With various Palace incarnations, Oldham has obsessed over lower than lo-fi quasi-country music, and his first full length solo album, continues with his raging sonic sermons of apocalypse, despair, evil, and sex. my favorite oldham album.......2006-03-23
but not my favorite palace album. That would be There is No One. Anyway, I just spent too much time checking out the reviews for James Blunt, and was befuddled at how many people passionately love him, when he obviously isn't that good. I really think what's going on there is that people want him to be deep and a genius so they make him one-so they get to listen to "deep" music without having to be challenged in any way. I know music is personal, but Blunt is tripe. But here, with Mr. Oldham, I could understand how opinions could defer so widely. His music is difficult, and therefore when you like it, it is really a personal, intimate thing. I love this album, and maybe even if you don't you could understand how someone could, unlike Mr. Blunt's pablum.

Maybe this is one of those albums that gets better over time after you have listened to it for a few times. I've tried, I've really tried.
I am a big Palace fan since I first heard "New Partner" on the radio and have collected a lot of Oldham's music since. This is my least favorite album. None of the songs stick, the melody's are not outspoken and the lyrics are not the best he has ever done. Of course there are some songs that are not bad like 'Bolden Boke Boy' but the overal tone of the album is just not that good.
However, having read the other reviews, I'll try to listen to it a little more and maybe I will change my mind, in that case you will hear from me with a new revies.

At first, it may seem dingy, purposefully clumsy, lame. Occasionally rocking, but nothing special. Then the iris opens, and its perfection is revealed. I have long claimed to not be so crazy about Will Oldham -- "I like more rockin stuff, less affected stuff" -- but the truth is, I rarely listen to this album just once through anymore -- I am ALWAYS hitting play once it's over. You have to give it time, though. Bravo, gentlemen! Robert Arellano who plays guitar on this just published a novel with Akashic books. And David Pajo... oh, Pajo!
Utterly inspired.......2003-09-02
"Joya" and "I See A Darkness" are utter masterpieces. If you like one then buy the other immediately. The rest of the Oldham oeuvre is worth having too, but these two are the pinnacle.

this album is brilliant, will oldham is a genious..one of my favorites, together with I see a darkness. I reccomend this album to anyone who is a fan of relaxing and beautiful music.

If i'm not mistaking she was a Jersey native. I like this CD she had a pretty strong voice.

I first heard this back in 95. Not a bad cd. Too bad I never heard any thing more from this artist. Her voice is pleasant and somewhat Faith-ish.

All of the greatness and beauty of Vaughan Williams' music fused with the epic from John Bunyan and the great narration and voices, including Sir John Geilgud, make this one of the best of all the sacred music from Vaughan Williams. An incredible musical journey on this disc moving forward to an emotional climax as Christian reaches Mount Zion. It is highly recommended.

The cd is wonderful to share with your little ones. Joya is a blessing to bring this to us. Her passion and love for the children shows. These songs are easy to sing with your children. Play drums, rattles, dance, and go around in a big circle being different animals during Kee Lay Lay. And, the babes love Noble Duke as you take the babe on you knees up and down and then upside down. They will ask for more, more, again, again. Your eyes will tear singing "How Could Anyone?" The "Collage" is made up of toddlers singing and laughing, your toddlers eyes will light up with joy. You will not regret adding this collection of beautiful songs that bring love, peace, joy, and all us together as one to your collection. And, if you're in Santa Cruz, don't leave without going to Mothersong live in person.

There is this common misconception that the middle ages should be known as the dark ages for culture, arts, music and literature. This is simply not true and this album in question Amor de Lonh: The Distant Love of the Troubadours~ Anonymous clearly demonstrates that the middle ages clearly also was a time for amazing music , vocal skills and refinement that can match anything produced during other ages such as Baroque and any other era for that matter. Yes it does sound quite different then what we are used to but the skill of the musicians, vocalists and lyricists leave no doubt that this was indeed also an age filled with splendid ability in the art of composition, performance, and an age filled with refinement and culture.
