This 1987 collection of Smiths album tracks, B-sides, and singles (and roughly half of Hatful of Hollow) is a worthy essential Smiths due to its scope and size. Twenty-four tracks in all, it includes hits such as the irresistible and bouncy "Ask," the Smiths prototype "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now," "William, It Was Really Nothing," "Panic," and "Hand in Glove." Lesser-known tracks like the lovely, piano-driven instrumental "Oscillate Wildly," the dark "Rubber Ring," and the weary "Half a Person" are strong enough to stand without the benefit of support from the hits. There are a few misses here, but they're hardly noticeable when surrounded by all the great tracks. Plus, a number of must-haves ("You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby," "Stretch Out and Wait," "Half a Person") are virtually unavailable elsewhere. --Lorry Fleming

Looking at the list of songs on this album, I am overwhelmed at their brilliance. I don't know how they did it, but Morrissey and Marr had some connection that allowed them to create some of the most magnificent songs ever written. The Smiths are comparable to U2 in talent and song-writing ability, they just were never quite as popular because they never sold out to the mainstream. Although Morrissey can be a bit pompous at times, he has always stayed true to his art. I dont need to tell you that this album is worth buying because every review gives it 5 stars.

No ones 80's record collection is really complete unless it contains a Smiths album,and if you are still a little unsure then this compilation is a really great place to start,before trying their proper albums
(in particular "The Queen is Dead" & "Strangeways Here We Come".)
With Morrissey's poetic lyrics and Johnney Marr's great guitar playing,
your in for a treat whenever you listen to a Smiths song.
And if your still hungry for more after those albums check out Morrissey's solo stuff like "Bona Drag" and "Your Arsenal".
All those people who dismiss the lyrics as "Whiny" really haven't LISTENED to them nor understood the amusing and witty remarks that lie within them.

Most of us have been there, thanks Morrissey.

5 out of 5 stars You just can't go wrong with bombs........2007-01-20

This is by far the best Smiths collection you can get. Not only is it the biggest(24 tracks) but it's also a great glimpse into The Smiths back catalog of b-sides. Some of the tracks I could of done without (Unloveable, Golden lights) and had them replaced with some classic tracks (That Joke isn't funny anymore, barbarism begins at home)but it's a great collection none the less. One of the jems on Bombs is the collection exculsive "Asleep" which is one of the most beautiful and tear jerking songs The Smiths ever wrote, and as we all know they wrote alot of them. So yes. Pick this up if you're tired of your Best of Vol 1 and 2 and want to listen to the real meat of The Smiths. you won't be disapointed

5 out of 5 stars How do you describe the perfect album........2006-10-16

It sounds cheesy, doesn't it, stating LTB is the quintescential Smiths album. I remember listening to the Beatles over and OVER and OVER again and my mother telling me that they were the perfect band, that no one else would be able to take their place. I hated her for that. It felt like she had stolen something necessary for growing up. Can't describe the feeling, kind of a jealousy that festered.

So, in rebellion, I listened to Debbie Gibson and other pop sycophants and symbols of the time, finally deciding that George Micheal was as fine a point of where music of the 80s would have to leave its mark. My on-again, off-again girlfriend at the moment convinced me one fine, fall day to take a listen to the LTB tape she constantly carried in her back pocket. Three days later, she was shacking up with a greaser to whom I loathed, but who had a car, leaving me with my moody depression, piles of crisp golden and orange leaves and two more years of high school, and a well used Smiths Louder Than Bombs long playing tape.

Morrisey's amazing voice and lyrical talent, coupled with Johnny Marr's amazing guitar feeds, Andy Rourke's back beat and Mike Joyce keeping the rhthym really fit the mood I was in. Each song reminded me of different things; mostly Shakespearean, long train rides, James Dean, and cool, windy, rainy days in which one tends to curl up with a small book of Keats or Yeats and enjoys being alone. Each song seemed crafted, not produced. Very real and raw. Immensely wonderful.

Yeah, I know, three letters. G - A - Y. Still, I loved the Smiths then, and every band I listen to and love now, such as Deathcab for Cutie, Dandy Worhols, the Doves, Jets Overhead, Coldplay, all seem molded by this little band as well. The Smiths were never huge by the Beatle's standards, although Morrissey continues to have a cult following as does Johnny Marr. It's fall again, the cool air has the aroma of rain, and Dead Poets Society becomes my favorite movie again. The tape has long ago fallen to the ravages of play and time, but I have a well worn CD that I still cherish.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrics Speak Louder Than Bombs.......2006-10-10

"Louder Than Bombs" is a Smiths compilation of sorts, a collection of non-album singles, B-sides and several tracks from the Smiths' first compilation "Hatful of Hollow". Many of these tracks you can't get anywhere else. Well, you can get them on "The World Won't Listen", but that's a very similar compilation to this one.

It's a good value collection, and a fine introduction to the band, I think. There are 24 tracks, recorded between 1984-1987, of all different styles and moods. All have fantastic guitar playing by Johnny Marr, while Andy Rourke's bass and Mike Joyce's guitar keep things catchy too. Morrissey's lyrics though, are what makes this record, and the Smiths, really special, I think. He can be witty at times, he can be warm, he can be sympathetic and he can be despairing, often all in the same song. He comes up with some great little phrases in his songs. As for subject matters, he covers all sorts of things, just as Johnny Marr covers all sorts of moods. "Shoplifters of the World Unite" lends an ear to the commercially compulsive, "This Night Has Opened My Eyes" sees a mother abandon a child, "Girl Afraid" touches on the pushy girl/passive guy relationship, and "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby" (which I reckon really should have gone on to be a hit single) sums up the pain of struggling and striving, whether in attempts to find love or attempts to be famous. It's one of my favourites of the album and the band, as is "Rubber Ring", where Morrissey urges the listener not to "forget the songs that made you cry, and the ones that saved your life" and to spare a happy thought for him after such songs have helped you through tough times. If anyone else had been singing it, it might have come across as a bit arrogant, but the Smiths wrote some powerful songs, and Morrissey knew it! There's also an instrumental by Johnny Marr ("Oscillate Wildly") and a very strange, but typically Morrissey, cover song (Twinkle's "Golden Lights").

The booklet is fairly simple, but it comes with the lyrics to all the songs, which is very nice to have for a band like the Smiths.

Overall, a great introduction to the band, a great addition to Smiths/Morrissey collection, and a great bunch of songs. Recommended.

On their first full length, these Anglophile Texans jettison the overt Belle & Sebastian/ Aztec Camera influences of their justly-lauded early singles and EPs for a slightly harder and more diverse sound. The songs range from pretty, poignant, and piano-driven numbers like "Ghost" and "Steven" to more manic and guitar-heavy songs such as "Kid Gloves" and "Brothers in Conflict." There's an undeniable, infectious energy at work here which is put to great use with the self-deprecating humor and immense pop chops. It'd be ridiculous to say you've never heard music like this before, even if you're a newbie to British (or British-sounding) indie-pop from the last 25 years. When Ramesh Srivastava knowingly, passionately sings "I have to lose my idols to find my voice" on "Brothers," you have to agree that the kid's on the right track. Fantastic indie pop. Some of the songs are instantly catching (like Firecracker, which I played almost non-stop for a day), and all the others without exception get better and better. Thoroughly recommended.

This has the ability to go mainstream, but hopefully it won't. For their first full-length album (released on the same record label that brings us the outstanding 'The National') Voxtrot doesn't disappoint. Hailing from Austin, they bring simple beautiful melodies, vocals, and (some) piano. A sound that might be compared to the likes of Death Cab, if thats your bag.

These guys are amazing. I just picked this up based on a friend's recommendation and holy wow. By strategically avoiding all the pitfalls of what a first album can fall into, they do it masterfully. They also avoid the trends quite well, but delving into a very honed power pop rock sound that elevates your energy no matter what kind of mood you're in. However I get sad listening to it, because so much of the lyrics apply to situations going on in my life. But that's the reason I love it. It emotes me. It makes me feel the same thing. They're doing it with a meloncholy grace that in my opinion rivals the best Interpol song. They hail from Austin, Texas where if you don't know so many great and unique groups have come out of, here's a small list in case you're curious....

This is one of those albums that you will get through from start to finish and not skip a single track. It's unbelievably how perfected their sound is, that they've been working on it for a while and finally found where they belong on the soundscope. Get this if you enjoy Superdrag, Nada Surf or some of the best early nineties Brit Rock. Also I tend to never review anything that's less than five stars so if you read my reviews, you'll know this one's a winner.

Taking Back Sunday-Louder Now ***


Taking Back Sunday is a great band that knows how to write hit singles. Taking Back Sunday is not however a band that knows how to write great albums. They are very good lyricly, all of their songs have great lyrics there is no debating that, but musicaly that is where they lack. The drums and bass, and guitar are very basic. The vocals are great though and that is what the band focuses on.

The album starts out strong, very strong infact but after about half way through the album starts to lose the appeal it originaly had. 'Whats It Feel Like To Be A Ghost?' is a great song with a surprizingly good guitar riff, and really one of the better songs the band has made thus far, it wouldnt be surprizing to see the song climb the charts eventually. 'Liar' which is a hit song has some killer harmonies in the vocal department, and the lyrics are very much Taking Back Sunday. 'MakeDamnSure' was the lead single for the album and actually the best song the band ever recorded. Hands down one of the best pop rock songs ever. As far as the emo genre goes this is the genres 'Satisfaction.' 'Up Against (Blackout)' is another very catchy song that could just as easily be a hit single. 'My Blue Heaven' has great lyrics but is to be honest boring. 'Twenty-Twenty Surgery' is another catchy and great song, but this is the last good song on the album. The rest of the album is rather boring. A few moments try to shine through the clouds but never quite make it. This album could have been much, much better.

It is worth owning for the A side of it though because the first seven songs with the exception of one are very good. While it may not be as good as the bands first two albums it is still a solid effort, and the good songs here are really good and show promise for the things to come from Taking Back Sunday. If this is your kind of music go for it.

I've never listened to any other TBS except for a song called 'Cute Without the E' that my friend wanted me to listen to. I think that this album is great, though. It's kinda...in between rock and punk, and...I don't really know what else to say about it. I like it a lot.

We all know who Taking Back Sunday is right? You either hate them, or love them, but this album might turn heads.. in both directions. TBS helped create the whole emotional (or "emo") music movement with "Tell All Your Friends". Then things happened, the lineup changed, and then they released their second, and in my opinion the best, release "Where You Want to Be". Now TBS is leaving the "emo" bandwagon and exploring into new territory, Rock, while bringing their sound with them. I'd say it's a really good try, but they barely miss the mark. I'll first start by saying this is all personal opion and you can either take it or leave, so leave me alone.

This cd was very good but did have a few kinks in it. With Fred Mascherino(typo?) taking over the task of writing some of the lyrics, the lyrics have become, although still very good, less witty than before. A few songs have also fallen into the "repeat the song title and call it a chorus" syndrome, like "Twenty-Twenty Surgery", "Miami" and "Liar", although I do like "Miami". The whole rock sound fits very well on TBS and throughout the whole record, but it may turn off some of the older fans.

There was also a couple songs I couldn't get out of my head, like the fan-favorite "MakeDamnSure". They also included a re-recording of "Error:Operator" from the Fantastic Four Soundtrack and movie, which is also one of my favorite songs, along with "Spin". The album hits a calmer stage with songs like "My Blue Heaven" and "Divine Intervention", but still retains its appeal.

So overall, I would give this album 4 stars just because of the few songs that didnt stick and the whole feel of the album, which, even though did keep TBS's sound, lost most of it along the journey. What I'm saying is, this isn't really the same TBS from the other albums. Change is good, but it takes time to perfect it.

John Scofield is an organic mood these days. On Saudades, the recent release by Trio Beyond, the guitarist hooked up with Hammond B-3 man Larry Goldings (and drummer Jack DeJohnette) to pay tribute to Tony Williams' fusion-pioneering Lifetime. Here, in the role of guest artist, he revives his partnership with organist John Medeski--and bassist Billy Martin and drummer Chris Wood, all of whom backed him on his smartly grooving 1998 effort, A Go Go. As the crunching "Miles Beyond" demonstrates, MSMW has got fusion on its mind, too. But on what may be the futuristic Medeski crew's most aggressively varied effort, they also partake of spaced-out blues jams, Beatles balladry ("Julia"), full-throttle soul, rhythmically recast reggae (Peter Tosh's "Legalize It"), New Orleans tradition ("Tootie Ma is a Big Fine Thing") and a Brazilian-inflected tune on which Scofield makes like Wes Montgomery. The first album to be issued on MMW's own Indirecto label, Out Louder is a consistently enjoyable world tour that has just the edge and sense of surprise that has been missing on some of Scofield's and MMW's recent albums. --Lloyd Sachs

5 out of 5 stars Sco melds w/ the Boys.......2007-07-21

I really dig this release because first off, as has been mentioned, this is a quartet, not a star performer backed by a trio.

Having seen Sco live on two occasions this really surprised me a bit. He holds back a good bit and you don't hear too much soloing. He's playing the Marc Ribot card to a certain extent but is a little more atonal and not quite as bluesy as Marc's outtings with the band.

The winning track to me is Down The Tube. Scofield remarked that this was his favorite number also and for good reason. They set up and started jamming with the deck running and this is what you get. Fully improvised, porky distorted bass, steady funk play, odd trickets of atonal sound. It's the sickest funk I've ever heard.

As previously mentioned, this is a diverse outing. There is probably more variety on this disc than any other MM&W disc. Ninety percent is very accessible. Down The Tube would be the exception.

That's why I enjoy it.

This is really nice. I had grown somewhat tired of some of John Scofield's outings lately but this is a nice return to form with this quartet. The starier "Little water rides again" rocks nicely and the album ends by a surprising cover of Legalize It.

4 out of 5 stars That's Medeski, SCOFIELD, Martin, and Wood .......2007-02-14

I needed to fully digest this record before writing a review, so yesterday I put it on the stereo and listened to it for a few hours, back to back to back. What I came away with was a great collection of songs, albeit one masquerading as an album. But hey, with the sole exception of 1998's Combustication, that's what Medeski Martin and Wood almost exclusively produce these days.

Not that that's a bad thing, mind you. There are some superbly realized jams to be found here, not to mention r&b and straight blues that will require repeated listenings. And if that weren't enough, there is an ethereal and fragile rendition of the Beatles' Julia. Anyway, mix it all together and Bob's your uncle.

Or at least that's the theory.

There is, however, something about this recording that screams out to be highlighted. There is a measure of restraint that makes this album superior to anything Medeski, Martin, and Wood have done in the last nine years. Perhaps it is the presence of Scofield, but gone are the overblown performances of Uninvisible and The Dropper. What we are left with, rather, are scaled down recordings where interplay arrives subtly as opposed to occurring within an ever-increasing contest of volume and overflourish.

While this recording doesn't exceed the brilliance of Combustication (a pinnacle that may never be repeated), it is the next best thing, and one suspects the inclusion of Scofield in the group's name is a tip-off to that fact.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Good Album and a Very Good Combo!.......2007-01-27

The thing one will notice right off about this album is that this music does not sound like a trio + 1, but a self-sufficient quartet that has been playing together for years. And unlike MMW and Scofield's previous meeting on "A Go Go" this CD is not attributed to one artist with guests, but to Medeski, Scofield, Martin and Wood AS a quartet. And this is fitting because these guys should play together more often. This music makes all four shine.

First off, the compositions on this disc are great, especially if you are used to the fairly structureless jams that MMW has been doing as of late. The songs on this disc, unlike those on "Dropper" and "Uninvisible" have strong melodies and seem to musically go somewhere - at least, somewhere recognizable. Contrary to what some may have thought, direction and structure do not hamper MMW, but (at least, to me) makes them stronger.

Scofield's very noodly sounding guitar fits in perfectly with MMW's rough-around-the-edges sound and production (this album certainly has more bite than "A Go Go" in part because it is on MMW's own label).

A variety of styles and sounds are explored here. We have the Meters-esque "Little Walter," the bluesy "Untill the World Changes It's Mind," the latin tinged "Tequlla and Chocolate," and the unexpected ballad "Julia" (have you ever heard Billy Martin on brushes??). These songs really do not get old (as both MMW and Scofield can do from time to time). All the songs (save for two; attribute that to personal taste) are very listenable; just tame enough to be accessible, just edgy enough to be interesting.

This is a CD that I will be playing for some time to come. I really hope these four musiciains release more material together as I believe this to be a combo that brings out the best in eachother.

I'm an MMW fan who owns three of their previous albums and have seen them perform live. Although Out Louder is a pleasure to listen to, I was a bit disappointed. I always thought MMW could use a guitar in their line up to spice things up a bit, in fact I thoroughly enjoyed Scofield's "A Go Go". I guess I expected Out Louder to build on that album, but I think it fell short. I would have liked to hear more standout guitar work. If your a fan, it's worth adding to your collection, if you're not, check it out anyway. It's MMW after all.

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

Probably not a sentiment shared by many, and I won't go into an excrutiating critique, but in my mind this is their best album. Songs like "Hands All Over," "Ugly Truth," "Uncovered," "Loud Love," and "Heretic (which did not appear on the album)" represent the band at their finest. Don't get me wrong, their subsequent albums were superb as well (even the relatively benign "Down On The Upside..."), but Chris' air raid siren vocals, Hiro's foundation crushing bass, and Kim's wailing guitar placed this as one of the best metal albums of all time.

ok so I know that sounds harsh for a review title, but it was their first album and heavily influenced by their Seattle band mates Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains. They really evolved over the course of their career. if you are accustomed to the sound of Super Unknown then buy Bad Motor Finger and Down on the Upside. However if you like this album buy Ultramega ok.

This album changed my life. I hated most all heavy music that came out after _Master of Puppets_ . . . until this. And then it was grunge grunge grunge. I thought the grunge thing was a clever way for marketers to call Soundgarden something other than metal, as this stuff is about as metal as you could ever get. Lots of hair, bludgeoning riffs, high high screamy voice, guitar shredding: everything except the hairspray, spandex, and songs about scoring chicks (notable exception: "Big Dumb Sex," the perfect parody of the hair scene--"Know what to do,/ I'm gonna f**k, f**k, f**k, f**k you). Not to say it doesn't do things that metal had never done, 'coz it does, assuring it its rightful place in the metal pantheon.

First off, Chris Cornell's lyrics are not your typical hormonal metal chants. Some of these are diatribes. "Hands All Over" rains down hard on globalization, using abstraction to get his point across in an intellectual way: "Hands all over the coastal waters./ The crewmen thank her,/ then lay down their oily blanket." Light years beyond AC/DC. The immediate parallel is of course Zeppelin. And of course Soundgarden owes them a huge debt (what rock band after them doesn't?). What I find differentiates Soundgarden from Zep more than anything is Thayil's guitar. Listen close and at times his guitar sounds positively Farsi or raga, not always in the controlled way you hear white bands play when they are trying to be "world," but in a way that sounds like him taking his Iranian upbringing and putting it through a filter of rage. I also love his use of harmonics. Few guitarists are as good at making the instrument sound as scary as an exorcism. And of course, he shreds with the best of them, taking the excursions into more post-tonal territory than his harmony-obsessed counterparts doing their time in bands like Poison and Winger. You don't have to think hard to know that he is one of my favorite rock guitarists ever.

_Louder than Love_ stands alongside of their albums near the pinnacle. It's a different beast than any of their others, a transition from the more loose (and also excellent) _Ultramega OK_ to the tighter _Badmotorfinger_. I like the tension and the dynamics on this one. It's the more hippy Soundgarden. I sometimes wonder if I like this a little more than their later stuff because Hiro Yamamoto is still on the bass here. I just wonder if he brought a slightly more sludgy feel to the band than Ben Shepherd, nonetheless a fine rock bassist. Whatever it is, _Louder Than Love_ will be remembered as a monument to the late eighties, the molten metal that singed the life out of the plastic metal out there and really put the bad stuff out of commission for good, never to dominate the charts again. It's a monument that says, "metal shouldn't be commercial, it should scream 'can't escape the louder pull--LOUD LOVE! LOUD LOVE! LOU-OUD LO-OO-A-OV," magmatic riffs and feedback careening with hyperkinetic drums all the while.

Formula: Led Zeppelin+Black Sabbath+Seattle: Soundgarden. It's very strange the fact that Soundgarden is a band from Seattle... grunge... musically they are very superior than their fellas from there. I've always thought that they were more metal than anything else. Guitar melodies really get your attention, as Cornell's voice, that looks like "a very angry 90's Robert Plant". 'No Wrong No Right' has an incredible beginning with its drums n' guitar attack! The devastation keeps on with Cornel's screaming! Afterwards, the bass lines are less aggressive, but fit exactly with the melody sequence. Sensational! The lyrics of the album are most of time very interesting. Provocative as enigmatic ones, they represent for me a lot of puzzling. Well, maybe it's only a comprehension problem for an uneducated poor brazilian thing like me. I burst in laughs with track #6 lyrics 'Full on Kevin's Mom'. I think that little crap one of the few bad things in this album. It's a dangerous hardcore with idiot words... if it was instrumental, it would be wonderful! I couldn't really understand the message here, if you did, please, tell me: [...]. The other thing I didn't like was production. The sound is not very clear, the recording seems to be a little precarious. Conclusion : that's a cool album, but if you are new to Soundgarden, you'd rather get Badmotorfinger first.

Rent is usually treated as Jonathan Larson's one and only show, but the truth is that he had a career--albeit a hitless one--before that blockbuster. There was a musical titled JP Morgan Saves the Nation with lyrics by Jeffrey M. Jones and music by Larson. And there was Tick, Tick... Boom!, an autobiographical piece that Larson workshopped for a while before setting it aside and finishing Rent.

In 2001, Tick, Tick is getting a full off-Broadway production, and it's a rather endearing one. Lyrics have never been Larson's strong point, but he was a hell of a melodic composer--and the score here is even poppier than that of Rent (think Top 40 rather than Sondheim). It's hard to pick favorite songs: "Green Green Dress" is built on a rollicking piano boogie, for instance, and "Real Life" and "See Her Smile" are the kind of elegiac ballad that Larson would later perfect with "Seasons of Love." Luckily, this show has a lot more to offer than mere youthful musings. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Perhaps it's a coincidence that the immensely talented Raúl Esparza plays a character dreading his 30th birthday in this 2001 recording of the hit off-Broadway show by the late Jonathan Larson, while five years later, he would play the elliptical Bobby dreading his 35th birthday in the enthralling 2006 Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Company. In both performances, Esparza shows a true affinity for capturing the angst of men undergoing transitional points in their lives which render them emotionally paralyzed. At first glance, Sondheim and Larson would not seem like kindred spirits, but both share a gift for sophisticated lyrics in an unmistakable musical style defined by their oeuvres. Larson even pays tribute to Sondheim in the story's climax and with the sardonic, work-is-hell "Sunday", a take-off of the song with the same name in Sunday in the Park with George.

However, it is the familiar Larson sound of Rent that is heard most in this score - driving, rock-out rhythms with unavoidable pop hooks and yearning, piano-driven ballads. Even the opener, "30/90", is a virtual sound-alike of the bigger show's title tune. If the songs are not quite as polished or even memorable as those in Rent, they feel more personal because the autobiographical story is far more intimate in scale. Set in 1990 in the same SoHo neighborhood as Rent, it's a simple three-character piece about Jon, an aspiring composer who considers giving up his dreams on the verge of his 30th birthday. With charismatic fire, Esparza is equally adept using his beautifully expressive voice in a rock milieu as in a Sondheim character study. He brings energetic brio to finger-snapping rockers like the Twinkie-induced "Sugar" and especially shines on the ballads, "See Her Smile" and the revelatory "Why".

With a slightly pinched voice that reminds me a bit of the Bangles' Susanna Hoffs, Amy Spanger as girlfriend Susan duets nicely with Esparza on the touching "Johnny Can't Decide", the rocking "Green Green Dress", and the comical self-help wordplay of "Therapy". Her shining solo moment comes with the knockout ballad, "Come to Your Senses". As Jon's embattled pal Michael, Jerry Dixon provides powerful vocals, bringing particular warmth to "Real Life" and grit to the fed-up rave "No More". The trio closes the show powerfully with the anthem-like "Louder Than Words". The overall score is a bit derivative and a tad too earnest, but the youthful zest of the cast and Larson's pop craftsmanship more than compensate. Two bonus tracks are offered at the end - an instrumental replay of the opener, "30/90 Playout" and a rare recording of Larson singing "Boho Days" a capella with propulsive hand claps.

If you are a fan of the late great Mr. Larson you will love this music. Okay, I have seen the play a couple of times so I know what happens between the songs but this, his autobiography, really moved me. Even my kids like the Green Dress Song.

I hope you like it... The theme is "Actions Speak Louder Than Words" rings true today as the day he wrote it.

I saw this play a few weeks ago, and really enjoyed the music, so I got the CD. The voices, and lyrics are amazing! However, as I often find with CDs of musicals, there wasn't always the right feeling in the voice, particularly in "Therapy" where couple ought to be angry at each other, and it seems more cute on the CD.

I love Tick, Tick... Boom! The show is quite refreshing. The show works so well with three actors. I LOVE "30/90" and "Louder Than Words." Both speak really strongly to the audience because they both are really relatable to anyone's life. Admittedly the middle of the show drags a little, and Spangler's voice can be chipmunkish at times. However those are minor detractions when it comes to this show. It is especially moving if you know Jonathan's story. It is no Rent, but the short piece is really moving

I was soo soo very pleased with the music from "Tick...Tick..BOOM!". Rock Operas are my favorite type of musical theatre, and i must say this is one of the best. The storyline, however, although dealing with bohemian problems like AIDS, rehersals, love, didnt meet the power of the music. It was taken from Johnathans original one-man show and made into a three-man show. This was the only way possible to make this conversion, but still it was a dull storyline only going over the time period of one day in the day in the life of Johnathan Larson. Yes, it was an important day, his thirtieth birthday and his friend annoucing that he is HIV positive, but none of this happens until the end. The show lacks obsession, and in order to make a good musical storyline there has to be an obsession. Luckily, the weak storyline is backed with fantastic music, perhaps even better than Rent. 30/90 is my all time favorite song EVER i have listened to it over and over and still am not sick of it. other favorite tracks include:

This DVD has some awesome footage of shows including random stuff that happens on stage which can be hilarious. It also introduces the band and how they act with each other on tour which is cool. I already had the album but this was still worth the money for any TBS fan.

Serena-Maneesh is a name you may already know. Their eponymous debut reached #29 in Pitchfork's top 50 albums of last year. They toured Europe with big fans, The Dandy Warhols, then received a rock category nomination for a Norwegian Grammy and a worldwide record deal with Play Louder Recordings (a division of Beggars Group). The group's sound is like something out of your dreams. Chaotic noise swelling with dreamlike, ethereal vocals and distorted samples. I buy a lot of music, but this stands out as one of the best albums I've come across in the last few years. Noisy yet melodic, chaotic yet controlled, this album is a blissful sonic universe. I absolutely love it. It's almost like a reincarnation of My Bloody Valentine, if Kevin Shields had more budget and more technology. Just awesome.

Serena Maneesh plays a kind of noisy experimental indie-rock that is a natural continuation of early Sonic Youth, but simply much better recorded. The songs are usually slow and long with prolonged outdrawn introductions. It also reminds of Loveless-era My Bloody Valentine because of the stoned female vocals. The songs also have an ethereal quality to them that is quite unique. It is extremely derivative so anybody liking the previously cited groups will really enjoy this. It does however lack that little something that made these bands produce great stuff. There are also a few songs that are not that great. While I would not be as negative as the other reviewer I must agreee that it lacks greatness. Sorry, guys, I really wanted to like this. Actually Giant drag who are also very derivative along the same lines have managed to pull off something better even if they have opted for a more melodic approach than this Norwegian group has and people would be better advised to buy their CD.
