your feet moving a little.

5 out of 5 stars Live energy.......2007-06-27

This is not the best live album by Nirvana, but it is definitely the most accurate at capturing the energy this band created. A must for any fan.

4 out of 5 stars Quality stop-gap EP from the Spree.......2007-06-22

While the main reason for this EP's existence is to throw a bone to the fans who were waiting for "The Fragile Army" (the title says it all), this is not to be passed over. "Mental Cabaret" is a strong track as is "I'm Calling," a song which has become a personal favorite of mine. Sadly the latter is not included on "Army," so it joins the covers as a track exclusive to this release. Longtime fans of Tim's work with Tripping Daisy will likely appreciate the jubilant update to the already jubilant "Sonic Bloom," which benefits greatly from the added harp, horn and choir parts. The Psychedelic Furs cover is a nice addition and the band's update of Nirvana's "Lithium" will either make you grin ear to ear or make you throw the CD out the window. All in all, a strong release (unless you are a devout follower in the Cult of the terribly over-rated Kurt Cobain).

I think this a really good ep. I like the songs that are going to be on the new cd..Well worth the price

2 out of 5 stars Euphoria is wearing off.......2007-03-28

My first exposure to this band was a live performance a few years ago, and I was swept up in the euphoria. I bought the first CD, and I thought, "Meh, okay, so they're a LIVE band first and foremost." I bought the second CD and was like, "Meh, okay, so they're STILL a live band." The included bonus DVD of a live performance was great.

I saw them a few more times, and they were still pretty entertaining, but it was becoming clearer to me that the appeal was in the novelty of their appearance and the joyous presentation they gave onstage.

I bought this CD, and now, I think, I'm probably done buying Polyphonic Spree CDs. Kurt Cobain is turning over in his grave, and I'm not feeling so good myself.
