    Product Description

This enterprising San Diego quintet delivers the goods with their debut album, aptly titled "1". Garage rock fans will fall all over themselves, from the opening staccato chords and hand claps of the incessantly catchy "The Night Before", but there is much more than meets the eye here. Check out the classic 80's big guitar sound that envelopes, "Women In Magazines", as melodic a song as you're gonna hear. You'd swear it's a lost hit. And that's the key- great songs you want to hear over and over. But there's more. There's beats mixed with acoustic guitars, drenched over distorted vocals and what sounds like a mellotron, as well as slightly Eastern European folk phrasing on "Sleepover", and then there's moody Velvet's-ish introspection on the sparse, yet compelling "Saturdays". On an album dripping with potential hits, top tracks seem to be the minor chord gem "I Know Now" and especially the driving "Come To Say Hello", but all the tracks here are should be radio perrenials. It's a sterling debut album, an embarrassment of riches. --Alan Fleagle London, England

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Bowie's triumphant return.......2000-07-18

After languishing in self-induced pop hell throughout the 80's, Bowie finally got back on track with the release of '1.Outside', an experimental, maudlin piece of work that harkend back to his late 70's material... a fine LP by itself, but most fans were left disatisfied with lack of good hooks and the depressing themes. Well Bowie is back in the game with this one - striaght from the opening, squealing guitar riff that punctuates 'Little Wonder' through to the instumental (w/ sampled vocals) of 'Law (earthlings on fire)' with several detours and stops along the way. Every track on here is notable in it's own way - the heavy, mechanized oppresion of 'I'm Afraid of Americans' is brilliant and 'Seven Years in Tibet' recalls some of the loftier moments of 'Heroes'. The Ziggy vocals return on the operatic 'Looking For Sattelites' but lest you think that DB is simply rehashing old themes and glories, be aware that the whole framwork of this album is done in a hyperkinetic drums 'n' bass style that works exceptionally well with Bowie's voice. Add the 'Aladin Sane'-era keyboards of Mike Garson, the astounding, noisy guitar work of Reeves Gabrels (an institution in his own right) and the backing vocals and bass of Gail Ann Dorsey and it's easy to see why this is one disc that any self avowed Bowie fan would be glad to own. This edition also comes with a track unreleased elsewhere - ' Back Through to 1.9.A-2' that actually recalls the later work of Sigue Sigue Sputnik and makes the extra cost worth it. All in all, a wonderful collector's item and a great representation of some of Bowie's finer work.
