Yay!.......2007-05-06
A true test to how good an album is: how many times can u listen to it in a row and still discover something new with each listen. By the 5th spin i'm hooked. Truly a bunch of guys to celebrate. Off-key, puzzling, beautiful tapestry of funk, rock and piano. When the piano kicks in on 'cough coughing' i had butterflies in my chest. I can't wait to hear their other albums.
I am blown away........2007-04-12
Wow. This band is truly refreshing. They are a rainbow paisley oasis in a desert of brown Dockers. I hope they stick around for a long time.
Menomena's First Album.......2005-10-12
First of all, "I Am the Fun Blame Monster" is an awesome album title because it is an anagram of "Menomena's First Album"...who does that?! Regardless of their inventive album title, Menomena's sound is also wildly creative. The thought and experimentation that went into this album is incredible and I hope everyone gets to experience the wonder of the monster...plus, the album presentation is something to be proud of and, best of all, fun to play with. I bought the album for my boyfriend and was very tempted to keep it for myself ;)
Glad I found this band.......2005-03-13
I'm almost ashamed to say that I've just recently started listening to this band, even though they hail from my city, good old gritty Portland, OR. Though I really can't comment on the mathematics and computer programming of this music (though somehow that impresses me in a geeky kind of way), I can tell you in my humble opinion, that this album is mature and sophisticated, yet not at all inaccessible. I'm thoroughly impressed with their crashing orchestral sound... and equally blown away by the fact that they totally rock!!
As it's been said before, there is this sort of low-fi Radiohead quality to their stuff, but I hestitate labeling or associating Menomena too closely with them. After listening to this album with complete abandon, I feel like I've been through an Experience. I'm spent, but thoroughly invigorated and hopeful.
"Try and stop us now!".......2005-01-11
This little Fun-Blame Monster sure came outta nowhere, didn't it? I mean, we have pitchfork throwing up a "featured review" one moment, followed by a chorus of indie kids and online mags screaming "hell ya!" and then it's forgotten in time for the year-end best-of lists... It came and went so fast that I'd mostly forgotten about it until I randomly came upon a used copy at the local record shop. The crude dragon drawing on the front insisted that I give it a sample listen, and, rolling my eyes, I grudgingly obliged. Now about this local record store, I have to give them credit that they even have listening stations for the used c.d.s. Still, they make it pretty clear that they don't want you there too long by making it very uncomfortable- you stand in a little booth with nothing to lean on or sit on. I wasn't planning on being there too long- only 30 secs a song, 9 songs, a quick little five minutes, right? I pressed play...and stood there for the whole 45 minute runtime. Man, it blew me away.
The first thing that sucks you in is the drumming. It pummels you with complex, danceable, near-hip-hop beats- not unlike those from the Flaming Lips Soft Bulletin. And then, the melodies come in, weave a tapestry in your head, and keep you eagerly anticipating each new moment. Piano, Saxophone, Keyboards and bass flow together in most unexpected and blissful ways. I can't remember when I last heard such bewilderingly ornate melodies- those perfect tunes that never repeat a single time more than they have to, and that reward every time you listen but are never to obtuse to leave your head.
Each song exemplifies an unique approach, but it's a wonderfully sequenced album with many of the pieces flowing into each other. Really, the only weak link are the lyrics, which are pleasant but certainly not standout. But this is POP music of the highest order. The whole stands together as an ode to the clarity that comes out of loneliness- those 4 am moments when you stare out your window, perfectly content to be perfectly alone.
Yup, it was "left-field" alright, so left-field it seems it's already been forgotten. That's a real shame- this is, without a doubt, one of the most brilliant pop records in recent years. Grab it while you can.

Dwight Yoakam occupies a singular position in contemporary country. No artist has better balanced mainstream commercial success with artistic, alt-country credibility, while somehow managing to embody both the music's most traditional and its most progressive impulses. Blame the Vain marks a milestone for Yoakam as his first self-produced effort since splitting with producer/guitarist/bandleader Pete Anderson. While the material seems to document the end of a relationship and the hope for romantic renewal, there's a freewheeling playfulness to the arrangements--the bongo-driven, rock & roll urgency of "International Heartache," the faux British accent and synthesizer intro on "She'll Remember," the shifting time signatures of "Watch Out." The tear-in-your-beer balladry of "Lucky That Way" and "Does It Show" should satisfy those who take their honky-tonk straight, no chaser, while the homage paid to timeless Roy Orbison ("Just Passin' Time"), early Johnny Cash ("I'll Pretend") and later Elvis Presley ("When I First Came Here") attests to the range and richness of Yoakam's artistry. He may no longer have the hits like he once did, but he hasn't lost the vision. --Don McLeese

Can't go a day without dwight's music.......2007-07-07
I have followed Dwight's carreer for about 25 years. I have been unable to go a whole day without his music. I wouldn't want to live without it. He has given me something to keep me going on - literally. He uses words and sounds so brilliantly it brings tears to my eyes. This is just one more brilliant cd I listen too constantly. Hey Dwight, when's the next cd coming out? I'll be first in line! - I am his number #fan of all time - I do declair. I hope when I go to heaven that I will still be able to hear the wonderful music - if the music is only in hell that's where I'll go.
best album ever.......2007-06-23
this is just the best album I ever heard. on every album there's a track that don't sound that good as you want but on blaim the vain everything is perfect. my favorit is the titel track blaim the vain. I'll pretend rocks like the 50's. so, buys this album, you won't regret it. Dwight, your concert last year (aug 2006) in amsterdam was great, a setlist of 39 songs, it was fantastic. come back soon to the netherlands
Awesome.......2006-12-25
This is one of my favorite Dwight cds. Many catchy guitar riffs. The song that most people have heard of from it, 'Intentional Heartache' is hardly the best song, but it rules. In fact, the song Blame the Vain is one of my favorite songs of all time.
What we've all been waiting for!.......2006-11-10
It's been too long Dwight! This is the perfect follow-up to his last CD!
Best Dwight Yet!.......2006-07-20
I have been a fan of Dwight Yoakam's music for years and this is his best CD yet. Very dry recording as if Dwight and the band are performing in your living room. As usual, great songwriting and musicians.

Soothe yourself with this album..........2007-05-10
I listen to this on repeat while at work to keep from getting too frustrated by the sharp edges of this work world. It offers a soothing, softening, and soulful retreat. The name of the game with Blame Sally is balance - each artist has unique talents expressed in different ways in each track, and fills out a blended and beautiful, yet still simple sound. Put simply: I haven't enjoyed listening to female vocalists this much since the Indigo Girls back in college. Man that was a long time ago. Thanks for making this.

Unfortunately Brazilian Music is not Latin Music!.......2006-02-10
I am Brazilian and I have been a big fan of Ms. Gorme for her extraordinary voice and feeling when singing in her native language and in Spanish. So I should be specially proud about this album but ... there's something wrong here!
This is one her albums with Bossa Nova ensemble but arrangements do not hip as they should. Unfortunately, Brazilian Music is not to be approached as a Latin sound with 'maraccas' and all that percussion typical from Cuba.
Despite this big discomfort, you'll find great renditions of 'Dansero', 'The Sweetest Sounds', 'Almost Like Being in Love' and the Brazilian samba 'The Message'.
When Will A Career Retrospective Be Available?.......2005-05-08
What a shame that "Blame It On the Bossa Nova" is not a greatest hits album! And, yes, what a shame that her other CD which appears to be a greatest hits package - Golden Hits - is not a definitive retrospective of her hits either! What's going on? Almost everyone of her CDs contains only a few tracks. When will we get a chance to hear "Don't try to Fight It Baby" or "I Want You To meet My Baby"? Please give us a CD or double CD packed with this wonderful woman's hits!
Most versatile singing star!.......2004-06-18
During this period of pop music, Eydie Gorme was the most versatile of pop singers. Her Columbia period & that just before were all genre-themed albums. Her 1st on Columbia, BLAME IT ON THE BOSSA NOVA, was her only jazz venture. The title tune which was her biggest comemrcial hit, 11 other jazz styled tracks , & 2 bonus Bossa Nova tracks compose this cd.. That title tune was fun, arty & as nuanced & off keyed as any Peggy Lee. Whatever the instrument is in the song's middle, it works just fine! The cd sound, which makes E.G.'s voice sound richer, is better than the lp sound. I can't think of any other singer who did more to make her voice so different to fit the respective material. I stated that Jo Stafford was the most verstatile of singers. Well, then, Eydie Gorme took ovet the honor followed by Linda Ronstadt. With today's music, who knows & who cares! Still, Linda did not change her voice as much as she did genres; Eydie & Jo could make their voices sound different. During Eydie's period, her big selling Blame It On Bossa Nova & Grammy winning If He Walked Into My Life were the farthest vocal stretch in pop music. In the BLAME IT ON BOSSA NOVA opener, One Not Samba, Gorme strays very far from that note. Paradoxically, she sings every note on key. Eydie starts & ends with that glorious high note & scats so well Ella must have cringed! In Dansero, Eydie sings the same line off & on key to give stylistic & artistic effects to the same feeling of love. The cross overs to jazz (Melodie D' Amour, The Sweetest Sounds, Almost Like In Being In love, The Coffee Song, Moon River, & I Remember You ) artfully equal the stritly jazz ones, (Desfinado, The Message, The Gift, Dansero, & One Nore Samba) while the big hit nicely supports those "better songs". Eydie was quite the revealation. She was jovial, dramatic, wide-ranging & vibrant. Most jazz singers have to stretch their voices to do this materail; but on those other 11 & the 2 bouus songs, she was straight on key, never flinching. She was & is what other singsers could never be: EYDIE GORME! PS. Only Eydie could make Moon River really swing. It's that's song definitive version because everyone else did it as a ballad.

Customer Reviews:
A Long Awaited "Gem".......2007-07-09
My LP of this show was totally worn out, so I'm absolutely delighted to have this on such a great sounding CD. Davis is right up there with other musical luminaries such as Hepburn in COCO and Bacall in WOMAN OF THE YEAR and APPLAUSE. All three were non-singers who acted, and their recordings are really just a joy to have to offset soprani like Cook, Chenowith, and Lukker.
This really is a must have recording for any true musical comedy lover who wants the unusual and historical. Davis's "Turn Me Loose on Broadway" is wonderful from her "Mistah conductah, iff You Pleeees" to her slightly off tempo "hey" in the dance break. Davis did try to sing several times through her career. Frank Loesser's "They're Either Too Young or Too Old" has been on a few collections, and there was that failed musical version of THE CORN IS GREEN entitled MISS MOFFAT that closed in Philadelphia. Betty Davis wasn't a good singer, but she tried!
The supporting cast is excellent, and I think it's just a joy to hear an old-school musical by one of the forgotten greats, Vernon Duke. That's why I'm really pleased to have the Duke bonus tracks on the CD as well. It's a great value with Davis, Duke, and Lawrence Welk and his orchestra as well. The album was coveted for years, and it's just wonderful to have it in better sound than it ever was.
Bette Davis in a musical...yes, you heard right.......2006-10-05
Bette Davis in a musical? In 1952, when her film career started on yet another downward spiral and she was unceremoniously labelled as "box office poison", the legendary Ms Davis decided to do the unthinkable, and made her Broadway musical debut in TWO'S COMPANY, a fluffy little revue that would have certainly folded a lot quicker if a mega-watt star like Davis was not in the starring role.
TWO'S COMPANY ran on the box office power of Davis, and the moment she became ill and started missing performances, the closing notices were posted (the show limped along for 90 performances). Nevertheless, this curious jewel of a show was recorded, and now gets it's CD premiere thanks to British boutique label Sepia.
Apparently, Davis was so embarrased by her performance, that she attempted to buy every single copy of the original LP in order to destroy them. One can just imagine Davis (in full Margo Channing mode) swaggering into a record store and slamming a pile of TWO'S COMPANY albums onto the sales counter ("don't bother to wrap `em!").
While Davis was never a singer, she croaks out her songs quite well, and what she lacks in musicality she compensates with comedy and sheer brio.
Performing the more demanding material is Ellen Hanley, known to musical fans for her Tony-winning role as Thea in "Fiorello!"; as well as Adrianna in the 1963 Off-Broadway revival of "The Boys from Syracuse", and replacing Polly Bergen in "First Impressions" (the Jane Austen/'Pride & Prejudice' musical of 1959).
Sepia's remaster of the TWO'S COMPANY album (taken from original 78's) is quite crisp and clean, with some slight hiss and sonic wobble in certain areas (like towards the end of "Haunted Hot Spot"), although we are lucky to have this title on disc in the first place.
Known for their copious bonus tracks, Sepia do not disappoint, and the TWO'S COMPANY disc is filled out with extensive supplementaries (Nancy Walker singing "I Can't Get Started" and Jack Smith with "I'm Gonna Ring the Bell Tonight"); and a whole "Vernon Duke plays Vernon Duke" section.
Now that TWO'S COMPANY has been released on compact disc, we can finally hear what all the fuss was about.

Alana Davis' debut Blame It On Me delves deep into themes of non-conformity and individualism, presented largely as jazzy lullabies. Though Davis has confessed to not being very hip to the sorority of modern vocalists, she opens the record with a reworking of Ani DiFranco's "32 Flavors." But Davis is no elder stateswoman, either. At 23, the New Yorker is just coming into her own, and the subject matter of her songs shows an artist with a youthful perspective - "The weight of the world has fallen/ and the rubble is at my feet," she sings on The Weight of the World" - even though she has the voice of someone twice her age. It's almost as if she's out to assert her unique place in the circuit of singer-songwriters by returning to the heart and soul that made them so popular in the first place. --Nick Heil
Customer Reviews:
Alana Davis' CD.......2005-09-12
Alana Davis' 'Blame It On Me' was a very enjoyable cd that I am glad to add in my collection. I am surprised that I haven't heard much about her until recently. The girl gots some soul! She has a very soothing yet sometimes throaty pitch to her voice. Everytime I hear her music it takes me back to my college days when I frequented open mic night at various dives, heard an unknown artist and walked away with the summation, "That kids got talent! I think they'll make it!"
Ruined it.......2005-08-03
Alana ruined Ani DiFranco's "32 Flavors." I'm a huge Ani fan, and listened to 32 flavors by Alana, and was thoroughly disappointed at how different and... how much worse it was.
Wonderful album - a timeless classic.......2005-06-03
Alana's album is a timeless classic, not bogged down by current trends or other musical fads. Her album is wonderful. This one is definitely one of my favorites of all time. The vibe reminds of Ben Harper, marQue, Jack Johnson, Tracy Chapman, and other great singer/songwriters. This is definitely a must listen! Alana Davis is the real deal.
Blame Alana for a GREAT album.......2005-05-01
This record is by far a jewel. On her debut Alana gives us a range of emotion and heartfelt prose. Every song is carefully presented and orchestrated to make you feel you're there beside her or that she is speaking directly to you. My favorite tracks are Free, Murder and Rest of Yesterday.
BAD VERSION OF 32 FLAVORS.......2004-12-20
I cannot express how super PISSED i was to hear alana's cover of ani's 32 flavors on the freakin radio. It was chopped up for mainstream listening and if she had any respect for Ani's work she would have never covered the song the way that she did. I only looked her up because I was curious to see who the idiot was that tore up my favorite Ani song. I like her voice, but I have no respect for her work. Get a new manager Alana. Don't cover any more Ani songs...please.

Avoid. Avoid. Avoid........2006-11-09
Have to agree with other negative reviews. Winced visibly upon listening. Attempts to "get it" by engaging in repeated listenings just brought further punishment-- even copping my most "avant-garde" attitude, I could not hear anything compelling on this disc. It was a mistake buying this disc that I will...Blame on My Youth...For an antidote, go buy Jane Monheit's disc with this title track on it.
Ouch!.......2006-02-02
First, my wife LOVES this disc; she'd give it a much more favorable review.
It appears the woman has talent and perhaps even a good voice, but, for the most part I absolutely hate the way she uses her voice on this album. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. On some songs, she sounds like an actor on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE parodying a jazz singer, holding notes forever for no apparent reason or overdoing the "emotion" badly. On others, it seems like she screeches and whines and shouts and bends the pitch until the only word that comes to mind is painful. Ouch! Stop it! You've got more talent than that. Sing with some control and good taste!
One of the dullest albums I've ever heard.......2006-01-22
I picked this album up used, mainly because of "Purple Avenue" (originally done by Tom Waits). I was sorely disappointed with this CD. It had absolutely no feel, no flavor. Since I couldn't return it, it is now serving as a coaster. It's probably tied with Metallica's St. Anger album for being the worst in my collection.
A Fair Album With Some Stand-outs.......2005-07-13
The first time i became aware of the holly cole trio, i was watching a t.v concert special, possibly new years eve in montreal. i was utterly captivated by the dark haired singer in long black evening gown and long black gloves. When she sang she would find a point in the back of the auditorium and vocalize with such concentration and coolness, i couldn't take my eyes off her. a piano, a stand-up bass and a voice, absolute heaven.
This album has some stand-out songs, they are:
1. Trust in me- gorgeous, love it, calming and serene,BUT...
"trust in me, just in me, close your eyes and trust in me... slip into silent slumber, sail on a silver mist , slowly but surely you're senses will cease.. to exist"
At first i thought it was a beautiful sentiment, like a mother whispering to her child to fall asleep knowing she will protect him/her.But from the tone and wording,i swear she is lulling her victim into a false sense of trust. It turns out it is a song from the jungle book, the snake lulling mowgli? i don't remember the movie, but the song is awesome.
3.If i were a bell- i like this naughty little song, but HATE the violin. It was better in concert.
6. Calling you- now we're talking, a concert staple. "a hot dry wind, blows right through me" ...beautiful !!
7. God will- a song about infidelity. who will forgive? "god does, but i don't- god will, but i won't, that's the difference between god and me". Love it !!
If you like good Canadian Jazz, then you'll love this.......2005-05-10
Holly Cole's "Blame it on my Youth", is the perfect introduction to not only a great genre (Canadian Jazz) but to an even greater artist. Holly's version of "Trust in me" would put any snake under her spell (refer to the Jungle book)!! This album is a must have for all Holly Cole fans!!

Rachel is indeed Sweet.......2007-01-08
Probably one of the most overlooked talents of all times. If you have never heard of Rachel Sweet then search her on Amazon and buy everything that is available. She is indeed that good. If you don't melt when you hear "Then he Kissed Me" you may not truly be human.
The "SWEET"est voice you'll ever hear!.......2006-07-17
Rachel Sweet SHOULD have made it big in the music industry,
however due to poor representation and lack of promotion, this
talented voice was left by the way-side.
Upon her arrival on the music scene, she was "the little girl
with the big voice".
Signed to the now-gone "Stiff" label, critics raved about the
talent of this young girl from Akron, Ohio. She had the voice
that SHOULD have sold more records (in my opinion) than
Madonna, Britney Spears, etc.
Rachel Sweet IS a great singer...PERIOD!
I am certain that I am not alone in saying "Rachel,we miss
you and want you back in the music scene!"
She did appear in several TV episodes ("Seinfeld", "Dream On",
"Night Court", etc.) and a few movies ("Gypsy", "Sing", "The
Investigator" and "All Tied Up"). Her parts were ALWAYS way too
brief! She's the reason "Cry-baby" is such a fun movie (she's
the singing voice of Amy Locane). She's the ONLY voice that
should have ever been used for "Barbie's" singing voice - she
was only one of several. If you can obtain a copy of the out-of-
print "Barbie" cd, I urge you to listen!
The best thing about Rachel is that she can do any style of
music. Her early singles for "Derrick" label were full out and
out country. Her "stiff" days consisted of country, rock and
roll and even a touch of blues as did her "columbia" days
with some added pop! I even have her singing "silver bells"
which is my favorite version of THAT song! She's done several
children's music which has become a fun part of my collection!
Her first two albums- "Fool Around" and "Protect The Innocent"
showcase the variety of her vocal talents. This collection of
her final two LPs for Columbia, show her in a different style,
slightly more mature. Her version of "shadows of The night" is
BETTER than Pat Benatar! Her only hit in the U.S. was "Everlasting Love" with Rex Smith. She deserved MORE HITS!
Where is Rachel now? She has done producing and writing for
several comedy sitcoms ("Sports Night", "Dharma and Greg",
"The Nanny", etc.) and hosted her own "WAY TOO SHORT-LIVED"
series on the Comedy Channel titled "The Sweet Life".
(All you DVD companies out there-obtain the rights and
get THIS series released!)
Lately there has been NO SIGN of this talented actress/singer.
RACHEL-WE MISS YOU !!!!!!!!!!
For those of you who have not been introduced to this great
talent-take the first step-PURCHASE THIS CD-LISTEN AND ENJOY-
then go from there!
Coulda / Shoulda Been Better.......2006-06-07
Man - these two disks just didn't hold up over time. Of Sweet's four disks, '....Then He Kissed Me' was her weakest anyway. Sorry - but anyone who is forced by a record company to duet w/Rex Smith is a goner.
That's not to say that there aren't some moments. "Shadows of the Night" is still better than Benatar's - but maybe that's because I knew it before Pat came out w/it. The rest of the disk just seems so amateurish. It really was beneath Sweet's talents and ability.
'Blame it on Love' is a little stronger. The material and production are hers - so in theory she'd have only herself to blame for her success or failure. It's really a draw. The first half of the album (or most of it) is actually quite good ("Voo Doo", "Paralyzed"), but after it hits "Cruisin' Love", it becomes like material on '....Then He Kissed Me'. Really nothing special.
Though Sweet's voice was probably strongest on her debut, her strongst material and diversity really shine on 'Protect the Innocent' - which is not domestically on CD.
Blame It On Bad Remastering.......2006-02-08
At long last these two great albums see the light of day on CD -- only to be botched by Sony/BMG/Collectibles. I have to disagree with the previous reviewer who raved about the "pristine remastered sound." It is harsh, compressed, nearly unlistenable! This is truly one of the worst-sounding CDs I have ever heard. Absolutely brutal! The first album, And Then He Kissed Me, is by far the worst; Blame It On Love fairing a little better. To top it off, the inserts are skimpy and don't reproduce any of the original artwork. No (re)mastering credits, or blame, are given. This whole production is a real shame and a disappointment. Here's hoping a reissue label out there (that actually cares about the music) gives these albums the proper treatment.
Contains Rachels' "Shadows of the Night" (slightly diff. lyrics)........2005-12-31
"... and then he kissed me" was not Rachels' greatest release but it did contain her FANTASTIC version of "Shadows of the Night" (Yes, the song that Pat Benatar turned into a hit). This version contains a few changes because Rachel added her own lyrics (Which Benatar removed).
"Blame it on Love" is the album that should have made Rachel a household name. "hearts on the line" is great power-pop. "Voodoo", "paralyzed" and "sticks and stones" showcase the different styles she is capable of.
Both albums have flaws and more than a few "duds" but they also have some real high points. When these two albums are combined together you just can't lose! If you missed Rachel Sweet in the 80's... you might want to give her a listen now. Better late than never!
As mentioned in another review, the sound quality on this CD suffers from poor re-mastering. The tracks on ".. then he kissed me" seem to have the highs and lows chopped off, almost as if you're listening to a collection of very compressed mp3's. The poor re-mastering and a slight "glitch" in the track "shadows of the night" detracts from the overall listening enjoyment of this CD. I'm glad these albums are finally on CD, but I was hoping for higher quality sound and was very surprised about the sound glitch in one of my favorite tracks!

Customer Reviews:
What's happened to Debbie?.......2005-04-15
I am not a staunch Gibson fan like most of the drooling 5-star reviews here. But I loved her in the 80's and think her to be a talented singer-songwriter who puts modern pop moppets to shame. I thought it was awesome when she broke into Broadway and made a steady career of it.
Then I heard 'Colored Lights'.
I ask, Debbie!(sorry, DEBORAH), what has happened to you??
Like others here, I applaud her choice to include lesser-known songs. But in doing so, it really behoves her to SELL them as great songs, not rework them for her own interpretation. I felt like I was listening not to the pure-toned, crystal voice of our favourite teen idol, but someone doing a bad impersonation of her. There is hardly a single line she sings which isn't punctured by bad ennunciation, poor phrasing or a lack of respect for the intent of the composers.
There were no gravelly growls(meant to sound sexy, no doubt, but too overdone to succeed), breathy sighs, uneven tone, lacklustre dynamics, excessive scooping, wavery pitch and lack of top range in the Debbie Gibson I remember. But her voice on this album is such a mere shadow of its youthful self that she resorts to these irritating vocal bandaids to get through the song. Any track that had a 'big finish' invariably caused her to run out of steam long before she got there. A belter, Deb is not.
(and I know what I'm talking about, I'm a trained singer myself. If Deborah has a singing teacher, he/she should be shot).
This album was a huge disappointment for me. I love Broadway, but Deb fails terribly to give these songs the great renditions they deserve.
I should add, I have never had the fortune to see Deb sing live, so for all I know, maybe she COULD have done these songs justice had she avoided the pop slant. But this album shows neither the songs nor any talent she still has to advantage at all.
Listen to some Idina Menzel if you want a pop-feel voice that can also out-Belt them all.
A Taste of Broadway.......2004-10-13
I've been a fan of her since God only knows. I know she's not just talented but she is very passionate of (her) music. Knowing that she moved herself into broadways, it's rather of a challenge for me to listen to the songs especially when I'm too familiar with her pop genre. But after a while, I'm used to it coz Debbie is still Debbie to me. She's not afraid of re-arranging the original song to her style, at least she knows what she's doing and again she's proven it. My most favourite track is "Colored Lights", it's light, cheerful, somewhat witty and, in a way, brings up my imagination of seeing her (and the casts) on stage performing the song. All in all, Debbie still has a class and style for us to share.
OUCH!.......2004-08-23
Deborah Gibson is a talented rock star. With a good musical director, she has proved herself to be a wonderful musical theatre performer. This album, however, is a very uneasy marriage of the two genres. She sings every showtune on the album as if it's a pop tune with horrendous bubble gum arrangements. I have seen Miss Gibson in two musicals and have heard her sing showtunes live on other occasions- she knows how to sing showtunes. On this album, however, she's trying to pander to her pop audience and in the process, she created an album that fails as a pop album and as a showtune album. I can only hope that Miss Gibson finds a better musical director the next time she decides to record showtunes.
(Deborah Gibson ) AT HER BEST!!!!.......2004-04-23
Deborah really sing's her heart out on this cd
and it is a must for all of Deborah's Fan's.
Please take the time out and listen to some clip's
of some of the song's from the album. Thank's.
Love You Deborah!!!!
You are the Best!!!!
Deborah delivers deliciously.......2004-02-13
After more than 15 years in the business, Deborah Gibson has learned many lessons and fulfilled many dreams. After 2001's horrifyingly misguided "M.Y.O.B.," she returns to the adult contemporary sound that landed her two number one hits on the Billboard charts, and turns that up a couple of notches. By selecting 13 showtunes from varying Broadway musicals, Gibson satisfies immensely, and delivers a unique compilation worthy of at least one full listen.
"Colored Lights" is not meant to be a showcase of hit tunes; many of the songs on this opus aren't radio hits. Instead, Gibson puts together a delicious smorgasbord of rhythmic melodies and heartfelt ballads that complement her voice (that, strangely enough, hasn't seemed to change that much after more than a decade in the industry).
What is also important to consider in one's evaluation of "Colored Lights" is that, while comparison with the original works/performers is inevitable, we should also take the time to consider that Gibson's pop sensibilities will always shine through. Perhaps it is for that reason, that Gibson has had the best of both pop stardom and Broadway success, that she gives new dimension to these melodies.
The standouts on this collection include "I'd Rather Leave While I'm in Love," which radio would do well to pick up, as the soothing melody and heartfelt delivery will find AC audiences easily; "On My Own," off "Les Miserables," where Gibson as Eponine sounds both heartbroken yet hopeful; the playful title track, from "The Rink," which features some of the most whimsical lyrics I've heard off Broadway thus far; "Raise the Roof," which is truly enjoyable in its pseudo-Latino reincarnation in Gibson's hands (yes, it does beg for a house remix; Gibson's gay audience will see to its success), and "Anytime (I Am There)," which is heartbreaking in its stark delivery, and is easily one of my top five Gibson tracks of all time.
Admittedly, Gibson can't overcome comparisons to the definitive versions of some of the songs. Let's face it: Debbie ain't no Barbra. Her versions of "I'm the Greatest Star" and "Who Are You Now?," while stellar on their own, just fall flat when compare to Streisand's. "Let Me Entertain You," off "Gypsy," ironically, isn't very entertaining, and "Blame It On The Summer Night" drags on.
All in all, "Colored Lights" puts together a collection of songs that are quite distinct and classy, and is easily one of the more worthy albums in Ms. Gibson's discography. She would do well to continue producing albums along this line instead of trying to fight the Britney's and Christina's, because those fads fade, and only the classics remain. Trust in "Colored Lights" to earn a well-deserved place in that section of your record collection.

JUST GOTTA HAVE THAT SONG!!!!.......2001-08-24
I first heard GREEN MIND at a night club, then again in that movie FEAR... I can never get enough of that song! cant wait to hear the rest of the cd, that one song is worth 5 stars and whatever I end up paying for it! I finally found it online now I just gotta own it! I guess I'm gonna have to pull out the credit card for this cd! ...
even just for Green Mind, it's worth it.......1999-04-18
Shoot, I'd pay 5 bucks to have Green Mind on cd. How can you not love the pure, hard-driving lyrics behind that tune? First time I heard it was in a movie called "Fear", and I made it my business to find out the credits to it. I also enjoyed the original rendition of Ohio.

For a band that conquered the near midwest markets and ruled the rock capital this latests piece of tripe should have stayed in the closet.
