This collection contains a variety of the band's works from the 80's. Like other self consciously tortured artists (i.e. Virgin Prunes) Clair Obscur is a hit or miss band. In their best moments, their dark, wry sense of style shadows contemporary music mocking all of the things you hold dear. At their worst they present an unlistenable mess, burdoned by their arrogant pretentiousness. This album showcases all of these elements. The first half of the album contains dark, post-punk dirges. The most notable song on this part of the album is "Froh" which sounds like it came straight off of a Bauhaus album. There is also an instrumental version of their utterly cold "hit" "Die Kinder Sind Allein". But mostly these are rough works that lead to the band's parody of modern life, shown on the second half of the album in fine form. Amongst these is the theatrical, bitter rant "Smurf in the Gulag" which is followed by the similarly brooding "Till the Morning Light". The album is closed out by one of their many versions of "Blume" featuring a tortured French Artiste singing to what sounds like a disco version of a Death In June song. Make of it what you will.

      This is the best of the many Big Country compilations released over the years, partly because of the tracklist, but also because of the sound quality.

      This compilation has three outstanding tracks from Big Country's dark, overlooked masterpiece, "Steeltown" -- Tall Ships Go, Girl With Grey Eyes, and the title track -- and they all sound terrific. You also get the single version of Just A Shadow, but the sound quality there is not so great. JAS actually sounds better on Through A Big Country, the greatest hits collection. And the b-side Belief In The Small Man is an astonishing, soaring epic that will make you wonder why it was ever relegated to b-side status.

      If you only know the song "In A Big Country" and you're looking for an introduction to the rest of the band's material, this is a great place to start. The first four tracks are all from the band's brilliant debut, "The Crossing", and you get four of the best tracks from the band's stellar third album, "The Seer". The sound of that album had a lighter, pop-leaning sound, but still with an ethereal Celtic flavor that should appeal to fans of Peter Gabriel, Enya, or Kate Bush, who actually sang backup on "The Seer".

      The last three tracks come from the band's fourth album, "Peace In Our Time", which was an overproduced attempt at radio-friendly pop, but this collection wisely chooses two of the best tracks from that album, "Thousand Yard Stare" and "The Travellers", an Irish-flavoured instrumental.

      Plus you get a terrific sounding version of "Wonderland", the UK hit from '84 that shows Big Country sounding a lot like early U2.

        Let me just start by saying that I love the entire collection. Celine had really nice songs during that decade, and I think she deserves more recognition for them. Perhaps those songs should be put with all the hits she had in the 90s (English and French) together to form a box set. If it does happen, let's hope the collection includes "Ce N'était Qu'un Rêve" and "Incognito". I ordered it used, however, and I'm afraid I made a big mistake in choosing to do so because one of the CDs is all scratch up causing me to have to skip three songs on it, so I am going to reorder the collection under another title: "French Collection". Since I love all the songs anyway, I will still give the compilation all the stars. For the amazon.com customer who purchased it and said that the album was bland, I guess he wasted his money. Maybe I should have bought it from him.

        Celine is a great vocalist, and this was evident already when she was a teenager. I grew up in Canada, and I remember her from the very beginning, and even then she was dazzling. But let's be realistic, these are 80s pop songs, sung by a teenager. While there is a lot of talent in the collection, the substance is not always there. As in all "the best of..." collections, many of these songs were never played on the radio and were just plugged in to fill the 2 disks. In addition, all of the mega-hits from the "Incognito" album are mysteriously not included in this collection. If it was just for that, I would give it only 3 stars. However, since her songs bring back so many memories for me, since they accompanied me all through my teenage years, I have to give it an extra star, just for the emotions they bring up. Whenever I hear her sing to her mother in "Tellement j'ai d'amour, pour toi", I cannot help but shed a tear...

        This is one of the best collection of her early French songs that you will find. I've always thought that Celine sings best in her native French language. Of course it's hard to say that she doesn't sing as well in English, because she's also one of the best singers we've ever had in the English speaking world as well, but there's something about when she sings in French that's just different. Her emotions, voice, and spirit while singing in the French language are stronger. Although you could say her talent did mature in years after the songs on this album were recorded, (I highly recommend her "D'eux"/ "The French Album," "Dion chante Plamondon" and "S'il suffisait d'aimer" albums) her voice is still as beautiful as ever in this collection. The songs are wonderful as well, each with its own personality. You should easily be able to enjoy them even if you don't understand French. Many compilations of her earlier songs only contain half- even a quarter- of the material on this CD set, a good reason to choose this collection over others. I should also mention the fact that this CD includes the prestigious Eurovision award winning song, Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi. It is one of her best early songs.

        It amazes me that people have rated this CD so highly. It is bland, bland, bland. Celine may have a "smooth" voice, but the songs are so vacuous, they cloy.

        Although I'm a dedicated french music lover I discovered this double CD collection by chance. I enjoyed every minute of it and I simply can't take it out of my CD player! Yes, the songs are just nice pop tunes, but Celine's voice (she was only a teenager at the time) is great. She has one of the best voices ever. To all the 80's nostalgics and Celine's fans: buy this album.
