About the Artist
Edison and Hirsch met in 1999 at Edison's Show-On Studios in Tokyo on a job for Honda Motors. Although they have collectively writen, produced or performed literally hundreds of English-language TV and radio commercials in Japan over the years, this was the first time for the pair to work together. While continuing their individual careers, Edison and Hirsch have collaborated on several commercial projects since then; the most notable perhaps is the theme for Starcom Worldwide, the brand image maker of advertising conglomerate Leo Burnett/D'Arcy/Dentsu/Publicis.Edison and Hirsch have formed Gaijin Music (meaning alien and pronounced "guy gene" ) and Windstone Music with an eye to producing and marketing songs for film and TV markets worldwide. Maintaining offices and studios in Tokyo can leave precious little time to pursue personal interests, and while they regret they don't have the luxury to just Òlock the doorsÓ and define a sound, they are pleased with the positive image and strong performances on Native Son . They hope you agree!

Edison, a Japanese native, was given his western name on his first visit to the United States. His reputation as an accomplished producer, writer and arranger grew with recording projects for Buddy Miles, Rufus Thomas and Russ Kunkle in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu. Upon his return to Tokyo, Edison is in demand at Warner, Victor and Sony, collaborating, writing and producing some fifteen major releases to date. He has also scored a major Japanese film release and continues to collaborate with other artists from across the musical spectrum.

Hirsch is a California native and, as is typical of the American melting pot, is of Spanish, Irish, Norse, French, English and Navajo decent. Lonnie has always preferred live audiences and has toured with several groups over the years that have taken him from San Diego to Anchorage and from Honolulu to Tokyo. This exposed him to a variety of musical styles from Blues to Latin, Soul and Country. He has shared the stage with such notorious characters as Dixie Hatfield, Hank Williams Jr. and Johnny Paycheck. He currently maintains two households, spending spring and summer in Sacramento, California and fall and winter inTokyo where he is in demand as a vocalist, lyricist, narrator, copywriter and editor.

An Underrated, Infectious Album.......2006-12-14

THE JUDYBATS deserved so much more attention for this album than they received. If you enjoyed fun, irreverant songs from alternative bands of the late 80s and early 90s like THE SMITHS, JAMES, THE LEMONHEADS, THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS, and BARENAKED LADIES then do yourself a favor and buy this album.

NATIVE SON kicks off with a few infectious, up-tempo tunes that will get your head bobbing - great for getting your fingers thumping on the steering wheel or generating a bee-boppin' mood on a walk.

The singing and harmonies fuse perfectly with the instrumentals and every song includes outstanding guitar work. In fact, the guitar provides an ever-present, though by no means overpowering, melody. The way the guitars work together with the vocals provides a lot of character to each song. This is far more than your three-chord standard.

While the overall tone of the album to me is effervescent and peppy, perfect for a walk, jog, or drive on a sunny day, THE JUDYBATS also deliver a couple slower, more contemplative songs that are no less entertaining in their way.

Over 15 years later, NATIVE SON makes regular appearances in my playlists. The entire album is thoroughly entertaining, but if you're looking to sample just a few tracks before you commit to the entire album, I'd recommend the title track, Native Son, In Like With You, She Lives, Convalescing in Spain, or just about any other track on the album.

NATIVE SON is truly a hidden treasure from the early 90s alt scene.

An overlooked gem.......2006-07-28

This is an outstanding album, one of my favorites of the early '90s. Sadly, this band was not well-known, and did not get the attention they merited. Jeff's voice is strong and easily identifiable; the melodies and guitar riffs are strong, with layered harmonies; Pam provides wonderful textures with keyboard and violin; the lyrics are unusual, amusing, and thoughtful. "Daylight" is my favorite track, due to its catchy rhythm, lyric, and harmonies; "Native Son" and "Perfumed Lies" are also standouts, but all tracks are strong. Fans of The Smiths ought to have devoured this album, which is the Judybats' finest effort.
