Blues Babe
Editorial Reviews
Billy Thinnes- Mr. Thinnes is a freelance writer whose work has appeared on websites like jambase.com and digitalcity.com/neworleans.
This solid collection of original material should certainly punch Olgas ticket as a debutante at the roots rock ball.
Jim Beam® Bourbon , Benefiting Emerging Artist in Music, October 2002
Olga breaths another generation of life into this deep-south tradition of setting the indescribable to a sultry sound.
Album Description
Blues Babe is the sparse yet fulfilling work of a low-fi princess. Recorded by Olga in her New Orleans bedroom, the album pulls from a bag of influences collected across the rural Mississippi Delta with occasional pit-stops into the metropolitan areas of Memphis and Nashville.

Customer Reviews:
Great gems from musicals that dissapeared.......2004-11-30
Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.
Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".
Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.
For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.
some gold mixed with dross.......2003-12-21
Some of these songs desrve to be unsung. But then you get a showstopper like Sherry and you wonder how could this show have flopped? That number alone makes this cd worth purchasing.I also enjoyed Marvin Hamlisch's toe tapping title song - Smile. There are also a few other lovely melodies which makes this cd a nice addition to a Broadway collection.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Band, Decent Collection.......2005-12-18
The Mississippi Sheiks are the missing link, so to speak, between what we now know as Delta Blues and traditional rural black stringband music. Their songs have been recorded by everyone from the Camp Creek Boys to Bob Wills to the Grateful Dead (Stop and Listen Blues is the predecessor to Smokestack Lightnin').
Although our romantic notions of early Delta blues want to make Robert Johnson the hero of this time period in American music, Johnson was actually quite unpopular in his time. The Sheiks were the reigning heroes and should be remembered as such.
Fiddle players should listen carefully to this record, as Lonnie Chatmon uses several odd cross-tunings that aren't common in any fiddle repertoire. Guitar players should simply sit in awe at Bo Chatmon's (aka Bo Carter's) guitar playing on the selected tracks where he sits in, and marvel at the sparse delicacy of Walter Vinson's guitar playing.
The Mississippi Sheiks were truly their own chapter in American music history, there was no other band quite like them nor will there ever be. This record is a fairly nice representation of them. I do regret that the original Stop and Listen blues was not included, but the less charming Stop and Listen #2 (the sequel, so to speak) was, instead. If you can, get a collection with Stop and Listen Blues on it (the original one!).

Thank goodness Taj Majal recorded Algia Mae. Her lyrics are natural, her guitar and banjo are as good a piece of solo musicianship as any other blues artist ever layed down. I've bought extra copies for many friends.......... they are now a lot more happy with their lives.

Album Description
Full title - Dancin' With Nobody But You Babe. Singer/songwriter/producer Clarence Reid had multiple musical personalities. One was a Southern soul singer recording for Atlantic Records' Alston imprint. His charting singles were 1969's 'Nobody But You Babe' (from this album), 1972's 'Good Old Days' & 1974's 'Funky Party'. He co-wrote hits for Betty Wright ('Girls Can't Do What The Guys Do'), the million-selling 'Clean Up Woman,' 'Baby Sitter,' & 'Let Me Be Your Lovemaker.' In his other persona, he performed wild X-rated material under the pseudonym Blowfly. This 1969 Alston/Atlantic album makes its CD debut here. Like other classic r&b-soul albums of the time, this Clarence Reid work features the legendary Memphis Horns & some classic tunes like Tony Joe White's 'Polk Salad Annie', Smokey Robinson's 'Shop Around', the Beatles' 'Get Back', & Curtis Mayfield's 'I've Been Trying'

A LONG LOST GEM BY GUITAR GREAT ROY BUCHANAN.......2003-04-16
This CD is one of the long lost gems by the legendary great master of the guitar Roy Buchanan. My Babe /ERA is not hard to
find anymore thanks to K-Tel International who are distributing the killer CD. Released in '80 originally on Waterhouse
Records, this material shows Roy covering once again a vast musical landscape. There's some Funk, instrumental Blues, Rock
and Ballads only the way this guitar genius could interpret the them. Roy gives the Little Walter classic "My Babe" a searing
workout and his beautiful instrumental of "Secret Love" touches into the depths of this torched artists soul. Nobody who ever
picked up guitar in the limelight speaks the guitar vocabulary like this guy! Other show stoppers include two more
instrumentals by him. "My Sonata" is just marvelous and haunting at the same time and the Blues "Blues For Gary" is breath
taking! He leaves no stone unturned! Throughout these recordings he is backed by a variety of drummers (3) and keysman &
vocalist Paul Jacobs along with bassist Gordon Johnson on all cuts. A must for a real guitar lover!

Essential and fun listening.......2006-05-21
If you are a fan of rough and ready country bluesmen like Charlie Patton, Bukka White, Tommy Johnson, and Son House you will love this album. Babe Stovall deserved the same level of acclaim as other 60s "discoveries" like Fred McDowell and Mance Lipscomb. The liner notes go into why that didn't really happen and give some funny anecdotes about his irrascible character. Babe's voice has a gruff charm and his songs are all great, his versions of standards like Good Morning Little Schoolgirl are unique and sound like no one but him. This is the best blues release I've heard in years.

Customer Reviews:
Bo Carter - King of Dirty Blues.......2005-12-24
This Yazoo release compiles fourteen sides by Bo Carter recorded between 1931 and 1940. Carter was an extremely prolific recording artist, and "Twist it Babe" is a solid introduction to his body of solo work. His originality and virtousity on the guitar, often overlooked due to his propensity for double entendre, put him technically on par with other "uncopyable" bluesmen such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, and Robert Pete Williams.
If you have a problem with "dirty blues", then this album, and Bo Carter all together, are really not for you, however, he is a master of country blues guitar and this album is a great place to start. The production and sound are as clean and clear as you will find in the 1930's.
The listener of this album will witness his utter disregard for standard blues phrasing and cliched licks. You will discover through repeated listening that his seemingly simple and catchy songs are actually quite complex arrangements, featuring skills and techniques that remain absolutely unique within the blues vernacular. The combination of melodic, harmonic genius and command of counterpoint, and polyrhythmic bass lines are facilitated by the use of all five fingers of his picking hand, and five different tunings on the guitar.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Marvelous guitar playing.......1998-12-27
Bo Carter is the perfect example of doing something simple exactly right. While his technique was modest, his melodic imagination was amazing fertile. The impeccable musical sense of his accompaniments completely overshadows the often unimaginative lyrics of the songs. He either liked what could best be called "racy" material, or he was typed as a party record artist. He fingerpicked, mostly in open tunings. While he didn't have the technique of Blind Blake or Reverend Gary Davis, his accompaniments featured an amazing lack of recycled licks and seemed to come more from the song than the chord progession.
