Hard Candy is, most certainly, just another Counting Crows album. But it's difficult to imagine that there's ever going to be too many. For a band that formed during the grunge-dominated early 1990s, Counting Crows did something remarkably brave--though they helped themselves to the same legacy of 1970s and '80s FM radio rock as the Seattle groups, they chose not to subvert it with any punk influences. Counting Crows were determined to play Steve Miller and Tom Petty and Bruce Hornsby at their own game, and Hard Candy is the fourth astonishing album that has resulted. Counting Crows have now settled into a template with which they clearly feel comfortable--simple but elaborately orchestrated songs, buffed and polished to a high sheen, which serve as a glittering backdrop to Adam Duritz's lyrics. These, now as ever, are chiefly concerned with excitingly unattainable women and the roads he travels to get to or away from them. He tantalizes, as he often does, with specific names and places, but is never so solipsistic that the songs are robbed of a universal appeal. --Andrew Mueller

I thought I knew what music was, man. That's all I have to say. I thought I knew what music was.

5 out of 5 stars Never Gets Old.......2006-05-28

When you're a parent, it's that rare and special CD that your kids can wear out *for* you. HARD CANDY is definitely a favorite of both my children. First, my now seven year old fell in love with BUTTERFLY IN REVERSE (as much as I loved it several years ago, even I'm sick of that one!) She would say, "I'm Mary Ann." Later she proclaimed that Adam Duritz was her best friend. Good girl.

All of that is to say that I have listened to this CD more times than probably many die hard Crows fans (of which I am definitely one!) and most of these tracks still never get old. Although AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER is a true Crows touchstone, for me this is the one that will always hold the most special place in my heart. I highly, highly recommend the CD as one to jump into the Crows experience with--and for older fans who might not have it, don't miss out. A MUST TO OWN!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-11-26

It's not just that i'm a HUGE Counting crows fan. It's just that this album is like ok I'll be honest "AMAZING!!!!!!!!!" I like the way they put some feeling into "Black and Blue" and made a rocker version with Vannesa C. on "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Miami" boy is that amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Still Good.......2005-10-03

For a CD I don't feel is Counting Crow's best effort, this is still a really good album and brings lots of listening enjoyment. Everyone had heard their cover of "Big Yellow Taxi" which is a very strong song, but not the best on the album. Even the debut single from this album, "American Girl" is only average for this disc. Great for any Counting Crows fan.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2005-08-30

Face it folks; if you don't like this music, you're nothing but a god-damned terrorist.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the breed.......2007-04-07

"Narita" has always been my favorite of the Riot albums. While I like every song on the CD, my top picks are "Hot For Love" and "Do It Up". If you like Riot's following release "Fire Down Under", I think you'll enjoy "Narita" as much--or more. I'm surprised that this album isn't as readily available as the others, but it's still worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars As good as "Fire Down Under" ... how did this get overlooked?.......2006-01-30

I don't know why this album is import only, its just as good as Fire Down Under. Amazingly catchy in that early-80s way; a very tight band that kicked down the walls and then was gone (I know the guitarist is still going, but it was over after "Riot Live".

Metal, rock, whatever you want to call it ... this album does what music should: get the blood pumping, heart racing, and sounds great when you're speeding in your car.

4 out of 5 stars Classic 70s Riot.......2005-11-17

After their debut, Rock City, Riot came back with an even stronger album called Narita. For those of you who don't know, Narita is the name of the international airport in Japan just outside of Tokyo. About half the songs on this album are classic and the rest of the songs are decent rockers. My favorites are 49er (cool riff), Kick Down The Wall (great chorus), Here We Come Again (good time rock), Hot For Love (smokin!), and Road Racin' (up-tempo rocker). Mark Reale's guitar playing was always very underrated, as were front man Guy Speranza's vocals. Riot should have gotten much more attention than they did. Mark still continues to put out solid albums. I highly recommend Born In America (1983) and The Brethren Of Long House (1996).

5 out of 5 stars Energy that lasts.......2007-02-12

Morgan's "Candy," like Kenny Dorham's "Quiet Kenny," is the only quartet session by the trumpeter. It wears better than some other things I've been listening to ("The Cooker," "City Lights," "The Gigolo"), with Morgan no less impressive on a restrained, tasteful, meditative "All the Way" than on the up-tempo tracks. Also, this is simply an untouchable rhythm section, with Doug Watkins' bass providing its usual vibrant, "living" pulse and rich but not exaggerated sound. If this one is reissued, I'm hoping it's not as another RVG remaster (the spiking of bass and drums, however welcome to younger ears--or, for that matter, to older ears that have begun to lose sensitivity to low and high frequencies--is not necessarily an improvement). This one sounds fine just as it is (and you can hardly beat the current Amazon price).

5 out of 5 stars Love It!!!.......2006-10-23

This is my fifth Lee Morgan CD and I love it. Pure vintage Lee, no doubt. With each CD, you fall in love all over again, so "Candy" is like over the top, love at first note. My favorite is "All the way" makes you feel like a pat of butter on a hot pan, oh, so, so, so mellow and lovely. The sound quality is crisp and you can hear each distinct musician's intrumental contribution to this delight. I wish Lee Morgan is just as well known as Miles Davis, so I feel sad for people who has not discover him yet. I haven't an extensive Lee collection and I like all of them, but by far this my favorite, so if you are new to the fan club, I highly recoment this for a starter but really all of his albums are great.

4 out of 5 stars Great Record, but.......2006-08-25

despite being advertized as "24bit Digitally Remastered Japanese Limited Edition in an LP-STYLE Slipcase", this is simply the original '87 Non-Remastered release. Therefore a deduction of one star. Please be careful with Product Description, Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Lee Morgan .......2005-10-08

Of all Lee Morgan's many albums, I think this is his best - it at least is the one I like most. It's the only album Morgan made where he's the only horn; he's joined by Sonny Clark (p) Doug Watkins (b) and Art Taylor (d). Tune selection is excellent: the title track and Jimmy Heath's C.T.A. really swing, as does ALL AT ONCE YOU LOVE HER, which contains excellent solo work by Lee. Clark is in fine form. Everything just clicked perfectly on this outing, and it ended up being a great date for everyone. Hard bop at its finest.

5 out of 5 stars Picture Of A Rising Star.......2003-05-03

Lee Morgan was still a youngster when he recorded this album, but you'd never know it. His star was ascending, and this recording captures him during a period when his technical ability, artistic sensibility and youthful exuberance were all present in equal parts. The result? A beautiful album by a trumpete player celebrating his gift with a solid backing band. The perfect introduction to Morgan's music, it stands on its own, highlighting his jazz roots, before he explored his funkier side on albums such as "Cornbread."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Sheer Remastered Classic.........2007-05-18

..one of the toughest live albums of all times. When listening to this remaster, one can actually experience the rush and the excitement of a 70's prime Nugent concert, a true celebration of American Culture.

..When I first played this, i thought that alot of the Nugent banter was going to be edited out, but nope, it was all still there, and still pretty agreeable (especially his trademark "mellow" commentary).

..Perhaps some folkz don't agree with the "political incorrectness" of the Nuge's statements. His music makes up for that. It's obnoxious, loud, and very in-your-face, yet very entertaining. Kinda redneck, Kinda intricate, and ALL very enjoyable...ever the Showman, Mr.Nugent is..

"Double Live..Gonzo!" delivers the goods, whether you enjoy this for the excitement, the banter, or, most importantly, the music.

I highly recommend this to the younger generation, because most concerts nowadays cannot HOLD A CANDLE to the time when this was recorded (back when the party was still very happening, and very swinging!).

..the remastering of this classic, makes it more enjoyable by leaps and bounds. It sounds MUCH more focused, as opposed to the old vinyl and cassette and first-version cd (which, for the exception of the cd, i had all the others) which were very muddy sounding.

5 out of 5 stars Teds Live Classic !!!.......2006-11-27

Thanks to Rock Candy these Ted remasters are being made available "Double Live Gonzo" has much improved sound compared to the old version. The only thing they did was to make it a single disc some editing of the crowd had to be done to make it 1 disc. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

1996 album is their most straight-forward, lacking the art-rock tendencies of their earlier efforts. What is left is a psychedelicized heavy metal, with swirling harmonies & guitar riffs.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars King's X lighter side? Not quite so dark. Still Good!!!.......2007-05-10

Ear Candy was released in stark contrast to the previous King's X album, Dogman which was dark, self-searching and responsive to the negatives in life.

This album begins with "The Train", a lighthearted romp in heavy rock. With this song, King's X seems to find some sunshine after the clouded world of Dogman (which I actually prefer to this album).

The rest of the fare offered is about the same. Lighter, pithier songs; lyrically speaking. Doug, Ty and Jerry still keep the hard rock pounding.

The album as a whole is good with some high and low points, but still very good overall. A definite must have for the King's X faithful. If you are new to the band, try some of their earlier stuff before you grab this one.

4 out of 5 stars One of their more melodic albums .......2006-08-16

King's X released their sixth album, Ear Candy, in 1996. Unlike their previous album, the very heavy Dogman, Ear Candy saw the band go in a more melodic direction. Also worth noting is that Ty Tabor sings more leads than usual (he had no lead vocals on Dogman), and he plays a lot more lead guitar too. The opener "The Train" has been called metal meets psychedelia by many reviewers and that pretty much sums it up. After this track, the tracks primarily fall between melodic and heavy with the emphasis on the former. As for the melodic, most of the tracks are top notch. "(Thinking and Wondering) What I'm Gonna Do" is an awesome track with an almost tribal feel and a very quiet lead vocal from Doug Pinnick while the excellent "Picture" speaks of a family reunion and has a cool ride out similar to their track "The Burning Down." While the band is well known for their excellent harmonies reminiscent of the Beatles, the track "American Cheese", which features lead vocals from drummer Jerry Gaskill, actually sounds like something the Beatles would have written in their prime. Outstanding. Ty Tabor also contributes two gems in the ballad "Life Goes By" and the very catchy "Mississippi Moon", a song that could have been a hit single if given a chance. As for the rockers, "Looking For Love" and "Run", a track which interestingly enough is one of their few to not have any harmonies, are very strong and contain riffs ala Led Zeppelin while "Sometime", not to be confused with the track "Sometimes" from their debut album, Out Of The Silent Planet, is another great song with the band's trademark harmonies. Other tracks like "A Box" and "Fathers" are also very good. The tracks "Lies in the Sand" and "67" are decent but don't touch the rest of the album. All told, another strong album from one of the most enduring and talented rock bands around. Although this is currently out of print, it is worth scoping out.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Album/CD.......2006-07-21

King's X shines through on this 1996 release, boasting their delicious harmonies woven into feel good metal power..not that doom metal, but positive hard rock sound. I fully recommend this CD. AWESOME!

5 out of 5 stars One of their finest work.......2006-05-05

This album is really good it has variety, beautiful arrangements, like acoustic tones, with sutile 12 string bass thumping and a little lap steel hidden. Their vocals are great. 5 out of 5 stars King's X's Rubber Soul.......2006-01-17

This CD is Brilliant. I think most people who don't rate this one high are generally Kings X fans from the Gretchen Goes to Hollywood and Out of the Silent Planet period. This CD is as much of a departure from that period as Rubber Soul and Revolver were from the earlier Beatles recordings. There are no throw-away tunes on this CD. Each song is a jewel. Production is phenomenal. I had to re-check the cover a few times to make sure George Martin wasn't listed. There is a lot of experimentation with different sounds. Sometimes that can be a bad thing, but on Ear Candy all the experimentation serves the song, and is integral to the composition of the individual tracks. No gimmicks. As for Ty Tabor, he is not known for playing many wasted notes, but on Ear Candy everything he plays is essential. Take a solo out and you've screwed the song. I think this CD holds his best playing. There is a little more of Ty's vocals and influence on Ear Candy, and Doug comes out a little more subdued, but what you learn from that is how versitile and subtle Doug can be. Jerry's drumming is fabulous, as always. One of rock's most under-rated drummers! If you are new to King's X, I would start here. This CD has the most to offer to the widest audience. Usually that means a crappy album, but occasionally, as with Ear Candy, it means a masterpiece.

      Album Description

It takes a brave man to go it alone, in music or in life, and with Tale Of The Tape, Boston-born Billy Squier showed he had sufficient backbone (and material) to put his own name squarely behind his songs. Produced by prog-professor Eddie Offord and featuring top names from the US East Coast rock fraternity (including guitarist Bruce Kulick, later to join Kiss), Tale...was the record that established Squier as a singer/songwriter/guitarist of genuine stature. True, he would have bigger-selling albums, but none more influential, with 'The Big Beat' now topping the list of most sampled songs ever. Throw in numbers as downright potent as 'Young Girls', Axl Rose fave 'Calley O' & radio hit 'You Should Be High Love' and you have an album that laid the foundations for a multi-platinum career that continues to this day. Fully remastered, and featuring 2 bonus tracks: 'The Music's All Right' (demo) & 'Young Girls' (demo). Rock Candy. 2005.

I misplaced my old vinyl of Tale of the Tape and was glad to get the CD version. It sounds even better than "back in the day". Even though it's been a number of years, I still remember all the words to all the songs. Fantastic!!

      Album Description

Appearing in 1984, seemingly from out of nowhere, Autograph, unsigned at the time, were hand picked by Van Halen to open a mammoth North American concert trek - an accomplishment that quickly led to their inking with industry giant RCA Records and an ensuing hit single, the energetic and infectious, 'Turn Up The Radio' which made the US top 30. Feted and championed by the hard rock cognoscenti (supporters included Motley Crue and Ozzy Osbourne) this Los Angeles based quintet made all the right noises to further enhance their career by packing both melody and muscle into their music. Recording a string of highly successful albums the band peaked with this, their third album, unleashing a beast of significant fire power and songs that would stand not only the test of time but would also improve with age. Produced by Brit legend Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Humble Pie, Cinderella) the album exudes Class-A hard rock all the way. One of the all time great yet largely overlooked albums of the 80's LA scene. Rock Candy. 2006.

3 out of 5 stars I Love Autograph...but this was not their shining moment.......2007-04-13

when it comes to 80s metal,I'm not just a casual fan,I'm a fanatic...if it's got hair and rocks I'm gonna love it
Autograph summed up everything I loved about hair metal, right up there with Poison,Tuff,Pretty Boy Floyd,Enuff Z Nuff and of course Bon Jovi...these are bands that could play their instruments but also write darn good songs

the debut release of Autograph 'Sign In Please' was perfection...the follow up 'That's The Stuff' didn't quite live up to it but I didn't lose faith and I bought 'Loud And Clear'
I will not say that it's awful cause it's not...there are some amazing songs....like 'Loud And Clear' 'Dance All Night' 'She Never Looked That Good For Me' 'She's A Tease' and 'Just Got Back From HEaven' are all amazing songs...worthy of including in the debut...but the rest of the album feels a little off balance, the production is great, the performances are great too,it's just the majority of the songs are not quite as catchy as they could have been, and it's a shame, the classic 80s sound is here in full glory....if you love Def Leppard,or Night Ranger, or even Bon Jovi or Whitesnake, I truly think you would love this band
and if you are already a fan and wondering if you should buy this CD,I would definitely say YES
there are more then enough great songs to make it worth owning

the upside - She's A Tease is classic,so is 'She Never Looked That Good For Me' it has all you could ask for from a great 80s rock band, great vocals, great solos, great production and lots of hair!

the downside - a lot of the songs are not quite as catchy as their debut or the 'Missing Pieces' collection...some seem to drag a bit but luckily the great songs are spaced evenly throughout

the bottom line - a very worth addition to any true 80s rock fan...don't hesitate to buy this, especially at this price...bands just don't sound like this anymore so let's support the ones who still do and have that awesome 80s sound...donutman says so!!!

2 out of 5 stars Worst Little Tour of Whorehouse.......2006-06-06

Roxie Lucas saves this review from having a single star. Her performance was the shining star in a rather lifeless, dusty, and uninspired revival of the original production which thankfully avoided Broadway. Compare with the rollicking original recording and you will easily notice the lack of life, spirit and vibrancy in the new recording. The addition of A Friend to Me added nothing to the score but sluggish redundancy.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2005-10-24

I saw this production . . . it was a fantastic tour. I love this CD and highly reccomend it! This is by far the best recording of the show. If you are a fan of Ann Margret or of this musical I am sure you will love it. Now some people have complained about Ann Margret's voice not being what it was . . . I think it's better. Her voice is smokey, breathy and sexy . . . and perfect for this Las Vegas meets honky tonk score. She is the perfect Miss Mona aside from Dolly Parton. The supporting cast is very strong here as well. Flashy costumes and scantily clothed men and women . . . how can anyone not love this musical.

      4 out of 5 stars Ann-Margret in a lively performance.......2003-10-18

THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS is always a delight, and in this new cast album of the recent national touring production starring Ann-Margret, it's even better than ever.

Ann-Margret takes on the role of the Chicken Ranch owner Miss Mona with aplomb, offering up a lively performance. She sings lovely renditions of "Girl, You're a Woman", "A Lil' Ole Bitty Pissant Country Place", and a brand-new song written especially for this production, "A Friend to Me".

Gary Sandy does well by the character of Mona's old flame Ed Earl Dodd, with fine support from Rob Donohoe as Melvin P. Thorpe and Hal Davis as Edsel Mackay.

Avery Sommers adds a soulful voice to the character of the sassy bordello maid Jewel, and offers up a show-stopping "Twenty-Four Hours of Lovin'". Roxie Lucas plays the role of the thankless Doatsy Mae, and sings her self-titled number quite affectingly.

Terri Dixon and Jen Celene Little do well by the featured roles of Angel and Shy, with the Chicken Ranch girls offering up a superb rendition of the heartbreakingly-lovely "Hard Candy Christmas".

All-in-all, if you love this delightful musical, you'll adore this brand-new cast album!

4 out of 5 stars Star Power in the House - -The Whorehouse, that is........2002-03-06

Ann Margret`s singing voice is quite different from what you`d expect if you heard the previous cast album; however, she purrs her way through them while infusing a great deal of charm and personality to her renditions. Her numbers are not musically beautiful, yet they manage to be touching, sexy, rawnchy and pleasing. You can feel her elgant, strong, glamorous presence which, incidentally, are the character requirements for Miss Mona. The musical arrangements are superb, the energetic entr' acte is a welcome addition to the already familiar musical program. The ensemble is superband Watchdog, the Governor and Jewel all stand out in their solo numbers.

The sad note is, the "Doatsy Mae" number does no justice to the original. Although acceptably sung, it fails to covey the furstration, hope and dreams of the character. Overall, this CD is surely worth the price: with its good vocals, wonderful score and general sense of innocent mischief, you'll have a great time listening to this all-out for fun musical.

2 out of 5 stars Ann Margret Disappointing.......2002-02-25

After listening to this cast album I was horrified and disappointed at the way Ann Margret sounds. Her voice is not in good form and on more than one occasion she fails to stay on key. It is very sad to hear because she has always been one of my favorite performers. The show is coming to Portland in 2 weeks but I think I will bypass this particular production.
Bruce Kimmel always does excellent work. His CDs are flawless. However, everything seems horribly over miked, in particular Ann Margret. You can hear every breath she takes and it sounds like they were trying to compensate her voice. The orchestra sounds thin as though they are not using a lot of instruments. The chorus does not sound as rich and full as they do on the original Broadway cast CD. This might be due, in part, to the recording studio. It was recorded on their day off during a three week run in Dallas, Texas.
There are some excellent supporting performances (hence the two star rating)that are enjoyable. Roxie Lucas, as Doatsie Mae, has a nice solo as well as Avery Sommers singing "24 Hours of Lovin':.
Gary Sandy and Rob Donohue are also fine in less flashy roles.
Perhaps it is a production that is better seen than heard.
