Album Description

"If the devil ever decided to go down to Nashville, no one would expect him to bring a sax. But if he did, Boots Randolph's name would be the first to pass his fiery lips. The veteran saxman plays one hell of a horn, if you'll pardon the expression." -- Las Vegas Sun

Legendary Nashville-based tenor saxophonist Boots Randolph presents his ZOHO debut, a collection of fourteen jazz classics. One of the most recognizable sounds in popular music, Randolph's sax can be heard on hits by Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, and more.

5 out of 5 stars Superbly Boots.......2007-07-09

This CD contains an amazing variety of tunes and all played artistically. If you're a Boots fan, you have to have this recording! If you are not a Boots fan...shame on you! How fortunate that he recorded this one for us.

5 out of 5 stars VERY Smooth, Classy Jazz Collection.......2007-06-30

Boots Randolph has been around for many years, his style of music may have changed over time, but here he reassures us with this fine CD that the tenets of fine jazz are alive and well. He is as accomplished on the tenor sax as anyone out there and his intuitive sense of rhythm and variation on tune lines is sensitive and so secure that listening to his music is as relaxing as an evening with old friends.

Randolph is backed by Roddy Smith, guitars, Steve Willets, piano, Tim Smith, bass, and Ray Von Rotz, drums and percussion. The interplay among these musical giants makes the finest of collaborative adventures. The songs interpreted are oldies but goodies including 'You'll never know', 'Round Midnight', 'Cry me a river', 'I'll be seeing you' and ten others. The sound is smooth, wry, fanciful when called for and melancholic for the blues works.

For an album of 'solid old-fashioned jazz' played by the gifted Boots Randolph and associates, this is hard to beat. It is refreshingly solid music making. Grady Harp, June 07

4 out of 5 stars At 80 and he's still rocking !.......2007-06-14

His legendary name will always be associated with country music and to the smach hit music from Yakety Sax! (Sony), but he has long loved swinging jazz.
This album is composed entirely of classic jazz standards - what he calls "evergreens" - and none have appeared on any of his dozens of previous albums.
His history as a country star, or even before that, his experiences playing sax for singers like Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, or Johnny Cash, would lead you to believe that he'd be a little adrift on the songs on this album, but you'd be wrong.
He does very well with them, and if his breathy style isn't to your taste, you still have to admire the sentiment he puts into every song.
On every song in this collection, you will hear a master musician deliver the melody in a way that only Boots can, and you will hear the most adventurous jazz solos that Boots has recorded to date.
He is in great form and shows amazing tecnique and skills.
Pianist Steve Willets and guitarist Roddy Smith have solo space and do a great job, but Boots is the true star!
This is a delight of an album, one of his best ever.
You will be positively impressed!
My favourite tracks are "I'll Be Seeing You", "'Round Midnight" and "L-O-V-E".

5 out of 5 stars Reasons to be Cheerful.......2005-08-11

Ian's death certainly left a void in the music world. Ian introduced a break-water ripple to the new wave scene. That is, Ian is the master of good fun "pub punk." What Benny Hill is to British comedy; Ian Dury is to music -- cleverly provacative and entertaining. Ian Dury employed a mixture of lyrics and music to generate songs that either increased awareness on a social issue (such as "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll") or were simple pub tunes to cheer you up -- such as "Reasons to be Cheerful" and "Hit Me With Your Rhythum Stick." This CD features rarities of some of Ian's classis. You will love the way Ian effectively uses his deep voice to create the English "pub singer" atmosphere. True, Ian's voice is "limited." But, he uses it to absolute perfection. I definitely recommend this CD. After one listen, you will be hooked on Ian Dury and the Block Heads.

Album Description

Sammy Kershaw's 1st single, "Tennessee Girl" from his new Category 5 Records album "Honky Tonk Boots" is moving up the charts and reminding fans why they love Sammy Kershaw.

The Louisiana native began his professional career as a pre-teen following the untimely death of his father. Pursuing his career with uncommon passion, Kershaw signed to Mercury in the early '90s and ran off a string of smash singles including "She Don't Know She's Beautiful," "National Working Woman's Holiday," "Cadillac Style," "Don't Go Near The Water" and "Love Of My Life" among many others. Those hits propelled Kershaw into the ranks of country's top platinum-selling artists.

Sammy's Honky Tonk Boots hits the stores on 6/27/2006 and his fans will not be dissapointed with the fine collection of songs that has been assembled.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great classic country!!!.......2007-04-01

Excellent selection of country-country [with the emphasis on the first "country"], i.e., no pop music. The ballad "One Step at a time" is perhaps my favorite; also the "fun" songs are very good, such as Tennessee Girl, Honky Tonk Boots, Baby's Got her Blue Jeans On, and Cantaloupes on Mars. Plain old country, that rocks you off your feet or gets you singing along, and definitely, if you are in your blues, or feeling down and out, lifts you off and makes you feel good about yourself. All in all, a very good buy.

4 out of 5 stars Sammy Sings Again.......2007-01-11

It has been a long time for Sammy to be out of the spotlight. I used to enjoy him and missed some of his humorous songs. This is a good album for him and he stays pretty much with what he sings best. I liked it and it is more upbeat than downbeat. If you are a Sammy fan you will like it.

5 out of 5 stars Honky Tonk Boots.......2006-11-03

New music, new time. And Sammy still can perform with the best of them. If your a Sammy Kershaw fan this new music will be greatly enjoyed by you as much as me. His voice lives on

4 out of 5 stars Kershaw's "Boots" Fill Up Well .......2006-07-01

Prime Cuts: One Step at a Time, Evangeline, Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On

Donned with a George-Jones vocal fedora, Kershaw has an in-born country credibility that one can't help but think country whenever he sings. However, rather than finding asylum as Jones' clone, Kershaw has carved his own niche with his brand of contemporary pop-country with an occasional toss of novelty thrown in (a la "Queen of the Double Wide Trailer," "Your Tattoo" and "National Working Women Holiday.") However, the lack of promotion and cycle of mediocre singles have had left Kershaw without the support of a major label since the turn of the millennium. "Honky Tonk Boots," is Kershaw's sophomore CD released on an independent imprint. This time being released on the enterprising Category 5 Records which also umbrellas artists such as Travis Tritt and Craig Hand. Despite, being released on a tighter budget, producers Buddy Cannon and Norro Wilson, have bent over backwards in helming a product that's vacuously superior boasting cuts written by some of Nashville's most sought after scribes including Craig Wiseman, Bob McDill, Bob Dipero, Jeffrey Steele and Tim Mensy.

Famed writer Bob McDill (writer of Alan Jackson's "Gone Country" and Alabama's "Song of the South") has a whopping three cuts here and they are this CD's apogee. "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On," a former number 1 hit for Mel McDaniels, is a sensuous trump card with an infectious melody that easily resides in the memory bank after a few listens. The second McDill entry, albeit a newly composed, is the Cajun-spiced romper "Evangeline" that is punctuated throughout by some toe-taping mandolin. While "High Society," this time finding McDill teaming with Dickey Lee, is Kershaw's version of Garth Brooks' "Friends in High Places," giving some well-deserved kowtow to the blue-collars.

When it comes to the ballads, Tim Mensy's "One Step at a Time," is regret-laden 3/4 lament finding Kershaw radiating a Jones-like ache that's sure to square with the heart. "The Battle," on the hand, deals with domestic unrest framed by some mournful sounding steel guitars. However, not everything works, lead single "Tennessee Girl," despite being written by Craig Wiseman and Bob Dipero, is a nondescript uptempo love ditty surrounded by a hot messy of a production. And "Mama's Got a Tattoo" (that's in the shape of America) is a far too desperate attempt at patriotism and social justice that turns around biting itself as trite. Much better in terms of upbeat numbers is Danny Mayo's Caribbean-tingled scorcher "Cantaloupes on Mars" --- a catchy kiss-off by Kershaw to his no-good paramour vowing that he'll never go back to her "even if there were Cantaloupes on Mars."

Overall, "Honky Tonk Boots" testifies to the still commanding voice of Kershaw that breathes and nuances country music at its best. With a set of mostly well chosen songs, this is a vast improvement from some of Kershaw's lackluster latter Mercury CDs. And with the number of "older" artists resuscitating again vis-à-vis independent albums, this shoulders as one of the better ones without given to any indications of inferiority. The boots that Kershaw wears still encase footprints of greatness to come.

5 out of 5 stars Sammy Kershaw is back!.......2006-06-30

If you loved some of the early music that Sammy Kershaw did, then you will LOVE his new release, Honky Tonk Boots. The first song on the CD (as well as the new single), "Tennessee Girl", is the kind of fun true country song that is not getting played on country radio. All the songs on this CD have the true country song that is missing on radio these days...none of that "Pop" sound here. Some other great songs on this CD are the title cut "Honky Tonk Boots"--another tap your foot fun song, "Mama's Got A Tattoo"--love the way Mama shows her patriotic feelings, and "Cantaloupes On Mars"--this song is just GREAT. The ballads on this CD ("One Step At A Time" and "The Battle") are just fantastic country ballads! But my all time favorite song on this CD is "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On" the old Mel McDaniels' song that Sammy Kershaw does justice! Great to here this old song!!

So go and get this great CD! You will not be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars Listen to it a couple of times.......2002-11-30

The first time I listened to this album I was somewhat disappointed. However for some reason the next morning I started to hum some of the new versions of the songs, could it be that my subconcious was kicking in to pop the cd into my car again.

Are all the songs great, no. Are some of the songs fantastic, yes!!!! I have never been a big Mcartney fan, however his version of "I'm partial to your abracadabra" is incredible. Billy Bragg's indian inspired version of "Billericay Dickie" is comical. Listening to Cerys Mathews version of "Woman" is rocking to say the least. "Arseholes..." is performed magically. I could have done without Robbie Williams out of tune version of Sweet Gene Vincent.

THe album is great, it was definitely worth buying

4 out of 5 stars Smashing performances from Robbie, McCartney, & Sinéad.......2001-11-19

This is an essential purchase for fans of Ian Dury, Robbie Williams, and Paul McCartney. Luckily I fall into all three categories so this was right up my street.

The concept was to re-record Ian Dury And The Blockheads' 1977 smash hit album with the annoying title "New Boots And Panties" with the Blockheads supplying the instrumental talent and a group of guest vocalists replacing the late Ian Dury. It could be seen as tasteless to replace the very person to whom you're paying tribute, but because Dury's talents lay as much in the field of songwriting as in performing, this isn't the case. That said, some performers, especially Madness take their vocal inspiration directly from Dury's style and thus their offerings are as much tributes to the singer as his songs.

The album opens with Sinéad O'Connor's sexy version of Wake Up And Make Love To Me. Slight changes in the lyrics and Sinéad's inimitable voice render the song completely different from Dury's carry-on naughty-humour original, yet retain the integrity of the piece.

Robbie Williams, a great chum of Ian's in real life performs Sweet Gene Vincent possibly better than Ian himself, while the Blockheads rock it up in the style they perfected over years of live performance. This would make a great single if Robbie's record company would agree.

Another contender for strongest song on the album is Paul McCartney's Partial To Your Abracadabra. This is the Paul McCartney who sang Long Tall Sally back in action and the piano accompaniment is reminiscent of Lady Madonna. It's astonishing how well he fits in with the Blockheads.

Madness perform without the Blockheads, but this is all right, because their band set-up, the use of the saxophone, and some of Suggs's vocal mannerisms were copied directly from Ian & The Blockheads, and the band makes a polished imitation of the original.

Then it all goes horribly wrong. Yes, Billy Bragg is a cockney too, but he lacks the charm of Ian Dury, and his backing band is less cohesive than the Blockheads. His version of Billericay Dickie is just annoying.

Wreckless Eric's Clever Trevor manages to be funny and interesting, with a very toppy vocal, and the last four tracks are unremarkable, if competent covers.

I would give this album 5 stars for the first four songs, three for the last five, but Zero for Billy Bignose, hence my average rating of ****

    3 out of 5 stars Just so-so..........2007-03-23

Wow, I'm really sorry, but as a big Ian Dury fan, and as much as I really, really wanted to like this album, it's really just so-so, and I'd really only recommend it for Ian Dury "completists". That having been said, some of the songs are kind of interesting, like Billy Bragg's middle-eastern-sounding version of Billericay Dickie (an odd choice for the openly-[...] Bragg... he should have done "If I Was With A Woman"). Actually, come to think of it, if they ever did one of those watered-down Broadway musical versions of Ian Dury's music, like they did for, say, Billy Joel or Abba or The Four Seasons, etc., it would probably sound much like this. And, I'm sorry, but, despite the good intentions of the reviewer here who says: "Buy a copy for a good cause.." thinking that a portion of these sales go to cancer research, I don't think that applies to used and remaindered copies of the disk, which are all that are available now that it's out of print.

5 out of 5 stars Reasons To Be Cheerful, Part 4.......2001-07-22

Oh, man, this tribute album is good! When The Clash, Elvis Costello, and The Sex Pistols were starting to really get it together in 1977, one of the oddest recording acts of all time, Ian Dury and The Blockheads, launched with "New Boots and Panties" and the world hasn't been the same since. You either "got it" or you didn't, and plenty did. Most in America are either completely unaware of Ian Dury and his antics or are completely indifferent. What a shame for those Yanks! It's like a world without Monty Python! The two dozens years since have seen Ian succumb to the ravages of cancer. This album was done as a tribute to Ian seeing each cut from "New Boots and Panties" covered by one of his legions of fans. This ranges from Wreckless Eric to Shane MacGowan to Madness to Cerys Matthews from Catatonia with backing on each from Ian's old band The Blockheads. Often these types of endeavors are well meaning flops but, "Brand New Boots and Panties" absolutely sparkles! Clearly, everyone was having a grand old time when making their part and it shows with just one listen. Standouts include "Wake Up and Make Love With Me" by Sinead O'Connor, "I'm Partial To Your Abracadabra" by Paul McCartney, and "Billericay Dickie" by Billy Bragg and The Blokes. There's something for everyone on this disc and one-half the profits go to Cancer BACUP to help people living with cancer. Buy a copy for a good cause and play it right next to Ian's brilliant original. Help others while helping your senses to a rollicking good time!

3 out of 5 stars I WANT MY OLD BOOTS BACK !!!.......2001-04-23

When i first looked at the list of artists on the cd i thought that i was in for a real treat , how ever not one artist on the cd came close to the original. They might have if they were covering any one elses work. only Ian can do his songs , if any one else tries they ommit the accent , his warm voice and delivery that Ian had.Consequently the poetry , wit and sarcasam are lost to a muddle of noise.Dont take my word , by your own boots and panties

5 out of 5 stars Tom Rigney's Music Will Touch You In Some Way.......2004-06-09

Tom brings together several styles and rhythm but there will always be the Blues, Zydeco and Cajun influence. His music will
cause you to want to dance, and ,it may even bring a tear to your eye.
He is a master fiddle player who knows how to communicate with the listener. No one has ever played with more feeling than Tom Rigney. One reason this CD rates so high on my list is because Tom surrounds himself with top musicians. I guess the term is "tight" to describe he and his wonderful band. This is a must CD.

This is a really great album. Most of the songs are really upbeat with great rhythms. You can't help but tap your foot along with the music. It's great driving music!!

5 out of 5 stars This is a super cd.......2000-06-20

This cd is even better than The Sundogs that Tom "RIGO" Rigney was with before.

First off, let me say that this is an excellent piece of work, period. Women of Sodom could be a force to be reckoned with in the arena of female-lead electro acts...if they had more exposure and maybe cranked out a little more music. Having visited their website, I've seen the photos of their blistering S&M shows and I cannot wait for them to tour through my city. "Boots" is probably the most traditionally industrial sounding track on the album. "Jews and Arabs Become Friends" has sort of a Dead Can Dance-esque Middle Eastern sound to it that I really enjoyed. "The Doctor Song" gave me the creeps for some time -- just the thought of that...ugh! -- it's lyrics telling a story about being examined in front of a roomful of medical students, with lines like, "Put on the rubber gloves!" and "This might hurt a bit..." "Valentine For Jesus" is a slow, beautiful, and utterly blasphemous song with layered vocals and some intriguing similes. Overall, though, all of the songs are entertaining and well-crafted. Ilsa von Bulow and Xavier Dietrich II (who wrote the lyrics and the music, respectively) thanked their mentor, John Zewizz of Sleep Chamber, in the liner notes. I suppose that if you're a fan of Sleep Chamber, you would most likely enjoy Women of Sodom as well. Both bands share the same sexually "deviant" idiom.

Have you had your enema today? When you hear the Doctor's song, you'll be ready for one! If you love enema's, you'll love Ilsa. The haunting lyrics, vocals, and background sounds from the show make this CD a scene collector's item.

The Watersports song is the perfect tonic for any lowlife who needs to be humiliated and degraded. So, get down on your knees and pay homage when this tune comes on.

Nightmare on Dyke Street and Behind the Door emphasize the ironic frustration of the slave who must watch while two Women get it on. Manwhich and The Cage portray the horrifying experience of the male victim in the hands of cruel and assertive Women. Finally, those who have avoided church for years will find a hymn in Valentine for Jesus.

So, what are you waiting for? Get off your butt and get down to your record store so you can start serving Ilsa now. And remember: you are nothing!
