Songs from the Big House

Album Description
This is a song cycle based on my experience teaching special education in the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice. It's a case history of the life of the kids I worked with. They were often parents at 13, themselves the offspring of inmates, illiterate, and learning disabled. In a state where only 35% are Aframerican, over 90% of the teenage prisoners are Aframerican. Contrary to what the warden told us in training, kids were chained to legless chairs, immobilized for hours, for misbehavior. An outrageous situation that I hope this music will bring attention and lead to correction of the corrections industry. The earlier a child enters the justice system, the greater the chance they will be in it for life. I hope you will enjoy as well as become provoked by the work.

Songs from Bear in the Big Blue House, which sends kids 2 and older an open invitation to a gigglefest, is bursting at the seams with simple melodies, goofy voices, and loopy, encouraging lyrics that linger. This 24-track is a testament to the late Jim Henson's genius for conjuring characters that bounce off one another with a just-right mix of confusion and harmony. An offshoot of the Disney Channel television show of the same name, Songs boasts the familiar Muppet-like housemates--caring and compassionate Bear; Tutter the high-strung mouse; orange Ojo, a junior bear; otters Pip and Pop; and Treelo the lemur. Bear's warm baritone finds its way onto every last track--he's clearly the head of the big blue household, though hardly its pluckiest resident--but each of the other characters comes clean about a kid-pertinent issue or two on these songs, too. Ojo, for example, relates the unfairness of getting spooked by big, scary monsters every time she goes to bed on "Go to Bed, Sleepy Head," and Tutter tackles his type-A tendencies on "Take Time to Smell the Cheese" and "Quiet Time." In contrast, some of these songs are pure, message-free fun: Pip and Pop momentarily become the Salt 'n' Pepa of the puppet kingdom on "Otter Love," a hip-hoppy ode to the warm fuzzies, and Bear and Treelo bust a toe-twitching move on "The Bear Cha-Cha-Cha." Fans of the show will know most songs and appreciate their accessibility and portability on disc or tape. Those who aren't already tuned in, on the other hand, will take a shining to this oddball crew given this smartly accessible musical introduction. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars THIS CD ROCKS! !!! PARENTS will LOVE this as much as kids.......2004-01-17

This is a great CD and we owned it a couple years prior to seeing the show. The songs have great lyrics and fab sounds. buy this for yourself and everyone you know. This is not your typical kids CD. My 4 year old loves this and now my 14 month old wants "Bear" when she is in the car. My husband even finds himself singing the songs in the house. Listening to "their music" will not be torture any longer.....

5 out of 5 stars Just TRY not to sing along!.......2003-09-27

We've only had this CD a few days, and have probably listened to it 100 times already. My 2.5 yr. old daughter has only seen the BITBBH Potty Time video and a few other episodes, so you don't have to be a regular viewer to love this music. The only song that I could do without is "Go to Bed, Sleepy Head", and not because it's not a good song (it is), but because Ojo is discussing how when she tries to go to sleep at night, these scary monsters keep coming in her room making scary noises. Of course, the rest of the song is Bear reassuring her that everything is OK., etc. But it seems to have planted a seed in my daughter's head that there could be scary monsters in her room! Yikes! We hadn't quite gotten to that stage of development yet, but it was sure to come at some point. So for now, I try to skip it if I can. Having said all that, I still give it 5 stars; it's that good! The rest of the CD is a a nice mix of different styles of music, including a rap tune (Otter Love) that at first seemed a little out of place, but it grows on you. The best are "That's My Name" and "Oops! I Goofed Again", but really they're all great!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME Kid's CD!.......2003-09-08

Our family LOVES this disc. We ALL sing along with it! Definitely be warned, lol, it will take you by surprise!! Have fun - this is WELL worth your money!!

5 out of 5 stars He got my son singing!!!..........2003-03-16

This is a great cd!!! Out of all the children's characters there are today, this is the absolute best. I'm bilingual Canadian. Out of both English and French, it's the best.. The songs are clear and understandable for the young kids.. My son always loved music, but this one rocks... For the first time I got to see him not only dance to music he loved but sing to it too... his favorite is the goodbye song...To see the excitement in his eyes that he was saying all the right words at the same time as Bear was precious...I recommend this to any parent with young children... toddlers to be exact.

5 out of 5 stars Darn! It grew on me........2002-12-12

I don't know what posessed me to buy this for my daughter. But after 12,000,000 playings of it, I can't get the songs out of my head.

The final 6 or 7 tunes are especially good. Now I can't stop humming them. It's awful!

Be warned.

4 out of 5 stars Best Comprehensive Survey of Canadian Music Available.......1999-01-19

This anthology of three Centuries(!) of Canadian music was assembled by a former producer from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation who now works for Naxos Canada. This producer is also active in the Canadian music world, so he knows whereof he speaks (or selects, as in this case). Liscensing the best performances available from major Canadian and International labels, this is the best collection of, and introudction to, the entire Canadian music scene that I have ever come across. The booklet is informative and is as enjoyable a read as is the 2 CD set is to listen. I doubt there will ever be anything quite like it again. If only NAXOS would now start recording Canadian music on top of the Canadian artists they already record, than they will truly have one of the finest and most comprehensive classical catalogues in the world. As for now, don't pass this one up.

5 out of 5 stars Creative Genius.......2004-09-24

The folks that write the music for this wonderful show should win a Grammy. They are able to come up with an amazing song for so many different genres of music... from 60s lounge to songs formulated to sound like Barry White or the Beastie Boys. My favorite by far on this album is "Rhythm in the Air," which is a throwback to swing. So freakin' good! And my son, who is two, just goes nuts when we play it. These people are so creative! It makes me want to do something creative too!

5 out of 5 stars Age is not a factor, it's well written tunes and catchy!.......2004-02-10

This is one of my favorite CDs, as well as something to share with the kids. It is not uncommon to have it played loadly from my Jeep's sterio, while we drive around town and the whole family sings along to tunes like "Picture This". (I'm 33 years old, by the way). I stopped in at Amazon.com to check on prices for replacing our now aging and worn copy.

Don't get me wrong, we're not insane or anything, we listen to other stuff too, like the Ramones, Sarah MacLachlan and the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" sountrack, but our "Bear in the Big Blue House" CD tends to get the majority of play time in the car, and of the two BitBBH CD's, "More Songs..." has more of our faves than the first CD.

5 out of 5 stars OHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHH!!!!.......2004-01-28

Hey yous guys! I bought this cd for my kids but when I listened to it, I kept it for myself!! It really pumps me up and gets me ready to go. It also is a good cd to put you in the mood (if you know what I mean) It arouses my wife as well! ;) I LOVE LISTENING TO THIS CD! Sometimes, I skip work just to listen to this and sing along with Bear! I've never felt so alive. The track "What's In the Mail Today?" is my favorite!

5 out of 5 stars An older fan.......2003-06-11

o.O; Who says you have to be 3 or listen to this on your way to daycare? This may sound creepy to you, but I'm 14 and I lurve these songs! It just proves that no matter how old you are, you could still enjoy Bear's beautiful voice. ^^ Whether you're 1 or 81, you should check out this CD. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music for Kids - Bear Fans or not.......2003-04-15

I checked this CD out from the library on the recommendation of a friend. My kids (3-1/2 and 2)have never even watched "Bear in the Big Blue House", but they love this CD! We had it out from the library as long as we could, and then luckily found the original "Bear" CD and checked it out - it's just as good. I'm on www.Amazon.com right now to buy both of them. The songs have great arrangements and are really pretty catchy and even enjoyable for adults to listen to. They will stick in your head constantly, as do most children's songs, so be warned! I've been laying in bed in the middle of the night many a time with these songs going over and over in my mind - but it's worth it. We sing "What's in the Mail Today?" every day on our way to get the mail, "Everybody in the Tub" every night at bath time . . . and they especially love "Your Grandma and Grandpa" and "Shadow's Lullaby". They perk up and start dancing wildly whenever they hear the first few notes of the first song and realize we get to listen to "Bear". Strongly recommend this CD to any family with young children who love music.

5 out of 5 stars A genius worthy of Weill...finally..........2002-04-14

Allfolter approaches Weill with the same no-nonsense, visceral and unsentimental clarity that is required of an artist creating Loge in Twilight of the Gods, along with the enigmatic sensitivy of the Act III Tristan.

Throw in the gift of being able to belt one out with the best of them and it works. It works Big Time. This man is a genius. Not even Lenya delivers the Bilbao Song so well -- and I felt, in 2002, that I was hearing September Song for the first time. There isn't one clunker on the whole c/d.

Magnificent. Who is this man? where has he been all our lives?
