Product Description

Beautiful blend of traditional and original Christmas tunes by Bill Leslie whose previous release "Peaceful Journey" ranked number one on the world music charts in December, 2004. Acoustic instrumentation is a rich combination of guitar, grand piano, cello, violin, flute, Celtic whistle and hammered dulcimer. Music critic R.J. Lannan has described Leslie's music as "glorious" and one of "incredible composition." Bill sings three vocals on this album including the haunting original "Road to Bethlehem."

5 out of 5 stars "Christmas in Carolina" Just 'Round the Bend.......2005-11-30

When you listen to Bill Leslie's "Christmas in Carolina" CD, you can't help but wonder if the miraculous Christian heritage events surrounding the birth of Jesus might have occurred just around the bend or down the road a piece. That's because Leslie and his harmonious entourage of instrumentalists and vocalists have succeeded in crafting a truly remarkable portrait of the very legacy of Christmas as it affects the individual believer, casting reflections from the wonderous story's setting in ancient Bethlehem to the wintry sunrises and sunsets of the New World.

With a brilliant ensemble combining strings, winds, piano and guitars, the singer-songwriter and Raleigh, N.C., television broadcast journalist adds a good measure of home-cooking to this remarkable musical journey. In "Christmas in Carolina," Bill Leslie and his supporting cast offer us a stirring sequence of songs and instrumentals connecting the threads of personal experiences from the Christmastime season with a sprinkling of distinctive interpretations of traditional seasonal favorites along the way.

Cellist Clark Wang and violinists Sherry Buchheit and Jennifer Curtis bring the life-breath of string sounds to the orchestration, flavored as well by skyward flute passages by Linda Metz, a nifty guest guitar solo on the title song, "Christmas in Carolina," by Brent Cotten, percussion touches by Will Leslie, additonal vocals by Marty Suttle and augmented most distinctively by the piano interpretations of traditional favorites by Bill Covington. Add a sparkling array of Leslie's Celtic whistles to this platform, highlighted by an awakening, Lightfoot-gone-South, if you will, vocal reach of the singer-songwriter, and you'll no doubt be wanting to take this CD out for a test drive via sled or horseback at the first opportunity.

If you didn't know that Leslie himself is providing the lilting Celtic whistle passages heard around the bends of this naturalist and spiritual Appalachian and Blue Ridge excursion, you might think that these songs were composed way across the seas in one of those Scottish coves or in an Irish coastal hamlet from which many a journey to America has emanated through the centuries. But when you add to this glow and mystique from distant musical homelands the unmistakably Southern regional flavoring of the fine guitar figures Leslie adds to these blends of voices and instruments, then you realize that "Christmas in Carolina" is offering us a rare chance to hear the wonder of the great Christian harkening toward the very coming of Jesus from that landscape of the Israel of old yet soothingly brushed with a back-country touch from all the neighborhoods back home. Thus is given to this miracle from afar a relevance known to all who have experienced that familiar crossing from the next ridge over, yielding a marvelous meandering through the Carolina country, adaptable quite naturally to all the hills and plains across the land, with the compelling artistic imprint of the Christmas experience enchantingly evident at every stop along the way.

christmas in carolina - bill leslie
a review

Bill acceded to my wishes by including more vocals on this CD, including a definitive Sweet Little Jesus Boy that communicates with understated voice and guitar the deep and poignant message of this song. The other vocals are drawn from songs Bill wrote for his home church for the lighting of the Advent candles.
They too have a profundity that requires listening to the words attentively - and musically they're graced by the angelic harmonies of Marty Suttle. Road to Bethlehem will lift you to new heights.
Bill's lifelong friend, pianist Bill Covington's uniquely fresh arrangements of Silent Night, Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming, and The First Noel will delight anyone who is looking for "Christmassy" music.
The rest of the varied collection might better be labeled as a spiritual offering from the heart of Bill. As always, the songs evoke images of his beloved home state of North Carolina, with echoes of his Celtic ancestry.. delicately intertwining guitar, Celtic whistle, violin - occasionally hammered dulcimer and synthesizer. Bill has a remarkable gift for melody and how to reweave it.
His music is soothing to the soul. But turn it up now and then to hear marvelous touches you missed the first several times you listened.
This CD will have a long shelf life. I'm thinking I'll be pulling it out at Easter, Pentecost, All Saints Day, and surely next year at Advent.
If you seek to draw closer to God at Christmas, Bill is near to God's heart and you can hear it, inspiringly!

    5 out of 5 stars Getz is a treasure........2004-03-14

Kerry Getz writes and performs beautiful, thought-provoking songs about relationships. "Inhale" is a must-hear. Although Getz doesn't have major-label backing, her talent is evident to anyone who has heard her CDs or seen her perform.

My two favorite Getz CDs are "Live at the Galaxy" (just Kerry and her guitar) and "Apollo."

5 out of 5 stars THIS KERRY IS NO MYTH.......2003-05-21

A premiere CD, one of the finest collections of original material to come along in years. From the deeply introspective strains of "Inhale" and "Beautiful to You" to the descriptive and intriguing "Cyclone" and "This Summer Afternoon," Kerry delivers a powerful package that takes the listener on a sweet and melancholy journey. This is a MUST for all fans of original music that makes you think and examine yourself - you're in good hands with Kerry Getz!

5 out of 5 stars Great voice and songwriting range, Kerry is genius.......2003-05-18

Great pop songs, sensational voice. Kerry can sing anything, but fortunately she writes emotional, intelligent songs to make full use of her voice. Her first CD shows her wide range of songwriting skills, from painful ballads, to epic story-telling, to balls-out rockers. Kerry even sings her sad love songs with a self-aware wit that lifts them above conventional weepy radio ballads. It's too bad the over-lush production hides her brilliant acoustic guitar playing, because those of us who have followed her career in local coffee shops know just how talented she really is.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music By a Talented Artist.......2003-05-15

This album is the perfect album for Sunday morning, while sipping the cup of coffee or enjoying brunch. Do not put this album on as "background" music: you will miss out on the experience of truly enjoyable, insightful, heartfelt, sincere and innovative songwriting, singing and playing.
Kerry's mastery of guitar and hold-on-for-the-ride vocal stylings bring this CD to life.
It's like Paul Simon's "Graceland": the third listening brings you in so close that you can't let go.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent Album.......2003-05-14

Kerry's voice & her songwriting are intriguing yet accessable. The emotional textures & images remain with me. I was especially touched by the song "INHALE".

5 out of 5 stars Gideon Freudmann, eh?.......2006-03-14

How to describe Gideon Freudmann?? Two words, my friend:

        ELECTRIC. CELLO.

If that sounds cool to you, then you won't be disappointed with this.

Jazzy, funky, weirdo instrumental music. Sort of a cross between Yo-Yo Ma and Frank Zappa...

3 out of 5 stars Unique and peppy.......2000-04-28

I have a hard time rating this one. Its utterly unique sound deserves five stars, but I have to wonder how well it will wear over time. Dr. Didg's _Out of the Woods_ also leaped out of the speakers at me and demanded to be owned; I still get a kick out of it now and then, but it's not the sort of thing I listen to regularly. _Hologram Crackers_ may turn out the same.

But boy is it COOL the first time you put it on! This is an album with which to astound your friends. Gideon Freudmann plays an electrified cello (its skinny, non-chambered body with arms that loop up from the bottom and down from the neck resembles nothing so much as an old-fashioned ship anchor) that can harmonize and sing with itself through the magic of digital delay and tape loops. He'll often lay down a punchy rhythm track or two which repeats many times while he has the cello sing above it on the upper registers.

Freudmann calls his music "cello bop," which is as good a term as any. There's a bit of blues in the mix, and a lot of boogie. The title track really hustles; I've noticed it getting incidental airplay on National Public Radio news. "Robin Hood Changes His Oil" features melodic quotes from "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

Some of the sounds he gets are incredibly strange: the rhythm line to "Cocoon" makes one think of large droplets of cello strings dripping in a distant culvert. The album drags a bit at times; I didn't get much out of the slower cuts such as "Flume/April March" or "Haunted Merry-Go-Round."

But Freudmann's clearly found a musical niche all his own in today's rich variety of musical offerings. I just hesitate to give it more stars because I'm not sure whether the musical appeal outweighs (or will outlast) the novelty.

5 out of 5 stars Not Your Average Yo Yo Ma..........2000-01-18

I had never heard of this guy until Saturday, when a TRUE friend asked me to one of his concerts. I was Mesmerized for the first hour, RAN to the concession to buy this disk during intermission, and became a completely devoted fan before the second hour ended. The music is somewhere between Bela Fleck and the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, with a little sprinkle of Stephanie Grapelli and Chronos Quartet. DO NOT FOR ONE SECOND believe that a cello solo has to be a Goldberg Variation or a Farty Chamber Piece. This is Real Different, Seriously Musical Stuff, and Lots of Fun Too! Mr.Freudman thoughtfully lures you into his "Songs" with layer upon layer of Beautiful Electronic Cello Artistry. And it's all done right in front of you with NO OVERDUBBNG. If your taste can be found anywhere between Dan Hicks to the London Symphony, you will cherish this wonderful and timeless recording. Word of Warning: His other Disks have him singing along, and I've not yet warmed up to his lo-fi cheeky/whiny voice. Buy This One First!

The whole record is just one amazingly good song after the next. You can't go wrong with any of Rachael's CD's - but this one happens to contain some extra incredible songs.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing collection of songs..........2004-08-30

"Painting of a Painting" is Rachael's third album. With this album, she continued to develop her artistic creativity and etch a unique niche in the music world. Highlights include "Satellite," "Painting of a Painting," and "Pictures They Took," which won top honors in the pop category of the 2001 John Lennon Songwriting Contest.

2 out of 5 stars Mixed breed of first two CDs.......2001-11-30

Painting of a Painting was basically a combination of "Smashing the Serene(still her best CD)--and Morbid Romantic. The lyrics were ok, none particularly moving, or worth remembering. I did not hum to the tunes like I did for the 1st album. I like Rachael Sage, and her quirkiness is still in her lyrics, but she needs some work done for her next album. I still enjoy Smashing the Serene--which is by far her best album, and I listen to that over and over...

Anyone wanting a new voice to listen to, and can't find one, I highly recommend Smashing the Serene.

5 out of 5 stars More gorgeousness than a gallery of paintings.......2001-04-04

This even, effervescent album (Rachael's third) sparkles; it's creative, contagious, colorful, and complex enough to perfectly backdrop nearly every setting or situation. And, right from the soaring, infectious, bittersweet opening single "Cyanide and Cinnamon," the album is nuanced and balanced enough to suit moods ranging from sheer dejection to utter elation.

Rachael's intricate, imaginative, energetic folky pop, enhanced by her own sprightly piano stylings, reflects a diversity of musical influences; it's catchy stuff with lyrical and melodic hooks and choruses that will stick with you, yet it never disintegrates into the vapid or overly repetitive. Similar to Ani DiFranco, Rachael's vocal capacities are incredibly broad-ranging and versatile; her voice, which has a unique vibrato, is generally higher, sweetly pretty, lilting, and sometimes gravelly or whispery, yet she oftens wields it more fiercely and strongly as well.

Both lyrically (she's a fabulous lyricist) and vocally as well as musically, she resembles the offspring of Ani and Tori Amos, with a dash of Joni Michell (especially on the last four songs and the hidden 14th track); however, she's definitely "her own thing." A certain delicate subtlety prevents her songs from becoming overblown: she doesn't kill a fly with a laser when a flyswatter would suffice, and she roots her poetic and philosophical musings in concrete, earthly details. Above all, unlike many artists, Rachael can be tough, passionate, angry, and sorrowful, yet remains strong and hopeful throughout, never succumbing to cynicism, bitterness, or victimhood.

Rachael explores our relationship and responsibilities to one another, from the vicissitudes of romance to our status as neighbors on a troubled planet. "Among All of G-d's Creatures" is a hauntingly powerful political song that calls mankind (and divinity-kind) on its less attractive tendencies. "Pictures They Took" and "Apology" rock out while honestly delving into those contradictory love/hate pre-or post-breakup feelings, while "I Guess," "Painting of a Painting" and the moving "Footsteps" are intelligent love songs dealing with the puzzling tightrope-walk of attempting to preserve self-integrity and independence while involved in a close relationship.

The value of life, even in its unpleasant or unappreciated aspects or during its rough transitions, is another theme. In the lovely "Seraphim Smile," Rachael realizes in an inspiring, building chorus that the answer to our fear and solitude lies in reaching out to others. The beautiful "Satellite" is a character sketch exploring the alienation between the youthful and the aged and the resulting senses of loneliness and loss on both sides. "Undertow" is about being unwillingly mired in the "linoleum castle" of paralyzing self-pity, depression and doubt, but in general, her outlook is positive: she's a strong person unafraid of the messiness of life--in fact, she embraces it, and motivates listeners to do the same.

In short, this is a totally uplifting, affirming, empowering, engaging and transcendent album that manages to be all about peace and love while remaining smart, grounded, and not sugarcoated. And it's not just intellectually and emotionally stimulating, it just plain sounds gorgeous! Overall, a truly original gem that makes other recordings seem flat. I highly recommend this to anyone, for yourself or as a gift.
