Befitting the film's hip goth vibe, its accompanying soundtrack is suitably dark and sexy, with a strong mix of new songs and nü-metal hits. In an interesting move, Korn frontman Jonathan Davis collaborated with composer (and former Oingo Boingo keyboardist) Richard Gibbs on 5 of the CD's 14 tracks, though Davis doesn't sing his songs. Instead, taking those duties are Static-X's Wayne Static on "Not Meant for Me," Disturbed's David Draiman on "Forsaken," Linkin Park's Chester Bennington on "System," Marilyn Manson on "Redeemer," and Orgy's Jay Gordon on "Slept So Long." Most of the Davis-Gibbs collaborations are akin to more atmospheric, dramatic Korn tunes, lent a distinctive personality by each singer, with Manson's being the creepiest-coolest and most aggressive entry. While these adroit alliances make the soundtrack a must-have for each of the band's fans (not to mention the Korn faithful), the previously released cuts are also winners. Deftones' creepy "Change," Papa Roach's angry "Dead Cell," and Disturbed's memorable rage "Down with the Sickness"--in addition to lesser-known, but sinister and titillating offerings from Godhead, Kidney Thieves, Earshot, Tricky, and others--are all worth the price of admission to this "damned" stellar soundtrack. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars Not Musically Damned.......2007-07-08

If you like the movie, the music that goes along with it rocks. Heavy Metal from bands you know and ones that aren't as familar but still good. There are songs that where specifically made for the CD but song by known artists. The music is surprisingly fitting for vampires even if the artists had not imagined them as they wrote the lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars A must have .......2007-07-03

contains some outstanding Music , a must have for any Rock & Roll fan . the perfect soundtrack to a great movie

4 out of 5 stars Damned Good.......2007-06-10

This is a hot compilation of hard rock / electronica with a dark and sinister edge. I put it right up there with the soundtracks to The Matrix and Blade: Trinity. Indispensible for night creatures who love to dance!

5 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-06-03

I like edgy music and movies, but it's easier for me to stomach the movies than the music. I liked the Queen of the damned movie and while I was watching it I noticed/heard it had some interesting, catchy songs. And that's why I'm writing this review; to tell some who are "wary" of the dark side (lol) that this album is not just nonesensical, violent, loud garbage. A lot of these songs seemed to be created carefully and are catchy. i give it a thumbs up. And R.I.P. Aaliyah. We love and miss you.

5 out of 5 stars The Valley of the Damned.......2007-07-19

Excellent album. The only thing that I didn't like about it was the way the vocals were recorded. They seemed a little muddy. Boosting the mids on my stereo helped a little bit, but they still felt drowned out. Overall a great album (that's not as quite as cheesy as Inhuman Rampage) by a great band!

5 out of 5 stars Vallet of the Damned.......2007-05-22

The first Dragonforce Album. A must have for any Powermetal lover or just anyone who loves melody and people how know how to play their instruments

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Sonic Firestorm or Inhuman Rampage.......2007-03-08

I own all three of Dragonforce's albums, and this was the last one that I purchased. It definitely has a different sound to it than Sonic Firestorm and Inhuman Ramapge. VOtD isn't quite as filled with guitar shreddage and the overall recording sounds kind of echoey and hollow. I really like the sound of their last two albums better than this one. If you are new to Dragonforce I would suggest Sonic Firestorm and Inhuman Rampage, in that order, before you purchase this album. They have better recording quality and I think also better songs and overall a better sound.

1 out of 5 stars I'm sorry, but I have to state my opinion.......2007-03-04

I believe Dragonforce is one of the worst bands ever. Now, I didn't say they aren't talented, what I'm saying is their music has no emotion. This is in no way metal. Metal is about AGGRESSION. If you add in a lead guitarist that plays video game riffs all day, there's no way you can headbang. The guitar solos are so robotic, it's ridiculous to the point that you have to stop playing all these annoying scales over and over again. Listen to a Darrell Dimebag solo. THAT'S EMOTION. This whole band sounds like something out of a Sonic the Hedgehog video game.To be honest, I have no idea how anyone could listen to something like this.
This band is TERRIBLE.

4 out of 5 stars the force of a dragon.......2007-02-08

Love them or hate them. The best or the worst.
That's usually how it goes with Dragonforce. Despite whatever people say, I think Dragonforce's first effort, Valley of the Damned, is a great effort.

Valley of the Damned is THE song on this album. Everything else pales in comparison. In true Dragonforce style, the song is fast and the lyrics stay in the genre of fantasy. The outro to the song declines in speed, showing that the Li and Totman are indeed human.

Other good songs off the CD are Black Fire, Starfire, and Black Winter Night. The track to avoid is Revelations. If you memorize Valley of the Damned and listen to Revelations, you can clearly see a strong resemblence. If I were to listen to Revelations without even hearing Valley, I would still say it's a mediocre song.

If you like fast power metal with crazy guitar solos, then you'll enjoy Valley of the Damned. And if you're a true Dragonforce fan, you'll start to count how many times you hear "Over mountains high" in their songs...so far, I'm up to three.

5 out of 5 stars Queen of the Damned - The Score Album..........2006-07-25

Can I rate an album with '5' stars for one song? Yes! "On the Beach" with it's classical sound was all it took for me to buy the CD. Folks, that says it all! Five stars!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2006-06-14

Davis did a beautiful job crafting the lyrics and the musical accompaniment to more closelymatch the mood of the original books than the movie itself. The music can be eerily chilling or straightforward thrilling. In the movie, Davis did sing the lyrics himself. His record label forbid him to release an album with any other company, so he had guest singers sing his lyrics on the soundtrack and a different singer for the score.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful.......2006-05-18

I love both soundtracks, but i wonder if anyone knows how to get ahold of the version Jonathan Davis does in the movie. I noticed that different artists do the songs from the movie on the soundtrack, but in the actual movie...it was Jonathan singing some of those songs. I want to get that version too!! Does anyone know how to get it????

4 out of 5 stars Soundtrack.......2006-03-09

I enjoyed this soundtrack. The only thing I question is why is there 2 soundtracks? They have divided the music from the movie into 2 CD's.

5 out of 5 stars world of shadows and murks.......2005-12-27

The movie itself is trash, i would never call it a horror...and if i were Ann Rice i would never agree to use my books as a plot for such a poor production...but the music...the music is the only worthy thing in this movie...its dark, deep and wonderful..giving more atmosphire to the story than the movie ever could...all tracks are incredible and shows the truth about sad, wasteful, lonley existence in empty world of darkness...the music is much more darker, serious and miserable then the movie itself..i love listening to it...its the music full of anxiety, pain and sorrow....showing perfectly the atmosphire from the book....who read it knows what i mean...Jonathan Davis along with Richard Gibbs did a really great job...so different accorading to what he usualy does with KoRn, i hope we will here more such great music from him.

5 out of 5 stars Uk PUNK Classic- Essential!!!.......2007-03-10

The fact that theres only 3 other reviews up to this point shows how underrated this classic is. This is the first "punk " record out of the Uk released before the pistols clash etc. The Damned really were a special group combining tight songwriting unbelievable energy and more importantly a sense of humor. Almost every song on this record (cd) is a stone cold classic - crisp quick loud full of fun and well "rocking".
Great vocals by singer/ vampire Dave Vanian- a booming voice over shearing riffs and pounding drums. This along with Machine Gun Ettiquette (the damneds third lp)is a must own alongside Never mind the bollocks the clash's debut and In the City by the Jam. The damned still tour (yeah theyre fatter older and not nearly as good as the glory days but worth seeing all the same. THe damned also stayed exclusively on Independant labels while all the other "punk" bands signed major label deals. The damned did sign with Mca in the mid eighties and suffered artisically despite some flirts with major success. Its been heralded as the Uk's best from 1977 and its hard not to agree.

5 out of 5 stars the Damned,Damned,Damned.......2006-03-08

The Damned have been creating caos for thirty years
the 1st to do it all and undoubted the best .On this album, Lead singer Dave Vanian,Lead guiarist and {writer on the majority of the album }Brian James,Bass guitar Captain Sensible, and Drummer Rat Scabies completely crush all hopes for anybody wanting to rock the hardest.Fast ,Heavy songs played as if they where your abusive stepdad.Probly the most underrated Punk band ,or just band in genaral.Songs like "Feel the pain" and "fan club"offer a darker more "gothic" sound, while "Stab your back"(writen by Scabies)and "NEAT,NEAT,NEAT" provide some serious tremours through the vains that would scare a Junkie.
"See her tonight" is forsure the peak song of the album.so full of energy from begining to end it makes a speed addict gelious.
A must have Album for anyone who considers themselves a true punker and for anyone that loves rock and roll

5 out of 5 stars The best British punk album.......2005-11-08

Okay, I definatly have a bias twords early American punk (the Ramones, Johnny Thunders, ect). But I must conclude this is an absolute punk classic! Being the first British punk album, you can definatly hear its American influences. Heck, most of it sounds like Johnny Thunders. Despite all this, it is incredibly unique and just flat out rocking. The Damned did punk rock before and better than anyone else in Britain. The songwriting is fantastic (most of it by guitarist Brian James) and the musicianship is much better than the average punk band. A good deal of the songs don't follow the set three-chord punk route. As I said above, Brian James was one of punk's best songwriters, with his tunes such as "Neat Neat Neat" and "New Rose" are undisputed punk classics. The band went downhill after he left unfortunatly, even though "Machine Gun Etiquitte" was a good album. I'm very glad to see someone had the brains to put this back in print.

5 out of 5 stars A punk CLASSIC finally back in-print!.......2005-11-07

The Sex Pistols, the Ramones, and the Clash get more props for kick-starting punk, but the lesser-known but equally influential band, the Damned, deserve a place next to them. Their debut, produced by Nick Lowe and issued in 1977 (a landmark year in punk-rock), is a stone-cold classic. You may recognize "New Rose," the best track here and not surprisingly their first single, but just about every track here is great. Just listen to the samples and hear for yourself - this is punk rock at its best, no pretensions, no pomposity, just raw, adrenaline-fueled rock that doesn't let up or burn out. This album went out-of-print for a little awhile, but now it's BACK IN-PRINT for a pretty fair price, only $14 retail.

Like the Sex Pistols, the Damned imploded soon after their phenomenal debut, but fortunately, they reunited within a year and had a long and remarkably consistent career, a rarity in punk rock. However, their debut remains their best and the first place to look.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Damned Fan.......2007-05-13

I am vey happy now that I have aquired this c.d.after a long time looking elswhere.

5 out of 5 stars Like others have said.......2007-03-05

This is the damned go goth. It is not entirely successful. But, it is not entirely a waste. The damned had come full circle at this point. Captain sensible had his number 1 hit and the damned seemed to be less punk visionaries then fashion victims. Phantasmagoria is less a theme than an acurate description. Where do you go from punk? What do you rebel against when the world you protested against accepts you? You become what is feared at the moment. Goth was feared backin the 80's. By radio and MTV. It was a rejection of standards if you will. So the first punk band EVER rejected those standards. They quit one album after this (at least they did before the reunion tours and the sad reunion albums) This is the second to last REAL albums from punk gods trying to be realivant. Part of it is part of it isn't. We woulnd't have goth bands at all if they had remained silent. So piss off detractors.

4 out of 5 stars Not punk, but still enjoyable.......2006-05-18

I you're used to the original punk Damned music you might be disappointed, but if you are willing to listen to something a little gothier and can still enjoy Dave Vanian's gorgeous voice you might want to check this one out. It is a slow, melodic, very full-bodied musical album with a little gothier tone than the orginal Damned. But at the same token, I don't find this album a downer or too slow to enjoy. It is best listened to as back-ground music. As with most Damend albums, the lyrics are a little annoyingly shallow and silly (so don't listen too hard), but Dave still sounds great and the music is well put together, like always. I am a pretty big early punk fan, but I still enjoy this album, although it's not for everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Goth done...who knows?.......2006-04-29

So, they would save the ultimate cheesetasticalness for Anything, which even the most devoted Damned fan probably couldn't sit throught without cringing.

Phantasmagoria sets up ubergoth with kitschy pop songs and melodramatic instrumentals (with "Sanctum Santorium" being the zenith of dramatics). It seems like they are poking fun at themselves in some songs and their appearance, giving in to Dave Vanian's wannabe vampire image (did he get fang implants or are they just removable caps?).

Anyway, for the first video they did, "Grimly Fiendish", all of the Damned members are wearing late 1700 puffy shirt (always reminds me of that 'Seinfeld' episode) and coats in a dirty alleyway sort of setup. In their live tv performances, only Roman Jugg seems to be comfortable in those clothes, while Brynn Merrick and Rat Scabies ditch the garbs for their own clothes. Why am I talking about what they are wearing, and why should anyone care? I get the feeling that it was the record company's idea to market them as a great new wave/goth band and wanting to get far away from their disruptive punk days. ANd it worked. They would hit the charts with Grimly Fiendish and early the next year with "Eloise", which they performed about a millions times or more just in that year alone. And it doesn't help the fact that on their video promo release "Light at The End of the Tunnel", we go from the video for their great punk anthem "Smash It Up" to "Grimly Fiendish", a poppy happy little ditty that seems out of place. You need some sort of footage from The Black album to Strawberries to fill in the gap. But i'm going way over my head here, this is a review for "Phantasmagoria".

I don't mean to sound cynical about this album, I do enjoy it. Some of great songs on here are Street of Dreams, Shadow of Love and There'll Come A Day. If you are a hardcore fan of their punk days and too elitist to think otherwise, maybe this album isn't for you. If you want to be curious about this album, buy it. Really, you'll enjoy it, it might take some time, but it is a good one.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it from the day I first heard it.......2006-02-25

I remember listening to this at secondary school in the 80's I loved it then and I still love it now. If you want a great Damned album this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-05-17

This album is supremely perfect. Every song is addicting and is soaked with highly energetic and bounchy rhythms and beats. I personally really love "Looking at You", "Plan 9, Channel 7", "Liar", "These Hands", and "Smash it Up Pts. 1&2" However all the songs on this album are worthy enough to listen to about a thousand times each, that may be an exaggeration (one truely might get tired of listening to a song that many times), but with this album, I sincerely doubt it's possible to get tired of it. If you are just recently figuring out of you like the Damned or not, give this album a listen and i'm sure you will love it. If not, then maybe this kind of music just isn't for you.
This album is perfect and I love it to death. One of the great ones, this is.

5 out of 5 stars Machine Gun Etiquette.......2007-02-23

This is the album where The Damned passed their contemporaries by leaps and bounds. Every track is fresh and different, and all come straight out of the blue. I place this in the same rarified, esoteric air as The Beatles' "Sargeant Pepper" and White Albums, the Replacement's "Hootenanny", 'The Clash's "London Calling" or Alice Cooper's "School's Out". It transcends any expectation, genre, or stereotype. You should hear this.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best punk album ever!.......2006-12-16

The Damned is the most underrated punk band. And they are awesome! You have to get "Machine gun Ettiquette" if you even remotely like punk. this is the essential damned. Although, the original recording is very good. Get that too. This is great punk!

4 out of 5 stars Overall an excellent album.......2006-05-18

Machine Gun Etiquette and Damned Damned Damned are the two most actual "punk" albums that the Damned have and they are both excellent. They have much quicker paced songs, and more aggressive (if the Damned could ever be characterized this way!) and raw. The one thing I always laugh about on Machine Gun Etiquette is that the two worst songs they ever made are both on this otherwise great album - Ballroom Blitz and White Rabbit (interestingly, both are covers of previously flawless songs! Why they covered these and made them so horrible is beyond me!) But if you're a Damned fan or want to expand your original punk collection this is a good one to get.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best punk albums ever.......2006-03-20

After the disappointment of Music for Pleasure, The Damned released Machine Gun Etiquette, thought of as their 'classic', and the only one that the critics ever pay any attention to.

It's undoubtedly their most consistent album, and every song is worthy of inclusion on a greatest hits compilation. At the best, The Damned were wonderful, with songs such as Plan 9 Channel 7, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Smash it up and Love Song as the standout tracks. Anti-Pope and Noise Noise Noise will appeal to fans of the first two albums, but as a whole, Machine Gun Etiquette sounds very different to anything they'd done before.

If you're a punk fan, or a fan of The Damned, then buy it - you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars The last good damned album with the Captain........2007-03-21

After this it was pretty much downhill for the damned with Captain Sensible leaving for a very brief successful solo career. But Strawberries remains a very good record that took the eperimentation of the black album abit further on tracks like Under the floor again and life goes on- both haunting and moody rock numbers with pronounced basslines ala New Order. Here the damned showed their love of 60's pyschedelia with very british backing vocals crisp guitar lines and the crooning of deepvoiced Vanian. There still was some of the old punk damned left- especially on the opener Ignite which sounds like something from Machine gun ettiquette. On Stranger on the town theres a motown beat and horn section and this showcased the damneds improved songwriting skills and search for something beyond punk. THeres energy and hooks there just less obvious. The songs are longer and have alot of backing instruments- especially the organ which the damned have always used to good effect. This is one of their more diverse records and sits well with the Black album in feel and style. For 1982 this a very good record from one of the more original bands of the past 30 years. I have the original cd without the bonus material which i prefer because the extra tracks take away the vibe of the original album. The bonus stuff is always interesting and sometimes very good but loses steam and drags it down. If you can find the original big beat releases or the reissues of the damned with just the original tracks i recommend you pick up DAMNED DAMNED DAMNED- MGE- BLACK ALBUM AND STRAWBERRIES.

4 out of 5 stars the Damned best..........2007-01-06

Strawberries saw a level of maturity that was actually kind of surprising, and something that they couldn't match after. Songs like "Dozen Girls" or "Bad Time for Bonzo" rock hard, and are among my favorite songs ever. They also showed that they could quiet down with "Don't Bother Me." The bonus tracks are okay, not great but not bad. I miss the strawberry scented lyric sheet of the original release, though.

5 out of 5 stars soooo goood.......2006-07-06

The very first Damned album I ever heard back in the early 80s and it was definitely my least favorite after hearing damned damned damned, machine gun etiquette, and the black album but after all these years, I pop it in and its has to be one of the best records ever!!!essential, period!!!!!Late,Junior

3 out of 5 stars pretty good.......2006-03-28

This record does not live up to the hype. A bit too ambitious, it falls flat. A few catchy hooks and interesting arrangements save it from oblivion.

5 out of 5 stars The Damned's most balanced chapter gets restored.......2005-07-03

Well it's not been a very long since the "Strawberries" remaster was released, but this time it gets the packaging it deserves. Not only the original LP artwork has been restored but you also get the integral of the corresponding b-sides. Althought not as much as you might think since "Rat vs The Omni", "Citadel Zombies" and the Bimbo Jingle were originally just one track on the "Generals" single. And also if I may make a minor complaint... Their is typo in the track listing. I won't commit the offence of telling you what it is.
Anyway, enough moaning... It's nice to finally hear "The Missing Link" in its own induvidual track because it is such a beautiful piece of music.
Moving on to the album, it was the Damned's most sophisticated recording at that point. It had a well balanced mix of punk, rock, new wave, goth and also had an industrial sound to it. It was the last one with Captain Sensible before he left for a very long time but it was also the first to feature Roman Jugg who latter became a full time member of the band.
I suppose their best effort on this album is "The Dog" which is rather a forecast of the sound they were going to adopt ("Phantasmagoria" and "Anything"). "Ignite" is the ultimate hit on the album and is a crowd favorite.
So here it is... The Damned's finest in all it's glory and splendour. Get it now.

5 out of 5 stars good stuffs.......2007-05-31

I got this without having Damned Damned Damned but I got it and firgured ehh its only 3 dollars more and 2 more discs I might as well get it! Great decision on my part, the live material is great and I love the album. Deffinately buy this if you're even a minor fan of The Damned, you wont be dissapointed at all!

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Damned Damned Damned.......2007-03-19

If you've been a fan of The Damned for any substantial period of time, you most likely own a copy of Damned Damned Damned. My copy is well worn on vinyl and I have subsequently replaced it with other copies. I say other copies because this album in it's original form is a punk rock masterpiece. What more could be done to get me to run out and buy another version? Well, let's just say the impossible is possible. The 30th Anniversary Edition of Damned Damned Damned is the well worth tracking down. In the States, it's a hard-to-find import and is definitely worth the search. The original release is contained on the first CD with a generous amount of bonus material on the following two discs, most of previously unreleased except for the pesky bootlegs that have appeared over the years.

The Damned are one of the greatest punk bands to ever emerge from the UK and while some site The Clash as the one punk band that mattered, I'd beg to differ. Both bands had a rocky history of sorts, but The Damned came through it with their heads held high and managed to write one of the best comeback albums of any band's career (Grave Disorder-check it out!). Fans of their punk years will eat this up as will fans of their later more gothic era.

Up the punks, this is one album each and every punk rocker should own, it's genius!

5 out of 5 stars Essential Damned for any fan.......2007-03-07

It's difficult to believe that 30 years later, The Damned's music is still so relevant and so unmistakably powerful! My favorite track has to be New Rose - the first punk rock single ever released (on October 22, 1976). Just hearing the first few seconds of New Rose drums gives me an adrenaline rush like nothing else! You can't go wrong with The Damned... they may have stumbled onto genius, but it's theirs for the keeping!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this Damned CD........2007-03-07

This CD contains some of the greatest songs ever by the Damned, my favorite forefathers of punk. If you only buy one from them, this should be it. Although I know you'll want more.....

5 out of 5 stars A Real Country Song.......2007-03-24

Words cant describe this album its the real deal! Its nice to know someone like Dale is out there to keep country real. Heck A real country Song is all this album really is. I cant harldy stand to listen to country radio today. But thats why I got a CD player, any hoo the cd is great. And it has my favorite Dale Watson song, A Real Country Song on it.

5 out of 5 stars Best of his first Three.......2002-05-23

I thought this was the was the best of his first three I bought, which were "Cheatin Heart AttacK", (which I really liked too), "I hate these Songs", and this one. This one had some very good songs, and they were great with his voice range, and I just LOVE his voice. I am just a lady in the northern part of Northern Michigan, and love his music, and keep track of his "comings and "goings", and love to listen to his voice. This was a great tape! I gave it a 5 * rating easily!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Honkiest Tonkiest Beer Joint In Town.......2002-04-06

Great album, great songs, great mucisians. Dale is the best country music artist under 60 years old. I've been going to see Dale two or three times a month now for about a year and a half w and I had no idea that he had such a big following. If the nashville corporation would every play his music on the radio this guy would do really well. This album or "I hate these songs" is tied for Dale's best. If your ever lucky enough to be in Austin on a Thursday go to Ginny's and see him live and yell out a few titles from this album. There's just nuthing like it.

5 out of 5 stars WOW Good 'Ol Country Music.......2000-05-27

If you like TRUE country music, this is the album for you! He's from Texas, and his roots show it, it is the kind of music we are proud to say is from Texas, and it is SUCH a good listen! A must have for any Dale Watson lovers! Surprisingly, a friend of mine from WI turned me on to Dale, and now I just can't get enough of him!

5 out of 5 stars Texas telecaster and steel heaven!.......2000-02-24

...and not to mention Dale's great songwriting and delivery of his vocals that truly lives up to the billing that occasionally accompanies him "the second coming of Merle Haggard". I was born and raised on a steady diet of Haggard, Buck Owens, and Johnny Cash..... and with such a collection of their works, have confidently made the statement on many occasions that I'm really not concerned if anyone ever records anything new, as I have all I need. But am here to tell you that Dale has lit my ears like they've not been lit for a long, long time. A must listen for anyone cut from a passion for Merle and Buck.... Roy Nichols and Don Rich as well!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Iced earth owns.......2006-05-21

Okay a greatest hits album seems a good place to start for new fans no Iced earth is not a band that only makes good singles but they make killer Albums so instead buy their albums many of favorite Iced Earth songs are not featured but instead buy their records the level of passion that Matt Barlow puts in his voice touches me that may sound cheesy but they do OWN DEADTH TO FALSE METAL EMO POP!!

5 out of 5 stars Iced Earth In Flames.......2006-03-22

The only reason I purchased this cd is because I had heard some of Iced Earth's stuff at a friends house. I liked the variety they add to their music and the stories they tell.

4 out of 5 stars .......2005-09-06

A greatest hits package from Iced Earth is quite appropiate at this point in their career. Jon Schaffer's baby, technically, has seen its highs and lows throughout the years, from constant line up changes to rupturing one of his disks on his neck during a concert. Musically, they've always stayed on top, creating some of the most epic heavy metal, with an emphasis on the heaviness. Songs like "Disciples of the lies" and "Travel in Stygian" showcases just that, while tracks like "Melancholy" show how much power they can throw in a ballad and not sound overtly soft or poppy. This 2-CD package is packed with extensive linear notes from Jon himself in which you can see the tribulations he's gone through to keep his vision alive. Great visual presentation with stunning artwork complete this gem. If you're just getting into this band then this is the perfect vehicle to familiriaze better with them. You will see how they evolved from an early somewhat technical direction to a more straight-forward, stylized form of supreme heavy metal. I guess my only complaint is that many of my favorite songs were not included, but that's just a matter of taste. All hail Iced Earth!

2 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2005-07-01

This album was released shortly before Iced Earth moved to a new record label. This is, essentially, just one last cash in attempt by their older label. Not much of the track listing makes sense (like putting the song Damien on the disc titled The Blessed), but they did put most of the bands best songs on here. You would be much better off buying the three disc live album Alive in Athens, of Days of Purgatory.

4 out of 5 stars Kings of 90s Metal.......2005-06-09

Finally, we get a proper collection of this great band's best work.

As the lone crusaders who kept the torch alive for heavy metal in that poorest of decades that was the 90s for real rock music, this compilation is a poignant showcase of the songwriting talent and tremendous courage of band leader Jon Schaffer.

Starting from the lowest of undergrounds and building their way through excellent records like "Night of the Stormrider", "Burnt Offerings", "The Dark Saga" and the extraordinary 1998 classic "Something Wicked this Way Comes", followed by the triple CD "Alive In Athens" (one of the greatest live albums of all time), we get here gem after gem in that journey.

'Burning Times', 'The Hunter', 'Melancholy', 'Stormrider', 'Disciples of the Lie', plus the murderous live versions of 'Pure Evil' and 'Violate' (this one fittingly ending with The Trooper's riff), are some of the highlights.

The artwork and huge booklet are just gorgeous, and the only thing keeping this from being a 5 star album are the glaring omissions of "Dante's inferno" and "A Question of heaven" (easily two of the Top 5 IE songs ever) and the lack of any kind of rarities for fans.

Jon is simply peerless as a metal rhythm guitar player and Mathew Barlow, the beloved and definitive Iced Earth's vocalist, sings with an emotion, power and range that not even Tim Owens could match in this decade.

After the 'Athens' glorious peak, the band decayed with two average releases, "Horror Show" (of which the most worthy tunes are included) and "Tribute to the Gods" (a covers album which luckily is not represented).

After that the band left Century Media (so ends the period chronicled here), poised for a big time that did not arrive, since Jon's health problems, Barlow's sudden departure and further band disintegration almost stopped IE on its tracks; with the arrival of Tim Owens and the release of a better new album ("The Glorious Burden") being the only rays of light.

But on the years chronicled here, discovering Iced Earth was like entering a parallel music world in which Metallica never stopped playing metal, Iron Maiden never lost its edge and Judas Priest never lost its sense of adventure.

And for that they'll always be remembered.
