Take No Prisoners (2-CD Set) [Import] [Live]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Recorded at New York's Bottom Line in 1978 following the release of the acclaimed Street Hassle, this live document probably isn't for the casual Lou Reed fan. But if you appreciate pre-New York Lou, Take No Prisoners demonstrates, perhaps more than any other Reed artifact, the importance of major attitude and myth to classic punk. Often called "the Lou Reed comedy album," Prisoners has the totally revved-up artist coming on like a rock & roll Lenny Bruce as he delivers often hilarious monologues: Sweet Jane" and "Walk on the Wild Side" are nothing but that, with the band vamping behind him. Reed's targeted subjects include Barbra Streisand, Robert Christgau, Patti Smith, politics, the music biz, members of the audience, and, most importantly, himself. It's terrific if you like that kind of thing. The band's terrific, too, especially on "Coney Island Baby" and "Street Hassle." But as live rock albums go, this one is best viewed as the funniest of the genre, and it's reportedly one of Lou's faves. --Bill Holdship

Timelessly Innovative.......2005-12-17
It is well known that this album has inspired many women to enter into the blues music industry. I recently purchased this smart cd-- I am sorry to say that I waited so long to do so. Between the sheer anger of the song "Suffer" to the soul-full desparation of "*4 in the morning", I am completely impressed, and a permanent fan.
Outstanding!.......2002-12-03
Outstanding! Really made my day. Cathy Jean's not only the best looking female blues singer in the biz, but her voice can make the hair on my back stand up. She and her band got it going on.
Michigan Swing Dance Association!.......2002-02-10
This is another in the fine outings by the very sexy Cathy Jean. The emotion she displays is certainly displayed on the Louisiana style cut, "Unfinished Business". "Leave Me Alone" is a song of an entirely different style being that it's more bluesy in the traditional sense. Dancers will be knocked out by this hard driving tune along with "I'm Your Girl" which is just a bit quicker but with the same power to make you get up and dance.
sophistication and downhome grease.......2001-12-19
Cathy Jean is a singer/songwriter out of Baltimore, Maryland. This is her second CD, and her sound has moved towards a sophisticated blues and rock, with some contemporary influences. She has a voice that is well suited to this eclectic approach, capable of crooning in one song, and belting out a hard shuffle in the next. The music kicks off with "Be Glad", a hard shuffle, followed by the title track, a crisp blues rocker. Cathy and band then move into some jazzy funk in "**4 in the Morning**", a little of the Bo Diddley beat in "Unfinished Business", then back into the funk with "How Many". "Leave Me Alone" is a rocker with a definate soul feel, which gives way to "Why Don't You See Me", a jazzy ballad. The band then cranks out a sharp shuffle, that recalls the 70's Albert Collins sound, followed by "Please Stop Seeing That Girl", a funky acoustic blues that showcases yet another facet of Cathy Jean's voice. Dancers in the crowd are served next with the catchy rocking blues, "I'm Your Girl", then comes the sultry "See You Tomorrow", and the acoustic country-blues of "Blues Singin' Alcoholic". Next up is the New Orleans style rocker, "I Want Your Mother To Know/Rotten B." which Cathy belts out with authority. This CD closes with a nice slow blues and a gospelish blues that is a inventive synthesis of genres. SUMMARY: Cathy Jean has come up with an energetic set of blues, jazz and contemporary-blues that fits the 90's to a T. She has real fire in her voice, and all of the music here is driven by a genuine sense of passion that makes the songs literally jump out at you from the speakers. A great mix of sophistication and downhome grease. --Al Handa, Delta Snake Daily Blues

I am a manager of a public library and also play blues harmonica. I bought her CD, "I Want", for the library... it kicks. Listening to her and looking at her is a deadly combination, makes my head swim.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic cd - Take No Prisoners hard to find :-).......2006-03-08
I looked for Take No Prisoners for years and years so I could have in my collection Let's Apologise. I bought this dual cd when it released about 2 years ago because I was so excited to be able to get TNP which had been 'discontinued'. If you want to get some of Peabos best work, then it's here for you in this double release. Let's Apologise would have to be one of the best songs he's ever done, but one of the best songs ever by anyone. It's cool and catchy and he sings it well, as he does with all material here. Yes the songs here are now a bit dated, but still so worth checking out. Some are still quite tight and you'll find 'new' songs for yourself to love. I hope that Peabo can release some new music for us fans to enjoy. Go get this now; you'll love it.
Peabo's first two Elektra LPs on one CD...available again!!!.......2003-07-04
The two albums reissued on this CD were among Peabo's strongest sellers and both gave Peabo major hits while solidifying his status as one of the best balladeers of his generation. "If Ever You're In My Arms Again", "I'm In Love", "She's Over Me", "Love Always Finds A Way", "Learning The Ways Of Love" and "Slow Dancing" are simply gorgeous and leave no doubt as to Mr. Bryson's being a great crooner. Thanks to Collectables for reissuing these classic albums on one CD at a good price.

A Rare Treat.......2007-05-30
A very rare album on any format (even i only own it on vinyl) of some performances by lou in late 74'. probably the best live cuts of any of reeds work. this album gives you a great feel of what a night with lou was like in his glam days. great quality of recording and reeds interaction with the crowd through most of the songs make it #1 for me. the real stand outs here are "sweet jane", "satellite of love", a wonderfully bluesy 10+ minute rendition of "waiting for the man" and his telling of how he wrote "walk on the wild side" while it's played. a must for any reed/velvets fan.

if it ain't the r n r animal himself..........2007-05-20
I have been a Lou Reed fan since the early seventies, and in my opinion his best solo albums are Transformer, Berlin, Street Hassle and Take No Prisoners. That's right, I rate TOP among Lou's best recordings. I think the performances are excellent, examples being the jazzy version of I Wanna Be Black, a moving, powerful version of Coney Island Baby and the masterful delivery of Street Hassle. The way Sweet Jane kicks in at the beginning of the album is priceless. The singing is among the best of all his recordings. While the album doesn't necessarily grab a hold of you immediately, repeated listens reveal Lou at his sleazy, street-wise best.
Strange release in the first place.......2007-02-27
Lou Reed is a genius and deserves the right to artistic experiments like this one. Remembering my vinyl copy I believe it was recorded with two microphones encased in something resembling a human head (I am not kidding) which may be what is holding back a pristine remastering. I don't have the inclination to buy this yet but the best cut is 'I wanna be black' which is totally different that what appeared on the studio release earlier. I went to the Bottom Line several times during his reign there (he seemed to play there every 6 months, one year my girlfriend's b-day, our anniversary, my b-day....)This cd does capture the madness of those days. We eventually took enough friends to capture a back table and almost got thrown out for pounding our beer bottles on the table if I am not mistaken. This release was one of those nights where it sounds like he pounded back about 5 coffees and a pack of cigarettes before jumping on stage....I am just sorry I haven't been able to follow his art like I used to, lost faith around the 'drinking in public' period. Ever hear his Rock and Roll heart release?
lou reed- take no prisioners.......2007-01-06
It's a weird live concert, in which lou is very much under drug effects and keeps talking and insulting, laughing, screeming, pull anothers leg. well in fact, If you like weird things about lou reed as the metal machine, this is defenetly a Master Opera. you must have it
Swallow!.......2006-01-17
'If you all expected that Metal Machine Music would have been the last surprise, just swallow it', Reed must have thought back then. He just strikes again by releasing a double album of live versions where, instead of performing (singing) his songs along with the very nice instrumental treatment they received from the band, he decided to simply speak most of the time. He criticises everything and everybody here, with no character/persona construction and no poses: it's simple Lou Read-himself, the man, and the many opinions he wants to share with you, like it or not. It's a really enjoyable experience for fans. The record gives the impression that you're there, in front of the man, sometimes laughing from his harsh words, sometimes wishing he would REALLY do your favourite song, sometimes imagining you're going back home to hear the definitive versions of the studio albums. But meanwhile you're travelling through the cover pictures and if it's your thing you'll like to spend this time inside of Lou's world. For casual listeners it can be a disappointment though. Begin elsewhere and then come check it later.
"I Just Flew In From Miami F.L.A. and Boy Are My Arms Tired...".......2005-07-21
If you're reading this review, you've already taken a ganders at the track listing. You probably think "wow, what a great set! My favorite VU and Lou Reed songs performed live!" This is all well and good, unless you plan on actually listening to the tracks. if you wanna do that, check out one of Lou's other 3,000 live albums instead. If you love Lou and want to take a double shot of Lou's attitude, have a few laughs, and hear him talk about whatever was on his mind, then you may enjoy this. I do. This is what the Velvet Underground would've sounded like if it was fronted by Larry David; at times it sounds like a Charles Bukowski performance, or a lecture delivered by Hunter Thompson at a University. Both these guys drew crowds who sometimes cared less about their writing and more about being around their infamous personalities and to hear their drunken ramblings. This album is like that; the music often takes a backseat to Lou's personality, and drunken ramblings. That being said, the music is still top notch, and if you're still interested in this live document after reading all the reviews, then by all means get it. Just know what you're getting yourself into.

Their Best.......2006-03-18
This singer is so much better than that other guy who sings through his nose. Many of you may not be aware of this bit of trivia, but the other singer sang all of "Flirtin' With Disaster" through his nose without moving his lips at all. His jaw was wired shut at the time due to an accident.
Lady Luck is my favorite song from this cd. They played it on the radio back when the album first came out but I guess the public didn't like the new singer. All the songs rock though.
Yet Another Great Molly Hatchet CD.......2006-01-11
TAKE NO PRISONERS is yet another great CD from Jacksonville's Molly Hatchet. Jimmy Farrar is a great singer, and the triple-guitar tag team of lead players Dave Hlubek and Duane Roland, plus rhythm guitarist Steve Holland, really cooks here. The band also broadens its sound by adding horns on some songs. It's great to have this album back in print, and the belief among past and present members that the young Australian tourist imprisoned in Indonesia on drug-smuggling charges was unjustly convicted makes this an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

Made in USA in 2002, Serial# A-55044, Playing Time 39:25
Even though released in 2002, this 10 track compilation is a retrospective of the first 8 TN albums, up to 1981's "Intensities In 10 Cities".
There are already a number of "best of" discs covering that era: "Motor City Madness", "Super Hits", "Great Gonzos!", "The Very Best Of" just to name a few...
The tracks are in random order, NOT presented chronologically: "Cat Scratch Fever" opens the disc, followed by "Stormtroopin'", Bite Down Hard", "Just What The Doctor Ordered" and "Workin' Hard, Playin' Hard". We then get a sample of Ted's on-stage energy through "Yank Me Crank Me" from the "Double Live Gonzo" album.
"Hammerdown" (featuring Meat Loaf on vocals), "Need You Bad" and "Scream Dream" precede the CD's last track, "Put Up Or Shut-Up" lifted from the live recording "Intensities In 10 Cities".
A somewhat good introduction to the material from the Epic label (Nugent was then signed to the Atlantic label), but the disc could have included many more due to the amount of space left unused of the disc (about 40 minutes!!!)
If you're unfamiliar with Nugent, I suggest you pick up "The Ultimate" instead, a 2-disc compilation covering the same era, but featuring over 2 hours of guitar heroics.

Album Description
The second in a series of 3 "Unreleased" CD's singer-songwriter Ian created specifically to benefit The Pearl Foundation, this album consists of high-quality demos and worktapes of songs that never made it on to her "general release" albums.
Customer Reviews:
Janis follows her own instructions.......2007-01-31
Starting at the age of 15 way back in 1966, Janis Ian was a child prodigy as both a performer and songwriter with the release of her "Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking}" a brave and controversial song about interracial dating that became a Top Ten hit. She has had hits and multiple Grammies since then including that standard of female teenage angst "At Seventeen" and become a highly successful writer of hits for others. However, in a youth obsessed market, her individualistic folk style fell out of commercial favor and she has released a series of brilliant records on a succession of smaller and smaller labels.
This album, from Janis' personal vaults is a collection of unreleased songs that didn't make it onto previous albums or alternate takes on ones that did and the only real question is "why haven't we heard these sooner?" Much of this album, such as the title song, "Don't Rush The River", "Holes", "As Far As Lonely Goes", "You Don't Know My Heart" and "Childhood Hero" (written at the request of Donny Osmond but never recorded by him) are as good as anything that appears on any of Janis' commercial albums. If you like open, honest songwriting accompanied by first class guitar playing and a velveteen voice that cushions the sorrow and anger while still bringing the power, this is for you.

Product Description
The Malvinas are . . . a feisty blend of jazz, traditional and folk-pop. With roots all over North America, the Malvinas pull together a broad palette of regional colors including: the Blues-tinged grooves of the deep South, the spicy Cajun flavors of Louisiana, the Celtic modes of Eastern Canada and the libertarian troubadour tradition of the Lone Star State.
