5 out of 5 stars Feel it in the one drop.......2005-02-22

This is a great compilation of songs that belong on Legend, so if you already own Legend you should probably get this. The songs here are from albums not included on Legend like Natty Dread, Survival and Rastaman Vibration. Those 3 albums are amoung Bob and the Wailers' best works and they should definitely be heard. The instrumentation here is just as good as on legend, and the songs here are fan and collector favorites so you will be sure to enoy them as well. I am glad that Natural Mystic has continued to help the legend live on, and if you like Legend get this cd and you will be well on your way to a fine Wailers collection.

5 out of 5 stars Mystic Marley !.......2004-11-28

Natural Mystic is by far one of the best Bob Marley collections, along with Legend & Songs of Freedom. Bob Marley fans certainly won't be dissappointed with Natural Mystic. Bob inspires us as he sings his songs of love, hope, peace, and freedom. The message is certainly clear and evident in each of these songs.

One can certainly see where Marley gets the title "King of Reggae" from as he chants down on songs like "Easy Skanking", "Iron Lion Zion" "Pimper's Paradise" "So Much Trouble in the World". Bob also does an awesome rendition of Curtis "the Pioneer" Mayfield's song "Keep on Movin." And last but certainly not least the heartfelt "Time Will Tell". This is a must have for all Marley fans both young and old. The Legend continues as our Natural Mystic's voice continues to echo.

Though the shell is gone, the spirit remains as the Legacy continues and the message remains the same. Bob, thank you for your Songs of Freedom. R.I.P., Our Lion from Zion!

5 out of 5 stars Truly timeless.......2004-02-06

I've owned this CD for some time, now and I'd have to agree that Bob Marley's music should be denied by no one. I pop it into my CD player in the car and at home and can't help but turn it up after the first couple of tracks play through. The music is mass-appealing and his voice is unmatched. If you don't own any of Marley's CD's yet this would be a great first, as is "Legend". It is a necessity for anyone who appreciates great music and lyrics that are fulfilling and passionate.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT COMPILATION.......2002-07-27

This is a great Bob Marley compilation. I would argue that it is as good a Legend and most certainly a great companion piece to that disc. It is more politidal but don't let that scare you. The songs go down so smoothly!

5 out of 5 stars splifferific!.......2001-06-27

This CD makes me want to dance when i hear. It has impacted me in so many ways like so much of his CDs. Who cares what kind of music you like this cd is for everyone! everyone would love this cd so get it! got it?

5 out of 5 stars Gone, But Not Forgotten.......2006-07-27

I had the privelige of seeing Starz when they were first on the rise. A beautiful pre-spring day in March 1977,'Cherry Baby' was starting to get noticed, and I had third row seats to Starz as the opening band to Bob Seger on the 'Night Moves' tour. Starz came on at 8:00, opening with 'Violation' blew our minds, eyes and ears for the next hour and a half, and I feel they could have kept going if not for the fact that drummer Joe Dube collapsed on his drums and had to be carried off the stage in what was the only disappointing moment of the evening. This band had something that most people were not able to fully appreciate....THEY CAME TO ROCK!!!!! No fancy light shows or special effects, just being great for who they were and how they sounded---a band that was not given the time or attention they deserved.

5 out of 5 stars A Blast From the Past.......2002-01-16

I have been raised on rock. When Starz came out in the mid 70's, it was a breath of fresh air. These boys rock. For anybody who doesn't really knows this band, the have the ... to roll a 4 track recorder with them and record their live show, then put it out as an album. That takes guts. This album represents some of their finer songs. Although there really isn't any song they have done I have disliked... Get the CD and see for yourself. "GOTTA ROCK 6 TIMES ALRIGHT!

5 out of 5 stars live with styx and frampton.......2001-03-22

I saw Starz live with Styx and Peter Frampton a few months before Frampton made it big in the mid-70s. I hoped that Starz would make it big, but Styx made it bigger. Oh well, anyway its a pleasant high school memory from the 70s.

5 out of 5 stars Starz Rocks Live..The Old Fashioned Way..........2000-10-05

This CD is a great compilation of Starz early rock tunes...Pull The Plug is a mesmorizing live tune, much like Cheap Trick's "Need Your Love". Boys In Action, Subway Terror, Live Wire, Cherry Baby and the rest are solid amped rockers that make this one terrific purchase! For even more, the "Brightest Starz Anthology" has all the great material from the studio, that rocks every bit as much as the live CD (Amazon just delivered mine today...It's now available) If you're a fan, buy these CDs. If you like to rock... these deliver! SJ from So. Cal.

5 out of 5 stars Starz Rocks Live, and finally on CD!.......2000-09-30

After recording my albums to cassette, I thought I'd never be able to hear Starz on CD. This CD has top quality sound, and the song selections are excellent. These underated rockers deserve to be heard. When the anthology CD is available, I will be at the head of the line. Great memories have been rekindled thanks to this CD. If you like rock at it's roots, buy this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2007-02-07

I though I owned all the Halloween music to be found. But this one has some new ones and old ones done differently. I highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Good memories spoilt.......2006-12-27

The title of the CD is "Scary" but don't be fooled. The only thing frightening is that someone might be suckered by the reputation of the conductor and some fond childhood memories into spending good money for this crud.

While there are a couple of admirable tributes to classic horror theme songs, the cheesy vocals on Addams Family, Ghostbusters, Monster Mash, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Beware of the Blob and Thriller relegate this disc to the trash bin.

Instead of this, I'd recommend Nosferatu (James Bernard), Chiller (Cincinnati Pops), Fantastic Journey (Cincinnati Pops, also - more SciFi than horror, though) and Classics From the Crypt (RCA Victor). All available here.

4 out of 5 stars Superbly Bizarre.......2005-03-03

All I can say is wow- kitschy and delightful in a way. Though the "Thriller" is disturbing. But how can you deny the "Killer Tomatoes"? I mean, how can you??

4 out of 5 stars Interesting album.......2000-09-22

Hey..he was from P.I.L.? (I was just reading the last review). Anyway..i cant give it 5 stars. The album is sloppy, singing is pretty weak...but yes, you have a fusion of many different styles with unnuque bass playing throughout.

Blueberry Hill is the wackiest and most interesting version Ive heard.

Obviously, Jah Wobble has talent, working with the likes of Eno, ex-Can memberds, P.I.L, B.A.D., and the whole Laswell thing happening in his later career...and im probably missing something here..not noiing too much about him.

Dubheads will enjoy the bass dub stylings on this unique album.

Betrayal, arguably, is the week track...so sample perhaps Blueberry.

Of course..lotsa deep bass.

5 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL!!!!.......1999-08-21

If you liked Public Image Ltd. when they were good (with Keith Levene & Jah Wobble)..but thought they could be a little more "out there" and perhaps more "cheerful and fun" without John Lydon's insistant whine..this album is for you..a document of when punk/dub/experimental/pop stuff meshed into one...this album is a complete listening experience..and what a joy it is..all the tracks are highlights..especially "pineapple," "today is the first day.." "betrayal," "dan mcarthur," and the HILARIOUS "dreak lock don't deal in wedlock" with don letts of Big Audio Dynamite fame..BUT IT NOW..It's priced to sell like hotcakes!

5 out of 5 stars Impossible to classify: a real musical extravaganza.......2007-05-21

After listening to this incredible utterly impossible-to-classify musical, one wonders what it is that makes such mediocre scores like "Wicked" a complete success and what makes a brilliant hilarious musical experience different from anything you've heard before in the genre a failure. It seems that this work is getting known little by little ironically for having been a complete flop after a short life on stage. In a recent interview Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar stated that children from a very early age usually dream of becoming astronauts, doctors, football players or writers but that if any child would tell his parents: "I'd like to become a critic in the future", the urgent thing to do would be to take this child to the psychiatrist. My personal piece of advice is never trust critics when their negative reviews are so extremely harsh as they were with this musical. And who knows, maybe one day it will be back on stage for the pleasure of the audience and the bewilderment of the vocational critics.

5 out of 5 stars Best Comedy Musical Ever!!.......2004-06-29

One of the worst travesties in London theatrical history occurred when this show closed after its short run at the Piccadilly Theatre Savaged by the critics (well most of them) but loved by the audiences this enthralling musical lampoon of Melvilles epic as staged by a "St Trinians" school clone never fails to please. From the opening "Parents Day" which explains the staging of the musical through the wonderful "Forbidden Seas", "Gypsy Dancer" and the fantastically vocal "Man Happens" the lyrics at times bring tears to you eyes for all the right reasons. The only regret is that all the visual gags and mock amateur staging that accompany the songs has been lost. Men playing schoolgirls playing sailors.... hmmm I can see why the snooty critics saw it as a soft target but 12 years on the legend endures. Hopefully Mr Mackintosh will have enough faith in his creation to restage it at some point in the future and until then we at least have a fitting memorial in this recording.

    5 out of 5 stars A Happy Theatrical Momento.......2004-05-20

The only problem with this recording is that the listener can't see the energy and wonderful enthusiasm of the cast along with the incredibly imaginative staging. I had the pleasure of seeing this production three times in its far too short life at the Piccadilly Theatre, and I was enthralled each time. Yes, this is a live recording, and some of the production values aren't as good as they were in the five song CD "single" released early in the run, but it's a wonderful tribute to a show that was extremely unfairly savaged by the stuffy London critics who couldn't stand Melville's dirge being lampooned. I particularly love "Elija's Prophecy" in which he states that the Pequod will sink done as a horn pipe. The show was done with tongue firmly implanted in cheek, and there was plenty of cheek there. It's also a shame that listeners can't see the opening of the second act which was a 3-D extravaganza. What joy! The cast is young, except for Tony Monoply as the head mistress, and vibrant. The music is excellent and wonderfully well performed.

    5 out of 5 stars Moby Dick -a whale of a show.......2001-11-28

This CD brings back great memories, i saw the show twice and was there on the night of the recording. One reviewer called the show "Carry on St Trinians the Musical" and that just about sums it up, a saucy, joyous, funny show with an infectious score and a young attractive and very talented cast. It is a shame you don't get to hear all of Sylvia's wickedly accurate impressions (Bette Davis,Katherine Hepburn,to name but two)but the sheer vibrancy of the evening can be gauged by the enthusiastic cast and response of the audience. This show outstrips, Les Miz, Cats , Phantom - the lot, 10 years on I still wish i could book a ticket and see the whole thing live, until then i shall keep playing the CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Spit take in progress . . ........2001-08-31

This album is just too funny. I can't help laughing at lines such
as "OBSESSION ISN'T JUST A PERFUME!" and "I know you were SO looking forward to raising a family, but my LEG! EVERYthing!" It's a great album. I love it. And to those four brave critics who stuck with this show as well as Les Miz, way to go and KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

    4 out of 5 stars Well, you know . . . .......2007-05-16

Well, you know, Charlie Parker recorded with strings on Verve and then (recently) somebody re-did Ray Charles' vocal tracks with a modernized Basie Band. Technology has always had its hand in music ever since there has been electricity. But I feel like all of these things add to the artists' work. They don't take away from it. Mr. Williams' lyrics remain pure and true no matter what the instrumentation.

4 out of 5 stars THE album if you like the songwriter but question the singer.......2005-04-04

This is just the CD for people who want to appreciate the major contribution that Hank Williams Sr. made to country music as a songwriter, but who may have difficulty swallowing the twangy, less-than-full-bodied voice with which he hit the top of the country charts in the early 50s. (I am one of those folks.) That voice starkly dominates his original recordings, with minimal instrumental backup (by today's standards) and no vocal backup. The recordings on this album, by overdubbing, add the backup music and vocal that is required to make his singing more palatable to today's listeners who aren't Hank Williams purists. I rate this album 4 rather than 5 because -- as other reviewers have commented -- the song selection is curious. (Hank had 36 top 10 hits, of which only 5 are on this 12-track CD; why devote space on this album to, e.g., the "Men with Broken Hearts" soliloquy, rather than to one of the nine missing No. 1 singles?)

2 out of 5 stars Maybe for the completist.......2005-01-29

The strings take away from the starkness of the originals and add a layer of hokiness. What's up with the overly busy slapback guitar on "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"? The schmaltzy backup singers? The unnecessary string flourishes? Not horrible, but I'd avoid unless you're a completist wanting to hear these classics in a new light.

4 out of 5 stars Quality and fun.......2004-06-26

I can not understand why so many Hank fans hate packages such as this one. This was done out of respect for the greatness of Hank Williams. If you sincerly listen to the selections you will realize that the music only proclaims Hank's great singing and song writing abilities. You see that had he been an artist in another era he still would have been better than anyone else of that time frame, has he was in his own. What I found so amazing is how well such professional arangements actually complement Hank's natural Alabama draw. There is something really neat in the contrast. I own "The Complete Hank Williams", "The Original Singles Collection", and "The Health and Happiness Shows" on cd. I as well own the "Three Hanks" with Sr., Jr. and the 3rd. I love Hank Williams, and this is a fun, quality disc to own. It actually makes more sense to hear Hank with strings than to hear him do a duet of "Tear in my Beer" with Hank Jr. That is something that was never going to happen naturally. At least having strings overdubbed on you original vocal recodings, initial releases or not, is something that started not long after Hank's death.

4 out of 5 stars A definite keeper! Where are the other 3 volumes? Hint!.......2003-06-23

With all of the trash talk this particular release has gotten over the years, it is really quite astounding to see it re-issued on CD approximately 30 years after it's initial release on various analog media (LP and 8-track for sure).

This was a period in which the Nashville Sound had became the going thing. Every major artist with few exceptions followed the basic format outlined in this release-silky strings, nice laid back lead guitar, smooth back-up vocals, a little piano and a nice country voice sitting right up front! Not too amazingly, the Williams' catalog had stayed quite popular in not only Hank's original versions, but also stereo overdubbed versions with additional instrumentation augmenting, but never drowning or burying, the Drifting Cowboys, overdubs of "demo" recordings, and the covering of much of Hank's discography by artists as diverse as Ray Charles, Del Shannon, Floyd Cramer and Jack Scott. So, with that basic forethought in mind, MGM records undertook a whole new approach to the greatest singer who ever lived.

Again, this is basic Nashville Sound stuff. The original band (usually the Drifting Cowboys) are pretty much buried under the new background offered by MGM. It really works out quite well and shows that Hank would have been at home with the Nashville Sound and would have been ruling the charts.

One big complaint, and this is really revealed with the digital media format, is MGM decided to "fade" Hank's voice to ease the strain of studio musicians dubbing over the Drifting Cowboys. You'll hear Hank's voice fade out on several selections and "fade" back in. Most selections do not present this problem, but a couple do.

The shocking thing is that MGM chose NOT to showcase all big hits. No less than 5 of these were minor entries into the discography (I'm So Lonesome was the "B" side of "My Bucket's Got A Hole In It" and never charted in it's original incarnation-even this version failed to break top 40) and the remaining 7, with the exception of "Lovesick Blues" and "Wedding Bells" were not the BIGGEST hits-many of those waited until future volumes and some never made it ("Hey, Good Lookin'", "I Saw the Light", etc.).

The ruination of the series was "Hank Williams and Strings Vol. III" in which on some selections you could hear the original band and then they would all of a sudden drop out with only the new band remaining, plus the song selection was getting poor.

In closing, the original title of the LP was "The Legend Lives Anew-Hank Williams w/ Strings" not "Hank Williams w/ Strings Vol. I" as stated by a previous reviewer.
