Electric Version

Editorial Reviews

The New Pornographers' debut album was the stuff of legend, a near-perfect collection of catchy songs filled with lush sonics, anthemic sing-alongs, and retro pop hooks. Seemingly out of nowhere, the band--featuring Zumpano's Carl Newman, Destroyer's Dan Bejar, and alt-country goddess Neko Case--forged a power pop masterpiece. Electric Version is, thankfully, not all that different. For its 45 minutes, the album never eases up on its great influences; you're treated to a baker's dozen of memorable tunes that harken to prog-rock, New Wave, and the British Invasion. The lyrics are goofy, the production fills your stereo (like the best, most upbeat tracks by Wilco or the Flaming Lips), and the alternating vocalists keep things fresh. The songs only get better as the album progresses; "Chump Change," "Ballad of a Comeback Kid,"and "July Jones" are three that standout. Somehow this indie supergroup is making classic rock ... today. --Jason Verlinde --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

This album is simply non-stop fun. I can't stop listening. It's catchy goodness will surely rope you in.

5 out of 5 stars A great album by an enormously talented band.......2006-02-20

The second album by the greatest band ever to hail from Vancouver is another winner. I have no idea why they aren't among the biggest names in music. They are well known, but they should be huge. Every song on the disc just ripples with talent and musical intelligence. This is without question some of the most energetic, brilliant, and passionate music in indie rock.

All of the members of the band are involved in other musical projects or have solo careers of their own (co-lead vocalist Neko Case, for instance, here in Chicago, where she has moved). Perhaps because of that or perhaps because they refuse to release anything that isn't utterly outstanding, they have managed to release only three albums in their eight years of existence. But though their releases are few, they make up for it by being close to perfect. There truly is not a bad cut on this album. Even the weakest cuts have numerous interesting moments, while the strongest cuts are so great they can send bolts of joy through your system. When you hear a song like "The Laws Have Changed" you can easily convince yourself that you haven't heard many better songs in your life. And then when you hear "It's Only Divine Right" you know it can't be true since it is at least as good.

This is a tight, tight band and every song bristles with wonderful musical touches. Because all the members are such seasoned professionals, they obviously know how to add just the right touch to properly embellish a song without weighing it down. And everyone in the band is so outstanding at what they do it is hard to single a single member out for praise. Nonetheless, I have to hand out kudos to two members. Carl Newman, more or less the leader of the band, has on all their albums managed to generate a fabulous set of songs. However, I wish he would give up singing lead on so many songs. Why? Because Neko Case is just a stunning vocalist. Every time she takes over the lead vocals I get a bit of a charge running down my spine. She has a marvelously nonchalant nasal voice and just seems to toss the lyrics almost without effort, as opposed to Newman, who while competent always seems to be working. Perhaps it is Case's non-Vancouver residence that keeps her from assuming more of the vocals, but if she were to do all the singing, this band would be almost impossibly great.

The great news for anyone who loves this album is that the band has two other albums that are at least as good as this one, perhaps even better. All three are must-own albums. So if you don't know these guys, go out immediately and get familiar with them. They are easily one of the best bands in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Electric Version.......2006-01-20

This album was released three years after the New Pornographers awesome debut album. This album is similar, but has a more glossy feel than the previous album. The album is definately more polished. Great synths and percussion throughout the album. Electric Version is an enjoyable and easy listen, chock-full of hungry hooks and brimming with indie rock's classic humility.

5 out of 5 stars Who was I fooling?.......2006-01-13

I honestly thought at first that this album wasn't nearly as good as Mass Romantic, but I don't know what I was thinking. Once again, those chill inducing pop hooks rocket their ways up and down my spine. I don't think anybody else can do it to me like The New Pornographers do. Carl Newman makes writing a perfect pop song seem easy. Listening to The Laws Have Changed is like injecting pure bliss right into your brain. Wow!

5 out of 5 stars "Electric Version".......2005-09-23

Incredible album... kind of like The Shins, but in a shiny radio rather than a broken down, old one with only one knob. Not that I don't love The Shins mind you, but this album is different. BUY IT!!! Tracks 2-5 are all perfect and the rest is REAL GOOD!

George Antheil's reputation as the Bad Boy of Music (the title of his fascinating autobiography) was earned largely with his Ballet Mécanique, written to accompany an abstract silent film by the artist Fernand Leger. It was composed for player pianos and percussion, with harsh, driving rhythms, and it caused the kind of riots in Paris that were useful to a composer's reputation. Today, that reputation may keep Antheil from being taken seriously. But when you hear the Ballet (as rescored in 1953 for an early mono recording) today, it's a substantial and exciting piece of music, formally tight and not at all hard on 21st century ears. The remainder of this program shows more of Antheil's range. The Serenade is a lovely piece of Americana, with a particularly touching slow movement. The Symphony and Concert owe much to Stravinsky's "neoclassical" style; both hold up very well. Spalding drives the Ballet hard, and it sounds more frenetic than that old mono recording, but the music can take the heat. This and the remaining performances are splendidly played by the excellent chamber orchestra, and the recording is clear, well-balanced, and realistic in sound. Another Naxos winner. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Bad Boy and the Bad Boy Tamed.......2001-11-30

The main problem with the early works of George Antheil, self-styled "Bad Boy of Music," is also its chief virtue: It's derivative of Igor Stravinsky. But then if you're going to slavishly follow a model, you probably couldn't choose a better one. In the Ballet Mechanique, Antheil's most famous work, you'll hear the percussion effects of "The Rite of Spring," "L'histoire," and especially "Les Noces." But you'll also note that the contours of the melodic snippets played by the tuneable percussion are Stravinskian as well, sounding like the Russian folk melodies that give "Les Noces" such impetus.

To be fair to Antheil, his music has its own merits, for one thing being entirely trusted to the percussion and an eccentic mix of instruments at that, including airplane propellers and electric bells among the more standard piano, drums, glockenspiel, xylophones, and such. It does create a uniquely extravagant and arresting sound. And then the music's multirhythms and off-rhythms give it the enlivening thrust that so many of this century's percussion extravaganzas lack. Overall, an interesting and appealing piece.

The "Symphony for Five Instruments" and "Concert Music for Chamber Orchestra" recall the neoclassical Stravinsky of the "Octet" and "Symphonies for Wind Instruments," but the quirky instrumentation of Antheil's symphony, with the prominence given to the sometimes clownish antics of the trumpet, abetted by the trombone, recall (or anticipate) Poulenc as well. Playful and enjoyable stuff despite its obvious hommage to Stravinsky. The "Concert" is more sullen and sober-sided and so is a bit more facelessly neoclassical.

Perhaps my favorite work here is the relatively late (1948) "Serenade for Strings No. 1," a gentle, very American piece with a skittish, syncopated first movement that has elements of the barn dance along with what seems like Latin dance rhythms. The tender, deeply felt slow movement is the high point of the work. The agreeably tipsy last movement returns us to the dance. This piece shows that Antheil never lost his Stravinskian belief that, as the Russian master said, "Rhythm is all."

The performances by the Philadelphia Virtuosi are indeed virtuosic but also highly sympathetic and even loving in the serenade. The recording, made in the War Memorial building of Antheil's native Trenton, New Jersey, is wonderfully vibrant and detailed. In all, a fine tribute to this mostly forgotten composer that should garner renewed interest in his music.

4 out of 5 stars New Anthiel Recording Hits Budget Market.......2001-10-23

Most readers will question the validity of introducing the works of such a little-known composer to the shelf, but this CD shows that even historical underdogs deserve their moment in the sun. The Philadelphia Virtuosi bring vibrancy and energy to Antheil's vivid soundscapes, which are amoung the most progressive works of the 1920's. To put Antheil's contributions into relief, the Ballet Mechanique on the present recording was first performed in 1926, predating the other famous avant-garde work for percussion ensemble of the era, Edgard Varese's Ionasation, of 1931-33. Of additional note on the record is the exemplary solo playing of the participants in Antheil's quirky quintet, the Symphony for Five Instruments of 1923. However, for those interested in the profound pinnacles of early 20th Century music, this disc may fall short of such inflated expectations. The music on this disc is primarily intended to divert and to delight. Influences of the Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat and of the early works of the so-called "Les Six" group conjure a reasonable example of what Antheil's witty scores have to offer. The program notes by Joshua Cheek unfortunately leave much to the imagination of the listener. For instance, the respective ensembles of the Symphony and the Concert are not enumerated, leaving the listener guessing as to the timbres he is hearing. Otherwise, congratulations to the Philadelphia Virtuosi and to Naxos for an interesting, welcome program with fine playing, polished sound and an alluring price tag.

It is a pleasure to listen to the high quality songs (solo and harmony) of Zucchero with world famous artists like Sting, Mouse, Pavarotti, etc.
Drive in your car for hours and hours listening to this CD and you never want to stop.

I can't stop listening to it or thinking about it. Great variety of music on one CD. Wonderful collaborations with various artists. Zucchero is awesome!

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate album "passion".......2005-02-21

Probably one of the best album's I've bought yet. I have never heard a multi artist album collection of this caliber from start to end. (Hey Man / B.B. King / zucchero) how long I have been waiting to get this on CD. I first heard it sometime back on a Pavarotti DVD. Very surprised to hear Marcy Grey bring on with the big name's good on her. Every song on this album goes deep and finds the roots of life. You want to cut yourself away from the rest of the world then listen to this on surround sound and be at piece with your self. To end off, if you ever want to make a unforgettable impression on your partner have a candle light dinner and whip this CD on. Say no more.

5 out of 5 stars Diverse...........2005-01-24

I first heard this CD in a restaurant and the voice whom caught my attention was Macy, girl! I asked the restaurant owner about the music, he happily obliged. I love the diverse mix of music. Each song captures each respected musician/artist in his/her own element. I enjoy the lyrics, however, the raw sound of each instrument puts me in a trance and offers a deeper appreciation for culturally diverse music. My favorites are with Miles Davis, Macy (of course) Sheryl Crow, Deloris O'Riordan and Cheb Mami. I had to buy a second copy, I wore it out.....Oh yeah, I am also diverse in my bloodline, no bias here.

Amazon.com essential recording

In the afterglow of his 60th birthday in 1997, Nonesuch Records delivered Steve Reich and his listeners an immense gift, this 10-CD retrospective of his work for the label, extending from his earliest tape-manipulation pieces to his most recent compositions utilizing samplers and the video artistry of Beryl Korot. Aside from the ear's liquid sense-making when it hears the dense and limber marimbas of Reich's Six Marimbas or his taut, dizzying Piano Phase, there is a physical response almost inevitable in Reich's music. It stuns and holds you. And he knows it. It's Gonna Rain struck an early chord of inventiveness, featuring an African American Pentecostal preacher's sermon and eventually spinning the title phrase into a jangling repetition of single words. Percussion works abound here: Clapping and Drumming stun with their deceptive similarity and warm clarity. Perennial favorite Piano Phase features pianists Nurit Tilles and Eduard Neumann synched up on two pianos and careening at full tilt in unison before their four hands fall out of time and phrase with each other, only to realign in a powerful swooping demonstration of energy and focus. The latter CDs hold abundant delights, many revealing Reich's late-discovered spiritualism and Judaica: Different Trains' examination of the Holocaust; Tehillim's shimmering Hebrew texts sung with fascinating choral power; Proverb's invocation of Perotin. Closing the set are recent pieces: Nagoya Marimbas, and the sampler-rich City Life and The Cave. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Classic, but not the definitive..........2004-05-20

While a multi CD collection spanning 30 years does sound very promsing, Nonesuch cannot offer all of the best recordings of some of Reich's masterpieces (Music for 18 Musicians or Drumming), and some have been missed out completely (Music for a Large Ensemble), presumably because the piece was not recorded under the Nonesuch label. While the collection is formidable, a listener wanting to hear the best recordings of all the pieces might do better seeking out the older (or longer!) recordings of the pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Essential.......1999-02-24

The term "essential" gets thrown about too much. And heck, the claim that certain words get thrown about too much gets thrown about too much. But here is a collection that really *is* essential to understanding the nature of a whole shift not just in classical music, but in popular music and indeed in popular culture. So many of Reich's ideas and concepts have become so deeply embedded in current classical music, film scoring (any number of examples, but think about Tangerine Dream's score for "Risky Business" and Hans Zimmer's score for "Thin Red Line," for starters), electronic music and even the visual arts.

This box set gives the listener all of Reich's major works. I can't even attempt to describe them individually, but every one of these 10 CDs is compelling. For the totally uninitiated, take out "Music for 18 Musicians" (presented here in a crystalline new recording) to get an idea of what the core of this guy is all about. From there, you might want to listen to "Different Trains," "Electric Counterpoint" and "Six Marimbas" to get an idea of the pointillistic pulse minimalism that Reich contributed to the world. The earlier material is the more challenging, exploring the subtleties of rythym, phase relationships between sounds and shifting timings. Among these, the new recording of "Four Organs" is just outstanding.

Reich's works, along with the early works of Terry Riley and Philip Glass, form the foundation of an enormous edifice that has grown of music that attempts to return to its essential and hypnotic roots. With this box set, one of those pylons becomes clear.

4 out of 5 stars Ballet Mechanique - sounds of the Machine Age.......1999-12-04

When not hanging out in Paris with Stravinsky, Joyce, and other 20's hipsters, Lowell, Mass native George Antheil contemplated his love for the sound machines.

He spent an entire year writing a piece that couldn't be played... until recently.

Ballet Mechanique was written for something like sixteen player pianos, xylophones, gongs, sirens, airplane propellors... the list sounds like the basement of a mad musical scientist than a score order.

Which is just as well - the music sounds like someone set someone loose in a piano factory with a sledgehammer and a couple of tabs of microdot.

The musical score was painstakingly reconstructed using MIDI, and the end result is... well, awesome. The fear it inspires is such that perhaps, had it been heard in the twenties, we'd all be living in Yurts in Eugene, Oregon, and Y2K would mean "pass the bowl, bro."

      Album Description

The ultimate cello CD. The selections are romantic at times and then its Rock and Roll. Electic 5 stringed cello is blended with acoustic cello and a very hip band.

      4 out of 5 stars Mello Cello.......2000-10-06

I saw Marston perform at a street fair in the Palm Springs area last summer. He produces the most hauntingly beautiful sounds via his electric cello and you imagine yourself during the crusade period somewhere in England.

This album features soundtracks of current and classic films. Martson stated that his personal favorite was "Stairway to Heaven" mine is the Zorro theme.
